Treasure Hu Captain Burnham and the Discovery crew go after an 800 year old Romulan ship starting a treasure hunt across the galaxy. Thrilling 5th and final season that unexpectedly picks up a forgotten storyline from a classic Next Generation episode The Chase as well as bringing back and fleshing out Deep Space Nine villains The Breen for the 32nd century. A tense and gripping set of 10 episodes building to a feature length finale full of surprises giving the Discovery crew a good send off though we could still see them in future shows set in the 32nd century with excellent performances from the regular cast.
Good ending Just a shame it’s ending after a great series . Great special effects and the stories were very entertaining . I wonder if there will be another series along the Star Trek family .
Last Hurrah for Discovery This is a bit of a greatest hits of Discovery. If you didn’t like it up to now or found it too “woke”, this ain’t going to change your mind. It is a lot of fun though. My wife described it as being a bit like Indiana Jones or National Treasure in Space.
My three positives were a) it is an awful lot of fun, b) We get to see sides of Burnham that we haven’t seen before and c) We get a new first officer who brings a fresh energy to things.
My three main criticisms were a) Not enough Tig Notaro as Commander Reno, b) some odd editing choices which killed the excitement in an otherwise brilliantly executed space battle in the final episode and c) a denouement to the show which seems to take longer than the end of The Return of the King…
I’m sorry to see Discovery finish up. I have always liked it. I am hoping that there may be some more Discovery novels in our future to continue the story.
Quality item and a great end to the series. A very nice steel book housed all the blu ray discs very safely and securely. The product itself is just fine.
As for the show, you either liked Discovery or you didn’t. Well…I did….apart for the awful season where Saru’s brother was responsible for ” the burn”. That season was embarrassing. ( Season 3 or 4 ? I’m not sure without looking it up) But the other four seasons, including this one ,were just great Trek.
Great end to a turbulent series This series has had more twists and turns than an intrepid class starship in a borg transwarp conduit.
Started badly. Nearly got canned, and somehow managed to salvage a second, third and fourth season. Kirk would be proud. This final season is good. I won’t say great. Condensing season six into season five doesn’t quite work.
The best season of a great show Season one was beset with production problems yet remained remarkably consistent in spite of that. Season two improved things considerably and season three proved the show could work with a new format. Season four delivered a solid season of ‘Trek-like’ storytelling and season five has topped them all.
Possibly because of the reduced episode count, the overall story arc seems far tighter with less of the (slight) padding in evidence last season. Tying the show back to season six of TNG was an interesting move and I think it paid off in a satisfying way. The reintroduction of the Breen, and giving them far more nuance, was also a welcome step.
The ending, finally linking into the Short Trek “Calypso” was a surprising move. Apparently this storyline had been reserved for season six had the show continued, but it was not to be. My only real complaint with this ending was that the edit from the original final scene to the new ‘coda’ was a little clumsy, but apart from that I loved the season and found the ending very moving.
I would like to close with the fact that I have been watching Trek for fifty years, so some of the accusations thrown at the show that it doesn’t appeal to ‘old’ fans is a nonsense. I didn’t find it “woke” (whatever that means on any given day) either, as every show has been as liberal as the era in which it was made would allow. Burnham isn’t a great captain because she’s a black woman, she’s just a black woman who’s a great captain. Same with Stamets: His sexuality has nothing to do with his intelligence… it literally isn’t an issue. Remember how even a black woman on the bridge was contentious to many during TOS? Now it isn’t a problem. Hopefully, as Trek has always been ahead of the curve, the same will apply to Discovery one day and we’ll just shrug and accept these people for who they are as opposed to what they are.
