This movie is painful emotionally to watch for each of the characters and their issues and how they unfold, but the cinematography is phenomenal which Jane Campion is fantastic at capturing in all of her films. She’s amazing and the awards it received were justified. A dark tale with a happy ending A brilliant gothic plot with incredibly good actors ( As always Mr. Cumberbatch shines over the whole thing) set in a dark isolated house -a ranch actually-in the countryside in 1925. And such an unexpected twist in the tale at the end : absolutely delightful.
Stark I guess my depth is questionable, as having watched the film I feel I have missed something big. Someone else mentioned Brokeback Mountain.. Awesome scenery anyway, and a sense of just what ‘the west’ was like 100yrs ago. Benedict Cumberbach is impressive. If you like such as Lost in Translation, this will grab you. Jane Campion is quite a woman. See The Piano too.
I thought this was an exceptionally well done movie (plot, directing, acting, photography), but I assume I'm in the minority when grading the movie. Here's why: 1) It's very methodical all the way through., 2) There's a gay element to it, 3) I would not classify the movie as "a western" per se, and 4) The theme of the dialogue was " the less spoken, the better". None of that bothered me in the slightest, but could bug you if you're what I call "an average movie fan". Benedict Cumberbatch should have walked away with Best Actor at the Oscars. Instead it was given to a deranged bully for a laughable performance. Also should have won for Best Picture, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, and either one of the Supporting Actor nominees from this film were worthy. Jane Campion is a genius. I had read the book of The Power of the Dog and was fascinated by the story which was written in 1925 where discretion was mandatory and yet the author managed in subtle ways to tell the story. When the Criterion Collection DVD became available through Amazon, I purchased the DVD. The film is excellent and captures the essence of the old West USA perfectly and all its characters. The acting is faultless, the background scenery lovely and the film remains faithful to the book but with a little more in the way of character explanation. It is not dissimilar to the works of Annie Proulx and especially Brokeback Mountain.
