Elaborate Kung Fu Fantasy Another excellent release from 88 Films. This is regarded as a pretty rare film in Fu collecting circles so it’s nice to have a lovely new print finally in our hands. Featuring a large cast of Shaws stars including a strong supporting role from Yuen Wah (even though his bald wig is a little distracting) with great martial arts throughout. The plot can be a little over complicated at times and would certainly suit a a more pure Wu Xia movie as this is a mix of a Venoms type of action with Wu Xia elements. The blu ray has sparse features on it with no audio commentaries or interviews but has a stills gallery. One thing that does irk me slightly is someone at 88 Films doing the subtitles is “avin’ a bit of a larf” in that they are putting in Eastenders type dialogue. People calling other characters “mate” and “he’s scarpered!” And “doesn’t know his a*** from his elbow!”.who’s responsible for signing off on this nonsense needs to find a job elsewhere more suited to his needs like the writers room for Eastenders as mentioned. I’ve seen it on a few releases now. I know the dubbing from the 70’s and 80’s featured silly accents and the like now and again but seeing it in 2024 subs is idiotic. Stop now.
Other than that a lovely disc worth adding to your collection.
If ever a Shaw Brothers film needed a remaste ‘To Kill a Mastermind’ was, for many years, a legend for Shaw Brothers fans. While so many other films got DVD releases in the early 2000s, To Kill a Mastermind never appeared, allegedly as every print had been destroyed. Then, poor quality copies began to be circulated and everyone could see that this was something a bit special. To see that this is getting the glorious 88films treatment is incredible news, therefore – a genuine forgotten gem that is packed with high quality action. Slightly akin to a Venoms film but mixed with a Chu Yuan mystery, ‘To Kill a Mastermind’ is an essential purchase for fans – it’s release cannot come fast enough.
