The Alxum External CD Drive arrived as described and looks just like the photos advertised.

The quality of this drive is fantastic, it was easy to set up and just get going with it. I got this to recover some old CDs and camera recordings I had. It was great to revive them.

This worked like a ‘plug and play’ which is fantastic and very convenient. It makes little to no noise when it’s on. Great value!

This DVD player for laptops is a handy tool for media enthusiasts. The USB 3.0 and Type-C connections offer versatility, and it performs well for both reading and burning discs. The added SD/TF slot is a useful feature for additional functionality. While the drive is not the most compact, it’s effective for its intended purpose. It’s a reliable choice for those who need an external DVD player for various media needs and offers decent performance for everyday use.

Many laptops are so small these days that they just can’t fit in what was standard 10 years ago. This is where such devices come in really handy if you need such functionality. I had a friend who wanted to back-up his wedding video and this device made it possible by ripping the first disc and then writing back to a DVD+R. t plugs in via USB-C and is surprisingly quiet when in use. It remains cool and worked seamlessly. If you need it, I’d recommend this.

I have a huge DVD collection that was gathering dust because I no longer have a DVD player. I decided to give this device a try on my Mac, and it has exceeded my expectations.

The setup is straightforward; it’s almost plug-and-play. Although it takes a bit of time to load, this is similar to the experience with a standard DVD player. One feature I appreciate is the option to pick your region, though it’s worth noting that you can only change it five times. This is a bit limiting since I own both Region 2 and a few Region 1 DVDs. However, this limitation is common with many DVD players, and some don’t offer the option to change regions at all, so having this flexibility is a plus.

I’ve used it a few times to watch my DVDs, and so far, it has performed well. I haven’t tried using it as a DVD burner, as I don’t currently need that function and don’t have any blank DVDs. But for my purposes, it works perfectly and does exactly what it promises.

Unlike most people these days I still use CD’s and DVD’s. As DVD drives become less common it is handy having a portable drive that can be moved between computers.
This Device has a cable with dual connectors for USB A/(3) AND USB C. Connection is just a case of plugging it in and it was automatically recognised both on a desktop PC running Windows 10 and an old iMac laptop.
Read speeds are decent for a device of this type. If you are after blistering fast data transfer you probably aren’t going to use DVD’s for reading legacy disks this is perfectly adequate. Writing also works well. I have only tested this on a couple of DVD’s but it worked without any problems. I have also burnt a couple of audio CD’s for the car without any issues and they play without problems.
In operation it is quite quiet. There are a few clicks and whirrs but nothing distraction. The built in hub and card reader is a nice addition and allows you to use this instead of any existing hubs or card readers which may clear a bit more desk space.
There are cheaper external DVD’s available but this is a nice example and with all the extra features and excellent performance it is well worth the money.

I needed a drive to use with my Amiga X5000 machine. This drive works beautifully because it can be optionally powered by an additional USB port. Note, I used a power bank battery as I believe that if you power it from a different device to the data connection then bad things could happen as you will be bridging the power of two devices. I’m no expert though, just bear that in mind.

Power aside it’s nice that it has the built in hub and USB card reader. I popped a Micro SD card in there and it worked a treat.

My only real gripe with the drive, and it’s enough for me to have dropped it a star is that the data cable is way too short for anything except the closest of laptops. I have to sit it on top of the PC tower case which has two USB ports on the top / front and even then I have to turn it so the back of the drive faces the front of the case, otherwise the cable doesn’t reach. That makes putting discs in and out a bit of a pain. Fortunately I really don’t use optical drives much these days.

I’m not able to vouch for the writing capabilities as I don’t have any writable media. I just needed a drive for reading audio CDs and the odd game from CD / DVD (yep, they do still arrive that way, especially in Amiga land).

I recently got this 8-in-1 USB DVD drive, which is a bit differnt to what I’ve seen before. Not only does it play CDs and DVDs, but it also has SD & TF card slots, a USB 3.0 port, and three USB 2.0 ports. This means I can transfer photos and videos, connect various devices, and even charge my phone all at once. I didn’t really know you could get all this with a CD drive before. It works perfectly with my laptop. The USB 3.0 provides fast data transfer, and the drive reads DVDs and CDs quickly too. It’s plug-and-play, so no hassle with extra drivers, and its slim design makes it portable if needed. The package came with everything I needed, including a power cable.

I ordered this as I do have the need for a CD/DVD drive on my laptop, but as with most laptops these days there is none as standard.
I juts plugged it into the USB-C port on my laptop and the drive appeared in This PC and functioned as you would expect.
It also seamlessly wrote to a DVD-R blank disc that I tested it with and backed up plenty of documents and photos with no issues whatsoever.
Playing a DVD movie was also seamless and what struck me was how quiet the drive was in operation. I always remembered that my drives would be fairly noisy, but this is really not at all.
You can easily watch a movie on your laptop with this and not be bothered by the drive spinning and seeking.

If you are looking for a quick and easy solution to adding a drive to your laptop then this is ideal.

I still use optical disks a lot – I have loads of old work stored on DVDs and even CDs – and my current lap top doesn’t have any find of drive.

This device has been able to read everything I have thrown at it – even some 20+ year old CDRs. It had trouble reading an old CDRW (read it, but very very slowly – 20 minutes to read a 15Mb image file) but my old iMac with built-in drive couldn’t read it at all, so I suspect the disk has degraded over the 25 years since I made it.

In fact the more I use this drive and explore some old data CDs and DVDs I have made over the last 25+ years the more I appreciate it – it definitely reads disks that other drives simply will not.

Writing optical disks works well – not super fast but fine for a USB3.0 device. Watching movies on DVD works very well.

Cable management is good – the cable folds neatly into a custom moulded slot in the bottom of the unit. The addition of the card reader and USB sockets on the back of the unit makes this an almost invaluable device for me – everything on on one device, easy and quick.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great little device

The idea of combining an external DVD drive and a multi-hub into a single unit is genius, and I’m pleased to report that the Alxum drive does a pretty decent job at providing that convenience in one small package. The 8 in 1 device hosts an 8x speed DVD burner, 1x USB 3.0, 3x USB 2.0, full size SD card reader, Micro SD card reader and a single USB C port. There is also a small slide switch on the side of the drive but the included documentation does not describe what that does. Additionally there is no Hard Drive inside the device, despite the label on the underside suggesting there may well be.

In fact the included documentation is quite interesting. It quotes the operating systems that are supported by the drive, with the latest windows version mentioned being Windows 8. This would suggest these drives have been around for 10 years having probably been designed in 2014/2015. Take that as you will, but at the very least the documentation hasn’t been updated in the last decade so perhaps the same is true with the technology inside the device.

From a convenience perspective however its a winner, and it performs perfectly well for a device that is likely only to get used every once in a while. The price at the time of writing this review is 34.99 with a 20% discount that can be applied at checkout. So at just smidge under 28 it’s a pretty decent option to pop in your laptop bag for those times when you need an optical drive handy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very handy external DVD drive...
