Great for recovering memories
The Alxum External CD Drive arrived as described and looks just like the photos advertised.
The quality of this drive is fantastic, it was easy to set up and just get going with it. I got this to recover some old CDs and camera recordings I had. It was great to revive them.
This worked like a ‘plug and play’ which is fantastic and very convenient. It makes little to no noise when it’s on. Great value!
Functional DVD Playe
This DVD player for laptops is a handy tool for media enthusiasts. The USB 3.0 and Type-C connections offer versatility, and it performs well for both reading and burning discs. The added SD/TF slot is a useful feature for additional functionality. While the drive is not the most compact, it’s effective for its intended purpose. It’s a reliable choice for those who need an external DVD player for various media needs and offers decent performance for everyday use.
Really handy if your PC/laptop doesn't have a DVD drive
Many laptops are so small these days that they just can’t fit in what was standard 10 years ago. This is where such devices come in really handy if you need such functionality. I had a friend who wanted to back-up his wedding video and this device made it possible by ripping the first disc and then writing back to a DVD+R. t plugs in via USB-C and is surprisingly quiet when in use. It remains cool and worked seamlessly. If you need it, I’d recommend this.
Works well but got an issue 😕
Nice slim rom drive thats easy to use. Works well and has some extra hub features.
However even when there is no discount in the drive I’ve noticed every now and then it’s as if it’s trying to read a disc and going off the amount of disc drives I’ve had over the years I’m pretty sure this is not meant to happen while slightly annoying it doesn’t prevent the device working as it should and I’ve not had any other issues.
I also would have preferred the cable to to come from the back instead of the side as where I wanted to put it the cable is in the way and so I have had to place somewhere else
With these minor issues in mind and a price tag of currently 29.99 I’d say this is the top end of what I’d be expecting to pay and may even be a little more expensive than I would like to be honest.
Great external cd drive
I got this as I have thousands of pictures saved on cd from around 20 years ago.
This worked great, plug n play, at transfering my pictures to a windows 11 laptop.
Transfer speed was what I expected, not super fast but not super slow.
Viewing pictures direct from the drive is slow and transfering them is much faster.
The drive is a little noisy, I think my video makes it sound louder than it really is.
I haven’t the need to burn anything to cd, so I haven’t tried.
The drive is lightweight, simple to use and good value.
Not bad, and can finally rewatch my old DVD collectio
I have a huge DVD collection that was gathering dust because I no longer have a DVD player. I decided to give this device a try on my Mac, and it has exceeded my expectations.
The setup is straightforward; it’s almost plug-and-play. Although it takes a bit of time to load, this is similar to the experience with a standard DVD player. One feature I appreciate is the option to pick your region, though it’s worth noting that you can only change it five times. This is a bit limiting since I own both Region 2 and a few Region 1 DVDs. However, this limitation is common with many DVD players, and some don’t offer the option to change regions at all, so having this flexibility is a plus.
I’ve used it a few times to watch my DVDs, and so far, it has performed well. I haven’t tried using it as a DVD burner, as I don’t currently need that function and don’t have any blank DVDs. But for my purposes, it works perfectly and does exactly what it promises.
Works well and useful to have
Unlike most people these days I still use CD’s and DVD’s. As DVD drives become less common it is handy having a portable drive that can be moved between computers.
This Device has a cable with dual connectors for USB A/(3) AND USB C. Connection is just a case of plugging it in and it was automatically recognised both on a desktop PC running Windows 10 and an old iMac laptop.
Read speeds are decent for a device of this type. If you are after blistering fast data transfer you probably aren’t going to use DVD’s for reading legacy disks this is perfectly adequate. Writing also works well. I have only tested this on a couple of DVD’s but it worked without any problems. I have also burnt a couple of audio CD’s for the car without any issues and they play without problems.
In operation it is quite quiet. There are a few clicks and whirrs but nothing distraction. The built in hub and card reader is a nice addition and allows you to use this instead of any existing hubs or card readers which may clear a bit more desk space.
There are cheaper external DVD’s available but this is a nice example and with all the extra features and excellent performance it is well worth the money.
Nice portable optical drive but the cable is way too short to be practical.
I needed a drive to use with my Amiga X5000 machine. This drive works beautifully because it can be optionally powered by an additional USB port. Note, I used a power bank battery as I believe that if you power it from a different device to the data connection then bad things could happen as you will be bridging the power of two devices. I’m no expert though, just bear that in mind.
Power aside it’s nice that it has the built in hub and USB card reader. I popped a Micro SD card in there and it worked a treat.
My only real gripe with the drive, and it’s enough for me to have dropped it a star is that the data cable is way too short for anything except the closest of laptops. I have to sit it on top of the PC tower case which has two USB ports on the top / front and even then I have to turn it so the back of the drive faces the front of the case, otherwise the cable doesn’t reach. That makes putting discs in and out a bit of a pain. Fortunately I really don’t use optical drives much these days.
I’m not able to vouch for the writing capabilities as I don’t have any writable media. I just needed a drive for reading audio CDs and the odd game from CD / DVD (yep, they do still arrive that way, especially in Amiga land).
Good external CD drive
I recently got this 8-in-1 USB DVD drive, which is a bit differnt to what I’ve seen before. Not only does it play CDs and DVDs, but it also has SD & TF card slots, a USB 3.0 port, and three USB 2.0 ports. This means I can transfer photos and videos, connect various devices, and even charge my phone all at once. I didn’t really know you could get all this with a CD drive before. It works perfectly with my laptop. The USB 3.0 provides fast data transfer, and the drive reads DVDs and CDs quickly too. It’s plug-and-play, so no hassle with extra drivers, and its slim design makes it portable if needed. The package came with everything I needed, including a power cable.
Worked perfectly and instantly
I ordered this as I do have the need for a CD/DVD drive on my laptop, but as with most laptops these days there is none as standard.
I juts plugged it into the USB-C port on my laptop and the drive appeared in This PC and functioned as you would expect.
It also seamlessly wrote to a DVD-R blank disc that I tested it with and backed up plenty of documents and photos with no issues whatsoever.
Playing a DVD movie was also seamless and what struck me was how quiet the drive was in operation. I always remembered that my drives would be fairly noisy, but this is really not at all.
You can easily watch a movie on your laptop with this and not be bothered by the drive spinning and seeking.
If you are looking for a quick and easy solution to adding a drive to your laptop then this is ideal.
Works as intended, could have come with a longer attached USB Data Cable...
I saw this product and thought I would review and use this to backup all my media that I own and also play Audio and watch DVD’s on my PC.
Product also comes with a DVD/CD RW Slim Laptop Optical Burner Drive and a TF, SD card slots and 3 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 Ports, plus a 5V USB-C Port for extra power.
Not really much to say apart from it all works as soon as I connect the attached USB cable to the PC and the USB-C power cable to a USB power brick.
TBH I would of preferred for it to come with a longer attached USB cable, it comes with a USB-C Power cable so a longer data cable would of been nice.
Overall I am happy with this product and I give it an overall 4 stars due to the attached USB Data cable being really short.
A great little device
I still use optical disks a lot – I have loads of old work stored on DVDs and even CDs – and my current lap top doesn’t have any find of drive.
This device has been able to read everything I have thrown at it – even some 20+ year old CDRs. It had trouble reading an old CDRW (read it, but very very slowly – 20 minutes to read a 15Mb image file) but my old iMac with built-in drive couldn’t read it at all, so I suspect the disk has degraded over the 25 years since I made it.
In fact the more I use this drive and explore some old data CDs and DVDs I have made over the last 25+ years the more I appreciate it – it definitely reads disks that other drives simply will not.
Writing optical disks works well – not super fast but fine for a USB3.0 device. Watching movies on DVD works very well.
Cable management is good – the cable folds neatly into a custom moulded slot in the bottom of the unit. The addition of the card reader and USB sockets on the back of the unit makes this an almost invaluable device for me – everything on on one device, easy and quick.
Multi-function marvel
Small form factor which packs in a CD/DVD rewriter, USB hub and SD/SDXC card reader. USBhub is 1 x USB3.0 and 3 x USB2. This read all the disks I tried (about a dozen) and wrote both disks (1xCD and 1x DVD) which I tried without any errors.
Ran fine from a USB 3.0 port on my desktop windows computer, so no external power supply was needed.
A marvellous little product which I highly recommend.
All good
As an external CD/DVD read/write (burner) I cannot fault this. It does exactly what it states effectively and efficiently. It is compact, nice looking, and seems to be well built. Having a the pre-attached USB-C/A connectors that conveniently store underneath it useful (no need to go on a cable hunt). Connected to both Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. No issues.
The addition of USB ‘hub features’ is a nice touch. To be super critical I would prefer more USB 3 ports and less USB 2 ports. But at the price point of having a CD/DVD reader/writer connecting via USB 3 with additional ports nothing to complain about.
A very handy external DVD drive...
The idea of combining an external DVD drive and a multi-hub into a single unit is genius, and I’m pleased to report that the Alxum drive does a pretty decent job at providing that convenience in one small package. The 8 in 1 device hosts an 8x speed DVD burner, 1x USB 3.0, 3x USB 2.0, full size SD card reader, Micro SD card reader and a single USB C port. There is also a small slide switch on the side of the drive but the included documentation does not describe what that does. Additionally there is no Hard Drive inside the device, despite the label on the underside suggesting there may well be.
In fact the included documentation is quite interesting. It quotes the operating systems that are supported by the drive, with the latest windows version mentioned being Windows 8. This would suggest these drives have been around for 10 years having probably been designed in 2014/2015. Take that as you will, but at the very least the documentation hasn’t been updated in the last decade so perhaps the same is true with the technology inside the device.
From a convenience perspective however its a winner, and it performs perfectly well for a device that is likely only to get used every once in a while. The price at the time of writing this review is 34.99 with a 20% discount that can be applied at checkout. So at just smidge under 28 it’s a pretty decent option to pop in your laptop bag for those times when you need an optical drive handy.
Works perfectly
This is a neat unit which has an organised space to store the lead which has both USB and USB C ends. The lead is perhaps a bit on the short side.
I had no problem burning a DVD and the disc was happily read by another drive so it works perfectly.
A plus point for using it on the move with a laptop is that it also works as a USB hub and has a card reader so you can travel light.
The included card adaptor is a nice touch.
A Good Optio
I received this for free for review as part of Amazon Vine.
Everything works as advertised. Standard drivers are used and its all plug and play. The addition of USB-C and an extra power-cable if your PC isn’t delivering enough current, are a nice touches too.
Audio CDs read fine, as do movies; it didn’t like a Region 1 US movie though, so I assume its region-locked. In general though, I haven’t found any problems using this product.
Compact and attractive looking external drive, both read and write
Alxum External CD Drive
As most computers and laptops no longer provide a CD/DVD player, you will often need to purchase an external drive like this if you wish to read or write to CD or DVD. Here you are supplied with an external drive, along with a USB cable and user guide.
I was pleased by the build quality of this when I removed it from the box. The drive is quite slender and will only take up a small amount of worktop. It’s also a handy size where it can easily be stored in a laptop bag. The drive is made from plastic, but has a stylish looking textured case that suggests this cost more than it actually does.
A USB cable is built into the underside, just unfold from the mount. This can be plugged into either a USB Type-A or Type-C port, as 2 connectors are available on the same cable. This cable serves to power the drive, also for data transfer where it will work perfectly well. But if you want to be sure there is enough power, a separate USB power cable is also included which can be plugged into a normal USB power socket, or perhaps power bank.
Along the rear of the drive are 3 x USB 2.0 ports, 1 x USB 3.0 port, along with an SD port, and micro-SD port. All of these can be accessed through the drive, although they become unavailable if a CD or DVD is in use. So in effect this can double up as a USB hub when the drive is not in use.
As well as being a CD/DVD drive, this will also burn the same. This supports CD -R/RW, -Rom. DVD +R/RW, DVD -R/RW, DVD Rom. Reading and writing speeds are: CD x 24, DVD x 8. In use this is very quiet indeed, I couldn’t even tell that the drive was powered up. I just plugged it into my Windows 10 computer and it was recognised and working within seconds.
Overall a decent quality affordable drive that would be a useful addition to any computer.

Thank you for reading my review, I hope you have found it helpful.
Must have for field based engineers working with legacy systems, or the family IT support!
As a former field based IT technician, and the family IT support guy, this is a really convenient tool to have.
I have to support a wide array of super old desktops and laptops (from Windows XP up to 10, and some old versions of OSX and MacOS), and when I visit “the family”, they will flock to me with all sorts of issues. Super annoying, but the mrs will just give me the frown if I refuse so I just do it. lol.
Instead of having to carry around a USB hub and a DVD drive, this looks to be my go to if I have to step foot out of the door.
It has a built in USB cable with both a Type-C and Type-A connector which neatly tucks underneath the drive when not in use. The cable isn’t that long, around 20cm so you may find yourself balancing it carefully one systems where rear USB access is the only option with limited space.
It seems to handle having all ports occupied very well when connected to a machine with USB-C, and I can even charge a device (albeit on normal/slow speeds) from the USB-C port on the rear.
Super handy tool, happy I can now reduce the amount of things I need to carry around.
