Great 6 port fast charger unit!
I bought this to replace an older 5 USB-A port dock which had only 2 IQ chargers, meaning it wasn’t very fast at charging… anything.
This comes with 4 USB-C and 2 USB-A, and while the 2 USB-A are nice for legacy devices, I’d rather there be a 6 USB-C version available, having said that, this is a great unit. It’s heavier than the unit I’m replacing, but, it charges things very fast and feels extremely solid!
I use it at home to charge my devices, and is now my holiday go-to to charge all my devices such as phone, watch, power banks etc. It’s also powerful enough to run my MacBook pro!
The first thing you notice about this charger before you even open the box is the weight – it is heavy.
Opening the box you see a well built 6 port USB charger.
This charger is a GaN (Gallium Nitride) charger – using Gallium Nitride allows components to be smaller and have better heat properties.
It has 4 USBC ports and 2 USBA ports capable of outputting up to a total of 200w of charging power. Each USBC port is capable of 100w output and the USBA ports are capable of a maximum 22.5w each.
None of my devices pull anything close to 100w but I can have my tablets, laptop, monitor and a couple of smaller rechargable devices all charging or powered at the same time.
There is no noise from the charger so I assume there are decent sized heatsinks inside but evene with all ports in use the unit does not get hot.
It does not look out of place on my desk with it’s modern clean styling. It also has 4 small rubber feet to stop it sliding around and a generous 5 foot power lead with a figure of eight connection.
It has all the expected safety protocols to prevemt overloading, overheating etc. and comes with a 2 year warranty backed by a company that is not going to disappear.
Whilst it is not going to make my travel bag it has a permanent home on my desktop and so far I have found nothing it can not charge at it’s maximum rate – highly recommended.
Good, but now power indicator or switch
The transfer is really solid, weighing 565g on its own, without the power lead. The weight means that its unlikely to move on your desk, but due to the weight, I wouldn’t recommend you carry it on your travels. As expected from an Anker product, quality and performance are great. However, there is no reassuring led on the unit to confirm its on, so you have to look for the charging status on your device. The mixture of 4 USB-C and 2 USB-A sockets is good and with this amount of power shared amongst the sockets there should be no shortage of power for your laptop and associated devices.
Extremely well put together and works well
Anker have a reputation for making good electrical items, and it is easy to see why with this example. The desktop charging station manages to be both smaller and heavier than expected, having a very robust feel to it – with no cheap flimsy feel to it at all – you can tell this is well assembled and built to last.
It sits unobtrusively on the desk thanks to its small size. That weight i mentioned it probably a heatsink because even after being powered on with devices running from it for 10+ hours the casing is no hotter than room temperature.
On the front there are 2 usb-A sockets and 4 usb-C sockets. A good quantity and the 200W input means there is plenty of power to share around – their website gives full details as to what the limits are but suffice to say i powered and charged several devices at the same time with no issues.
Definitely not cheap, and i’m not sure the premium price is entirely justified despite the brands good reputation, however I would expect this to last a very long time, so maybe an occasion where you get what you pay for? Time will tell.
Excellent quality multi device charge
I currently have a 6 port UsB a charging hub but was getting frustrated with its limited charging speeds and functionality. Combined with all my sockets being occupied by the hub and laptop charger. I come across the Anker 200w prime charger which met all my requirements and more.
The prime charger has 6 outlets with 4 USB C and 2 USB A ports which can support simultaneous charging of devices. The device arrives well packaged and presented and opening the box contains the charging hub and power cable.
Its straight forward to set up and works out the box, you just need to make sure you have good quality cables for your higher output charging devices. The charging hub well made and feels like a quality item, even better is that it’s quite compact. One observation is that it’s quite weighty, which can make it a little more challenging to travel with.
This aside the device works brilliantly, it can charge multiple high output devices simultaneously. I was able to charge 2 x 65w laptop devices and a 20w iPad charging output with ease. The device maintained its temperature and consistently charged my devices very well.
The added bonus is it helps consolidate your multiple charging cables into one device which then gives you tons of flexibility. Overall it’s a high quality piece of kit and a must have item for high traffic areas or even for whilst travelling. It’s priced reasonably well given its performance and capabilities.
Everything about this charger says top quality. As soon as it arrived I was amazed by the weight of the box. The box itself was very solidly made and almost indestructible.
The charger is relatively compact despite its weight. I am assuming there must be some very heavy duty heatsinks inside. The outer casing looks like aluminium but sounds like plastic when tapped. The front face is glossy black. There are four small rubber feet on the bottom to prevent it slipping when on the desk. The mains lead is separate and plugs into the back of the unit via a 2 pin plug. This plug and socket feels secure. The lead has a velcro tape for tying it up when transporting, but to be honest, this is really a desktop charger given its weight.
The other thing that gives away the quality of this product is the level of detail provided on the output of each of the sockets when used in various combinations (see documentation on Anker website). Many competitive products just give a single output figure and are very vague on the maximum output of each socket when multiple sockets are in use.
I don’t have any devices that draw close to 100W to be able to test this charger to its max, but given the level of detail supplied by the manufacturer, I would be very surprised if it didn’t do exactly as claimed. In my application, with several devices plugged in and charging at once, it worked perfectly and didn’t even get noticeably warm. I feel confident it could cope with anything I can throw at it for some years to come.
Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Highly recommended.
