Does the 3 pin ev charger cable need to be installed?

No, as long as a UK standard socket is available, no installation is required to use the EV charging cable. Whether at home or on the road.

In which order should the cable be connected?

Step 1: Insert the 3 pin plug into the socket.

Step 2: Set the current and delay time.

Step 3: Insert the Type 2 plug into the vehicle’s charging socket.

How long does it take to charge an e-car?

It depends on the type of charger, the battery capacity and the state of charge of the battery. In general, mode 1 chargers need about 12 hours for a full charge, while mode 2 chargers need about 4-8 hours.

What guaran-tees can I get?

We offer a 2-year guaran-tees(for quality issues only. Excludes surface marks due to use, normal ageing due to normal use and damage to electronic components due to improper use).

    Works as it should.
I needed this I have caravan so needed it to low amps.
Set it at 8A and it put about 37% in over night.
No problems not tried any higher but works fine for me.

    Very good
This charger is well made and of good quality. I have now installed a 32A supply and can charge at above 7kw but due to the supply in my house I have set the current at 24A which gives me 5.2kw so I’m not so concerned when the water heater comes on and my heat pump is running (no gas) would thoroughly recommend this.

Great product but there is a watch out !
The charger is well built and does the job well.
The cable is good quality and the box of tricks is easy to understand to change the Amperage from 6 , 8 , 10 or 13 Amps .
The watch out is most UK sockets although suggesting they are rated to 13a are not and can only maintain a maximum CONSTANT load of 10A .
I discovered this after melting the switch on mine after setting the charge to 13a !
I have now set it to 8A as it feels like that is in the plugs comfort zone .
I understand that MK rate some of their wall sockets higher and will change to one of those later on but for the time being 8A is fine just takes longer to charge the car and I am in no rush as it happens overnight. If I need a boost I will take it to a public 7kw charger anyway .

    Smart charging at its bes
Just bought this to replace my previous charger and this one hands down beats my old charger 10x over. For a start you are able change the charging capacity to suit your needs, giving you faster or slower charging. The build quality is good too, with a nice cable tidy and easy to install charging plug. Best purchase in a long time.

    Quality charge
Very well made, and seems to work ok. Good quality connectors and cable. User can select current, so ideal for a domestic plug in charger. Only issue is that the car sometimes only half charges and not sure if this is the chargers fault.

    Great EV charger cable
This is a great EV charger cable, really well made and robust. Great to keep in the car to help with my range anxiety. As it’s only a 3pin plug it is slow to charge but does a great job charging overnight.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersExcellent Buy
We are new to EV charging. So bought this until we can have a dedicated wall charger fitted.
This has been so good, we are thinking of just sticking with this.
It seems to be supplying the charge at the maximum 12/13 amp rate. Therefore charging times are quicker than we expected.
We only do about 50-100 miles a day, so it is only taking a few hours to add this back.
The display is clear and easy to understand, and it seems very well made and sturdy.
    Seems worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA must-have for every EV drive
The unit is nicely made, feels good quality. It’s reassuringly heavy and the cables feel good. I didn’t have any issues charging my Kia EV6 at the expected speed. It has some nice smart features like current limit (although I’m not sure why you’d drop an already low charging speed) and charge delay, which is good for those on a time related electricity tariff.

Whilst I would never recommend a ‘granny charger’ like this for daily charging, it is a must-have to keep in the boot (or frunk) for those times when you’re parked overnight but only have access to a 3-pin plug. It comes in a nice carry case to keep everything together.

Overall I’d be happy to recommend this charger.

    convenient charging
I use the EV charger to charge my car anywhere I go – be it at home, or while I’m traveling. All I need is 3-pin UK plug within a proximity of 5-6m to my car. I’m not afraid to use the charger outdoors because it is highly resistant not only to water but any dirt and dust.
I really like the flexibility that this charger offers, I can either adjust the current or simply select the timer to specify how exactly I want to charge the batteries. Time delay feature also is very convenient, it offers up to 12 hours time delay, which enables me to schedule when exactly I want the charging to start.
No matter where my car goes this charger is its faithful companion, that is ready to take action when my car’s batteries need charging.

    Ideal
This is an ideal charger to keep in the car and for when you are away and don’t have access to a built in wall charger. Ideal if your staying somewhere where they don’t have an ev. Comes with a good storage bag so it’s nice and neat in the car.
Although this does change slowly compared to the usual charging method this works well. The cables are very heavy duty which is great but could be an issue if you have limited space.
Overall I’m very impressed and this gives me peace of mind that I have them in the car.

Useful standby for hungrier larger eVs
We have a wall charger for our eV and this three pin (thus reliant on ring mains) charger is a useful standby in case our main wall charger goes wonky (hasn’t in five years but there is always a potential first time). It is also useful to have a fallback charger for when we have friends stay who do not have eV compatible with our wall charger.

I do suggest you DYOR because when I tested it using a normal house socket I experienced the modest charge rate of about 8 mph that I had always understood went with plug into socket chargers. Our car is 5 years old, large and thus will be hungrier and less efficient than an up to date smaller saloon or hatchback. We do not have 3 phase and if your home does then I speculated that maybe this Type 2 charger might have the capacity to charge at a faster rate. However, the tech spec (see later) states max output 2.99 kWh and this will be the limiting factor. I am not sure 3 phase is going to alter the fact that you will be drawing on ring mains.

Do check the charge speed based on your home set up if you want to use it as your main charger. If using it when going away, it will provide some charge at a destination if you are running low but my understanding is that it will not rapid charge using a three pin plug into a conventional socket in a house.

It is in my view in any event pitched at a level that I would expect for a back up/spare charger rather than the main one for a car that is used regularly and do not feel it could be expected to defy the physics of ring mains.

I was slightly puzzled by the reference to adding 29 miles per hour and thought I may have missed a setting when doing a trial charge. As a double check I went back to ‘the maximum output pier is 2.99 kw’ on the technical specification. Our eV has a 100 kw battery thus a full charge would take 33 hours. We get (real world) about 285 miles from a full charge, which equates to about 8.5 miles per hour of charge. We use 6 hours per night of cheap electricity and this means we will get say 50 miles range per night’s charge.

A hatch back would (back of envelope calculation) achieve maybe 11 miles of range. The financial aspiration of many is to be able to charge at the very low night rate offered by some suppliers to those who have either a smart meter or the modern equivalent of economy 7 (dual priced meter). Our supplier, renowned for very low night rates, offers at least 6 hours (sometimes more depending on demand).

On that basis, the charger could add about 60 miles per night for an up to date efficient hatchback or smaller saloon for a weekday commute. A typical newer eV hatchback has a range from full charge of 140 miles. This means that if you are able to top it up over the weekend to full (either because you are adding 60 miles per night x 3 nights you are not using over the weekend or are prepared to use some day rate) then with a full charge on a Monday morning and adding 60 mph every weekday night, you could manage a weekday daily mileage of say 80 leaving some contingency for getting stuck in a traffic jam.

On that basis, this charger could be used as the main charger for a smaller or more efficient eV if you want to only use low cost night rate and only need 60-80 mph of range during the week. Given you can often top up at the workplace, supermarket or similar at higher cost then I don’t think this charger would be too limiting for more up to date efficient and smaller eVs.
