My daughter (11) has recently started to use a Raspberry Pi with Python to enhance her STEM skills, particularly for reacting to weather. As a novice she has barely scratched the surface of what all the components in this incredibly comprehensive SunFounder kit offers but has made a little temperature alarm and a couple of other simple experiments. It’s a fantastic all-in-one kit that will give her loads of opportunity to learn and build more complex things. We have found that the instructions are useful and the additional website information fills in any gaps.

Wow, this many components for 55.99 is VERY good value! Be warned, though: it’s a bit of a Pandora’s Box: once you open the box, you’re never going to get everything back in, LOL! Not a complaint, though, just an observation. So. On with the review.

Used a Raspberry Pi Pico W with this kit and the components tried so far have all worked well and give a great sense of accomplishment when you see them working at your command. There’s also a good range, with a motor, speaker and two display screens, as well as more standard sensors leading to some interesting possibilities.

The instructions, while online, are well laid out, which means the code can be copied easily. Plenty of supplemental material elsewhere on the internet if you run into problems.

The breadboard had issues with the wires not always getting a good connection.
The instructions while comprehensive did have some minor mistakes here and there for the Pico. In fact, the pin numbering in the code on the first lesson is different from the image given.

Not recommended for a complete beginner because a bit too much can go wrong – from faulty connections to out of date software and documentation, so there was some frustration. A complete novice working on their own may too easily get stuck and give up.

Perfect for a school teacher wanting to introduce basic electronics/coding to their class, or someone who enjoys tinkering and already has at least some experience in coding or basic electronics.

Love having kits like this, just the sheer variety of little components get me excited to start experimenting and making things.

All you need to pair with this is a microcontroller and you could create 100s of projects, would work with any board with GPIO raspberry pi, pi zero, pi pico, arduino, esp32 etc. There’s alot of community support out there for all those so its a great time to get into the hobby.

Quality wise they’re great value, I’ve used tonnes of SunFounder modules in the past, they never disappoint.

Sadly the price of these kits has increased since I started years ago but they still represent good value if you want variety and don’t know what you need, would make a great gift or treat for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners or tinkerers

With this maker kit you can really achieve a lot, it is fantastic to see that they are trying to bring engineering to youngest in best way. This kit provides all sorts of displays, breadboard, motion sensors, various modules, wires and even battery itself with dedicated battery cable. There is truly no limit to what you can do with this, doesn’t matter what project you have in head it will provide you with tools to make it. Great to see that whole kit is fully compatible with modern raspberry pi 5 as well going to back to 2 and pico, this is much easier environment to work with than Arduino however Arduino is supported as well.

Definitely having tons of modules is great however there is no use if you don’t know how to use them so here is best part; they are providing step by step tutorial and learning courses on how to make it, program it in many languages like C/C++ and python. This kit is fantastic for kids, to introduce basic programming and writing scripts as well engineering when comes to soldering individual components. Very happy with this kit.

This product was sent to me for review, as part of Amazon Vine. The below is my own real-world experience of using it.

I was particularly drawn to it, because I have a child who is interested in STEM/engineering, and would find this kit especially interesting. It is also something that I would like to have a go at with them – I’ve never built anything like this before, so my review will be coming from a very novice angle.

In terms of quality, everything comes well-presented inside the sturdy plastic case, but it is absolutely jam-packed full of components, so care should be taken not to lose or mix anything up (they are also sealed inside electrostatic safe bags). There is a handy guide included, so that you can identify all of the pieces at a glance, whilst you can also visit the brand’s website for further information/tutorials.

Overall, it looks to be a great kit that I will definitely spend some time getting stuck into. A good value item.

My mind has been blown with this very well priced kit, almost all the sensors you will ever need to have a little fun. It’s been a long time since i used C++ and i’m finding it fun again. just started trying to get feedback using the moisture sensor and then displaying readings (god I’m getting old) I remember years ago when the display would have cost me 20 but now you get all this I/O bits for 55. I highly recommend this kit and I’ll feed back my results and findings after fully testing so all in all 5 stars

Great way to repurpose an old Raspberry Pie and learn some new skills in the process. The difficult part for me is choosing which project to run with as any that I choose will require a decent investment of time. As a beginner to this type of thing, I’ve had to spend a good few hours already just to get my head round some of the things the kit is capable of doing. Great value kit and a lot of potential projects to keep me amused for months, possibly years.

I’m a software engineer who works ins a small team which often involves prototyping things using Arduinos and you would be shocked how often 99p parts from random kits like this either make it into a product, or at least the prototyping stages.

This is a really nice selection of items, that would be perfect for a child who wants to learn programming or basic electrical engineering, and theres no way that you could put this together for less buying all the parts individually. Its shockingly good value.

The real value of this over other kits though is the online manual on the sunfounder website, which includes code and wiring examples for almost all of the components of the kit. Its not a complete beginners guide, so you may need to refer to the arduino pages to learn what some of the terms mean, but is significantly better than nothing which is what you get with the single modules if you buy those.

For that reason alone I highly recommend this kit.

This is packed with sensors, so much so in fact that I had issues closing the nice plastic storage box it all comes in after my first rummage.

The quality is what you’d expect but it’s certainly more than good enough for general hobbying and your first dabbles in electronics.

Everything is wrapped in ISD safe envelopes and there are instructions online to use them in a variety of projects. YouTube is also a great place to learn about how to use a lot of this with an Arduino or similar processor.

I’m love how these affordable kids have started coming out of China to make a great hobby for people.

This review is for SunFounder Universal Maker Sensor Kit Compatible with Arduino Mega 2560/Uno R3/R4 Minima/WiFi Nano, Raspberry Pi 5/4B/3B+/Zero 2 W/, Pico W, ESP32, C++, Python, MicroPython, Beginners & Engineers

I received this to review as part of the Amazon vine program.

This kit looks to be ideal for people who like to tinker around with electronics. There are no instructions in the box, but there is a link to a website that looks to have very good instructions. I think this would make a great gift for someone interested in electronics and programming. I have just got a raspberry pi and am very new to this, so it will be steep learning curve, but am excited to start. It is nice knowing I have such a wide ranging kit, as there are projects for all levels.

A fantastic kit for anyone looking to get into understanding electronics.

The kit consists of a whole bunch of different types of sensor, from common ones such as PIR or temperature, to rain and pressure sensors, together with a breadboard, connecting wires and various switches/controls.

The instructions are all online – link provided in the box, but you can find them by going to the SunFounder website and selecting the Online Tutorial link, followed by this product: Universal Maker Sensor Kit.
The kit is compatible with various computing devices, e.g. Rasberry Pi and the instructions have sections for each that take you through a number of projects. There’s 34 for the Rasberry Pi that take you from setting up the Rasberry Pi in the first place and running the code, building the electronics and writing functions to control it. Even if you’re completely new to this, the instructions are clear enough to help you through, although be warned – this kit requires substantial investment of time to take full advantage of.

The only downside is that the kit comes in a plastic box with most of the bits squeezed into the base in unlabeled individual plastic bags. It’s a very tight squeeze such that if you open it and take some out to look it’s a real challenge putting them all back, although once removed from the bags, it’s a little easier, but more chance of damage then. It’s worth investing in a much larger box to collect a kit that is likely to grow with time.

The kit is quite a lot of money, but it’s as much an investment as it is a “toy” or “hobby” item. I’d have absolutely loved to get something like this when I was 14, although I might have needed a little hand-holding at first. The rewards though! It’s a great way to get into both electronics and low-level computer programming and trust me when I say, this combination of skills are in very high demand, not to mention the general benefits you get from simply stretching your brain in this way.
