Great portable ham radio to help me learn the hobby
I have been studying for my Ham foundation license. I wanted an affordable radio to start me with the hobby.

I saw that this came well received and recommended so I went for it.

I also bought a PC cable so that I could install the chirp software and program it for the local repeaters and net frequencies.

I’ve also used the menus to do the same and found the manual ok for doing that, but also found some good online vids talking through what it all meant as i learned.

This was all new to me but I’ve found this a great starting point as i study the foundation course.

I’m still listening at the moment but hopefully will soon get my callsign and be able to start pushing to talk and legally making local “CQ” calls.

I’ll likely install a raised arial in my house as i am in a bowl which limits what i can pick up in doors, though I’m getting local repeaters and some local stations.

Overall a great gateway to the hobby. Works well and doesn’t break the bank.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGood starter ham VHF/UHF radio.
Good starter radio for new Ham user. Can transmit FM across non broadcast VHF and UHF, plus listen to AM air band and VHF radio broadcasts. . It can be used to scan channels. I added a hand mic, longer aerial and larger battery.

It is up to the user to use this legally.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI love my Baofeng!
I would absolutely recommend this as the entry-level unit – USB-C charging, better screen and the additional aircraft band (receive only) are 100% worth the extra price over the cheapest model. I really like listening in to the local air traffic control – yes it’s really nerdy but it’s interesting!

Built like a rock and excellent battery life. The removable belt-clip is solid.

I would say the USB programming cable is absolutely essential, so you’ll need one of those and the free ‘Chirp’ application for your computer.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGood radio for ATC listeners
Good radio, a bit fiddly programming the frequencies in but now able to listen to ATC both planes on approach and on the ground.

However did have to return a radio as it was faulty and turned itself off. Second one seems to be working faultless

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersVery impressed for the price
I am an amateur radio operator and have found it a very nice radio for the price. Been using it up the hills with a 70cm and 2m combined beam on a tripod. Great fun and the display screen is very good and easily readable. Radio computer software called CHIRP works a treat with it for simple programming of the radio. The antenna that came with it works well. Although, I have bought a tribander antenna with a female SMA connection and this has got me some good long distant contacts.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat value and identicial to the AR-5RM unlocked US model
Great value and pretty good radios. Mine were basically identical to the AR-5RM in every way including frequency ranges (both tx and rx) and physical form. These radios are capable of tx/rx on 2m, 1.25m and 70cm (tri-band) so a lot more than advertised

A nice upgrade from the UV5R
Seems more sensitive than my 5R. Some reviewers say the Airband isn’t proper am. I have to say the am audio leaves a bit to be desired. The menu settings being in red don’t show up too well. Overall for the price it’s ok.

    Cheap amateur radio
This radio is an upgrade to the famous Baofeng UV – 5R. It cover the same 2m and 70 cm amateur bands – in addition it also covers air band (listening only) and also broadcast radio.

It has many more memory locations nearly 1000 as opposed to 130 or so. It can be programmed by Chirp and is recognised by that program now.

It has a bigger battery and consequently a claimed 10W output. From the reviews I have seen this is more like 8W, but this is reasonable. The supplied Aerial is longer and more flexible than the UV-5R. Tests tend to show a bit of a ‘dirty’ signal on transmit, but it could be worse. It definitely varies between each radio.

As mentioned the battery is bigger, but you can also charge it via a usb C lead – instead of the usual desk top charger. Nice.

Like any radio there is a learning curve, but the basics are fairly intuitive.

It is illegal to transmit using this radio if you don’t have an amateur radio licence.

All in all this is a very useful piece of kit for an amazingly low price. Definitely worth upgrading.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGute Funktio

Radio amatoriale multibanda Baofeng UV-5RM Plus
Antenna flessibile anzich rigida come nell’UV-5R.

    BAOFENG RADIO
Just found out the fm radio works better than the CB my own CB can’t transport to the same frequency and vice versa obviously need buy another BAOFENG radio to talk between them but I will keep it and play with it to see if I can connect to anyone els in the uk, also I think the aerial is too small I will at some stage upgrade it to a larger one.!
