Detailed model with easy to follow instructions
This is a brilliant Lego model set. It is very large and takes quite some time to build. I have been building it in the evenings for over a week and still have quite a lot to go. The bags are numbered and the instructions are easy to follow. This is a very detailed build. Its fun, and great for winding down at the end of the day.
Incredible, mind-blowing and great fun to build, albeit with time and patience needed
Fantastically detailed Lego set that arrives in 27 individual bags with a grand total of 3601 pieces. Suitable for gifting, you will soon decide to keep this for yourself, as I have, even after seeing the novel-like instruction manual which is also incredibly detailed, and in colour.
Essentially, I constructed the launch pad, which actually uses up a large proportion of the Lego pieces and was the most challenging to put together. This is because of the similarity in a number of the parts. The multi-stage rocket came next and took much less time and pieces (obviously) to construct. With time and lots dedication and focus, this could be constructed in a day, but I was a slow and part-time constructor and therefore took the best part of a good few after-work evenings to complete.
The launch pad was the most frustrating part to construct and consequently was the most satisfying to complete. An impressive achievement with an end product where you can retract the umbilicals, rocket support and crew bridge. The rocket, whilst simpler ad quicker is also impressive and has a booster separates from its rocket body.
The attention to detail is incredible and worth the time and effort taken to construct although the addition of stickers to complete the job feels very much like an after-thought.
Post construction, it became a 2ft rocket with launch pad that is quite hefty but actually very stable and solidly constructed. Quite achievement considering the large number of pieces that were involved in its construction.
At over 200, this is a rather large commitment to make, but it is well worth the monies. It’s very involved and the output, the final size and its ability to be an attractive centre stage piece means it is money well spent, particularly for the avid Lego constructors and enthusiasts.
Finally, keep the Lego pieces away from cats because, as I found, the small pieces quickly become an attractive cat toy !!
I hope you found this review helpful.
Largest and most Satisfying LEGO Builds
This is truly an absolute masterful example of LEGO doing what LEGO does best, by far one of the largest and most challenging LEGO Sets I have built but also one of the most rewarding. This is definitely a set aimed at experienced builders and it showcases the NASA Artemis Space Launch Platform. As someone who has always loved space and the science of space travel, this is such an iconic piece and I had the pleasure of building it with my nephew who will be doing a full school project on NASA when he goes back to school so this made it the perfect project for us to close out the summer holidays.
This is by far one of the most detailed LEGO sets at 3601 pieces so this is going to take you some time, we built this over two weeks as a project. It features a fully detailed Launch platform with working mechanisms, a multi stage rocket with boosters can detach and a payload system revealing a satellite. Being so detailed, the instructions are key and as usual LEGO instructions are amazing with a pictorial booklet that also shows some history of the Artemis but I found the downloadable PDF instructions to be the best method as on a smart device like a tablet, you can zoom in close to the instructions.
This is also a very large set to build, when completed the height alone will make this a challenging set to display but an iconic one. I have already spoken with my Nephew’s teacher and have offered to let them have this fully built set to help illustrate Artemis when they start their school project and I know it will help illustrate just how iconic this was for NASA and Space science. This is a challenging set to build but so worth while.
Blast off
This is a huge Lego set. It’s not meant for playing, it really is a model kit as the description explains. It is a bit of an investment, but this is hours of fun. I find building Lego kits like this a really relaxing way to unwind after a stressful day at work. I have built this over about a month and really enjoyed taking my time with it. Overall the build was fun, but it was challenging too. I had to disassemble and reassemble a few sections, but that was my fault not following the instructions properly and trying to race ahead without thinking more carefully about what I was doing and how each bit would be used later on. The instructions are good and I find them well presented, but you do have to pay attention as there is a lot going on and different parts linking together. It looks really good when assembled, it is big so you might want to think about where you would keep it – it certainly is a talking point though! This isn’t for young kids but older teenagers and adults will enjoy building it. I really like the attention to detail and I think the designers have done an excellent job in creating the set. This would make a great gift for a space enthusiast!
I love it!
Good set for NASA fans
The LEGO Icons NASA Artemis Space Launch System Set is a beautiful model. While the model captures the excitement of this historic mission, I am giving it only 4 stars due to slight lacking of details.
As seeing the finished work in the Lego store, it is quite large. So it will be expected to take a bit of time to build. Due to the design, the construction process is repetitive and not very engaging. Large parts of the model consist of nearly identical structures built with the same LEGO pieces over and over again. The tower, in particular, consists of nine almost identical levels, which becomes tedious and unappealing. It is less fun than other Lego set we built. Also, having to attach stickers for the NASA lettering and other details is a bit of letdown. It’s disappointing that these elements aren’t printed directly on the bricks, especially for a premium set.
This set is more suitable for adults than children, but there is no reason why children can’t build it with their parents/adults. Overall, while the LEGO Icons NASA Artemis SLS set is visually striking, the repetitive build, use of stickers detract from the overall experience, making it less enjoyable than expected for the price.
Fascinating and detailed
Building this model was an enjoyable and fulfilling task. The level of detail, from the rocket stages to the launch tower, is impressive, making it a great display piece. It adds a fascinating space theme to my workspace. The instructions were clear, making the assembly process smooth. Perfect for anyone who enjoys detailed projects.
Great display piece, good value for money, slightly tedious building experience.
This is a Lego Icons NASA Artemis space launch system set, the Icons range is targeted at the experienced builder as sets may contain many, smaller and somewhat intricate parts, this set includes an orion capsule and launch tower and comprises of over 3600 pieces.
Item arrives in Lego branded box which is suitable for gifting, this is a very large set, hence a very large box too, contains separately bagged pieces and glossy instruction booklet.
The set is comprised of two distinct elements, the launching platform and the rocket, with functionality included in both items.
The launch tower has retracting umbilicals, rocket support and a crew bridge, whilst the rocket features booster separation with the ability to jettison the solid fuel boosters and the ability to detach the module and solar panels in order to display.
I constructed this set over several days, hence I chose not to post a review until i had completed the build, my final thoughts dependant on building experience, piece count and price are highlighted below.
The building experience was dependant on the individual sections, whilst I found the actual rocket build to be a very enjoyable experience, the launch pad section was by comparison a somewhat tedious affair.
Unfortunately considering the launch pad section utilises around two thirds of the pieces, construction of it had to be broken down into a few hourly stints in order to complete, although this was perhaps largely due to the small intricate pieces utilised in this section of the build, but you could always employ additional help if required.
Piece count is hefty and hence value for money is also considerable, though I’m sure Lego could have utilised differing parts for some sections that were larger but would have also lowered that piece count, that said with the end product standing at almost 2ft tall, it’s a remarkable display piece assuming you have the vertical room for it.
The other minor niggle is the use of stickers in this set, printed elements next time please, especially when a set is retailing at this pricepoint.
A great experience of building for the rocket section, a slightly tedious building experience of the platform section, stickers instead of printed elements, a fantastic display piece and good rather than great value for money due to it’s inflated piece count.
I award this a four star rating, as although the end product warrants higher as it’s such a marvelous display piece, it’s difficult to award five stars based on the building experience of a section of it alone, especially when some similar larger parts coul be available that could have alleviated some of that tedious launch tower build.
The inclusion of stickered elements is also definitely a no go considering a pricepoint like this, that said if you have assistance and/or patience, the end result is fantastic as a display piece, unfortunately by their nature Lego sets have to be judged on both the building experience and the end result, therefore a four star product it is then.
Remarkable build
Lego for adults is a great concept and this is a pinnacle what can be achieved. Being given the option to get this as a lover of space in general i could talk about this all day.
Its typical high quality lego, all the bricks are tight, the instructions are REALLY good building this with my partner were using a mix of the app and the instructions. The small details of the build like the launch station having combined inter-connected parts when its rotated just ticks the happy feels in the brain and make you want to be a kid again.
The fiddle potential thing this is completed will be unlimited with so many interactive parts and as were building it were realising…this thing is 2/3rd a meter high! Its not big, its gigantic!
Lastly you can tell this was designed and released with so much love from the details in the manual, before you even get the build instructions theres pages about the mission, the ship itself and the history it with nasa which is just so good as my partner who had no interest in space was immensely intrigued to it.
I absolutely love that Lego makes a more detailed range for adults, why should the kids have all the fun. My uncle recently had a Lego Bugatti set and loved it, so I was keen to do this one.
This Lego set is amazing, it’s so detailed in its design and the clever way it comes together in its construction as baffling.
You start with what looks like a few random pieces and as it takes shape you start to see the platform appear before your eyes. There are pipe runs, guard rails and some hidden features that only the builder will see but it gives you that extra feeling of accomplishment.
I’ve not built anything from Lego since I was a boy, so this 18+ set is challenging but by following the comprehensive instructions, still within the ability of my aging brain.
As you can see, I am still in the early building stages but am just loving it. I look forward to the end of the workday and spending a good couple of hours building. So much fun and great for switching off after a stressful day at the office.
Warning, once you start, it is addictive. The pieces come in 27 numbered bags, so you open each complete the chapter, then move on to the next.
