Prepare yourself for an ironing additio
I have had many irons over the years, in an effort to get a professional finish and finally found the “Holy Grail” of irons. It gives a truly professional finish, the iron itself is light, no burning even if left on fabric (who does that) no need to set temperature, it does it for you. powerful steam, also a turbo steam feature, quick heat up, easy clean of filter if you have chalky water (I don’t). Definitely cut down the ironing time. Just turned what is usually a chore into actually something I look forward to doing. I did a lot of research (over two weeks) before deciding on this one and it has exceeded my expectations.

I’ve had a steam generator iron before but this out performs any iron I’ve had before. I have no idea how the technology works but it just does. I’ve tried it and tested it on all sorts of fabrics just daring it to stick or burn but it doesn’t, The automatic steam feature is great too, Every time you move the iron steam is pumped to the sole plate. There are options such as eco or even more steam but have only used these a few times. I find the main one just about covers everything. Just a niggle of how long such complicated technology will last, had my old steam gen iron for around 10 years. Also I dont see anyone else being able to use this iron so I’ve made a rod for my own back in being the only one who knows how it works. Could do with a few instructions on the iron not on a piece of paper that I know is going to get lost.

    Worth every penny.
I can’t say a single bad thing about this iron, it does everything it claims to do and my ironing pile has never been done so quickly and with such ease! If you’re doing a lot of ironing in one go then use the board over a hard floor and have a small towel handy to mop up the water drips as there will be quite a bit from all the steam passing through the board.

Bought this steam generator to replace another Philips generator which gave up after 10 years of use. Very impressed, love the fact that there is no need to alter the temperature control. Speeds through ironing. Highly recommend

Good iron, steam hose not long enough
Great iron. Steam boost occurs a minute or so after iron beeps as ready.
Storage packaging for steam hose and power lead is poor design/insuffient
Only gripe… the steam hose is very SHORT, on a large ironing board it’s difficult to reach the other end.

I had the previous version for years, got this on a deal and thought why not?

I absolutely love these, you fly through the ironing. Yes they’re expensive but soooooo worth it. A normal iron is just naff when compared. I will never go back to a normal iron.

The fact that you don’t have to set temperature is also a bonus and works well. Just buy one.

    Oh My Grosg
I have always had phillips steam generators and was very reluctant to bight the bullet and get a new one (my old one was least 15 years old and getting to hot when ironing). I wish I had got it a little sooner. Sooo quiet, powers through ironing, lightweight. I think the only drawback is that the steam is so intense it uses water a lot quicker than my old one . Hey, ho it was old. Fabulous.

I really like the steam generator on the whole. It replaces an older Morphy Richards which broke. I like the detachable water tank and the locking mechanism which allows me to carry it around without fear of dropping and breaking it. It cuts down on ironing time massively and I can iron just about anything, including synthetic sports kits. It’s a bit pricey and sometimes lets a bit of water escape from the sole plate rather than steam. For those reasons I give it 4 stars and not 5.

    Love this iron!
Have only had it a few weeks, but it’s such a lovely iron to use. Not too noisy so can watch TV at the same time and it speeds through the ironing in no time. The only drawback I can think of is the cord storage but otherwise it’s a fantastic iron.

  11. Anonymous says:

Very good but you need to mean it.
Step change up from a steam iron. Great gouts of steam mean things like duvet covers can be pressed whilst folded twice and you can also steam anything whilst hanging. Carrying arrangements don’t inspire confidence as it’s quite heavy. Bulky to store.

    Excels in every promise!
Having experience with 2 different brands of steam generators, this Philips product is the absolute top! not having to worry on temperature, a sole that doesn’t burn, generating generous steam and of course the continuous steam function are for me rating this product as the absolute best ever: it is worth every pound!

I have initially only awarded 4 out of 5 stars as I have no idea how long this unit will work. Maybe another star if it is still working in 2 years time.

The iron has no temperature control but adjusts to whatever the fabric you are ironing with the option to use steam for creases. Be aware it is a substantial unit which may cause storage issues. They also recommend mixing de-ionised water with the tap water.

This is an awesome machine, we had another Phillips a much older model for 5 years until it stopped working. This is much lighter and soooooo much quieter. The only slight criticism is that the water container is about half the size of our old model but other than that it’s awesome

Really loved how easily the creases came out! Only need to iron 1 side of a T-shirt, dress or trousers and the other side is also ironed, therefore cutting ironing time in half. Also do not need to worry about burning items as the technology ensures that your clothes wont burn. Brilliant Product.

This replaced a Bosch iron. That unfortunately went wrong after 6 months. I am over the moon with this iron. Very easy to use and much quieter than my last one.

If you want constant steam a double tap on the steam button and it continues on it own. If you want a stronger steam press and hold the button on the base.

Temperature has not been and issue and adjusts to all the clothes that I’ve ironed.

Personally I highly recommend this iron.

    Quality steam generating iro
This is a very good steam generating iron. First impressions were how nice it was in appearance. It is very elegant looking, much moreso than my old Tefal steam generator iron. The removable water tank makes filling it with water so easy (unlike my old Tefal). The iron is ready to use in 2 minutes. A beeping sound let’s you know that it’s ready to use. The iron works incredibly well with a good even distribution of steam that makes short work of ironing. With the iron being very light weight, it is easy to maneuver. The only negative about performance is that I find water leaks from the iron during the first minute of use. Recently I’ve tried using the iron on a board with no clothing due a short while to try and avoid getting water on clothing. The length of power lead and steam iron lead is good. There are handy storage compartments for both too, which again my Tefal did not have. Overall I’m very pleased with the iron and would recommend.

I have used this for the last few months and it has worked flawlessly. It has transformed ironing – and makes it so easy to get great results. For example a dry linen shirt is a real pain to get nicely pressed, but this makes it a doddle. I could not recommend it more highly, although I only had a 1400W steam iron to compare it against – it suits me fine.

No more ironing piles in my home!
Spent decades having piles of ironing to do. My Tefal iron died and my sister in law recommended a steam generator iron. Researched into it and Phillips irons are my favourites. Really didn’t want to spend so much, but took the plunge and OMG I love it. I got through the ironing in no time at all. You don’t have to iron most things on both sides! It holds a lot of water so no having to constantly refill. So time saving and you don’t worry about what material it is, you just grab next item to iron and iron away. If in doubt, don’t, just get it and see how much more time you have to do better things than iron!

Love this iron. Had a tefal before and this is so much better. Turbo steam is a big bonus too. Much cheaper than other supplies and delivery via Royal Mail was okay but still not Amazon Prime speed and reliability, so if you need this urgently you will need to shop elsewhere. Would definitely recommend.

Super speedy ironing, but might be leaking!
First time I have used a steam generator iron before was sceptical as the other half said they’re no good! First impressions we’re very good, is a little big but you expect that for what it is. Very quick and easy to use Was amazed how quick the ironing pile went down. I think the other half has converted also as I have heard no complaints from her and have noticed she irons more bonus! Have notice on occasion it leaks water even though it is up to temp and pressure not sure why! Might get in touch with Phillips about this if it get more regular!

Great equipment for professional finish, excellent safety feature, but needs space for storage.
Brilliant for all fabrics and easy to use, it glides over all garments and the tip is great for tricky details when dressmaking. Switches off after 10 minutes of inactivity so it is ideal if you are forgetful at unplugging the iron after use. I would recommend this if you are a dressmaker, or have seriously lots of ironing to do, as it is expensive. However, if you haven’t the space for storing when not in use, it is rather a large piece of equipment.

    Solid steam iron.
The reviews for this steam iron are very mixed, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I’ve been using it for few weeks now and I love it. Compare to my previous Bosch one, this model is way better.
It’s so lightweight and glides so easily on fabric. The noise that it makes doesn’t bother me, it’s not that loud, just when it heats up.
The design is cool, looks stylish on my iron board.
So far so good, especially after a model that had 4 bars. And I love the turbo mode, I use it in vertical ironing or for tough fabric.
Solid choice for me, I’m glad with the purchase.

Puts the joy back into ironing.
We are thrilled with this iron and this make. We have had Tefal steam generator irons before – one decent that lasted some years and then Tefal Fasteo that was far too tinny and flimsy. This make and style comes with a great reputation and it lives up to all that it promises. Being able to leave the iron face down on the ironing board and the ability to take the water tank out and fill and empty it and huge pluses. Really happy with this selection. It puts the joy back into ironing.

    Very good but very expensive!
The iron is very impressive, it does what it says on the box (almost) and makes ironing less of a chore. It did heat up within 2 minutes and I had steam whenever I needed it. It is nice that you can put the iron down and leave it without fear of burning the board cover. It is also light and glides easily over the fabric.
Having had a steam generator iron for nearly 10 years (Tefal) I knew what to expect in terms of noise and a wet floor, and despite this Philips iron being listed as silent steam it is not silent, as with all steam generators there is a lot of noise as the appliance moves water into the boiler (which happens quite often) and the steam coming from the iron as you use it is not ‘silent’, so don’t buy it and expect it to be noise free. The wet floor is something that you have to live with if you use a steam generator, I’m lucky that I use mine in the kitchen that has a tiled floor, if you want to iron in a carpeted room you’ll need to put a waterproof sheet down to catch the drips. Good ventilation is also a pre requisite – the steam does tend to fog up the room! You’ll also need to wipe down the board before you put it away.
Having had a Tefal with an automated retractable lead and plug I will have to get used to manually folding the lead on this one to stow it away – not a major thing but it would be nice if Philips could follow Tefal in this, especially given the very high price that they are charging.
I would definitely recommend the iron but its price is high which is my only criticism.

Not the cheapest of irons but it really is great to use. I use it on eco-mode and auto steam and can get through 20 shirts with ease. I can also leave it plate down on the ironing board between shirts with no problems (although if you knock the board the iron moves, it thinks you’re ironing and gives a small burst of steam – just be gentle 🙂 )

Superb Steam Generator Iron. Philips quality in built. Customer driven with additional features to make life easier for those with vast amounts of ironing. Like me!

Steam output: 120 g/min with shot of steam. Great for blasting those heavily creased items of clothing.

Power: 2600 W – consistency when ironing so guaranteed results.

Reservoir capacity: 1800 ml and the reservoir is detachable, for extremely easy refilling

Love it, personally it is a lot of money to pay for, well, put basically, an iron. However the time it gives me back, to get through a stack of the stuff has made it a perfect early Christmas present.

Expensive but I do love it! Very easy to use and lightweight. Love that it can be left face down without burning. Also love the auto steam function, which delivers steam when you are moving the iron and automatically stops when the movement stops. I like this better than the Tefal stesm generators I’ve had. However, I’m not sure it’s superior enough to warrant the fairly substantial price difference. I bought it at sale price – definitely works never pay the full 520 for it!

Great iron for when you have a lot of ironing to do.
Takes two mins to warm up but once there ironing is quick and easy.
Cotton sheets that can be a real pain when left dry and scrunched up done in no time.
Has a ‘turbo’ boost for those few nasty jobs.
Also eco mode great on synthetic/mixed fabrics.
Base unit is heavy to carry but once in place the iron itself is light enough to use without being so light you have to push down to remove the creases.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersBest steam generator ever, well worth the money
I have had many steam generators over the last decade from morphy Richards to tefal, the latter being my recent one, I only had the tefal one for a few years before it started spitting out brown stuff all over the clothes I was ironing, it had to be the worst steam generator that I had ever had and I didn’t want to make the same mistake again so I researched and did my homework before I made my decision on this Philips one, yes it’s a bit on the pricey side but in my opinion it is worth every penny spent, it’s absolutely amazing, I thought I wouldn’t like the fact that you couldn’t stand it up on the ironing board as I did that with all my others but you get used to leaving it face down on the ironing board as the intelligent system recognises that you’re not moving it so there’s no chance of burning the cover, you have the choice to let the iron put the steam out for you by pressing the on button for two seconds until it lights up white, then you press the button on top till that turns white, all you have to do is start ironing, the steam that it generates is outstanding, the only thing with so much steam is that I have to put a waterproof sheet down on the floor underneath my ironing board to catch the drips but the pros to this product outweighs the cons, I can’t sing this irons praises enough, the best steam generator I’ve ever, ever had, I absolutely love it, now ironing is a pleasure and not a chore!

Worth every penny. Has a no burn feature that automatically adjusts the temperature for the type of material and so far it’s been brilliant. It doesn’t stand up on its own but as it doesn’t burn you can leave it face down in between items. I purchased this at special rate of 299 and I was worried about it being fake. No need to worry. It definitely isn’t. I was amazed. I don’t like ironing but this iron makes it so much easier and quicker. Somehow it manages to reduce the need to pull and stretch clothes to avoid creases, and if you crease by accident, it’s easy to get them out. The quality of the ironing you produce is so much better than normal. I honestly felt like a pro. I have a cleaner who irons and I think the cost of this will be paid back in reduced time needed. I had no idea a generator iron (or maybe just this generator iron) could make such a difference. It is brilliant, the iron itself is ultra light and simply glides through the ironing. I can’t believe I didn’t buy one earlier. Expensive, I know, but worth every single penny. I love it (as much as you can love something so mundane)

    The best Iron ever made!!
Although expensive compared to other irons, this machine really is a professional piece of equipment. Although the base part is large and bulky, the hand held iron is much lighter than normal, never burns and adjusts temperature according to textile automatically. Very clever invention, this.

This is a great iron! The main unit is quite heavy but I move mine around as I can’t leave my ironing board out (cats use it to sit on and look out of the window). Once the unit is in place though the iron itself is not too heavy. The features of this make it so useful like the one setting for all fabric types, quick heat up and of course the intelligent steam function which I love. The large water storage means I need to fill up less often and that means I get less distracted when I have a large pile of ironing to do. Although I love this machine i wouldn’t buy it full price, Amazon had the best price at the time so I would shop around. You will need to buy an ironing board for a steam generator iron, if this is your first one like me. Other than that I’m very happy with my purchase.

This is my second Phillips Steam Generator with Optimal Temperature. I only replace my first one because the sole plate came away at the front after 4 years of use. I don’t know if it is repairable, but it seemed a good idea to buy a new one. Very good iron and wonderful not having to think of changing the temperature settings. I find it irons everything very well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersToo pricey, cable and steam hose compartment poor.
Unfortunately I had to replace my old steam generator as it decided to pump out steam continuously. After reading the rave reviews for this one and the fact that it was at sale price I bought it. Though at full price it cists nearly 4 times as much as my old one it isn’t 4 times better. It is light and doesn’t burn the fabric of the the clothes nor the ironing board (can’t stand it on end when not holding it as has no flat end, so only option is to leave it face down on the board or put it back on the generater each time). It takes somegetting used to just leaving it face down. I don’t think it manages the creases as well as my older one. The iron is very light and you get plenty of steam just not the level of finish I expect from this type of pricey item. The cable tidy and steam hose compartment are very poorly designed, which can lead to creating kinks in both I would much rather be able wind both around the item itself or have the cable automatically returned. All in all I find it OK but definitely would not recommend it to be bought at full price. There are better, cheaper models out there or if this is the one you covert wait for the sale price.

    Light and sleek
What I liked about the iron was its sleek design. Able to iron most clothing but not too great on tough linen shirts. The annoying bit is ot being able to leave it standing on the iron board when turning shirts, though it doesn’t burn the board face down just used to placing irons standing. Overall it’s a great product wife is happy with.

We haver had this for over a month now and I can say that this is the best iron I’ve used by far. There is an easy descaling option, great range of steam, eco and max options and you can leave the soleplate on the ironing board face down and it will not burn. The auto steam function is brilliant.

I am really happy with this item but the price is very steep for an iron, that is the only downfall with this iron.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFANTASTIC IRON..you will NOT be dissappointed
Fantastic iron ..for over 30 years I have swore by Tefal ….but I can gladly say I have jumped ship….I purchased this iron after researching its features…. ..I wanted to have it right away…so I searched where to purchase …John Lewis had them so I raced down there only to find it selling for 520.00…I took my phone out and ordered it on the spot whilst in the John Lewis from Amazon for 350.00 .
I have a injury to my arm and therefore cannot lift anything heavy…this iron is so light to lift …and every thing its says it does …I am so impressed there are no lots of different settings it is so intelligent you really can leave the iron on the ironing board without it burning, iron different textures without waiting to cool down. Real easy to use ..cuts ironing time in half
The only thing missing is retractable cord …but I can live with that. Going to purchase another for holiday. home .

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersWay better than Bosch
Best iron we have ever had, we have had 3 steam generator irons from Bosch over the years and they have been poor, running out of steam and leaking water.
This iron is a different class, auto steam is a dream when you move the iron out comes the steam, stop and it stops!
The iron itself is light and small and ironing is so much easier it glides over the material and doesn’t bunch it up and re-creace it like the bosch do.

Down side is the base is not quite as good a quality as the handle it feels brittle hard plastic and I really hope I don’t drop it as I doubt it would fare well, the iron on the other hand is absolute quality, very impressed!

It is a good iron though I really don’t think it is worth the money. Bought it because Which recommended it. It is lightweight thoug I don’t think it tapeams as well as my last. Iron which was Tefal. I couldn’t be bothered sending it back so it will do okay. But I wouldn’t buy it next time around. Think a little weight is needed for heavier items as steam is not enough. Temperature could be hotter at times. I don’t have a lot of ironing now but if I did I would have sent it back & purchases a Tefal. It doesn’t burn the cover when left face down, this is good but think it also says a lot about lack of temoerature.

bought this as a present for my sister so this review is based on her early experiences, build quality good, nice long cable between base and iron although the cable between base and plug a little short, very powerful steam output and no issues producing the steam, has reduced the time of ironing an average number of items by half, iron itself is super light reducing fatigue,we only held back on buying this item because of some diametrically opposite reviews, some of these negative reviews seem to stem from people not fully reading or understanding the instructions, will update this review after a few months use.

This is an expensive iron. I did get this at a reduced Christmas price. Beautiful iron visually. Easy to use no need to worry about temperature settings. Very light. Decent steam output. Only thing Phillips needs to work on is the cord storage. Need to incorporate a push button rewind cord storage like a certain Tefal model has, rather than trying to cram the cord into a gap in the side.

Irons very well and quieter than my previous steam generator, though it still makes occasional quiet chugging sounds. Very lightweight and easy to use but has no heel to stand it on – none of the info states this. So far the anti-burn feature means it has not yet singed my non-standard, cotton covered ironing board, but I bend down to rest it on the stand on the floor between items… just in case.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFantastic iron but comes at a price
This is a top end iron. It is sophisticated through intelligence which makes it very easy to use.

Will iron thick denim then straight into thin man made fibres. Can leave it face down on board and clothes so no need to twist and stand it to keeping space free on your board.

Will iron sheets which are layered and doubled over.

Eco mode, with reduced steam, is fine for shirts but need full power for heavy cotton.

Generates a lot of steam which blasts through clothes. Clothes can feel damp after but you can go over again without steam. Does steam a room up quickly so work with a window open or alfresco ironing in the summer.

The whole unit is bulky but easy to carry two handed. Light head unit would be good for anyone with grip weaknesses. But they may find moving the whole unit around a challenge.

The start up time is less than 2mins. The hose is long enough to have the base on the floor or on the board if stable.

Water capacity is good for at least 1 hour of ironing on full power.

The cable and hose storage is odd and takes some getting used to, but works and feels like it doesn’t stress the cable like the coil around my old iron.

You could buy multiple mid range irons for this price. I bought on Black Friday so a much lower than RRP. While a great iron the RRP is too high. Feel it should be perhaps 2 x a mid range iron / basic steam generator.

If you do a lot of ironing (love or hate it) this iron is worth the investment.

I had my previous iron for more than 10 years until it finally, well still working but chipped everywhere and fancy a change. I got this Philips as I’m impressed with the sensor technology.

I’ve had it now for 6 months, it is one of the best investment so far. It is light, you don’t have to use knobs to control the temperature as all is done via sensors and it will knownthe optimum temperature for the fabric and you could in fact leave it on the fabric without burning. It glides effortlessly and my husband really enjoyed the ironing he volunteers to do it every time, so really really good investment for me (that’s why it saves my time)

    Easy ironing
This is an expensive, high-spec machine, but it does everything so well that we justified buying it. And it is amazing. Very easy to use, as there is no need to change anything when moving from one type of material to another. Big and bulky base, but looks good even if you have to leave it out. The iron itself is very light. We reckon it saves about 50% of the time previously spent ironing, so that has to be taken into account when looking at the price. John Lewis were selling it 60 cheaper, but appear to have sold out. This is the last review I will do for Amazon, because it is tiresome having to have to get a verification code every time I want to write a review.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersIt’s perfect.
Why did I wait for so long to buy this one?!

I know why – it’s expensive. But absolutely worth it.

I live in London, so irons don’t last more than two years, and I had Philips Azure and Tefal Anti-Scale, using filtered water and regularly cleaning – still they died on me.

So I was reluctant to buy a steam generater knowing about the water hardness issue.

I found a philips jug filter which creates demineralised water and prolongs life of irons by 4 and decided to give a try to steam generator. It’s perfect.

Glides in any direction, irons in a second, has vertical ironing option, no need for fabric asjustment – it will never burn anything. I even tried ironing sometbing that has a label ‘no ironing’ and still it’s fine!

Takes aboit 2 minutes to heat up, and that’s when it’s noisy. Then you just click when you iron to steam and that’s pretty quiet. Water regeats every now and then.

My mum has a laurastar ironing station and this is as close as you can be to it without spending 1,500.

Please let me know if you found this review helpful, thank you!

how much for an iron?! My first car may have cost the same amount but this is a proper piece of ironing kit & literally halved the time taken to get through my usual load! I love not having to sort through the pile for all the cottons first and as I always used to iron my son’s school trousers too hot which always left a residue on my old iron, which I then tried to “wipe” off on the side of the ironing board I now have to do neither so still have a pristine iron and board. The iron itself is lightweight and can be left on the board between items without leaving a mark. Oh and it’s in my favourite colour!

This is an excellent steam generator iron, no need to change temperature for different fabrics amazingly it does it itself automatically. Gave it the ultimate test on some pure cotton sheets which are usually a beast to iron, not with this though. Much better than the normal steam generator we had before and light years ahead of an ordinary steam iron.

This has made ironing an enjoyable experience. I spent a lot of time looking through different steam irons, and felt this one was better me.
    I loved:
    the automatic temperature control,
    its auto-descale function,
    its lightweight iron,
you can leave it lying on the ironing board and it doesnt burn it

    I did not like:
I have found the fact you can only use water that has gone through the philips water filter a bit frustrating
It is a bulky piece of kit unlike a conventional iron ( not specific to this steam iron).

Now 300 plus for an iron is a lot, however, this is worth it.
It sailed through a huge stack of ironing in record time, it is easy to use, light and coped with over dry washing with ease.
Although not silent, it is a lot quieter than others I have used.
I was sceptical about the auto heat setting but it works like a dream.
Only negative points are that the handle creaks when using it and the steam is so powerful it goes through ironing board and drips on the floor, although this may be because of over zealous use of extra steam feature.

My third steam generator iron and it’s in a class of it’s own. Dealt with bone dry linen followed by a synthetic stretch fabric. I have no idea how it knows, but it does!! Masses of steam, a double click of the trigger gives continuous steam and it’s quiet. Really quiet! I will never love ironing, but this makes me hate it less. I tackled a basket of stuff I’ve been avoiding for ages – all extremely dry and full of creases. Far superior to the Bosch unit it replaced in terms of both noise and usage. It seems to glide easier and produces better results faster which is exactly what I wanted from a steamer like this.

Only negatives are that it is a bit big for most ironing boards and barely fits our large sized board and the connection between the actual iron and the base could be just a little longer which would make a big difference. Perhaps it is meant for shorter wide ironing boards?

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe Bench Mark for all other Steam Generators.
We bought this to replace an older Philip steam generator iron which had served us well but needed retirement. As the previous Philips had been so good we immediately looked at their products first. The main plus point of this generator is the steam power, it is head and shoulders better than any other on the market. The Iron plate itself is light and glides well and the water use has been improved as there are much fewer refills than before. The perfect care means you don’t have to change settings and the steam boost is strong enough to take out the most stubborn creases. It can be a bit noisy when generating steam – as they all can – but it is very quick to heat up and can work continuously for a long time without any issue. A must for anyone who does a lot of ironing and this in my opinion is the bench mark for all other Steam Generator irons.

Golden Review Award: 102 From Our UsersI think I'm in love . . .
I thought long and hard about buying this expensive bit of kit for a one-person household, but the 40 price reduction in March 2016 convinced me to risk it, thank goodness. I read all the reviews, but from the moment it arrived, my misgivings began to disappear. It isn’t over-large, it isn’t over-heavy. I’m an 82 year old woman with a heart condition, but I don’t have problems lifting it, and it fits beautifully on the upper shelf of a sort of half-width unit in my kitchen, (25cm wide, 32 cm high, 50 cm deep). It seems like sense to store it near the source of water, and I wouldn’t keep it high up. To those reviewers who say they don’t think their elderly mother could cope with it, think again — she might love it.

I also don’t at present feel the need for a new, expensive ironing board. The steam generator sits comfortably on the counter by the sink. My ironing board, bought because there is nowhere in my house to store a full-length board, folds over at both ends for storage and might also be described as a bit rickety; but it copes perfectly well with the Philips. It gets pretty damp by the end of an ironing session, but I leave it by a radiator for an hour or two before putting it away, and it dries out. I might buy an additional felt cover.

But the ironing experience! Like most reviewers, I’m not fond of ironing, and recent health problems had led to me reducing my ironing to a minimum. I started on a basket full of bone-dry domestic items such as table napkins and drying-up cloths. I had no trouble setting up the iron and using it. Creases disappeared at one sweep of the iron, and in no time the basket was empty. Then I went on to a heap of collared cotton jersey tops. Fairly soon I found that doubled cloth sections, such as the collars, really didn’t need to be ironed on both sides — they looked just as good after being pressed on the top side only.

The end result was a pile of laundry ironed in half the usual time, and looking very much better than it used to when I was using my old steam iron. To summarise the benefits of this marvellous contraption:
    1. Time taken halved, because of absence of faff.
    2. The sheer joy of absence of faff.
    3. Excellent quality of ironing.
By absence of faff, I mean everything that Philips and Amazon reviewers describe about the iron: only having to wait for it to heat up once, for two minutes; not having to refill the tank: not having to sort items at all, or think about temperatures; being able to put the iron down anywhere on the board (or the laundry) without risk of scorching; one sweep of the iron over the surface being enough, no ironing up and down or increasing the pressure by using one’s physical force. I was so pleased that next day I went through my wardrobe and picked out all the remaining badly-ironed items, and re-did them with the new iron — the first time in a long life that I have ever ironed for the fun of it. I must be in love.

    June 2019.
I’m 85 now, but still in love. To call an iron life-changing would be a bit OTT, but this one certainly makes a tiring chore much easier, and I continue to iron with a certain zest. Buy it for your mum or your granny, she’ll love it. Buy it for your wife – she’ll love you.
