Very useful add-on that would fit other brands of binocular too.
I like to visit my local parks and reserves and look at the wildlife. A recent Christmas present of a pair of 8×42 Vanguard bins has meant I’ve had a good excuse for getting out more for exercise and relaxation. They perform well but, as always with powerful optics, shake is a serious problem when observing something static over a long period. I wanted something that would attach the binoculars to a tripod but that didn’t weigh much or take up much room in my backpack. This product fits the bill. My binoculars model has a cap at the front that unscrews to reveal a standard-sized thread, designed for this adapter. All I need do is screw in the adapter with the long knob until it’s firmly fixed, then clip the base into the head of my tripod. Then I can enjoy a long session without too much vibration so that details of birds and insects are much clearer. Recently I had the thrill of staring at a Bittern in my local wetland reserve for over 30 minutes as it stood on the edge of a reed bank waiting for its prey. The adapter meant I had no strain from trying to hold the bins still for that length of time.
I notice that other makes of binoculars also have the front screw thread for an adapter, but at a much higher price than this one. The Vanguard model is simple and robust, as it really doesn’t need to be complicated for such a job. It looks like it would suit many different makes as long as they have a standard tripod thread, and save money. Highly recommended and I got a good saving by buying from Amazon.
I bought two!
I’ve found this adapter to be spot on. It works with my 15×70 Astro bins which are a porro prism design and with my roof prism 8×42 bins. Whilst many wouldn’t bother to mount smaller magnification bins onto a tripod, I can promise you a significant improvement in image resolution by removing the image destabilising device known as arms . It’s made of metal as opposed to some adapters being constructed of plastic. The latter tend to be wobbly which ruins the entire point of mounting your bins to a tripod. Always buy metal. Make certain you buy a decent non wobbly tripod as well, otherwise you may as stick with your image destabilising device.
Pricey, but worth i
Bought these as a replacement for the mount that comes in the box with the Celestron 15×70 binoculars. The reason was that the included mount is pretty flimsy, and when connected to a tripod the shake is pretty bad even caused just by slight wind.
Even though this Vanguard mount is pretty pricey, it is much more robust and solid, and even though you’ll still get some shake if you knock the tripod or binoculars, it recovers really quickly, and is much better to use. Would recommend.
Well engineered
Simple to attach to my Hawke Frontier ED X binoculars and, in turn, to a PU-70 Arca Swiss quick release plate for speedy fixing to my tripod or monopod. There’s a sufficiently small amount of movement when set up, allowing for any uneveness of the tripod’s position.
The adapter is lightweight, but made of metal and seems strong enough to last for a good while.
Perhaps my only reservation would be that it’s made in Myanmar (Burma), whose recent human-rights record is appalling.
Overpriced, but does what is intended
Fits to my endeavour HDs. Does what it’s designed to do though the thumb screw is needlessly large. I also think it’s overpriced considering the simplicity, it’s a shame there are no aftermarket alternatives.
Unobtrusive tripod adapte
This is a well made solid aluminium adapter. I bought this for my 18*100 binoculars for star gazing. The adapter is perfect and holds the binoculars well, even though these are bulky and heavy. It is easy to fit and easy to work with in the dark. The screw to the binoculars has a large grip, easy to feel in the dark.
Just need some better binoculars now..
Works Ok
Doesn’t quite rate 5 stars, but does its job reasonably well. When full tightened and mounted still allows slight “level” movement of binoculars to take account of out of position tripod. With larger binoculars the screw finger grip is fiddly to use and difficult to tighten fully. However it can be left permanently fixed to the binoculars if so desired without getting in the way of unmounted use.
