Excellent.
Combines several useful features in one device. It works very well for reading and writing optical media. Plug and play on Windows 10 and 11. I’d have preferred a plug in cable rather than a captive one.
I’m very pleased with this drive.
Handy plug-and-play external drive
This inaepeak 8 in 1 external drive was ordered in the absence of an optical drive on my new computer.
This compact sized unit has an integrated lead that is stored at the back. The lead is rather short (intended more for laptop use) and is not intended for use in the front PC ports meaning a USB extension needs to be used from the rear ports for it to be practical.
This drive was instantly recognised by my PC when plugged in and operation was smooth (if perhaps a little noisy).
I have yet to use all of the functionality due to time constraints, however the darker evenings will give me greater opportunities to check these out.
At the time of ordering, this was priced at 19.99 (with a further 5% off voucher available) making this great value for money.
Very Impressive CD/DVD Drive
I requested this as sorting out my shed I found an old box of CDs and we no longer have a CD player. My new computer also does not have an optical drive as I thought I had ripped all my CDs to digital years ago so did not request one.
This is a neat little unit, it was recognised instantly by my PC when plugged in. The lead is integral and stored in the back of the drive which is handy, but this drive is obviously designed for laptops as the lead is short and attached to my PCs front port left it dangling in mid air, not ideal. I had a USB extension cable around so I used that and now I can store it on top of the computer and pull it out and put it on my desk when I want to use it, sorted.
The other things I found extremely handy were the ports that this has which for me has bought it to another level. I found out I could rip a CD straight to my portable USB hard drive using the USB ports, which means I should be able to rip straight to my DAP, but not only that I could rip straight to an SD card using the SD port, well I never.
The drive performed faultlessly and the CDs I have ripped so far have had no problems. With the software I am using it starts ripping at 5X and gradually increases to about 10X which is good. I have also tested this with some DVDs and they worked perfectly as well.
Oh playing with it I found a small switch at the back and wondered what it does, so I flicked it across using a tooth pick and the LED lights on the top went off, not that they bothered me and they are now back on, but if they do, that’s how to turn them off.
In conclusion extremely happy with this drive, I really am impressed.
I hope you found this review helpful
Straight forward and an all in one
Inaepeak 8 in 1 External CD DVD Drive for Laptop, USB 3.0 Portable External CD Burner:
In a way, you could say that this product is ‘no frills’ considering how straight forward it is to start using but at the same time it comes with a lot of additional features than the average External DVD drive.
I am fine with how the product feels. I wouldn’t say it comes across as cheap from the materials used. To add to that the weight is what I would expect from a slim DVD drive.
I’m currently going through some old discs to decide what I want to do with them long term and so far this is reading them fine.
The additional USB and memory card ports are not required for my current home set up but there will come a time that I will have to take this drive with me somewhere and it would be good to have everything in one like this.
Brilliant for the price.
Considering this is just under 20 it’s simply brilliant, you’d expect to pay similar for just the CD/DVD read writer alone and then to have 4 additional USB slots (one being USB 3.0), a USB-C port as well as a TF and SD reader is mind boggling, especially as they do exactly what they are supposed to do.
The drive is powered by the single USB connection to your device, ultimately that restricts the use to low power demanding attachments such as a memory stick. However if your connected device has its own power source, then your good to go and it will also work just fine. I’m using mine with my laptop and its just brilliant.
highly recommended.
Easy to use
I got this because my small laptop doesn’t have a disc drive built in as so few do these days.
I have a windows surface and this was extremely easy to use, as you just plug it in and it worked straight away. I’ve got a free app for playing films already.
It feels a bit cheaply made but it works fine to play DVDs which is all I have needed it for so far. There’s no excessive noise and it doesn’t get hot or skip.
It comes with a built in cable with USB A and USB C connection which is very convenient. It just folds back into the body of the drive when not in use.
Overall I am very pleased with this.
Excellent Value & Works Fine - Very Useful
I ordered this to play and rip old DVDs. The USB Ports and Card Readers are a welcome bonus.
It’s come in handy with my desktop machine and will be especially useful with my Surface Pro, or a laptop, a lot of functionality from one port.
The build quality is fine, nothing amazing, but everything works fine and it has a lot of functionality for the money.
The instructions were just confusing, but it didn’t matter, it installed automatically under Windows 11 and I already have VLC Player, so everything just worked. It’s not region-free but most Computer DVD Drives aren’t, and you can work around that easily if you need to.
For me, DVDs played fine and the USB Ports and Card Readers worked without issue. I burned a recovery disc, since I still have some unused DVDRs, without any issue.
Only the blue USB A Port on the far right and the USB C Port on the far left are USB 3.0 5Gbps, the other three are only USB 2, but they’re still useful, and they provide a lot of useful functionality in one compact device.
The dual USB A/C connector cable is convenient, especially since it fits into a recess on the bottom of the drive, so you don’t lose it.
I’m sure lots of people won’t like the light-up ‘Optical Disc Driver’ feature. It changes between red, green, and blue continuously with no way to turn it off!
I figure I can use a piece of black tape if it gets too annoying, but the price and functionality are great, so it’s fine. It doesn’t show in my pictures, but it is quite bright.
It’s great to have on hand, I can finally get around to sorting my old DVDs, and it’s made a nice change to watch those instead of fiddling about with streaming services…
It’s a pity it won’t work with Tablets, it would add some great functionality to a cheap tablet. Maybe there’s a workaround, it looks like it might work with an OTG Cable/Adapter, then you could just use a File Explorer App and the VLC App. I didn’t test this, but it might be worth giving it a go.
I didn’t need the extra USB C power cable, since I was connecting it to a desktop machine that provides enough power, but I might need it with a portable device to provide extra power.
A Great Addition to my Laptop Bag
The External CD/DVD Drive for Laptop by Inaepeak is a solid addition to any setup needing a bit of optical media capability. This USB 3.0 portable drive is a doddle to use and makes burning and reading CDs and DVDs a breeze.
One of the standout features is its plug-and-play functionality. Simply connect it via USB, and it’s up and running without the need for extra software — a proper boon for those who aren’t tech-savvy. The drive is compact and lightweight, making it easy to tuck away when not in use, or to take along on your travels.
The speed of this burner is quite decent, and it handles various disc formats without a hitch. I particularly appreciate the sturdy build; it feels durable and not like it’ll fall apart after a few uses.
On the downside, it does tend to be a bit noisy during operation, which might be a bit off-putting if you’re working in a quiet environment. Also, it doesn’t come with a carrying case, so you’ll need to find your own way to keep it safe while on the move.
Overall, the Inaepeak External CD/DVD Drive offers great performance and portability for a very reasonable price. It’s a reliable choice, earning a solid four stars!
Everything You Need
Our new desktop computer doesn’t even have a space for a CD drive, USB is the only way forward for us now and this one works great.
A nice selection of ports on the back means even if it’s not used for CDs, it’s not just sitting there wasting space it’s stays useful. It probably means it’ll get used more, rather than putting in a box just in case you need to burn a CD or recover files.
A little disappointed the USB-C port on the back couldn’t act as the connection to the PC instead of the one under the drive. We’ve have to keep the drive on top of our PC case for the cable to reach.
Writes discs fine, reads previously written DVDs. Ours came region 2 (Europe) locked for movies (4 changes remaining).
There is a pulsating RGB ‘Optical Disc Driver’ on the top of the case that rotates through a few colours. This can be turned off with the very small switch at the back near the USB ports.
On the back it has what seem to be 3 USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0 port. All worked fine and only show up in Windows once plugged in.
Good but not in all situations
Great to have to relive the old days with cd’s and DVD’s or Games on PC that need the disk to run. The integrated USB3 hub and SD card readers are great for laptops with just 1 USB C port. Now the downside is on 2 of my laptops it complained about power issues and this was a problem as 1 only has a combo USB-C port for charging/data and display so there was no other way to give the laptop or the drive with the included DC cable extra power with out using a power bank. Otherwise the little LED and included case make for a good product that could be better without the USB power limits.
