Excellent streaming and monitoring camera 230fps with 10x zoom
Firstly, this is shipped in a tiny box that barely fits the camera, and leaves no room for proper protective packaging like bubblewrap. Basically there is just a thin foam sleeve between this and whatever it is dropped onto. This little box was then shipped inside a plain paper bag, again with no padding. This lack of protection for an item costing 176 is very concerning. Thankfully the camera itself seems to be very robust, and doesn’t seem to have been affected during postage. Hopefully the manufacturer will take note of this and improve it in the future.
This is being marketed as a high-bitrate streaming camera, and it does that job well. The sensor is 12 megapixels and can record at 4K 30fps and 1080p 230fps. Output is via USB 3.0. Other specific uses for such high-fps cameras are for Lightburn monitoring camera, and for golf-swing analysis. Higher framerates give better motion clarity for a given shutter speed. This is also useful for recording/monitoring industrial processes like machining or chemical reactions.
In good lighting the image is clear and noise is well controlled without losing much detail. It operates reasonably well in lowlight conditions where a normal camera would struggle with image noise. Indoors in daylight (from windows) it is average, but in limited light this is better than similar branded models I have tried. The visual noise is not intrusive even in stills, and video ‘fizzing’ is almost absent. Important details are kept clear without smearing all the detail away.
All the controls including zoom are manual, and you get up to 10x magnification. Although small these controls are easy to manipulate once you use it for a short time.
The build quality is excellent, metal where needed and it feels very solid. The lens is significantly better than your average webcam, with no distortion and no colour fringing. You get what you pay for in terms of optical quality.
As for pricing, this is currently 176 (or 158 with the current voucher). Given the very high specification (particularly 230fps 1080p), I think this price is justified, particularly for recording a vital process. The quality of the image is excellent, so it comes down to if it’s worth the cost to you personally. It seems a well built and reliable unit and obviously for professional use the price isn’t that important, as long as it does the job required.
Despite the lacklustre packaging protection this gets a solid five stars.
Specialist camera designed for niche applications
As a high-frame-rate recording device, the applications for this camera are inevitably going to be very specialised. You are likely to have specialist requirements as a result.
Things I liked:
+ Given the tiny size of the camera, the video quality is surprisingly good. It can indeed record at 1080p/230FPS while maintaining a clear image and good definition with no real noticeable noise.
+ You have a lot of control over the focal points of this lens. It involves manual focus and zoom, which gives you significant control over your final video.
+ When slowing 230 frames per second down to around 25%, you still get a very acceptable 60 frames per second (roughly) video, retaining the fidelity of the original video.
+ It’s totally plug-and-play. It does require USB 3.0 (as you would probably expect), but as it’s a UVC, it works very simply with OBS. This means capturing video is very straightforward. It also has MJPEG and YUY2 format support, so it’s as universally compatible as you would expect it to be.
+ Despite the small size and the very basic packaging, the unit itself is excellent. The build quality is good and performance is consistent and reliable.
Things I didn’t like:
– Not something that I don’t like, but something that’s definitely important to be aware of. It’s more of a scientific/industrial instrument rather than a user-friendly point-and-shoot camera. This means that you need to lock it into position and manually focus and zoom until you’re happy with the picture. Any changes to position, subject position, camera position, zoom or distance from subject will need manual recalibration of the image (i.e. refocusing).
Do I recommend it?
Yes, it is a very good quality unit. The price of 158 (after the voucher is applied) is high, but it is a specialist camera designed for niche applications. It’s very much not a point-and-click camera. But if your intended application involves a small camera recording at high frame rate with clear picture quality and loads of control over the zoom and focus, this has you covered.
Versatile camera for technical projects
This UVC camera is a good and versatile option for technical projects. It performs well in lower-light conditions, and the image quality improves noticeably when proper lighting is provided.
I tested it mainly with Linux, where it worked without any problems. As it is a UVC camera, setting it up was straightforward and I did not need to install any extra drivers.
The 5–50mm lens and 10x manual zoom provide plenty of flexibility. Both the zoom and focus need to be adjusted manually, so I would not choose it as my main camera for general streaming or video calls. However, it works very well as an additional camera for monitoring a 3D printer, recording electronics work or showing small technical details.
I also tested it briefly with some older code I had written for object and human recognition. For that particular use, it performed better than an older Logitech camera I had previously been using. The clearer details make it useful for the object-recognition project I am currently working on and I need specific details.
It is quite expensive, and many people will not benefit from its more specialised features. This is not really a standard webcam for someone who simply wants to stream or join video calls. It makes more sense for users who need a technical camera with a high frame rate, manual lens controls and good image detail.
For my purposes, it is a valuable piece of hardware and gives me more room to experiment with computer vision and other technical projects. That’s why it was worthy to get it!
Great for an IP Cam
I have several of these ELP cameras across different resolutions and price points, and they have all been completely reliable. I have this particular model connected up to a Raspberry Pi to turn it into a dedicated IP camera for my network, and the integration has worked brilliantly with zero connectivity or driver issues.
The standout feature of this hardware is the set of manual adjustments. Having physical ring controls for the aperture, zoom, and focus allows for incredibly precise fine-tuning, making it easy to capture a perfectly sharp picture and optimise the video quality for specific lighting and distance requirements. It feels robustly made, holds its adjustments well once set, and offers a fantastic, flexible solution for anyone looking to build a custom surveillance or monitoring setup.
Excellent Camera for Custom Projects
I needed a camera for a small imaging project and this one has been working flawlessly. The picture quality is sharp, the colors look natural even in lower light conditions, and the zoom lens gives a lot of flexibility when adjusting the setup. What impressed me most was how easy it was to get running. Connected it to a Windows system and it was recognized almost immediately without having to spend time searching for drivers. The dual HDMI and USB output is very useful and makes it easier to integrate into different workflows. After several weeks of use it has been reliable and consistent every time I turn it on.
Bonne qualit
Interesting camera
High frame rate on this is great, perfect for capturing smooth motion. Is definitely not a normal camera, and is for specialised usage only, but if you have a use case for it, this is great. It is plug and play, with a manual focus that can be adjusted with the help of a screw on the lens and turning the dial. There are also dials for aperture and zoom. It does seem to require things to be quite well lit, but other than that, few flaws in use.
Very good specialised camera, perfect for any weekend projects. A great option for hobbyists in need of a global shutter camera, as long as you know what you are doing. It is not a normal webcam, so don’t be expecting that. It is perfect on a Raspberry Pi, or any other hobby board.
Expensive webcam
I got this because of its versatility to use as a streaming webcam or for video production or for slow motion capture using the high frame rate settings.
Trying this out there were a few oddities, firstly with compressed MJPEG format I kept getting everything going green if I used a framerate other than the maximum 240fps, with any resolution. Interestingly the USB-C cable has a locking pin just like the ones you get on VGA or DVI video cables and so once I tightened it up the cable was sticking in straighter instead of sagging a bit. Then all was fine and I could select any resolution and framerate, where 4K ran smoothly enough but again an oddity is that HD resolutions appeared lacking contrast and clarity in comparison.
I’d still expect 1080 HD to look sharp and bright, it almost seems to me as if the camera was rather crudely downsizing the picture, so it seems better to use this always in 4K mode. Low level light and night use was acceptable, little of the sensor noise that my cheap webcam visually displays. The lens adjustments were pretty stiff at first but became a bit easier, though it is a chore to set things up right for different distances of focus.
But the real issue for me is that changing to YUYV uncompressed format caused the picture to freeze every time, only resuming when reverting to MJPEG. I tried with command line playback using ffplay and the standard v4l2 library and no matter how low I went with resolution or framerate it would always fail as “ioctl(VIDIOC_STREAMON): No space left on device”. A bit of searching seems to suggest this to be a known problem with this brand of camera devices. I tried a suggested fix but all that did was get me back to having a green picture again, this problem occurred in both Linux and Windows PCs.
However I then used a newer system, still USB 3.0 and it worked fine giving YUYV 4K 20fps video. So it seems that there may be compatibility issues or that this requires a higher performance system than my average desktop PC that’s getting on in years now.
Was man wissen sollte: Die Beleuchtung spielt eine wichtige Rolle.
Versatile industrial camera
Title: “ELP 12MP USB 3.0 Camera, 4K@30fps 1080P@230fps High Frame Rate UVC Camera with 5-50mm 10X Zoom Lens,Plug & Play for Industrial Applications,Surveillance and 3D Printing,Compatible with Windows Linux”
Review:
Setting this up was straightforward as the computer recognised it instantly. The zoom lens is quite heavy and requires a steady mount to keep it from drifting during use. Image quality is sharp when you spend the time to manually focus the rings properly. I found the high frame rate options very useful for checking fast machinery movements. It does get a bit warm after running for several hours in a row. The build quality feels sturdy and well suited for a busy workshop environment. This is a SERIOUS piece of kit for anyone needing precise visual feedback!
Sehr gute USB-Kamera fr detailreiche Nahaufnahme
Pluspunkte:
sehr gut fr Nahaufnahmen und Detailbilder geeignet
12 MP Auflsung
4K@30fps
hohe Bildrate bei niedrigeren Auflsungen
manuelles 5–50-mm-Zoomobjektiv
Fokus lsst sich gezielt einstellen
deutlich besser kontrollierbar als Autofokus-Kameras
ideal fr kleine Objekte, technische Details und Makroaufnahmen
Plug & Play ber USB
