eMarkable Paper Pure – 10.3” paper tablet

A digital notebook that may genuinely change how I develop ideas
I have been using the reMarkable Paper Pure for a couple of days, and my first observation is that it takes longer to understand than the beautifully minimal design might suggest. The initial setup was fairly straightforward, particularly using my Apple login, but this is not something you fully grasp in five minutes. There are helpful notes built into the device, although I made more progress by simply starting to write, exploring the menus and gradually discovering what fitted the way I work from templates to pen styles.

The writing experience is exceptional, because the surface has enough texture to avoid the slippery feeling of writing on glass, and the response is quick enough that the marks seem to appear directly beneath the pen. It feels remarkably close to using a good paper notebook, without leaving me with another pile of loose pages to organise later.

The handwriting recognition borders on miraculous. My handwriting legibility has declined massively over the decades, since I started doing everything on a computer, so it can be difficult even for me to understand once I start writing quickly, yet the conversion to typed text has been surprisingly accurate. It will not make every rushed scribble perfect, but it is already so much better than I expected.

What interests me most is how it may change my creative process. I work across web design, film and visual communication, and many ideas begin as rough shapes, fragments of copy or arrows connecting half-formed thoughts. I can now sketch out the structure of a website, clarify an idea before passing it into an app like Pinegrow, or start developing the treatment for a film project without immediately being pulled into the distractions of a computer.

That lack of distraction is probably the real point. It does not feel like a conventional tablet stripped of colour. It feels like a notebook with digital advantages added to it. Notes can be moved, organised into folders, tagged, converted to text and shared without breaking the original flow of thought.

The integrations are useful, including links with Outlook and Google calendars, but as somebody who primarily uses a Mac and iPhone, I would like to see deeper Apple integration. The reMarkable apps help bridge the gap, but the wider ecosystem currently feels more naturally connected to Google and Microsoft services. Perhaps that will improve over time.

It is also worth understanding that some of the more advanced cloud, search and sharing features sit behind the Connect subscription. The device remains useful without it, but buyers should look carefully at which features are included before deciding what the longer-term cost means to them. The value for money will depend on individual case usage.

The Paper Pure is light, comfortable to hold and large enough for proper notes and sketches without becoming awkward to carry. The Marker attaches magnetically to the side, although I would still use a suitable folio when travelling rather than trust it loose inside a bag.

This is not a replacement for my Mac, nor is it trying to be. It occupies the more valuable space between a paper notebook and the finished digital work. After only a couple of days, I can already see it becoming the place where projects begin.
