Yet another awesome set of radios from Retevis.
I will start by saying I have not used the radios yet as I am waiting on my licence before I can use them, which leads me on to say these ARE NOT PMR446 radios and as such will require a licence to use. They are perfectly legal for the uk according to the booklet and the Certificate of conformity that is available to view on the Retevis website.
Now, let’s move on to the review of the units themselves.
I cannot comment on range and battery life yet but given the size of the batteries and the power output (5w) of these radios they promise to have good range and battery life.
The radios and the charging unit are all fantastic quality, which I have come to believe Retevis products will be before I confidently order them. The materials used are rugged and the radios have a good stippled texture to them which makes me think they will be easy to keep hold of in the cold and rain.
These units do not have a screen but the controls are clearly marked and operation and set up is quite straight forward. Not to mention they are waterproof with an IP67 rating.
The charging unit is definitely a bulky beast! It charges all 6 radios at once and the clear leds make it very obvious which state of charge the radios are in. It does get warm, which is to be expected, so careful and responsible placement of the charger is advised and, as always, never leave any batteries charging unattended.
The antenna for the radio is removeable and, I assume, interchangeable with alternative antennas, this is something I plan to test once my licence comes through. It is slightly flexible and made from good quality materials.
I have no doubt that these will be great fun to use for adults and kids alike, with the correct licencing. They seem very straight forward and can be programmed to your frequencies but to do so you will need to buy a programming lead as one is not supplied.
All in all I am very impressed with the build quality, the ease of use and the functionality of these radios, especially for the price point, which makes me confident enough to say that I believe them to be excellent value for money for 6 radios with a charging station and programming lead!
