    Ottimo access poi

Incredible value WIFI 7 AP, but has inconsistent performance runs very ho
Note: I received this product as part of the Amazon Vine programme, in return for an honest and unbiased review. The opinions expressed below are my own and based on real-world use of the product.

I’ll preface this by saying this is insane value for a WIFI 7-capable access point at 79.99 (at time of review). All comments below are made with that in mind, and include comparison against multiple Ubiquiti U7 Pro Wall APs installed in the same environment. I am only covering the functionality that I’ve used – the AP has a lot more (especially within an existing Zyxel ecosystem).

In the box you get the AP, a power supply with interchangeable plug types, and a wall mount bracket. It doesn’t come with an ethernet cable, which is a minor omission but forgivable at this price.

The included wall bracket does not explicitly reference UK backboxes, but as shown in my included photo, the mounting alignment (AEF slots) fits standard UK single-gang backboxes perfectly.

The unit supports PoE, which makes installation cleaner if you already have cable runs in place. The power draw when using PoE fluctuates between roughly 9.5W and 15W depending on load, and the wired uplink successfully negotiates at 2.5GbE.

The AP can run either in standalone or Zyxel Nebula Cloud managed mode. The initial onboarding via the Nebula app (using the barcode on the rear of the unit) works flawlessly and is very straightforward. I do firmly believe though that even when using the barcode, the initialisation process should ask the user whether they want to actually register for the Nebula Cloud or use it standalone.

What was also not immediately clear is how restrictive the cloud mode can be. I was unable to find a way to switch into repeater mode within Nebula (this may exist, but it was not obvious), and so I wanted to switch back to standalone mode – and this is where a real issue came up.

After following the guidance – remove the device from the site and perform a factory reset – I still found it registered to Nebula when logging in to the device via the local interface (username and password on the back). Attempts to re-register and remove it again resulted in the same behaviour, with no devices appearing correctly in the cloud interface but still remaining registered after the reset.

The actual required sequence to fully clear it was:

    – Remove device from inventory

    – Delete the site

    – Delete the organisation

    – Factory reset the device

Only after this sequence does the initialisation show the standalone or Nebula mode choice screen. This process is not documented clearly, and ideally the system should warn or guide the user through it.

This resulted in over an hour of unnecessary troubleshooting, and to say I was close to just packing it up in frustration is a real understatement.

Once in standalone mode, the interface feels very basic compared to systems like Ubiquiti. It is functional, but lacks refinement. The use of profiles is fine, and does simplify some of the subsequent assignments.

Unfortunately, much to my disappointment, having finally got to a point where I could try to configure the AP as a repeater, I found that there is no obvious support for using it as a repeater with non-Zyxel access points. Again, there may well be a way to do this, but if there is, it is not presented in an easily discoverable, friendly manner.

To change direction, I decided to try to use it – wired to a USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE switch – as a 6Ghz AP for a gaming PC directly up above its location. Initial testing showed pretty poor results, with speeds around 400Mbps down and 30Mbps up, despite no network throttling (either on the Zyxel or Ubiquiti sides) and a 1.6Gbps supporting internet connection.

I decided to perform a more controlled test the following day in a room with direct line of sight to a Ubiquiti U7 Pro Wall AP for comparison.

    On 320MHz channel width:

    – The Zyxel averaged about 1000Mbps down and 30Mbps up

    – The Ubiquiti U7 Pro Wall averaged about 1425Mbps down, 100Mbps up

Switching the Zyxel down to 160Mhz channel width, the Zyxel averaged about 800Mbps down.

Needless to say, these figures were well down on my expectations for a WIFI 7 device. I’m not sure if the unit has thermal issues preventing reaching higher speeds, but during testing it ran very hot the touch; not warm, the type of heat that is uncomfortable to keep your finger on for a prolonged period of time.

This is still a pretty decent product for the price. At roughly half the cost of a U7 Pro Wall, it delivers a big chunk of the performance, albeit somewhat inconsistently, and would be more than adequate for typical home users.

The thermal behaviour does raise concerns for me though, and whilst the Nebula-first setup is likely fine for most users, the fact the system does not (at a minimum) clearly warn users before locking them into a state that requires a full multi-step reset process to undo isn’t forgivable at any price point.

It is a 4* based purely on value, with the caveat that you are unlikely to achieve top-tier WIFI 7 speeds even under ideal conditions.

Works well, compact and easy to setup without a controller.
Arrived as described, as pictured, safe and sound. For a compact access point I was impressed with how this performed signal wise in a home environment across all three bands though as far as I can tell, you cannot use all three bands concurrently, its 2.4G plus either 5G or 6G – its still pretty decent value wise.

Build quality wise it’s entirely fine, it’s white as expected and comes with a removable mounting plate for easy installation and removal. As far as I can tell it’s entirely made from plastic though it has a reassuring amount of weight to it. In the box you get a standard 12v power supply but the unit is POE supported and I suspect most people will be powering this via POE rather than the supplied power adapter.

Setup wise, out of the box it’s configured to work as soon as it’s powered and given an IP address and its default SSID’s are password protected so you don’t have to worry about having an open WiFi network on your premises while you configure. Quick setup is easy enough through a browser, you don’t need a controller or cloud account to use this. You get the normal selection of settings and customisation options in the advanced settings though I would not recommend this for a novice, its quite in-depth and goes way beyond what you would find on a normal consumer wireless router or access point.

One thing to note though, I had trouble accessing the AP through a browser, it kept blocking the setup page on security grounds though Mozilla eventually let me through and it seems fine now that the time and date is set correctly.

Take note, a POE injector is not supplied, just a normal mains power adapter — the specs and listing are a little ambiguous when it comes to what’s included in the box.

    Highly recommended.

    Zyxel WiFi 7 access point.
WiFi 7 is super, multiple SSIDs (up to 9) available, great range, smart mesh, has just about everything. Can be installed as part of Zyxel Nebula or standalone. All in all, a great piece of kit, but probably overkill for home use.

Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersZyxel BE6500 Access Poi
NWA50BE PRO – Searched for a long time for a Wireless Access Point that let me map SSID’s to VLANs to segment my network. For a very modest price compared to other vendors, the BE6500 does this and more.

After unboxing, I was up and running in literally 5 minutes. I do work in I.T but the instructions are idiot proof, with multiple ways (Wifi, Ethernet) of connecting to the access point to setup the device.

I wasn’t necessarily looking for an access point to improve any black spots in my house; however, it’s the only device (I’ve tried many) where the signal penetrates my integral garage that I work out of. Yes, there are probably Access Points and Routers that can do this, but they cost 2-3x as much.

Due to the signal strength (turn off low power mode in the menu for better results), the stability and speed of my connection is so much better than before. Not had the device long enough to comment on reliability.

My setup – Pfsense router, TP-Link managed switch, ISP router used as an Access point, Zyxel BE6500 WAP.

Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersHi end WiFi for peanuts pricing
    Pricing:

The NWA50BE Pro is 81 right now, just three quid more than the basic model, and honestly, why wouldn’t you get it? That tiny price bump buys you a better heatsink (metal vs plastic) so it runs cooler and theoretically faster speeds (hence it has the different BE number in the title).

    Band Flex:

When flying cars arrive and everyone’s on 6GHz, you can flip the 5GHz band over to 6GHz. You can’t run both, but if end up switching t your high end devices to 6Ghz this will stay relevant that little bit longer. This is one of the compromises of getting this dual band version compared to a dedicated tri band WiFi 7 access point. But remember they cost over 100 right now for theoretically faster speeds – and most people don’t have devices that can make use of it.

Meanwhile, the trusty 2.4GHz stays alive for all the IoT relics no matter what setting you put it inAlexas, cameras, smart plugs.

    Nebula Cloud:

The Nebula system is excellent. It syncs across access points and even plays nice with other brands, I’m running it alongside an ASUS router. The control is great:

    * per- SSID speed limits

    * Client steering to the best frequency

    * Signal quality settings and automation

    * Defaults for people who don’t want to tinker

Loads more stuff I haven’t even touched on.

Basically, it’s a buffet of options for nerds, with a “just works” button for everyone else.

    Pros:

    * Metal heatsink = cooler, longer life

    * Band flex for future 6GHz adoption

    * Nebula cloud is powerful and crossbrand friendly

    * Price is absurdly low for what you get

    Cons:

    * None that matter to me. Zyxel name isn’t so famous (and lots of hatred for anything Chinese on Reddit) but if you do some research they’re a solid company with over thirty years of history and experience making millions of network devices. They probably make your no name / white label ISP router and have just done a major deal with UK fibre networks so they can’t be as terrible as every Ubiquiti owner would have you believe.

5/5 from me – feels like a cheat code. WiFi 7 performance for WiFi 6 pricing. Let all the sheep buy the expensive and pretty big brand names. I’ll happily pay half the price for better performance.

Wifi7 access points almost at a price of wifi6. Got two, they work nice. I will try to write more once nebula sub runs out and I switch to managing them without it.
