To be fair, a lot of budget thermal gear promises the earth and delivers a blurry, pixelated mess that leaves you guessing whether you’re looking at a rabbit or a warm rock. The Pixfra Nova PFI-N22 actually breaks that trend. Weighing in at just 266g, it genuinely earns the “pocket-size” label, feeling more like a chunky monocular than a piece of delicate tactical tech. It slips easily into a jacket pocket or the side pouch of a backpack without weighing you down, and the tactile, rubberised body feels rugged enough to take a few knocks.
We put this straight to work on a high-stakes, real-world task: tracking down a lost cat in our local area.
The buttons on top have a distinct, solid click, which is crucial when you are stumbling around in the pitch black trying to adjust settings by feel alone. Boot-up time is impressive; it springs to life in just a few seconds, letting you scan hedges, undergrowth, and tree lines immediately. The 256192 sensor might sound modest on paper compared to top-tier military spec units, but combined with their PIPS 2.0 processing, it provides surprisingly crisp heat signatures.
Instead of just blobs, you can clearly differentiate shapes. When scanning dark garden borders and thick brush, the “White Hot” and “Black Hot” modes made a shivering feline stand out like a beacon against the cold ground, bypassing the camouflage that would foil a standard torch. The 10mm lens gives you a wider field of view, which is exactly what you want for scanning large areas quickly, rather than being zoomed into a tiny patch of dirt.
It is functional, but unrefined in a couple of areas. The digital zoom gets pixelated very quickly past 2x, basically, treat it as a fixed-magnification scanner for best results. The companion app can also be a bit fiddly to connect via Wi-Fi when you’re out in the field and just want to offload a quick image.
The Little Thing: The lens cap hangs by a small rubber tether that is far too easy to snag on twigs when you’re pushing through thick undergrowth. It hasn’t snapped yet, but it’s a minor annoyance when you are trying to be stealthy.
The Verdict
This is an exceptional tool for wildlife spotters, security-minded homeowners, or anyone doing late-night search and rescue for runaway pets. If you need to identify specific deer species at a distance of half a kilometre, you will walk away disappointed and need to spend triple the money. But for scanning up to 150-200 metres out to instantly locate heat sources in the dark, this punches well above its price tag.
I have been using this for wildlife spotting and general outdoor use and it is amazing how much technology has been packed into something this small. It easily fits into a pocket and at only 266g it is light enough to carry around for long periods without noticing it.
The thermal image quality is surprisingly good for a compact device. It picks up animals and heat sources clearly and the detection range is impressive for something with such a small 10mm lens. The different colour palettes and picture modes are useful depending on the environment and what I am looking for.
The build quality feels excellent and the IP67 weather resistance gives confidence using it outside in different conditions. The controls are straightforward and it does not take long to learn the menus or adjust settings.
Battery life has also been very good, allowing me to use it for extended walks and evening sessions without constantly worrying about charging.
It is obviously not going to match the image detail of much more expensive professional thermal optics, but considering the size, performance and price point it is incredibly impressive.
Overall it is a brilliant compact thermal monocular that delivers a lot of capability in a genuinely pocket sized device.
