Google Nest Protect – Smoke Alarm And Carbon Monoxide Detector (Wired)
The smoke alarm that others look up to.
Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a split-spectrum smoke sensor to detect both fast- and slow-burning fires. It can send an alert to your phone,[1] speak to you and even light the way in the dark.
It tells you what the danger is and where it is.
The Split-Spectrum Sensor looks for both fast- and slow-burning fires. It also has a 10-year CO sensor so that it can tell you where poisonous, invisible CO is hiding. And all your Nest Protects speak up at the same time to tell you what’s wrong and where the problem is.
-
Easy to install.
Nest Protect only takes minutes to set up with your iOS or Android device. Once you’ve added each of your Nest Protects to your Nest account, they will automatically connect to each other.
-
Thoughtful, not annoying.
Nest Protect checks itself over 400 times a day and lets you know if something is wrong. It also has Steam Check, so a nice, relaxing shower shouldn’t cause your alarm to shout at you.
-
You’ll know, from anywhere.1
Nest Protect can alert your phone when something is wrong at home. You’ll receive a message if the alarm goes off, if the batteries start to run low or if a sensor isn’t working.
1 Mobile alerts require working Internet and Wi-Fi.

Self install in under 5 minutes
Was worried about getting one with a short expiration date, but received a unit less than 3 months old.
Install was easy and everything was provided in the box, just a case of removing the old unit, putting the wires in the junction blocks (included) and screwing to the ceiling.
Fantastic purchase and I will be ordering more to replace the other detectors in the house.
excellent protectio
Bought these to replace 1st generation protect that had done there ten years. easy to install especially as the old ones were already wired in and easy to set up on the app. Delivery was fast as usual and looking over the old reviews i can say that the problem of old stock no longer exists as mine were built january this year so full warranty for the ten years given. Great peace of mind and all though expensive in comparison to other alarms definitely worth the money
Excellent product if a bit pricy
This is a very impressive product.
Easy to install, with a bit of confidence in electrical work, although I didn’t use the supplied electrical connectors as they just were not secure enough for me, hence the 4 stars in that regard. Set up is easy with Nest and the reporting is very interesting.
The night light function is also very useful, no need to put on main lights when I get up in the night to check on the restraints of the hostages. Peace of mind all round!
The best smoke alarm you can buy (for 10x the price of a smoke alarm)
Its exactly what you would expect for a 100 smoke alarm.
The peace of mind is nice when you are out as it alerts your phone if it detects anything, the green light is also nice when you turn the lights off to let you know its working (however this does get triggered by the TV on occasion), Another “feature” I love is that it doesn’t have an annoying flashing light on it at night.
If you want to put one of these in every room of your house you’re going to have to mortgage it first, but if you can afford to do that, they are pretty good smoke alarms.
A smart little safety device
Granted this is an expensive option in home safety devices but the additional features the nest protect provides made this a worthwhile purchase for me. Setting up the device via the app was straightforward and seamless. Ceiling installation then took 5 minutes, job done. The sensor activated night light is a great feature when moving around in the dark, just enough light to illuminate the immediate area. Another handy feature is that the nest performs it’s own self tests automatically so no more running about manually testing alarms (that is when I actually remember to do so).
The nest I purchased only has 9 years left until it reaches it’s expiry date (not the full 10yrs) but when taking into account that the price I paid was at least 25% cheaper than other retail outlets I’m still coming out ahead.
All in all a great product, if it was half the price I’d but twice as many.
Long, 9+ year expiry date from Amazo
I bought 4 of these from Amazon. Was a bit nervous on the expiry dates after reading some reviews, but they all came with more than 9 years until expiry, which is fine by me. I’d definitely recommend checking (and unfortunately you can’t check without opening the box), but it wasn’t a problem for me!
I had Google Nest Protect in my previous house, and wanted them again in the new place. They’re definitely worth the investment. Very easy to set up, and they all connect to each other without wiring (they just need WiFi). This means that if one of them detects a fire, they all sound, so you’re woken even if the fire is at the other end of the house. They also ‘talk’ to give meaningful information, (ie “there is smoke detected in the hallway”), rather than just beeping, which means it’s a lot easier to react to the alarm appropriately!
A safety upgrade that’s well worth it!

Expensive but worth i
Bought these as a replacement to my 1st Generation Nest Protects which had just expired.
Compared to the old ones, these are slightly smaller and more sleek. Unlike the previous revision their mounting allows for more error if you’re looking for that perfect square placement and all four sides are exactly the same.
The 10yr expiry compared to the 7yrs of the 1st gen is also a welcome improvement.
I had one small issue trying to set them on a new wifi after I changed my Internet provider but that was quickly overcome by taking them down and re-registering them: lesson learnt, take a photo of their rear stickers and keep safe before installing on the ceiling ti avoid having to take them down!
Yes they’re expensive but I feel the price is justified when I know everyone at home is safe. If you also have a Nest Thermostat, they can be set to automatically switch your boiler off if they detect CO2.

House Protection You Need
This is the second Nest Protect product I’ve installed in my own home.
I’m pleased to say the original life has doubled from 5 years to 10.
It’s a little fiddly to set up especially because the mounting/fixing positions are different in the new device to that previous.
Also I had some minor issues in linking the device to my home network and iPhone. It took 2 or 3 attempts.
This Nest Protect provides a warning for fire, heat, smoke and carbon monoxide. It also provides a pleasant warning voice and a movement sensitive light.
It’s a lot more expensive than a basic smoke and carbon monoxide warning device but the longevity and extra features makes it a worthwhile purchase IMO.

Excella
They are very sensitive which is good when your life could be at risk
Great replacement for traditional alarms
Great replacement for traditional alarms ! Easy to install and setup apart from two minor issues – a) there is no room for wires at the back so the wires have to be pushed into ceilings. b) the cable clips are too easy to let the cables in and out so I still prefer screws.
The night light is a great value add on!
Great Product but Google Taking the P@@@
Bought to replace my out of date Gen 1 model which had been in operation for the past 7 years (original models had a 7 year life) with absolutely no issues. On receipt I checked manufacturing dates (on back of unit – it should be on the box!) and I’m pleased to report it was made in Jun 2021 so I should have 10 years(ish) use from this one. All good so far – now the p@@@ taking by Google! They have changed the back fitting plate – WHY!!!! It meant I had to remove the old plate, fill in the old holes, drill new ones, touch up paint the mounting area, wait for the paint to dry and fit the new back plate. But wait there’s more! They have also changed the connector/plug to the unit – again WHY!! I had to cut the old one off and fit the new one. What should have been a literal 5 minute job (setup aside) turned in to an hour of effing and jeffing! I’m from an engineering background and can no reason to change those two things other than to alienate customers.
Rant over – the Nest Protect is a great piece of kit, well made, easy to set up, highly functional and integrates well with my existing NEST products and other smart devices. However, I’m considering upgrading my NEST thermostat and if they’ve changed the mounting/wiring etc, they can take a flying you know what. I was angry when they ditched the ChromeCast Audio device so they could make more money selling their crappy mini’s so that will be the last straw – sorry still ranting…..
Abit tricky but works well
The Google connect works well and still going strong.
Issues: the device just wouldn’t register at first wifi wise with my account had to ring Google support and they were super helpful. If you have other nest products it helps having them near by ad the mesh system helps register the product with all your settings.
The Good: once set up the system is super easy and does regular working checks to ensure its operational. It also detects motion etc. I’ve not been able to find the night light useful as I don’t think it’s strong enough but I didn’t buy it for that reason. I can see all the status from my phone and I’ve had it for like over a month and all is still well.

A great product with some small annoyances.
I “invested” in the first generation of Nest protect products which are now starting to reach their end of life dates. This is annoying because I am now faced with a bill for 000’s to replace them all but when it comes to safety, you just have to see the bigger picture and suck up the cost, taken over the lifetime of the product it is not so bad. Annoying then that the second generation products that I have bought so far were already 6 months into their 10 year life span but I think that is probably fairly normal.
If you are replacing a Gen 1, you will need to change both the wiring (different plug for the mains version) and the mounting plate, quite why Nest could not have kept the plug the same I do not know, possibly because the old one is a pain to release but it is not something that you should be doing very often. As always though, all of the fixings that you need to complete the job are included.
Once you have done all of this though, set-up via the app is very straightforward and I had the replacement up and running in a few minutes. If you are replacing/upgrading, probably best to delete the old product from the app first to avoid any naming issues.
I still think that these are the best on the market and I have always found that the customer service from Google Nest to be excellent.
Great Alarms, but two years missing from operating life
These alarms are great – they look good, install really easily, they’re loud and the spoken commands and warnings are much better than traditional alarms. Obviously knowing there may be a problem while you’re away from home is also really useful, especially if you have a pet at home.
The only drawback from buying them through Amazon is that they’re already two-years old. The alarms will only work for 10 years and mine all arrived with 8 years remaining. I guess they’ve been sat on a shelf somewhere.

Best looking alarm on the market.
Easy to set up with clear instrucitons.
Smart features are fantastic such as the night light.
CO detection gives extra piece of mind.
They are on the pricey side though.
Recommend wired alarm
Wired alarm lasts up to 10 years. Product itself is great with a multipurpose smoke alarm and CO alarm.
When testing its features, the Nest app tells you details of when the alarm is active, when it’s been silenced and when the levels of smoke etc decreases and if issues persists will phone an emergency number that you choose.
Only issue is that the alarms cannot be displayed on the hub unless you previously had a Nest account as you’re unable to log into nest through the Google Home app.
Great device but check the expiry date before installing
There are many reviews saying that devices have been received with much less than the expected 10 year lifespan remaining. I checked with Amazon CS first and was assured that I would receive freshly made products. I went ahead and ordered 3. They arrived today and to my relief, all three had been manufactured in the last few months. Perfect!
They are easy to install and set up in the NEST app. They connect to each other and the WiFi easily and if one is triggered all devices alarm and report which device triggered the alarm.
They are far and away the best Smoke and Carbon Monoxide sensors available right now.
Very happy with the NEST ecosystem including the thermostats etc. They are a little on the pricy side but you do get quality for your money.

Smoke detector with Google voice and that's about it!
Great product from Nest. If you have a preexisting wired installtion note the NC link is missing from the terminal block. The WiFi setup is a bit annoying, since the MAC address wasn’t on the box or on the label on the device. Still no support on the Google home app which is hard to believe! No other sensors in device such as temp humidity to feedback into the thermostat, or any air quality metrics which was very disappointing. Expensive for what it is; a wifi enabled smoke detector but if you have bought into the Google ecosystem then this product is great addition although missing a few critical features that would have truly made it smart.
Bulky wiring makes it hard to fit - Wished I had purchased battery versio
Purchased 3 of these to replace the ancient hard wired alarms in my new house.
I am not a DIY guru but found the instructions quite easy. The issue though is the unit is quite slim and the terminals add a lot of bulk to the wiring for me it will not fit. I am going to have to cut a larger hole in the ceiling to make it fit.
Also given the shelf life I am starting think the battery model would have been good enough and much easier!

Great functionality and a sleek alarm
Really easy to install – 20 mins from unboxing to fully installed.
Clear instructions for set up and installation. I’m no electrician, but the step by step guide had me installing three of these around the house.
Great functionality and looks smart too.
Cool feature of a white light that comes on when you walk by the alarm in darkness.
Easy to fi
The negative reviews I think had problems.
They were easy to install. The wiring diagrams were easy to follow.
The date on the delivered ones was 9.5 years time, so not old stock as some said.
2 installed in an hour, most of the time sorting old wiring.
Fantastic safety CO2 and smoke smart alarm
This was to replace a gen 1 Protect which has worked perfectly for 7 years and needed replacing due to sensor life the gen 2 have a 10 year sensor life. Easy to exchange and remove the old from the app and add the new one. I have 4 Nest Protect sensors and they all interact, all battery models highly recommended.
Great.
I ordered a battery powered version from Amazon. It arrived in correct box but was a wired version in the box with no wires. Had to return for a refund. 1 star for that. I already have 2 of these in my flat, 1 wired and one battery powered. They are both interconnected which is great. The nest app is great for status updates, testing and cancelling false alarms. If there is a problem in your home you’ll get an alert to your phone. They stay interconnected even if your WiFi is down, you just won’t get alerts to your phone. Recommended.

Not easy to fit on ceiling
It was a replacement for one which has carbon oxide alert on it so needs renewing every few years. It was on the ceiling and the fitting plate was a different shape to the original one which meant that new holes had to be drilled for the screws and rawl plugs inserted. This was not necessary. The shape of the Next protect was the same so why couldn’t the plate be the same. I had to either climb up to reach it and drill the holes etc or, as I am 85 I decided that this was not a good idea so had to get someone else to fix it. I now have 4 holes in the ceiling which need filling. Poor design. Not thought ou

Premium Produc
This is a premium product from the moment you open the box. Even the supplied self tapping plasterboard screws are the best you will have ever seen. Very easy to install if you already have mains smoke alarms, and they look great once installed.
Easy to install and setup
These are a great device. They’re so good we bought two! Installation was simple. Just two wires to connect and a simple bracket to screw up to hold it. They work well too! They test themselves automatically and can be set and controlled via an app on your phone. As an added bonus they detect motion and glow as you pass, meaning they act as a great temporary night light if you wake up in the dark and need to head downstairs for a glass of water or similar. We have two and they connect together and talk to each other via the app and wireless network. I’m actually tempted to get the Nest doorbell too! These are a great product. I admit though, yes they are a bit pricey.

3rd one I ow
I have an office at the end of the garden wanted to get a fire alarm that would sound in the rest of the house or notify me, if there was a fire. Nest does this nicely.
The others I have in the house are great, do like the night light that comes on if you move about.
Quite sensitive to lots of dust from building work. Sanding dust can trigger the alarm, you do get a warning saying there is smoke in the house.
Perfect always wanted these
Very easy to setup and install. Everything you need is included – all you need to do is download the app, create an account and link the smoke detectors to the account you have just created. They talk to each other if smoke is detected. The pathway lightening brightness can be changed on the app for each unit. It’s a big shame it’s not Alexa compatible. The sound/voice on the units are nice/clear and loud.
The units are possibly old stock as you don’t get the full 10 years lifetime on the product. Mine was short by 14+ months

very good
Great product easy to install, don’t know about battery life as only had few weeks
When I say fabulous, one of our main concerns when leaving the house unattended is that the cats could be trapped inside when there is a fire. With these alarms (we have three fitted inside the house and a fourth in the garage), we have a linked system that is hard wired in and with a battery back up that will alert us if smoke is detected in the house. The system undertakes regular sound checks to ensure the alarms still work and it is reassuring to see a full history of each alarm in the Nest app. Should there ever be a fire when I am not in the house, I can contact a key-holding neighbour that can rescue my cats or at least call the fire brigade. Of course, these also alert to the threat posed by Carbon Monoxide and with an alarm as loud as these, you are unlikely to sleep through the alert (as long as you have enough in your home; don’t stint on safety).
Couple of things to observe when you're replacing / upgrading the G1 version...
I bought three Generation 1 Nest Protect (Wired) Smoke Alarms around 5 years ago to replace the basic-but-linked ones we had. They worked really well… until last weekend when one of them announced (in the middle of the night! Like, why!?) that its CO sensor had failed and that I should replace it immediately (and then continued to beep every so often afterwards). Literally, the following evening, another announced that it had ‘expired’ and that it too should be replaced. So… as we’d been fairly pleased with their general burnt toast / bacon fat / wafting BBQ fume reporting… and that they also functionally tie in with the Nest Thermostat that we also have (and by the way, we’re on our fourth as apparently – warranty replaced units aside – they don’t seem to last much beyond five years either), I ordered three wired 2nd Generation versions to replace them.
Couple of things to observe when you’re replacing / upgrading the G1 version:- Despite the very similar appearance of the G1 and G2 Nest Protect devices, the baseplates are completely different… so the devices aren’t interchangeable with them. And none of the existing holes line up… so be prepared to get the drill out as you’ll be re-fixing everything. And the mains connector is also not compatible, however they do supply neat terminal blocks to make changing the cable connector over fairly easy (please remember to isolate the circuit your smoke alarms are on when installing!).
Once you’re past that and they’re up and running, they pretty much look and function in exactly the same way as the the previous versions… with the only exception (that I’ve noticed) that you can silence a triggered alert from your mobile device… oh, and that the CO sensor should last ten years this time… instead of the five’ish I got from the last one.
Value or Not?
We have 3 smoke alarms in our home (hard wired). One started bleeping the other week, I took it down thinking it was the battery, then saw the replacement date on the underside. 2016. I never even knew there was a 10 year life span on smoke alarms! We bought this house as a new build, and were never told this. Anyway, do we buy the same again (18 each on Amazon) or go for the nest type. We went for the nest for a few reasons. They have a CO2 alarm too, (our house didn’t have one), they have a nightlight, they constantly check themselves.
If you added these together, smoke alarm 20, CO2 alarm 20, nightlight 20, the nest isn’t too far off the mark price wise. I still reckon they are 15-20 too dear, but we decided to go for 3x nest units.
They were easy to install, as the wiring was already there, it was just a case of putting the nest connectors on, then on the ceiling they go. The app is straightforward.
The best thing about them…The nightlight. Very handy. Can spot you on the landing/hallway very easily. When it comes on and goes off it does it gradually so doesn’t wake up the rest of the house. Can be changed in the settings, ON,OFF, etc, brightness.
The wired units also have a tiny green LED on them which shows there is power going to them. When you turn the lights off at night to go to bed, the unit glows green for a couple of seconds to tell you its OK.
It’s a shame they are so dear especially when you need 3, but breaking the price down over 10 years its not all that bad.
Ours came with manufacture dates of september 2020, and 1 had December 2019. I really don’t think it will make any difference as they have been boxed and sealed all this time. I just labelled them all up as fitted in Feb 2021, replace 2031.
TBH, our old ones were 5 years out of date, and I noticed they were manufactured in 2006, and our house wasn’t built then! So, builders don’t care. I guess they were in a container with all the other house fittings. If it hadn’t been for the old unit bleeping I would have never looked, When we bought the house I looked at them and thought ‘brilliant, hard wired smoke detectors, i’ll never have to look at them again’.
Can’t be topped
Bought to replace 3 that had reached their expiry date (sorry but they don’t last forever). Good life on batteries but seems only if you use Energizer Ultimate Lithium (as supplied). Easy to replace each alarm in turn by deleting the old one from the app and then adding the new one using same ‘name'(eg kitchen). ‘Path light’ function is great for night time “visits” as saves switching main lights on waking the whole household.
Will buy again in 10 years time or an improved model if available.
Safety at a cos
Really like these smart detectors. A note to be aware of. They are factory set to have a 10 year service life. On the rear of the unit it has manufacture date and replace by date. So if its old stock the service life will be shorter. When they reach the end date the unit constantly chirps and then take out the batteries and despose of said items. I have had a few from other sellers that had 2016 and 2017 manufacture date clearly old stock and were returned.

Highly recommended produc
Brilliant product. I have 4 of them now. The night light feature is a welcome bonus. They are loud and the smart testing and notification feature makes sure you’re never without a working battery. They looks great when compared to yellowed old ones!
Nice advance warning of smoke-tested this weekend and works very well!
Very easy to use, only issue I had was installation which could be somewhat challenging depending on how the previous alarm is installed. In our case, there was no recess in the ceiling, and the old alarm was connected to a junction box which provided ample room. I had to cut through a lot of plaster to get more for the wire protruding from the back of the unit (and some room required to be able to move to twist the alarm on the mount). This weekend we had a small mishap in the kitchen, burning some food in the oven — smoke detector warned us of the presence of smoke, triggering all 3 google protects (2 wired, 1 battery operated in the attic). Was able to easily silence the alarm from my phone. Also let us know when smoke levels were clearing/decreasing.
Expensive but good home gadge
Good product. Item is a little on the expensive side hence why it gets 4 stars rather that 5.
Sensor death dates not given at time of purchase
These were replacements for previous Nest devices that were dying. So note that it seems that the 9 year or so lives are related to manufacturing, not activation dates. So these two – ordered and installed together – have death dates 6 months apart (in 2029). Amazon should sell these with death dates given at time of order. To find the death date look at the technical info for each devices in the app. Otherwise fine – though the incompatibility of mounting plates and screw holes is tedious!

Piece of mind when up and running
Bought 3 units to replace 3 original wired non-smart smoke detectors (cheaper to buy 3 singles instead of the 3-pack!). Units received were all the same except manufacture date meaning 1 has a 10 year life cycle left, other 2 around 9 years (disadvantage to buying from Amazon unfortunately). I’m by no means familiar with wiring / installation and it took a while to get these wired by recycling previous wiring for original units (not a Protect issue but I blame builder / original electrician for being over keen on those plastic wiring blocks and small holes in roof space!). Once setup at my desk eventually installed in the ceiling there were no real issues. One unit dropped off the wifi and took quite a few efforts to reconnect, requiring me to resort to resetting it and approx and hour rejoining). The design of the round plate connecting to the ceiling and the circle alarm is very fiddly when trying to attach ceiling too.
Expensive high technology
I like this product because it is integrated with the Google family and allow interconnection with app and other devices. The very negative is that is very expensive for a very basic work, where you rarely interact (fortunately) with it. In its main functions, it works properly. Its interconnectivity and smart features are great but only used during installation and testing. I like the feature of the light that turns on when you walk at night close to it.

Great!
Very happy with these, they communicate well with each other and my husband and I love the light up feature at night! Theres just enough light to see where youre going in the middle of the night (for loo trips) without it being bright enough to fully wake you up
Love the nightligh
Well, in general it’s just a smoke and CO2 alarm and until the house burns down I’m not going to know how well it works. Still, I appreciate that I can check the batteries on the phone. The best thing though is the nightlight. Since there’s one in the upstairs landing and one in the downstairs hallway, I no longer worry about falling down the stairs in the middle of the night. Just enough light but not too much.
Bit pricey but worth it!
Decided to buy a smart smoke detector after we had a garage fire. These work a treat and I ended up buying 3 in the end. They all talk to one another so if one Nest detects smoke in a remote room, it’ll notify you on all the Nests you may have. Best of all is having the phone notifications!
Does what it says, but do check the age of product on delivery.
First foray into the smart home world of smoke detectors.
Wiring instructions and connectors supplied make this a relatively easy ish (if very fiddly) installation. Hardest part for me seemed to be getting the alarm to sit on the backing plate.
Worth checking the area where previous smoke alarm was for fit especially any wiring box and areas not painted that won’t be covered when you fit the nest alarm – avoids taking it down again.
You need apparently a google home account which then directs you to a nest app download, the two appearing not to link to each other – but the nest app works okay.
Fun for a few hours of annoying the family with the test function.
Night light does work okay if you boost your highest value – only works when no other light source impacting the sensors the alarm must use for this ( based on my testing) anyway.
Alarm happily tests itself regularly and you can see that on the app so great comfort.
Another on order to add to the alarm family.
Worst point, advertised 10 year life of product, already a year old when it arrived from Amazon – sept 2020.
Overall another great Nest produc
I bought two Nest Protect to replace my precious wired smoke alarm. Setting both up using the nest app was simple and easy to do. As yet, not integrated with the Google Home app but that seems to be in the works. The night light is a nice touch and helpful. The brightness can be set via the app. This feature can be turned off if required.
Now for the physical fitting. I’m no expert, but class myself as a confident DIYer. The wiring diagram is easy to follow and all the connections are supplied. The down side is the connection to the alarm itself. It sits proud approx 5mm above the back of the alarm and offset to one side. This means you need to make sure the hole in the wall/ceiling is wide enough and deep enough to accommodate the 3 connect blocks and the connection. My previous alarm sat flush with the ceiling so I had to go to task on the ceiling, easier said than done when my home was built in 1890!
Overall great product!
It is just amazing!!!
A must have for a family! I could not resist testing it out myself as I needed to know if it worked. But I will give you the start to finish.
So we received the package (we bought 4 in total) and both looked different, one said NEST (this one) the other had Google on it. A shame that the logo has been taken away as the logo makes it even cooler! We read the instructions and pinpointed where the would be going. We installed one and the next 3 were so easy, just a press off a button to be short. One is in the kitchen (see pictures) and the other ones in the hallway. We wanted Nest as we already have the thermostats (you must buy them, they are awesome)
When you have installed them, you run a test. This makes you aware of how loud the voice and alarms are but they do the job they are meant to be doing.
Now yesterday I couldn’t resist. I usually never open my oven when baking but I just had to test the alarm (see picture). It works amazing and I just love it.
It sends a message to your phone (nest app) and all the alarms says the same thing. The one thing they do not tell you is:
IT EVEN SHOWS ON MY THERMOSTATS
I can write a book to tell you how amazing they are! I knew the products were good, but this is just amazing.
Next up is the camera’s for the house haha, then I think the doorbell and by then we might have the whole family of products 🙂

Expensive But Excelle
Fantastic piece of equipment.
I purchased two of these to replace my ageing hard wired smoke alarm. These new alarms are excellent. They were easy to install and the included instructions were simple to follow.
The auto light that senses when someone is passing and turns on is great for early mornings with a subtle glow to show you the way.
Very easy to setup
Very easy to install, the 2nd one is even easier as it gets the WiFi info from the first detector.
I like that a quick green glow (with lights out show that all is “OK”
I haven’t bothered with the “Pathway” option as with two cats it seemed like an excuse to buy batteries monthly!
Easy install, works well
Works well, very easy to setup. Especially 2+ units as they copy info across. Night light movement sensor is great. Used to use a IoT lamp and movement sensor, but the softer glow much nicer at night.
Would have liked to get integration with IoT / API access to extend my house automation. But as a standalone devices, they are great.
Great product one wired in.
Took my time choosing a new fire alarm after redecorating and 3 months on im very please with this one. Love the motion sensor night light, subtle but very effective. They look so much nicer than the cheaper fire alarms. Wiring up was a little tricky, I would advise you use your own chocolate block screw connectors not the push in ones supplied. With i tried them they kept unclipping and it would lose power/connection. Would recommend
Great produc
It needs to be fitted by an electrician obviously but I saw that they had no problem to install it. I love the fact that you can monitor it from your phone. It speaks to inform you of what’s happening and whatever it detects will be communicated to your phone making it easy for you to be immediately informed of any issue and take action if needed
Feel safer with the nest.
Brought the nest to our new home that already had three wired in alarms. The nest has already picked up on smoke coming from the dodgy oven two times before the other alarms, even though it is installed in the hallway further away from the kitchen. Very sensitive. The friendly softlighting that comes on to light your way when you shuffle past it in the dark on the way to the toilet at two in the morning adds to its reassuring presence.
Easy to set up, able to receive warnings on your phone. I bought it after reading which magazines test and review about it massively outperforming all other smoke alarms on the market. It is expensive, but you can’t put a price on your familys safety. Doesn’t dissapoint. I’d highly recommend.
Great smoke detecto
I now have 4 of these throughout my house, two of which I replaced older Fire Angel units with.
Set up is relatively easy & once hard wired into the power supply, you are good to go.
Night light is a little bonus, that I didn’t think we would notice, but it really is a nice touch.
I really like the app and the monthly health checks.
No hesitation in recommending these units, being old school I would recommend installing ones that are hard wired to an electrical supply.
Nest protec
Great item but not impressed that it was manufactured 12 months ago so if you go by what is stated on the unit you instantly lose those 12 months.
Worth every penny for the peace of mind they offer.
So far these have been flawless, seen other reviews stating that theirs had gone off randomly. They automatically test themselves to make sure they’re working. Had them for 6 months and they’ve worked a charm. The silence button is awesome for the kitchen. Also these things are LOUD i have one in every bedroom and one downstairs and landing. With the boiler located in one of the bedrooms the carbon monoxide alarm is also an excellent addition.
Set up was easy and quick and the actuall installation was a doddle requiring you to tighten a few screws. Also reading online that these can integrate with other nest products and even better, I love it when company’s provide this, they’re fully compatible with IFTTT. Which provide a whole load of additional features.
For example. I have mine to turn all lights in my house if the alarm sounds. This could be especially useful for people who are hard of hearing. Set the lights to red to signify something is wrong and to leave. Although this may not be 100% reliable it’s nice to offer it. This functionality can be achieved if you have a Nest learning thermostat as well.
Great alarm
Love these smoke alarms – the most important point is that it uses voice as well as an alarm – the voice wakes the kids up straight away whereas we know they will sleep through a regular alarm (we set the alarms off in centre parks once and it was SOOO LOUD but the kids all slept through it!!).
Also love the path light function on the landings – great feature to give a bit of light at nighttime when you are moving around the house.
Look quite smart on the ceiling.
It’s a lot of money for a smoke alarm but it’s a lot more than a smoke alarm and totally worth it from my perspective.

Will buy one for upstairs. Rally good.
These are by no means a cheap smoke detector but they are really good.
Once you connect it to power and connect to the internet it opens up a lot of possibilities
We have the detector linked to IFTT so when smoke is detected it turns on all the Philips hue lights we have and makes them red (this is the best colored light in the event of smoke)
Yes. It’s expensive but even the voice prompts are really helpful.
Install harder than the battery version/beware of the 10 Yr lifetime claim as ours arrived with less
If you haven’t installed the wired version before, the installation is not as easy (understandably) as the battery version. The main issue I found was that the plug on the back of the Nest Protect obviously sticks out and must go into the hole in the celling but the plug IS NOT centred on the back. This means that you need to line up the mounting plate off centre to the hole in the celling. If you factor this in, then it is much easier to install.
Also, be aware that although the Amazon description claims that it has a 10 year lifespan, ours did not. It arrived with just over 9 years left. I queried this with Amazon and they kindly sent out replacements, however, these were further “out of day” than the original ones sent. Other than this the product is every bit as good as other reviews say. We now have several in our house and they work brilliantly. Expensive, but brilliant none the less!

less then 10 years lifespa
Disappointing that mine was made a year ago so I lose a year on the ten year life of the product. Also be aware that wiring / connection blocks that come with it may require you to hack a bigger hole in the ceiling then originally there to house them. Time will tell if I still like the product itself. connected seamlessly to my Goggle home and will update as i go.
Worth the investment!
I got my first Nest Protect over a year ago and decided to replace all of my detectors for a fully Nest solution. Installation was straightforward, from wiring and mounting to wireless setup and linking between multiple Nest Protects. I can not fault these – they’re superb and whilst they’re expensive, for the automatic testing, notifications, voice alerts and reliability, they’re a worthwhile investment and in my opinion are great value for money.
Just brillia
OMG – welcome to the world of Nest. These are great, haven’t been used ‘in anger’ but the data and feedback from them is amazing.
It even doubles as a night time motion sensor to tell me when my toddlers are roaming the corridors.
Beware, after buying one, I bought another and another and The Nest thermostat. It’s addictive – because it’s well made, functional and does what it says on Amazon!
Great product which is easy to set up
Fitment and set up are fairly straightforward. The wiring kit and connector blocks work nicely. Worth making sure that the ceiling hole for the wiring is bored out to the same diameter as the hole in the centre of the backplate or it will cause issues with fitting the unit to the plate once you’ve plugged it in; Its also easier if you feed all the wiring into the ceiling hole before trying to fit the detector.
Bought 14 March 2020, manufactured date June 2019.
I didn’t use it yet but I am sure it will be just fine. It is one year old already so there is that . I don’t know if I will return it yet.
Brilliant alarm
This has been installed in my kitchen for about six months now and I have to say that I’m really impressed by it. The system runs monthly checks on both alarms and notifies you through the nest app, I especially like the voice notifications when smoke is detected In house (cooking) plus the built in light is great when you get up at night for a stroll around the kitchen ,it bright enough for you to see so no switching on lights, I plan on replacing two other smoke alarms with this great product.
Fantastic sensor from Nes
Wow, I have to say I ma very impressed! Works like magic, very modern design and it will glow when it’s dark and you passing by it. I am very happy with the purchase. You can control it from your mobile, it will show you timeline of all the events, just fantastic. Hope it will work like that all the time. A little bit expensive but I still think it’s worth the price. When you buy mains wired they are cheaper, but definitely buy multipack as this is best value for money.
Excellent produc
Easy to setup and use. If you have any problems customer service is fantastic. But do you really really need all this cool features. Doubt it. But its cool as hell 🙂
P.s Besides being cool it works well to detect smoke.
Most reassuring alarms
Very easy to install and set up ( link to your WiFi). I Brought 3 of the alarms after buying an old house and wanting to change the the smoke and CO2 alarms. Really like the fact they all link to each other, for example we had an alarm activated on Boxing Day, the roast started smoking from fat (roast pork) and whilst we were in the lounge the alarm spoke and said there is smoke in the hall way, whichever alarm is activated first it then relays the message to all the alarms in the house upstairs etc and sets them off, so it’s not just one alarm that sounds. I Like the fact the lights also tell you what is going on.the pathway light is great. The alarms self test monthly and you can see all the statuses via the app. CO2 part has a great feature that if you link the alarms to a smart thermostat it can shut off the boiler if CO2 is detected even if your away from the house.
On another note our four year isn’t spooked and upset by these alarms as it tells what is happening before a test etc.
Very happy with these alarms, slightly expensive BUT I don’t believe you can really put a price on safety when it comes to your family.

Brilliant in every way!
Brilliant, I added this upstairs to my existing Nest System, as I have one of these alarms downstairs.
Seamless in operation, attractively designed, superbly constructed and innovative and effective in use, so much more than a smoke alarm.
The Self-Test facility is brilliant and amuses visitors kids when it activates and the fluorescent LED Halo Night light so cool. It even tells me when the toast is ready even though the kitchen donor is shut and the toast not actually burning, very sensitive but not in a bad way.
All round brilliant and delivered very speedily!
Expensive but reassuring
They look good and are easy to install particularly if you already have other Nest products. I like the fact they test themselves and they light up at night when you walk under them. The only downside is the cost and the fact that installing in the kitchen is discouraged but that is where the boiler is. We might have to get a separate unsmart carbon monoxide alarm for the kitchen or put a nest one somewhere just outside the kirche
Very Impressed
Really simple to install, simple to set up. The only thing I would look out for is the Amazon listings are mixed up – the install video and description for the wired were on the battery powered listing and vice versa, so initially ordered the wrong one, but other than that, a really impressive bit of kit. Knows the difference between toast smoke and smoke that could actually be a problem, and gives a polite warning. No more false alarms! Will definitely be adding another one upstairs.
For your main lounge and upstairs this is probably the best smoke/C02 alarm
I like these so much, when the price dropped I brought another…
… two of these can cover the main living space and upstairs, with a loud taking female voice as well as the typical alarm sound. This is good as a voice is better at waking folk, especially children. If one goes off it tells the other, which also speaks as to where the issue is and also sets off the alarm. It also detects early issues with smoke and C02 giving a warning first but any prolonged or significant issue sets of the normal alarm.
NOTE:
When any smoke/fire/heat alarm is installed the user/owner instructions should be checked to see if there’s a recommended replacement date. This is more common than it used to be and seems to follow feedback from users so manufacturers and testing authorities gauge the life of sensors and other degradation caused by build up of grim and dust etc.

Declaration: I work for Google but I don’t have anything to do with these products and I’m not interested in promoting their stuff. I’m writing this as a consumer.)
I bought these after moving to a new house and needing smoke alarms in the usual places – kitchen, bedrooms, near the boiler. They’re nicely built pieces of kit, and blend in unobtrusively on a white ceiling. They’re actually stylish for what they are. Other manufacturers don’t seem to consider that these things become part of the decor.
Setting up was a little tricky as they failed to connect to the wireless network I’d set up. I managed in the end by connecting to an alternate network but the message was cryptic and all I could find was that it might be down to DNS or maybe uPNP. This completely blocked the setup for a while. Some clues at least in the error messages would be good. I know the trend is to have things that hide the technical details away from the end-user, but this just caused inconvenience.
They come with good quality batteries already installed, and the mounting bracket is easy to fit. It allows you to make small adjustments to make sure it’s straight compared to the line of the walls. It’s quite robust and I only needed a screwdriver. There are screws included.
It’s an effective smoke alarm. It performs well, it’s loud and the app connection works as it says it does.
There’s only so much you can say about a smoke/CO detector. Here’s hoping it sits and lasts for ages so it can justify its cost.
Value protectio
Very easy to place, install and set up
App is easy to use and quickly gets units up and running
The inbuilt night light is really sensitive however even on lowest settings provides enough light to light area.
This can be easily turned off if unit on bedroom or not required in other areas.
It’s loud! There is no way you’ll not hear this.
Only criticism is the alleged 10 year lifespan….it’s from date of manufacture not purchase so if its been sat on Amazon warehouse for months your missing out on months (7 months in our case)
Overall though highly recommended
Interconnected, great design for security
I bought six second-generation detectors. Amazon UK prices are lower than elsewhere. I’m happy with these detectors even if they are among the most expensive on the market. They are very easy to install, they are interconnected: i.e. they all emit a signal in case of a smoke alert and can be configured by giving them a label each one so that they indicate the place where the smoke comes from. Two problems: generation 1 was planned for a lifetime of 7 years, 5 have problems with battery consumption after 5 years and these stupid engineers have changed the fasteners and especially the holes in the fasteners between the first and second generation: non sense.

The best smoke/co detector there is to find!
ot the cheapest but the overall functionalities and quality make it worthwhile. Super easy to install – does regular tests and informs you about it through the app. Lots of extra features (nightlamp – home/away function – regular automatic tests – indication of smoke/fire – ability to detect steam (handy if you have it installed next to a bathroom of kids ;-)),… Would definitely recommend it!
he hole needed for mains cable had to bigger than first though
once it connected and installed its great. I haven’t seen ti work in anger yet (tempted to burn some toast to see) 2 main grumbles – 1) The fixing to the ceiling, is not clear that the hole in the ceiling needs to be large enough to rotate the cable. (about 3 cm) Once the mains cable is plugged into the device it has to rotate at least 90 degrees to lock and the plug to the power is not in the centre of the back which rotates and there is no room between the device and the clamp on the ceiling unless the hole is large enough to allow ther cable to rotate. (see photo)
2) the Nest app would not connect to my G-suite google, after getting “something went wrong” for 20 mins, I used my free Google account and all worked as documented.
