I put it under the fireplace door, opened the door for a moment, and it began to sound in a second.
With us it will be 30 cm above the ground.

This was bought to replace another smoke / CO2 detector . If it lasts as long as our last Kidde detector then we’ll be pleased.

Says either FIRE or CARBON MONOXIDE so you know why its alarming.

Good to also get a vocal warning as my wife cannot hear the frequency of the alert signal. Yet to experience the need for the alarm and I hope I never will but the toaster does prove the smoke alarm works.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought two of these to replace some older model Kidde smoke/CO alarms that were about 10 years old. Fitting was super easy. I was pleasantly surprised that the mounting plates are identical to my existing ones, so for these two there was no drilling required.

I also like the updated battery compartment which is now accessible from the front of the unit so no need to remove it from the mounting plate to change the battery.

    Overall very happy with these.

Very pleased with this model. The voice warning is clear and precise. A good idea if led lights not too clear. The 10 year life of the CO2 detector is a bonus. The battery compartment on the front makes life easier to change the battery without the need to take down from ceiling.

This was a very good quality replacement for our old smoke alarm. I really like the little touches like how easy the battery is to replace. The sensitivity is also great – doesn’t keep going off when I fry something whereas my cheap old one used to always start blaring. Well worth it, recommended.

We bought this to take on holiday as not all hotels/apartments abroad are fitted with smoke and CO detectors as standard. It’s very useful to have both combined in one unit, even if it’s a little bulky. I was a little annoyed to find out that Aldi sell this exact item for half the price though.

A good bit of kit that does two jobs in one and I can’t fault it. However, a lot bigger than I at first thought. Perhaps another item in the picture to put it into perspective might have helped.

Installed on the wall without any problems, tested to make sure it works…..nice loud sounds, and the voice is easy to understand. So If there was a fire or carbon monoxide escape, I am sure it would alert me. Good value.

Our previous alarm would go off even when doing toast which wasn’t even dark brown. I particularly like the ‘hush’ button which silenced the alarm should it go off when there isn’t really a problem. It then re-sets itself after a specific period of time.

I bought this to replace existing product of the same brand that had reached the end of its effective life (and told me so by beeping every thirty seconds, not in itself a bad thing to happen). I liked that the previous one had lasted a decade (hands up everyone who vacuums their alarm every month) and I wanted a combined CO2 and fire warning. This one even fitted into the same wall mounting. It also features a child lock. Shame they had to change the battery type. I liked it that the old one took AAs new one takes MN1604 like everything else but it was included so mustn’t grumble. Recommend.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis saves having two separate smoke and carbon monoxide alarms – and has a voice warning to tell you why the alarm has activated to save confusion.
You always wonder whether these alarms are money well spent as you don’t know if they work until the emergency occurs, but in this case you have the certainty that Which tested it and were impressed.
So one alarm instead of two, cheaper than most, and certainly cheaper than buying two separate alarms with the assurance that you’re getting a good buy from the Which review.
It is worrying, given the type of product, that Which actually found some other alarms that were so poor they rated them ‘Don’t Buys’

  29. DarbyPaspalis says:

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis updated version is easy to test and the battery compartment is easily accessed. Audible and visual warnings for Carbon Monoxide (clear, odourless poison resulting from incomplete combustion of gas in the boiler) – the silent killer, and for smoke detection. Easy to fit, – template supplied just rotates into place on ceiling via two screws ( have to pre-drill and plug the holes) . Alarm unit itself rotates into place on the template with a ‘click’ – ready to go for testing – press central button for 3 secs and wait. Nice , compact unit.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersThis is an excellent product. Had a similar older model which came to the end of its useful life so replaced it with this one. Front loading 9V battery is a nice feature. Also good that I could use the previous mounting ring without having to screw a new one in my ceiling. A must have detector for any safety conscious family with oil or gas central heating. Easy to install plus when required, easy battery replacement without having to remove from the ceiling. I have one in the sitting room and one at the top of the landing. Don’t listen to the bad reviews. This is an essential piece of kit for every home. This company (Kidde) have been making smoke alarms and fire extinguishers for many years. Highly recommended! Ordered another one due to one of my alarms reaching the end of its carbon monoxide life. I have a conservatory on the back of my house I wanted a smoke alarm in this room because sometimes the sofa bed in this room is used by family who want to sleep over so just in case a fire breaks out in my house it is better to be safe than sorry. This voice alarm works perfectly and I am 100% sure it would wake a sleeping person to alert them of any fire or dangerous smoke.

  46. BridgetCascarre says:

Very easy to install … however reading the information it’s slightly unnerving to find when the unit comes to the end of its life, it tells you in its own voice, so basically, you should now throw me away, I’m not reliable any more …sorry ….how sad it that!

Much better than the previous units. It allows you to swap the battery without taking the unit down from the ceiling. Also, it suggests wall or ceiling mounting, whereas the previous ones only appeared to prefer ceiling. When testing, it’s VERY loud (which is great).

Nice to have a carbon monoxide detector together with a smoke alarm in one. Press the test button in the middle and it speaks the alarm for both. When the battery goes down, the normal flash of green, to show it’s working, is preceeded by a red flash, then, after afew days/weeks, l didn’t notice it straightaway, the alarm speaks the battery needs replacing.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersI bought a few of these as we just had pellet stoves installed in our home. I did some research on which ones have good sensors and which brands are reliable… etc, and this make and model came up over and over, so I went with it. I’m very safety conscious so when they arrived I wasn’t going to just press the test button and assume they work fine, as I’m relying on these things to save the lives of my family and me. So, I put them to the test.

Smoke: I stuck them with double-sided tape temporarily on the ceiling while I tested them. Firstly I tried cigarettes, well a cigar actually. My partner and I don’t smoke, but I enjoy a once a year cheeky cigar at Christmas. General normal smoking won’t set them off unless you’re blowing the smoke directly into the detector or maybe if you have a party and lots of people are smoking.
Blowing out a single candle is not enough to set them off which is great, but 3 or more candles being blown out will.
Over-cooking toast or any food, heating oil in a frying pan… etc will set them off if they’re within 20m. I’ve purposely repeated these tests multiple times and in different rooms to make 100% sure they’re working fine and placed correctly.

Carbon Monoxide: I tested them by starting my car in the garage and leaving it running for a little while, I also tested them by starting my generator in my shed/workshop. I placed the detectors on a top shelf 30-40cm from the ceiling. CO detectors are not designed to sound an alarm immediately upon detecting any CO, as a small amount is perfectly safe, they check the levels of CO and if they increase continuously over a short time, then they sound an alarm as this would mean you have a leak somewhere, or they will sound the alarm if levels suddenly spike above a dangerous level if you had a sudden and large leak.
So, with a modern catalytic car running in a large double garage the alarms all sounded after roughly 6-7 minutes and they all went off within 30 seconds of each other. I stood in the garage once they had sounded the alarm and after 2 or 3 minutes I could feel a very slight tingly feeling over most of my body, so I would judge that levels of CO in there were high enough that you would start to feel bad after 10-20 minutes but not danger to life levels.

So in conclusion, they’re sensitive but too sensitive, which is exactly what you want. The alarm is a siren and voice alert, the sirens are different for smoke and CO making it easy to distinguish and extremely loud (no way any normal person could sleep through them), and the voice alert is clear, precise and adds some urgency in my opinion. Hearing a typical smoke alarm siren going off can sometimes, if set off regularly, be brushed off or not given full attention, but hearing a siren and then a human voice shouting: “EMERGENCY! Smoke (or Carbon Monoxide) detected, evacuate… evacuate!” really makes you sit up and pay attention.

TL;DR – I tested them multiple times both with smoke and CO, they work perfectly. We now feel much safer in our home. 5/5 would recommend.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersExcellent item and a gerat price, I will always try to buy the Kidde version of these things when the price comes into range. This one has a different battery to last it loads via the front and is one of the small box batteries. It does mean that changing the battery is easier when fixed in place or as we need to disconnect for periods when we’re not in the house it takes only a push of the button to pop the battery compartment out and disconnect the alarm.

Golden Review Award: 85 From Our UsersThis is a well made product and it is very easy to fit, all you need to do is screw the plastic backplate to the ceiling and then pop the smoke detector on to the backing. The nice thing about it is how easy to change the battery is, with the push to eject battery drawer. The beeps are loud and you don’t need a separate smoke and carbon monoxide detector since this is a 2 in 1. The only thing I would comment on is that the voice isn’t that clear, however the beep tones are very loud.

This fits on the attachment ring used to hold the older version to the wall. This saved drill yet more hole to secure it.
The alarm as a built in obsolescence timer that indicates when the unit should be changed when the detector is worn out. I just hope the replacement will also be designed to use the same fitting ring as it will most likely be a different version.

Ours replaced a previous Kidde Smoke alarm. The ceiling fixing bracket was the same size as the old one but the screw holes were differently spaced requiring another hole in the ceiling – why not make them the same?! When tested the voice didn’t seem particularly loud, but of course I’ve no idea how good it is at smoke and CO detection and hope I never find out.

Not sure if the voice element is needed given I’m not likely to wait around to hear a quiet calm voice tell me what type of peril I’m in while the noxious gas or flames surround me but audible alert to tell me to go and get a new 9 volt battery is welcome, at 85db the alarm uncomfortably loud and would wake a bear from hibernation.

Perfect, as you’d expect. Very well designed; they even have a mechanism to “pop” the 9v batteries in and out.
I’d like to see them made smaller and in a square shape.

Bought as replacement Kidde alarm installed almost 10 years to the month. Never had problem with original alarm. This fitted the original mounting so I could just pop it straight on the mounting plate, and as it comes with a free battery, it’s working straight away. Very efficient.

We had one of these along time ago the same make and it has now broken after many years. This is the updated one easy access to put the 9v battery in and the alarm talks and says either smoke or Carbon Monoxide. Its very clear and loud enough to hear easily.

I bought one of these to replace an old alarm that had died. Installation is straight forward in that you screen a slim base to the ceiling and then the unit itself fixes to that.

The alarm seems loud enough and I like the fact it tells you ( voice ) whether the alarm has been triggered for smoke or carbon.

So pleased with the unit I bought a second.

This is an excellent combined smoke alarm / carbon monoxide alarm. Spoken alerts, an informative status LED and the ‘Hush’ button are excellent features… as is the front accessible pop-out battery compartment. It’s not especially cheap… but compared to buying two decent separate functioning units, it’s actually not bad value… and it’s a whole lot neater.

    Recommended.

A great value alarm for detecting both smoke and carbon monoxide. The audible warnings help quickly identify the cause of the alarm.

It is also loud enough to wake you but I not ear splitting like some alarms are – this is definitely a bonus in instances of false alarms that won’t send you jumping out of your skin!

Difficult to review as fortunately the house hasn’t burnt down since installation but easy to fit and reasonably unobtrusive once installed. The voice warning amuses kids bur would be wearing after a while but then unless suicidal you probably won’t listen to it for long!!

This is a replacement for my old one that I had had for about 10 years. I just hope it will last as long. I arrived on time and I had it put up be a friend who told me it was easy to fit to the wall. Only time will tell if it is a good as the old one. It was the same make so lets hope so!!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI purchased the alarm to replace a Kidde smoke alarm detector which had been in my mobile home for the last ten years. When it started to malfunction I sought a replacement and chose this model because of its dual function. I already have a carbon minoxide alarm but having backup is a great idea. Its easy to fit and operates perfectly.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersWhat a wonderful idea this is it tells you whether the alarm is smoke or carbon monoxide and it also tells you if the batteries are running low. It is a very neat unit and a much better solution than the usual 2 unit setup, I used to have. Overall I would say give it a go, it is well worth it for the peace of mind you get from having it.Remember to check your batteries weekly!
