This is my second – first lasted probably 10+ years before motor failed and I use it a lot as have large garden.
If you can get the jaws round the branch it will cut it.

A handy tool perfect for cutting branches, and even small trees. And particularly for cutting firewood in to useable lengths for my wood-burning stove. Very easy to operate, with a mains extension lead. It is a much safer (and quieter!) option than a regular chain-saw, unless you need to fell thick tree trunks.
Low maintenance and sturdy – my first one lasted over 10 years before the protecting bracket broke, and I’ve now replaced it.

quick easy safe, keep chain well oiled and check for small twigs blocking back of jaws, cut about 500 stove length logs so far without a problem, best tool I’ve bought in a long time

I really like this power tool. It’s easy to use and not intimidating like a chain saw. It cuts through thick branches easily.

Like how the jaws hold logs while you cut them, much quicker and safer than ordinary chainsaw. Would recommend oiling chain and guide bar every ten minutes of use with an oil can as well as oiling oil hole. Used tool to cut up large amount of branches cut from large leylandii trees, really speeded up the job. Remember to tension chain by simply undoing two nuts, spanner supplied, then retighten them. Surprised nobody thought of this very useful tool sooner. Can only operate with both hands on handles, an excellent safety measure.

This the second Alligator I’ve purchased, the first one had undoable screws to access the power lead which had become detatched. I’m appy to see the latest one has conventional screw heads….easy to service should the same problem happen again.

    Works well.
    Goes through logs quickly.
    No issues with its performance.
Created large pile of logs for drying in an hour.
Only slight negative is it is quite heavy to hold after a while.

I have a bad back and the Alligator was just what I needed to tackle the trees and shrubs in my garden without putting too much strain on said back. Comes with a good length of lead too.
Just one thing which I don’t think was made clear enough, well not for this Bear of small brain anyway and that is you will need some chain saw oil. If you possess a chain saw and have a bottle of oil then fine but if not then you need to get a bottle. Not a lot, a litre is more than enough but you will also need a small funnel to decant some of the oil into the small applicator bottle that comes with the saw.

To conclude a good bit of ki

This is a brilliant bit of kit if like us you have a 20 year old hornbeam hedge with thick trunks and branches that needs cutting back. It’s like a hot knife through butter on 4″ trunks and it’s so simple to operate. It is slightly heavy but take your time and the job will be a breeze. Just wish we’d bought it years ago!

A good help around the garden especially when removing conifers.
Just be sure to oil the chain after 10 minutes use.
The chain sometimes comes off the track if you overload the saw (with too large a branch) but it is easily relocated.

Cuts through branches up to 4 inches with ease. Can safely lift up to a reasonable height to reach higher branches. Wood cuttings seem to clear away easily from the mechanism after cuts are made. The way the saw blade is enclosed is a great feature. Well-designed tool.

Why didn’t I buy these a long time ago? Slices through branches easily in seconds. Safer to use and lighter than an open chainsaw, these are ideal for small to medium-sized branches, especially on living bushes and small trees. By gripping the wood a bit like pliers they provide their own stability while cutting. Wish I’d known about this garden tool earlier!

very useful for trimming overgrown shrubs with branches of over 50mm which would take an age with hand saw and not really possible to do with ordinary chainsaw
keeping the chain well oiled and correct tension is important

I had a large Laurel Bush in my back garden which was over 30 years old so it really was a fair size. I tried cutting the heavy trunks with a large pruning saw which was extremely hard and time consuming. The Aligator saw made quick work of this. I’m not keen on using a chain saw but this has guards each side of the blade which feels a lot safer. Cuts through wood very quickly and the guards move back as the blade goes deeper into the wood so it’s not restricting the depth of the cut.

Best part about it are the safety features incorporatd into the deisgn, which you don’t get with a standard chain saw. Very pleased that i bought this and i know it will last me for years to come. Full marks to Black & Decker for producing it !

Amazing tool. If your looking at this Alligator than you already need something to cut up anything from small sticks to 5″ logs. Let me tell you this is the safest, quickest and actually fun way to do it. It grips the wood and forces it into the blade, no more getting the right angle with a chainsaw and having the blade get pinched or logs rolling away. My 16yo son is now a tree surgeon with this thing. Really really impressed with this tool.

This is perfect for trimming over grown trees and is much safer to use than a normal chain saw. I did use a ladder to reach 10 feet high trees so no great height involved but the instructions tell you not to use with a ladder. This job is done roughly every three years and the last time I did it, it took me two days with a reciprical saw and it wasn’t easy. With this Alligator it took me about 3 hours, with no sweat! Recommended!!!

I hesitated buying this when I read some reviews that said it didn’t cut. I have now used it to cut branches over 3 inches in diameter. It slices through them with ease. I can only assume others that found it could not cut anything had installed the chain in the wrong direction. My saw had the chain preinstalled so there was no problem there.
It isn’t the lightest piece of kit but it’s not too heavy either even when using in a ladder.

Great bit of kit, saved me hours of cutting with a hand saw, can cope with quite chunky branches /logs, my only reason for not giving it 5 stars is the fact that it doesn’t have an internal oil bottle to keep the chain properly oiled, and the little squeeze bottle that came with it to manually lube the chain is very poor so you end up with more oil on your hands and surroundings than in the little hole that you’re supposed to squirt it in every 10 minutes of use. All in all does a good job and is easy and safe to use.

This is basically a small chainsaw without the scariness-there’s no risk of kick-back from this as the chain is within a guard. I’m a fairly small woman but I have lopped large branches, cut down small trees and turned piles of branches into neat logs for the woodburner. Very satisfying.

Saw some reviews saying that it isn’t powerful/will only cut through twigs. Rubbish!! Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersThe Alligator is a fantastic bit of kit. I’m on my second one now, the first lasted three years before the motor burned out, but during that time it did a lot of work.
I recently used it for taking down a 20 foot conifer hedge with approx 8″ trunks and with some careful rotation it will eat things far larger than the bar length. Apart from the very high stuff which i used a polesaw for, it did everything, right down to slicing all the wood into logs ready for the fire.
The best thing about this is that all the usual danger and precaution i take with the full size chainsaw is thrown to the wind and you can just get stuck in. There is never any danger of the chain touching the ground and it can’t really kick back on you. Even if it did the jaws would snap shut.
Its nice and quiet too, well in comparison anyway.
But its not all good, so here’s a few things that have let it down.
The auto oiler is a bit rubbish. it should really have a little tank, so every 30 mins or so you have to drip some more oil in and i usually rub some on the chain too for good measure.
The chain can jump off, but if you ensure the adjuster bolts are really tight it doesn’t happen very often. It usually happens with loose bits of wood that jump about and rattle the chain. When it happens it just stops. no danger.
It can get a big clogged up, so it needs a good shaking and cleaning after each use.
The power cable can get twisted as you work. I’d prefer a cordless , but the battery life is supposedly poor on this model.
Overall though i’d highly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersWARNING! This tool could result in a garden full of tree stumps! LOL
The minute this came out of the box I was off to the garden, chopping down small unwanted tree growth merrily! It is extremely easy to use, but the cable is short, so a good quality extension lead will be required in most cases.
The instructions are not very clear about the chain adjustment, but a quick youtube search sorted that out.
It will not cut through more than 4 inches, but it cuts that like knife through butter.
It is a heavy sturdy tool, and in the 2 weeks I’ve had it, it has proven its worth with many many car load trips to the tip.
I am very happy with it.
Pro Tip: Best to have a garden slave for gathering debris in your wake of destruction 😉

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersCutting down very small trees or pruning small branches with a chainsaw is reasonably straightforward and safe if you do so with care. Cutting up the tree and branches on the ground if a different matter as there is nothing to hold the trunk/branches in place while you cut with a conventional chainsaw. This is where the Aligator makes the job simple and safe. It firmly holds what’s being cut and the chainsaw section pulls the branch tight into the jaws as it’s being cut – no risk of kickback which is always present with a conventional chainsaw. Easily cuts branches and young trees up to 4 inches thick with ease. Wish I had gotten one sooner. Great tool but only let down by the oil bottle supplied with it which leaks all over the place when trying to fill the Aligators oil reservoir. I threw it away and bought a better designed bottle for the purpose.

Would recommend this to anyone who needs a reliable and practical garden tool.

Handy for logging small to medium branches without assistance from a third party. Also good for heavy pruning without the fear of an open chain saw kicking back .

Like that it’s easy to handle and the chain is enclosed. Used for cutting small logs.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis thing is a BEAST. I’ve used it to cut 4 trees down in my back garden as well as lots of hedges. Like any tool, respecting what it is made for and how it works will get you the best results.
As pointed out in other posts, the key is to buy some chainsaw oil and lube the chain every 10-15mins of use. I also used that time to use a pliers and pull out any bunched up twigs (power off obviously!).

It might seem annoying to have to do the above but trust me you get quite quick at it and you’re back cutting fairly quickly. It’ll lesson the likelihood that the chain will slip or break on you or something worse!

Anyone who has seen me use this has said they want to buy one. I guess a lot of people like myself like the idea of using this over an open chainsaw.

Absolutely fantastic tool, used for hours on end, we now attach it to a spare car battery when we need to work away from a power source.

It does seem to be really important to follow the advice on maintenance and chain tightening, but you’d expect that on any chainsaw.

The oil tank is also very difficult to get the oil into, however we just pump it directly on to the chain more frequently.

Makes short safe work of cutting branches. Cut branches around 10cm mark with ease in seconds. Make sure the chain is oiled regularly and that logs are properly held to avoid them rotating in the jaws. Beware of the amount of green waste you’ll need to dispose of!

This lopper is easy to use and for ladies it is much better than chain saws ( which frighten me a bit and difficult to use). Does need to be oiled very regularly but that is the nature of the beast and quite simple to do. Could do with a slightly more flexible oil container so as to make it a bit more “squeezy” – I bought my own plastic squeeze bottle. Watched how to use video.

This would be brilliant, but I didn’t know that you had to plug it in. I haven’t used it yet. I live on a hill and my garden is a lot lower than the house. Would I have to use an extension lead to get to the garden?I don’t know that they would sell an extension lead long enough to reach it.

I have 3 petrol chainsaws and one electric chainsaw. None of them are useful for smaller logs and branches that are not still on the tree, since they roll. I assumed this would be naff because of how cheap they are. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Because of the way it works, it pulls in the branch so always has an amazing grip. It’s a tad on the heavy size, for what it is, and the oil nipple is a bit of a fiddle, but I’m giving it 5 stars because of how well it does what it’s meant to.

Good but don’t bother trying to use the clever lubrication system, just slap oil on every few minutes.

Fantastic tool, whizzed through several small trees in the back garden in no time – chopped the lot up into one foot sections. Should have got one years ago.

Arrived yesterday and so immediately set about chopping up two large tree limbs that have blighted the back of the garden. Super simple to use and feels much safer than conventional chainsaw. Like a hot knife through butter.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI previously used a B & D corded chain saw for many years, but find it difficult to handle now. So I purchased this with all its safety features. . I was not disappointed it does all I want. Cutting through thicker branches my loppa want cut ,plus it does not bounce back if you touch the ground and the chain is enclosed in a “Pair of Jaws”. Much safer than my original chain saw. Also it can cut branches up to a medium size 4″/100mm. The only niggle is the oil applicator I use my small oil can,its not as messy. .It is easy to use and safer. Well worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 30 From Our UsersI bought this to replace another one I had, which lasted me about 10 years (I think) with plenty of rough handling and cutting through the cord once. I highly recommend this lopper if you have lots of bushes/tree branches to cut. So much quicker than an ordinary lopper. Also, once you have the branches in a pile, this is the quickest and easiest way to chop them up so they can be fitted in bags for the tip. I also use them for smaller things (for speed) but some stuff gets wrapped around the chainsaw blade- you need to keep pulling it out, and every so often, take the cover off to get it all out and free everything off again. But this is easy to do, and it it is still the easiest way to chop a lot of stuff up. I have also used it to cut thicker branches than you are supposed to, by cutting round bit by bit. It is faily heavy, but I am a small women and can manage to use them for quite a long time before tiring. It is also much less scary (and seems much safer) than a proper chain saw (I think.) In short, I find these extremely useful and time saving in the garden- well worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA really handy piece of kit. As others have said the chain oil system is poor and the documentation on this really should tell you more regarding oil application. For example I have no idea whether there is a reservoir of oil in the machine (as on petrol chainsaws) Again like others I ended up unplugging and then applying the occasional film of oil to the chain – I have no idea as to whether this is enough. I’d advise people not to use it on thin twigs that would come off with secateurs as this will often throw the chain. When you are cutting light wood that’s lying on the ground, make a firm initial grip as this will prevent it from suddenly rotating dangerously. The GK1000 is happy to cut quite large diameter branches. Well worth the money.
