We’ve been having an ongoing problem with pigeons. They would empty our previous “pigeon proof” feeder in 90 minutes. They would crowd over it and gobble up all the sunflower hearts, not giving the little birds a chance. At one point I was filling the feeder twice a day so I was having to buy seed regularly.
Can the pigeons still get at the seed? Yes, a couple can..but there’s significantly less pigeons and most importantly the little birds can eat. I find the pigeons are even less interested if I half fill it.
Pros:
Large feeder, good sized feeding tube, looks nice, easy to fill without spilling seed, well made, coated with germ resistant coating, has four perches (and four feeding holes) inside which the birds use, comes apart well for cleaning, the lid keeps the rain out and the lid makes it hard for pigeons to loiter as they can’t get a good grip.
Cons:
The lid is very tricky. It’s like a bayonet bulb and takes a lot of practice to be able to open and close it. It’s a case of press and turn. I’m using this outside my flat window so it’s important nothing falls so my husband drilled a small hole into the edge of the lid to secure it which doesn’t affect the waterproof aspect. We also secured the inner section just in case. I’d give it five stars if the lid was easier to use.
Would I recommend this feeder?
Yes. My windowsill isn’t full of fighting, greedy pigeons so far. It’s been out there for a week and the majority of pigeons have moved on and most importantly the small birds can eat without being scared off by big flappy wings.
Great feeder, however, I bought two from Amazon Warehouse “used but very good”, one does not have a lid. Three Amazon warehouse purchases this week, two in poor, used, spoiled/parts missing condition, despite being sold as “used but very good ” . Quality control, anyone?
This is a very sturdy feeder. The small birds love it. Only down side is the lid on mine doesn’t twist into the locking slots so I have had to wire it down with some picture hanging wire. Also I am unable to twist off the top for cleaning. It is squirrel proof though. The only way the squirrels can get any seed is by shaking some out!
Bought this to prevent squirrels from eating all the seed. It works well except, within a day, the squirrels were able to get the lid off. I keep the seed level low now so they have trouble reaching i
I am very happy with this bird feeder. It does what it says. Only down side, there is nothing to stop some seed coming out as you fill it and the birds can`t get the remainder of the seed at the bottom. You have to tip the feeder upside down to get it out. would be good if you could actually take the feeder apart.
Bought this to feed the small birds in the garden and to stop the starlings stealing all the food. It works!
Haven’t had to clean it yet so cannot comment on that. The only thing I’d say is that the top of the feeder doesn’t really open and close that well, however it still functions ok with out the twist and lock. The bars are just wide enough for the sparrows but too close together for the starlings. Sturdy product. It took the birds about 3 or 4 days to get used to it!
It has taken some time for the birds to start to feed from this feeder. My slight concern is that the wires are a bit too close for the sparrows to feel comfortable entering it. I hope it will be used more as they become more confident – at least it is stopping the jackdaws and pigeons.
We don’t want to feed what we consider vermin, since grey squirrels are an undesirable invasive species.
Would happily feed the native red squirrels if there were any where we live.
Product works well and also keeps large birds from feeding.
An update to original feedback.
The crows have learnt to rock hard the mealworm feeders to drop them on the floor.
The squirrels have learnt to lift the lids and turn to get in the top.
I bought this to stop parakeets but they managed to get the food despite the bars, so I have added garden wire diagonally across many of the opening where the seed openings are located. This works a treat and the parakeets have given up at last. It is about time the manufacturers redesigned the feeder to stop parakeets which are becoming more of a nuisance as their numbers rapidly increase in the U.K.
The small birds have no problems with my adaptations. Also, I have had no problems with the top cover which many have mentioned.
Quality cage, heavy and detachable handle would improve it however good produc
It’s early day yet but looks and feels good quality.
Certainly very sturdy. Will it keep the squirrels out all year? One can only hope, but this is the best design I’ve seen so far.
The only downside to this product is it limits the size of birds who can feed from it. Blue tits and sparrows are fine but larger birds such as green finches they can’t get near the seed.
Bought this to replace one I had had for a long time. They are durable and keep the squirrels ou
This looks like a nice bird feeder. just a couple of ‘ buts’. The top is quite hard to take on and off when hanging and no birds have eaten from it yet – after several weeks.
feeding the birds, the tops are a bit fiddley and you have to makes the are both securely fastened the right way (first time round when I picked it up it fell on my foot) but once you get the hang of it the actual product is brilliant, completely baffled the squirrels and they have,nt worked out how to get round it which saves me forever chasing them down the garde
Well constructed and keeps the ruddy squirrels out of the food.
Only slight downside is it is a bit fiddly when refilling (you need 3 hands) but overall a very sturdy and rodent proof bird feeder.
It can be very difficult to remove the large cover which holds the seed holder but it will probably get easier with practice. Birds do get used to feeding from this item after a few days. Squirrels are kept away from the feed.
I have 4 squirrels visiting my garden this year for the first time ever, and have wanted to encourage them BUT thay had chewed and broken so many birdfeeders, that I had to take action. This absolutely does the job. Small birds took a few days to approach it, but they are back eating now. Squirrels have tried climbing on branches to get to it, but with no success, so they have given up, and settling for their own food. Absolutely delighted with this purchase.
Easy to dismantle for cleaning.
Holes too small for larger birds and squirrels
Sturdy
Encouragingly sturdy and feels like a good piece of kit. It can be difficult to open the cover to access the seed tube but it does open eventually. Take care to be certain the unit is correctly assembled before filling and hanging and that the lugs on the lid are properly located. I have only seen Blue, Great and Coal Tits visiting so far but that may be more to do with location (third floor wall in Putney.)
Really happy with the product. Lid is a bit fiddly, but water tight and squirrel proof. Need some strenghth in the fingers to open anf close. Great to see the little birds getting their fair share of the bird seed. Delivered on time… can fully recommend.
This squirrel proof feeder may be more expensive that some you can buy in the shops but it is much better quality, it is metal with a nice light brown/tan finish. We bought it to stop the squirrels eating all the sunflower seeds, it has definitely worked so far, we have had squirrels climbing all over it to gain access but without success. Some birds were a bit wary at first but they soon managed to get in and out through the mesh. We have even had Robins feeding from it. I don’t write many reviews bu I would recommend this feeder.
It’s been a great success for me with attracting birds to my garden. Sparrows, robins, blue tits in particular, and blackbirds, starlings and doves to pick up the bits that fall. It took about 4 weeks or so till the birds really got used to it, but from then on the bird numbers in my garden have only grown. I even saw a black cap near the feeder today for the first time ever. I would definitely recommend it. It’s easy to clean, easy to fill, and above all keeps the bird food dry. I am thinking of getting another one. 100% brilliant product and well designed.
Brilliant birdfeeder. It keeps not only the larger birds and squirrels from raiding the seed but also the Starlings. Would certainly recommend this to anyone.
Well constructed bird feeder which will be a major challenge to an squirrel.
It looks very sturdy and well made the only issue I had is with the lid’s and the locking mechanism, be warned it is not easy as you have 2 parts to the lid to lock and aline and twist . I could not rate it regarding cleaning the feeder as only recived it today. It looks squirrel proof I will find out tomorrow.
Ok, The good points about this birdfeeder are, it’s sturdy, well made, and it’s definitely squirrel proof. I have a resident squirrel, and for the last few weeks he has been trying every day, on and off all day to try and get into this birdfeeder, and he’s given up. He has now taken to sitting on top of the fence just above where the feeder is positioned, staring at it twitching his tail as if it’s going to miraculously open. I don’t know if the squirrel thinks he’s Uri Geller, but those bars are not going to bend no matter how much he stares at them! The birds have got used to the cage, and today I have seen a robin, sparrows, bluetits, greattits, and coaltits all flitting in and out with ease. The blackbirds, starlings, and pigeons are all too big to get through the cage, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I can feed those separately if I wish. Now for the bad part. Like others have mentioned, the top of the feeder is ridiculous. It twists and releases too easily, and the same as the top bit that you take off to refill the feeder.
It twists off too easily, I tried it for an hour, and I found that on a windy day the feeder moves around and twist its self apart, so the entire bottom cage area just falls on the floor with all the food. So I have secured the top and the smaller top bit with wire, it cannot come apart now, and the squirrels cannot twist it off. I’ve gone on to buy two more of these feeders because they are so squirrel proof, but I really think the manufacturer should look at a better way of securing the tops on, not everybody has got wire to hand to be able to secure these feeders together.
This is the third I’ve had of this type of feeder, the other two being for peanuts and fat balls respectively. These feeders work in that they keep squirrels, magpies and crows at bay.
brought this feeder because the squirrels have destroyed most of the other ones I have had, had it a few days now seems to be working with the squirrels no problems YET. construction seems solid only minor issue is where the lid slots back on its a little bit flimsy other than that seems fine. the birds started feeding within minutes of me hanging it up so no issues there with the unusual perches hopefully will be squirrel prove for many months
good buy
ook the birds a couple of weeks to get used to it but now they use it all the time, and we are getting gold finches and tits which we weren’t before. Great! (and the larger birds cand get at the seed!!)
I’ve tried loads of different feeders, desperately trying to keep the little birds from being pushed out by the flock of starlings that swoop in and eat everything. This works really well and I’ve watched the little ones coming and going easily, sturdy and well made, the seed doesn’t fall everywhere with the slightest touch either, very pleased and would definitely recommend.
Needed a squirrel proof birdfeeder for sunflower seeds.
Previous feeder was described as squirrel proof-squirrels reached through the mesh and ate the food.
The squirrels gave this a go and gave up.
Note the food falls on the ground from the feeder.
It is easy to dismantle for cleaning-not so easy to reassemble!
It appears to be powder coated steel so should survive a few winters
I very rarely see a squirrel at home but it is doing the job I wanted at keeping the cheeky starlings at bay.
They have in fact given up and don’t go near the feeder anymore. The lids don’t lock tight as much as I would like, opening the smaller top lid often opens the larger bottom lid as well. I always place the feeder
down on a solid flat surface when refilling so as not to accidently drop on to the ground.
This is a very sturdy feeder which my goldfinches, tits and nutchatches love as the bigger birds can’t get at the sunflower hearts which I put in it. It’s a little tricky to dismantle and put back after cleaning.
When I put it together I found that the parts which secure the outer ring are flimsy .In addition there is a design fault in that when you turn the inner lid to close it after filling, it unhooks the outer ring and the whole lot comes adrift. I also found that larger birds trying to gain access can dislodge the outer ring and it all drops to the ground. All this was easily fixed by drilling a hole through the rim of the outer ring and inserting a self tapping screw. Now everything is solid and the whole unit works as it should. Perhaps the manufacturer could take note.
I already have one of these and it has survived three years so far with no sign of wearing out. It is squirrel proof and keeps out the big birds efficiently – they have the bird table. It is not rat proof but bringing it in at night sorts that issue. I tried to buy a second one but it arrived broken and had to be returned. Will buy again when the price is right. Highly recommended.
Great however the lid can be a bit loose and fall out if not hooked on correctly. brilliant at keeping the squirrels out. They can look but can’t get to the seed. Filled with sunflower seeds and the birds love it, although they did get a bit confused and peck at the seed through the plastic tube but they soon realised.
