The Story of Hotel Chocolat

Hotel Chocolat was founded in 2004 to make people happy. Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris built it on three unwavering pillars: authenticity, originality and ethics. One of the few chocolate makers to directly grow some of their own cacao, on their eco-conscious cacao farm in the grounds of their Saint Lucia hotel (yes, you can stay there too), they connect the world of sustainable cacao agriculture with the hedonism of top-quality chocolate. This makes them unique in the UK, and gives them an unrivalled understanding of what impacts the taste of their chocolate, right from the growing tree.
In 2006 they bought the 275-year-old Rabot Estate cacao farm in Saint Lucia, now home to the boutique Rabot Hotel. For over a decade they’ve been directly growing some of their own cacao on their organic estate, humbly learning the intricacies of every stage of the bean’s growth and the development of its flavours – from tree to bar – so that they can create chocolate with the best possible taste. In this way, and by working with cacao farmers around the world through their Engaged Ethics programme, they proudly connect the world of sustainable cacao agriculture with the hedonism of luxury chocolate.

I love this velvetiser! It is such an easy gadget to use and there is variety with hot chocolate and coffees etc. I find the drinks are not always pipping hot as I like them but overall very good.

My family (except myself) are big hot chocolate fans – especially my eldest son, and we seem to spend a small fortunate on takeaway hot chocolates. My wife especially, loves the black forrest. We had been toying with buying one for a few years but could never really bite on the bullet on the 110 it costs. But came across it on amazon, and was a pack that included the taster sachets and the porcelain mugs and could pay 22 over 5 months so seemed silly not to try it.
The hot chocolates from this machine are delicious. Just the right temperature to drink immediately and it really is silky and like velvet. Using the Hotel Chocolat sachets is fairy expensive (thought much cheaper than costa) but we actually only use half sachets for each as we bought a full sachet a little rich for our tastes. We have also bought just chocolate bars, like cadburys or Aero, grated them up and they work great too. You just need the full 35g worth as they aren’t concentrated like the HC official sachets.
I don’t really drink hot chocolate but I have been using this with Costa coffee powder from the supermarket and this makes a cracking at home silky brew.

So it is fairly expensive what what is effectively a milk frother but however it works it doesn’t make a difference and is you love hot chocolate and spend a lot of money on takeaways then this is worth a go and will pay for itself in the end.
Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. The machine was very simple to use but did come with easy to follow instructions. It was very quick and made the smoothest, velvety hot chocolate I have tasted. It came packaged with hot chocolate sachet’s and 2 beakers. Very very happy with this purchase.

I bought this on a whim, thinking I’ll use it for a week then get bored of it. I still love it and it is so versatile. I know it is slightly more pricey to other frothers, but it’s so well designed, easy to use and of high quality that it’s all worth the extra money. Works well with other hot chocolate powders too.

I really like the colour and design of the velvetiser. It looks great in my kitchen and the hot chocolate it makes is even better! I use a third to half of the sachets of chocolate flasks that came with the set and have bought some from other brands which work equally well. The chocolate is perfectly blended (unlike zapping it in the microwave) and I’ve used it to froth milk for coffees too. Plant and dairy milk work equally well. The machine is easy to use and to take apart when cleaning. Some comments say the drink doesn’t get very hot but that hasn’t been my experience at all, the temperature is just right. A real treat!

Amazing for hot chocolate love the 70 and 85%. I use it as a milk frother to make a latte or cappuccino too. Warm your cup first, it’s the perfect temperature for drinking straight away, but cools quickly if you leave it standing around for some time.

This is currently my favourite kitchen gadget. I love hot chocolate, and this makes it perfectly. It came with a pack of Hotel Chocolat sachets in different flavours, so you can use it as soon as it arrives. I won’t buy the sachets from now on, though, as they are too wasteful. I have bought pouches from HC, as well as chocolate curls and mini buttons (Callebaut) from Amazon, and they work just as well (use 35g or 1/3 cup of chocolate per drink). Pendragon also sell lovely flavours online. The only things I would improve would be to make the drinks a bit hotter, and to increase the capacity to 2 cups, but neither is a big deal. I fill the cup with boiling water whilst waiting for the drink, and that keeps it warm for longer. It also makes a very good turmeric latte.

You don’t have to use Hotel Chocolat flakes which are expensive. I am using Pendragon chocolate flakes which are available on Amazon and the taste is just as good as Hotel Chocolat but significantly cheaper.
Using chocolate flakes means there is no powder build up at the bottom of the cup.
The Velvetiser is very easy to use. Just fill with milk to the marker line. Put in about 5-6 teaspoonfuls of chocolate flakes. Turn on and wait a couple of minutes then pour our great tasting hot chocolate.
Cleaning only takes a few seconds rinsing the inside of the Velvetiser out with some water and a quick wipe with a cloth. The agitator only takes a few seconds to clean too.
Well worth the expense!!

Just as quick to clean out as use, the non stick coating ensures fast cleaning ready for tomorrow’s use.
Not cheap considering what it does, but worth it as the quality is high, and gets used regularly in our house.
Ours came with 2 cups which are size matched to the amount the machine will make, and a selection of different chocolate sachets to try and I thought the milk chocolate would be our favourite, but was very surprised to find the 70% dark to be the best flavour and we don’t even normally like dark chocolate, yet alone one with a high cocoa content! So you might be surprised to find out the same.
Apparently, the 70% dark is the most popular seller according to Hotel Chocolate, so other people must think the same too.
If you love hot chocolate this is a must have.
So I have heard good things about this hot chocolate maker….and well seeing as pubs, restaurants and cafes are closed I seem to be saving a fortune so I decided to splash out on a little bit of luxury.
And it is worth every penny! The hot chocolate you get from this machine rivals any coffee chain- its smooth, not too sweet, the velvetister heats the chocolate to a perfect temp too!
So far I’ve tried the chocolates that came with the box (mixed selection with dark, milky, salted caramel and hazelnut) and I also bought a pack of the chilli hot chocolate and raspberry and white chocolate- and so far for me these have all been big hits!
The chocolate for this machine is a little on the expensive side- 12 for 10 servings but its not really an every day treat. But its well worth it.

I’m very tight fisted and would normally scoff at the idea of spending 100 on a glorified milk frother but it’s so worth it. Firstly, you do get two mugs and a selection of hot chocolate with it too. Secondly, the ease of using this thing is just fantastic; put your milk and chocolate in and press go – 2 minutes later you have beautiful smooth hot chocolate at the perfect drinking temperature. You can warm the mug first which does make it a little hotter if you like really hot drinks, but for most people I think it’s perfect straight out of the machine. Thirdly, it’s so easy to clean! I usually avoid kitchen gadgets because they’re so fiddly but this is no trouble at all – just wipe with a sponge, rinse and you’re done. For a deeper clean you can just put some water in and press go.
I wouldn’t have bought this if my mum hadn’t kept telling me how much she loves hers. I’m so glad I did because it’s amazing.

Personally I think the branded ingredients are a bit steep and once or twice I’ve grated some Galaxy whatever and the results are just the same, but to be honest that’s a right faff- it’s a balance between cost and convenience, but don’t let that put you off purchasing this excellent device.
Excellent machine and so easy to use. Me and my wife have experimented using different kinds of chocolate. Her personal favourite was Cadbury orange twirl
Good hot chocolate maker and easy to clean. Not sure it’s worth the asking price though. A Nespresso areoccino can be picked up for around 50 and do a similar job using its stirrer attachment (or frother if you want foam).
A bit tricky to clean but makes a lovely hot chocolate
The only pity is that it can make just one cup at a time. The company recommends not grating your own chocolate because the flakes might be too big and burn the motor out, but I’ve grated my own (checking the size of flakes) and not had a problem.
I bought this for my wife’s birthday, sh absolutely loves it. She is a chocoholic and enjoys good quality chocolate not the cheap brands you get on the high street. Hotel Chocolate are her favourite brand, the Velvetiser doesn’t disappoint.

Bonus is it is a cinch to clean, fill to normal level with water and a drop of washing up liquid, run the cycle, rince and it’s done.

Very good product bought as a Christmas present for daughter in law who absolutely loves it.
Looks classy and has a small footprint so stays on my worktop ready for use.
I have used the sachets of chocolate that came with it but found them all to taste the same.
I have experimented with them by using half the recommended sachet and using a spoon of cheaper powdered chocolate – of which I have four large tubs to use up.
The machine came with two mugs – no handles – so not good for my hands, and the machine only makes enough for one cup at a time, so that was a bit of a disappointment.
I always heat up my mug as I prefer my drink piping hot and the machine does not make it hot enough for me.
I also prefer my chocolate drinks sweet so add a teaspoon of honey and a drop of cream – lovely.
Nice machine, easy to use, just add milk, chocolate, press a button away it goes. Wash and wipe with soft soapy cloth rinse and ready for next time.
