The Story of Hotel Chocolat
Tree to Bar
Hotel Chocolat was founded in 2004 to make people happy. Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris built it on three unwavering pillars: authenticity, originality and ethics. One of the few chocolate makers to directly grow some of their own cacao, on their eco-conscious cacao farm in the grounds of their Saint Lucia hotel (yes, you can stay there too), they connect the world of sustainable cacao agriculture with the hedonism of top-quality chocolate. This makes them unique in the UK, and gives them an unrivalled understanding of what impacts the taste of their chocolate, right from the growing tree.
In 2006 they bought the 275-year-old Rabot Estate cacao farm in Saint Lucia, now home to the boutique Rabot Hotel. For over a decade they’ve been directly growing some of their own cacao on their organic estate, humbly learning the intricacies of every stage of the bean’s growth and the development of its flavours – from tree to bar – so that they can create chocolate with the best possible taste. I was sceptical at the price (even on special offer) but this is great. I like the Callebaut hot chocolate better than the official one. Also make a nice frothy coffee in it with coffee powder, half milk and half water.

Hot chocolate heaven.
A great piece of kit can’t believe how many hot chocolates we have had since buying. It’s like heaven in a hot chocolate. The only one bad point is sometimes the lid keep popping off when it warms up. The two cups are great too and the variety of hot chocolate sachets you get are good too to try, we wouldn’t recommend the ginger ones we hated it.

Beautiful hot chocolate
Nice and easy hot chocolate made with granules, either bought in or just buy a bar of chocolate and make your own granules. It’s helped slow down my alcohol intake as rather than drink a ‘few’ beers I look forward to a nice cup of hot chocolate in the evening before bed. Easy to clean too, literally takes 2 minutes.

A must have for chocoholics
I really like the colour and design of the velvetiser. It looks great in my kitchen and the hot chocolate it makes is even better! I use a third to half of the sachets of chocolate flasks that came with the set and have bought some from other brands which work equally well. The chocolate is perfectly blended (unlike zapping it in the microwave) and I’ve used it to froth milk for coffees too. Plant and dairy milk work equally well. The machine is easy to use and to take apart when cleaning. Some comments say the drink doesn’t get very hot but that hasn’t been my experience at all, the temperature is just right. A real treat!

Amazing for hot chocolate love the 70 and 85%. I use it as a milk frother to make a latte or cappuccino too. Warm your cup first, it’s the perfect temperature for drinking straight away, but cools quickly if you leave it standing around for some time.

I love this!
This is currently my favourite kitchen gadget. I love hot chocolate, and this makes it perfectly. It came with a pack of Hotel Chocolat sachets in different flavours, so you can use it as soon as it arrives. I won’t buy the sachets from now on, though, as they are too wasteful. I have bought pouches from HC, as well as chocolate curls and mini buttons (Callebaut) from Amazon, and they work just as well (use 35g or 1/3 cup of chocolate per drink). Pendragon also sell lovely flavours online. The only things I would improve would be to make the drinks a bit hotter, and to increase the capacity to 2 cups, but neither is a big deal. I fill the cup with boiling water whilst waiting for the drink, and that keeps it warm for longer. It also makes a very good turmeric latte.

I love this hot chocolate maker. It may be expensive but it makes the best hot chocolate I have tasted.
You don’t have to use Hotel Chocolat flakes which are expensive. I am using Pendragon chocolate flakes which are available on Amazon and the taste is just as good as Hotel Chocolat but significantly cheaper.
Using chocolate flakes means there is no powder build up at the bottom of the cup.
The Velvetiser is very easy to use. Just fill with milk to the marker line. Put in about 5-6 teaspoonfuls of chocolate flakes. Turn on and wait a couple of minutes then pour our great tasting hot chocolate.
Cleaning only takes a few seconds rinsing the inside of the Velvetiser out with some water and a quick wipe with a cloth. The agitator only takes a few seconds to clean too.
Well worth the expense!!

Makes really lovely hot chocolate that is well balanced and has an excellent consistency. Very easy to set up and use.
The only minor caveat would be cleaning the Velvetiser, with some of the chocolate being harder to remove from the whisker.

This looks lovely – well made, sleek and stylish. Easy to set up and clean.
However, we have found that 1 cycle isn’t long enough to heat and blend and have to run it again – sometimes twice more. Having said that, once it’s finished properly the blending is superb and the temperature perfect.
Well worth the money
This makes amazing hot chocolate. No more boiling milk in the microwave for me! The sachet selection pack is great as there are lots of different flavours to try, but to be honest it’s cheaper to buy a pot of charbonnel et Walker and use that. It’s the same type flakes as the sachet so fine (in my opinion) to use in the velvetiser. To clean you just fill with soapy water and turn on. It takes 220ml of milk so I freeze pots with that amount in and then just take them out the freezer that morning for an evening treat! You can definitely taste the difference, it’s smoother and frothier.

Not cheap for what it is, but then it does a simple thing perfectly, every time, also really easy to clean, fantastic product. Recommend buying the cheaper bulk options for choc though, sachets are mega expensive – even if nice – but they even say that in the ‘paper’ you get with product. Cannot fault. What do you buy for the person who has everything? Well, this will do very nicely. The Velvetiser arrived well packaged with simple, straightforward instructions. My son who is lactose intolerant thoroughly enjoyed the salted caramel flavour using oat milk, I used almond milk and have enjoyed the chilli and ginger chocolate and my daughter the mint chocolate. Literally the best hot chocolate. I’ve also used the Callebaut callets (35g) which I add once the milk had been in for 30 seconds. Also a delicious, more budget conscious alternative. Definitely recommended for chocolate lovers or those who crave another level of comfort every now and then.

Posh hot chocolate in a few minutes at home
Bought as a present for my wife, who loves it. The supplied hot chocolates cover a wide spectrum, so there’ll be some that you like and some that you don’t, but I can (almost) guarantee that your perfect hot chocolate is in there somewhere. For her it was the milk chocolate and my daughter loves the salted caramel, personally the darker ones are for me, but we all love it. You can even use it with a grated chocolate of your choosing if you want, but most chocolate bars are a little too sweet, so we’re sticking to the Hotel Chocolat ones. Recommended to anyone who loves a smooth hot chocolate.
So easy to use, perfect creamy hot chocolate every time. Fill with milk to the fill line, add your grated chocolate – use the Hotel Chocolate sachets or around 3-5 tea spoons of your preferred chocolate (depending on individual taste) put the lid on and press the on/off button. Around 2mins 20 seconds later it switches itself off when it’s reached the preset temperature and it’s ready to pour. Suitable for left or right handed people it has pour indents on both sides which is good, and is cordless from the base like most kettles are nowadays.
Just as quick to clean out as use, the non stick coating ensures fast cleaning ready for tomorrow’s use.
Not cheap considering what it does, but worth it as the quality is high, and gets used regularly in our house.
Ours came with 2 cups which are size matched to the amount the machine will make, and a selection of different chocolate sachets to try and I thought the milk chocolate would be our favourite, but was very surprised to find the 70% dark to be the best flavour and we don’t even normally like dark chocolate, yet alone one with a high cocoa content! So you might be surprised to find out the same.
Apparently, the 70% dark is the most popular seller according to Hotel Chocolate, so other people must think the same too.
If you love hot chocolate this is a must have.
I do occasionally like to treat myself to a nice hot chocolate from time to time……and well with lockdown I’ve not been able to have some of my favourite treats!
So I have heard good things about this hot chocolate maker….and well seeing as pubs, restaurants and cafes are closed I seem to be saving a fortune so I decided to splash out on a little bit of luxury.
And it is worth every penny! The hot chocolate you get from this machine rivals any coffee chain- its smooth, not too sweet, the velvetister heats the chocolate to a perfect temp too!
So far I’ve tried the chocolates that came with the box (mixed selection with dark, milky, salted caramel and hazelnut) and I also bought a pack of the chilli hot chocolate and raspberry and white chocolate- and so far for me these have all been big hits!
The chocolate for this machine is a little on the expensive side- 12 for 10 servings but its not really an every day treat. But its well worth it.

Oh my goodness… This is wonderful.
I’m very tight fisted and would normally scoff at the idea of spending 100 on a glorified milk frother but it’s so worth it. Firstly, you do get two mugs and a selection of hot chocolate with it too. Secondly, the ease of using this thing is just fantastic; put your milk and chocolate in and press go – 2 minutes later you have beautiful smooth hot chocolate at the perfect drinking temperature. You can warm the mug first which does make it a little hotter if you like really hot drinks, but for most people I think it’s perfect straight out of the machine. Thirdly, it’s so easy to clean! I usually avoid kitchen gadgets because they’re so fiddly but this is no trouble at all – just wipe with a sponge, rinse and you’re done. For a deeper clean you can just put some water in and press go.
I wouldn’t have bought this if my mum hadn’t kept telling me how much she loves hers. I’m so glad I did because it’s amazing.

I’ve got it as a present for the women’s day and was really happy to have it during the quarantine to be able to feel this reach and addictive taste of the hot chocolate. It does amazing job, sooo easy to use and amazingly easy to clean. My favorite flavor is Original and my Husband fell in love with Hazelnut one. It really tastes like directly from the Hotel Chocolate Cafe shop!)

Personally I think the branded ingredients are a bit steep and once or twice I’ve grated some Galaxy whatever and the results are just the same, but to be honest that’s a right faff- it’s a balance between cost and convenience, but don’t let that put you off purchasing this excellent device.

Good hot chocolate maker and easy to clean. Not sure it’s worth the asking price though. A Nespresso areoccino can be picked up for around 50 and do a similar job using its stirrer attachment (or frother if you want foam).

The only pity is that it can make just one cup at a time. The company recommends not grating your own chocolate because the flakes might be too big and burn the motor out, but I’ve grated my own (checking the size of flakes) and not had a problem.

I love this. It seems like a very expensive whisk, but it’s worth every penny. The hot chocolate it makes is smooth and creamy, perfect temperature (I always put boiling water in the ceramic cup beforehand to avoid heat loss) and saves me money in coffee shop hot chocolate. Some reviews say it’s not hot enough but I disagree, it’s just right for drinking. The machine itself looks great – I have the copper one and I would highly recommend. I use the 70% chocolate but the milky 50% is really good too.

Love this gadget. I use it every morning to make my breakfast cocoa. Don’t worry about buying the expensive chocolate sachets. Fill up to line with milk, add sugar and cocoa powder and two minutes later you have a perfect cup of hot chocolate! I only like a half teaspoon of sugar so I avoid hot chocolate powder as it is always too sweet.
Bonus is it is a cinch to clean, fill to normal level with water and a drop of washing up liquid, run the cycle, rince and it’s done.

Ok it’s pricier than others on the market, however it’s a beautiful piece of machinery to both use and look at. And the accompanying cups are exquisite. It’s fast, easy to use. Works with other non Hotel Chocolat chocolate (as well as non dairy milks), and people will talk about it.
I like to whisk the chocolate twice to get it extra creamy. My nephews, who are notoriously fussy, loved the hot chocolate so that’s a Seal of Approval right there

You get a taster box of six different chocolate sachets 2 of each included as well as two cups ( not suitable for people who struggle to grip without a handle). it’s made from real grated chocolate and not powder so you know it’s going to be a rich indulgent drink. The temperature is just right as hot chocolate isn’t meant to be really hot.

I’m not a milk drinker but I do love the frothy milky hot chocolate that the velvetiser produces and the different flavours available to try. Highly recommend this gorgeous looking gadget. Takes pride of place on the worktop.

Makes absolutely amazing hot chocolate. We’ve used Hotel Chocolat’s own got chocolate but we’ve tried (successfully) grating down different flavours of Lindor chocolate and they have come out just as delicious. Bought as a Christmas present for my partner (admittedly for me too but won’t tell him that) and he has said it’s the best gift he’s ever gotten.

One word to describe the velvetiser FANTASTIC never tasted hot chocolate like it if you like a hot chocolate in a coffee shop this is the product for you it maybe a little pricey but well worth it if you use everyday the machine is easy to clean by wiping with a damp cloth the lid and wisk can go in dishwasher the machine uses hotel chocolat sashets made with real chocolate the machine is easy to use just switch on our milk of your choice to fill level add the chocolate and watch the machine wisk together for a smooth hot chocolate it takes approximately 2minutes for the hot chocolate to be ready and the temperature is just righ

Fantastic product, there is nothing else like it on the market. It may be quite expensive but it’s well worth the money & would definitely aty recommend to anyone. Makes gorgeous hot chocolate drinks.
Expensive for what is essentially an electric kettle with a removeable whisk but I decided to give this a go.
Looks classy and has a small footprint so stays on my worktop ready for use.
I have used the sachets of chocolate that came with it but found them all to taste the same.
I have experimented with them by using half the recommended sachet and using a spoon of cheaper powdered chocolate – of which I have four large tubs to use up.
The machine came with two mugs – no handles – so not good for my hands, and the machine only makes enough for one cup at a time, so that was a bit of a disappointment.
I always heat up my mug as I prefer my drink piping hot and the machine does not make it hot enough for me.
I also prefer my chocolate drinks sweet so add a teaspoon of honey and a drop of cream – lovely.
Nice machine, easy to use, just add milk, chocolate, press a button away it goes. Wash and wipe with soft soapy cloth rinse and ready for next time.
I can’t praise this product highly enough, it’s perfect. Easy to use, easy to clean, beautiful to look at and makes the most perfect hot chocolate. I’ve been looking for and failing to find a quality at home hot chocolate machine for a long time and finally this is it. I only use the Hotel Chocolat flakes in it which work out at 1.20ish per serving, good value for the quality and taste and plenty of flavours available, online or in store.
