Happy with my purchase (the first one had a fault but Amazon collected/replaced next day, no fuss). It is a little cumbersome by its very nature on an extending pole, physics of leverage say so! Am going to extend my Ryobi ONE+ range as you save on chargers & batteries every time you buy an additional piece of kit!

Good cutting but heavy. You find your arms aching after a while and im young and strong so wouldn’t recommend if you’re slight. The strap offers little comfort as where it clips is to close to the handle so doesn’t provide the leverage required.

Reasonable product but it is really heavy and quite awkward to use in certain positions, I’m not sure how much use it will get simply because of the weight.

Well made and cuts well, but it is not very light. 20 minutes of overhead hedge cutting is enough for me to need a rest. With the extension pole fitted cutting requires a good deal of upper body strength and is very taxing. Learn to use it to suit your personal ability and it’s a great tool. Battery life is good.

here light weight until to put long reach all together then there are on heavy side but i use mine without mid bar and so easy to use battery last long time but i have put an 4amp in it i have cut black thorn to pivot with it can be a little rattly on hard hedges but what a tool it is also in the box you get a sweeper in it and that’s very handy this is one of the best cutters i brought to be fai

Very good tool and strong cuts clean and easy, the only down side is it is quite heavy at its full extension
Otherwise no problem if you have a large hedge probably best to get a larger battery if working hard battery like reduces quickly I already had a four hour battery and this coped much better for my large hedge.

I used this item to cut the high side of a Lawson Cyprus hedge. It worked very well, but remember the longer the reach the heavier it will feel with a bit of flexing. But very impressed with battery life and cutting ability overall I rate this as a worth while purchase.

Very pleased with this Ryobi tool – effective and easy to use hedgecutter. The only issue is the weight which can be a bit of a burden after a while, but it is ideal for my hedge length. So probably worth sticking to the 2 or 2.5 battery capacity as you may not actually keep going for an hour or more without a break.

This tool is great for tall hedges and saves messing around with platforms/ladders and mains cables which get in the way and can be cut 🙁 . It is heavy in it’s extended form but does a great job cutting the hedge so if you can live with that I can recommend it. It comes with a shoulder strap which helps supporting the weight.

Great tool I am able to cut my large hedge from a distance with the extension, this means no irritation from pollen etc. With the extension it feels a bit too flexible and very top heavy but personally I’m so happy I bought it… No cables!!!!

Uses very little power. Slightly cumbersome. Could be a bit shorter. Not much good for close up trimming due to it’s fixed length. Over all though, still a decent product for the price.

Purchased in order to trim several large bushes plus a very large laurel hedge. As previous reviews a reasonable degree of upper body strength is required especially when extended as motor weight is at the top of the pole. Would recommend several short sessions to gain confidence in handling. Inadvisable to consider if physically unfit. Battery adequate as 1 hour use is tiring. Motor/Cutter does its job.

Makes cutting a tall hedge without using a ladder. The weight could be a problem for some but the strap provided helps a lot. I can now reach all parts of the hedge. The cutting blades are very sharp cut cleanly.

Hi, this tool arrived a day earlier than I expected, I put it together after coming home from work, it was effortless, and easy to do, can’t wait to try it out at the weekend to cut through the leyandaii, fells lightweight to me and quite a fast speed, the blades are quite sharp, I also like the hedge sweep attachment, I will write another review when I’ve used it, I’m sure it will perform as good as all my other ryobi products, once again I thank both ryobi and amazon, for bringing me t his wonderful tool.

Easy to follow instructions, and put together.
On full extension it was a bit heavy at times, but I guess that’s understandable with something that reaches up quite far. Only used once so far, was concentrating so much on trimming the top of my Laurel hedge that I inadvertently fell off the edge of my raised decking onto the garden below. Don’t worry the trimmer survived and so did I.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersEarly days but here’s what I think…

As other mention it is fairly heavy. But that’s what you would assume unless it was 1k and make for carbon fibre. It is a relatively cheap tool which has to be robust enough to do a job. I believe taking and managing the weight is key. Use the strap across your body onto your opposite shoulder and house the base against your leg / groin and its not too bad at all.
Build wise I think it’s OK. Again it’s fairly cheap so don’t expect Dewalt / Makita etc quality. For instance I think the adjustable joint on the head is a little baggy and has more movement in it than I would like. But not a massive issue. Feels fairly solid overall but shear length creates instability.
Design is fairly nice but I think the weight could be distributed better. For example maybe the trigger for the power could be a little higher with more weight behind the handle. But again all about how you manage the weight.
Battery life with the standard battery in pack is decent to say it cuts as well as my corded clippers. Did a big conifer row and half a big privet before needing a charge. Prob about half hour of continual use. Fairly good I thought with power output given.
All in all its a very useful tool and I like it. Its pretty much made for areas that are hard to reach or so you don’t have to use a hop up / ladder. So for close stuff like at ground level it’s cumbersome and your better off with standard clippers. As in pic my drive slopes away loads so this kinda tool is great so I don’t have to prat about with ladders on an angle ! I recommend it for the price. And will probably invest in some more Ryobi One tools.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tool if you manage the weight correctly

Could use a bigger heavier battery, just for length of use, and to balance better, it is really top heavy, I’m a strong bloke and after a long time using (lots of tall wide hedges) you do feel it, it aches!

I bought the bare tool as I have the drill starter set, though I had the 2.0ah batteries. Was gutted to realise I only had the 1.3ah batteries, so I thought it only gonna last 10minutes.
I did the whole driveway hedge, the conifers along two sides of the back yard and also a large bush that had gotten out of hand.
Battery literally died with only about one more foot of hedge to go.
Really impressed with it so I’m going to invest in a 4ah or 5ah battery

Don’t normally do a review but for this piece of kit I felt I should. I had a 40ft long, 20 foot high hedge to trim and jumped in and bought this to have a go myself as I would normally get a Gardner type company to come and do it for me. Glad I didn’t. It’s simple to put together and use but it’s heavy as the motor for the trimmer is by the blade and despite not having an O’Level in physics, I could work out it gets heavy when using at reach. I also got the 5.0a battery as it needs a good bit of power to get the whole hedge done. The battery charged in an hour and used 3/4 of its charge doing the whole hedge.

I would say I was a bit hesitant to put too much pressure on the whole thing when using the extension tube as it does ‘bow’ a fair bit so only used it almost vertical at full extension. I’d recommend this product if it is bought with the more powerful battery.

  70. Wendy Lohr says:

Really pleased with this. The reach is great although it feels heavier with the extension on, it’s still a lot lighter than my petrol equivalent. Battery last really well, you have to buy a separate battery so a smaller battery is lighter but doesn’t last for so long. Quick to charge in the right charger. It made a good job cutting a massive elder hedge so plenty of power. Not fuss to put it together (unlike the petrol one) or put away.

It’s a bit top-heavy and there’s no handle at that end so you end up gripping the connector to balance the weight. Using it with the extension is tiring on the arms. I own many ryobi one tools, so familiar with the quality. This was one heavy tool and I’m 6 foot tall and 16 stone. I’m not weak…. With one section removed it was ok, but balancing on a ladder with the second pole installed it was difficult to use. However the battery life was great. I used a single 5 amp pack for most of the day, amazing. Would be great, if you could use it just as a hedge trimmer, without using the pole(s)

  87. Christian Wischofsky says:

It’s great, cuts through a big old laurel bush and conifer bush easily but, it’s heavy. I’m 41, quite fit, but it needs a proper handle on the extended pole. In full extended pole mode it’s really high, great, but too heavy as I suspect most pole trimmers are. The position of the on buttons is also not very ergonomic for me. Although once you have it going you only need to hold down one of the 2 buttons/switches. Hand starts hurting after 10-15 mins.

I can do 10-15 mins then need to rest the arm and shoulder muscles. It’s like anything you hold up above waste height, it gets to you after a bit.
It’s is however much cheaper than the 350 I was quoted for someone to do my hedges for me and I’m happy to do it in a few goes as the green bin gets full quickly and is only collected once a fortnight.

Overall, if you need an extender pole trimmer, it’s pretty good. Just an additional handle and buttons in a better place would have gotten it 5 stars.

I love this hedge cutter cut 3 feet of my over grown hedge like a hot knife through butter, you need the strap really as it is not very heavy but the length makes it so (gravity) after 30 mins my shoulders got a real good work out but I am 50 and not seen a gym in 10 years. I was a bit sceptical that an 18v hedge cutter could be this good. For years I’ve used petrol or electric cutters but when the price dropped I thought I’d give it a go as I already have batteries and chargers from the Ryobi range.
First it feels well designed. Rugged and strong but not too heavy. It’s made of quality plastics and the pole looks as though it’s grp.
The removable extension and pivoting head makes this really versatile. I used a 2.5ah battery and I was able to cut both sides and the top of a head height, 30 metre long hedge on the one battery 🙂
The pivoting head also bends partly the opposite way (to about 30/40) so you can go along the side of the hedge sweeping up and down as you walk. You could even use it to cut long grass like a strimmer!
It’s quite quiet too. Much quieter and lighter than a petrol hedge cutter and my arms don’t give up halfway through!
Really impressed with how strong the 18v battery and motor is, if you keep the blades sharp and well oiled this thing is as good as a petrol cutter.
My only criticism, if I have one is the balance of the tool and the ease of adjustment of the shoulder strap. The strap is heavy duty but I haven’t yet found a comfortable position. It may help using a 5ah battery or moving the forward strap anchor point along the pole (the rear is fixed). I’ve had to thread the strap buckle through the rubber shoulder pad to shorten it. Needs more though. I think Ryobi could come up with a simpler adjustment you could do while the strap is over your shoulder rather than having to take it off several times to get the correct length.
Don’t let that put you off though, this is an awesome tool. Cutting the hedge is now quite enjoyable!
btw, Hermes lost my original order (how can you lose a hedge cutter?) an online chat with Amazon customer service sorted the problem and DPD delivered two days later. Why do Amazon bother with Hermes?

I use it for shaping large shrubs- not only does it work well once you are used to it- it is great fun, almost addictive to use!
