Amazon Basics 19-Inch (48 cm) Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel

Safe travels

Whether it’s an adorable Yorkie or a graceful tabby, conveniently get your furry friend from point A to point B with this Amazon Basics pet kennel. Designed to keep your pet safe, secure, and comfortable when travelling, the 23-inch (58 cm) kennel works well for anything from trips to the dog park or hiking trails to routine visits to the vet.

Smart 2-door design

Thoughtfully designed, the pet kennel features two doors, one in the front and one on the top, which means twice as many options compared to most kennels for getting little fluffy calmly into her kennel. Easy entry helps promote a less stressful experience – for both you and your pet.

Convenient features

For added convenience, the top door can be opened to the left or right. Simply pull one of the two black handles forward to release, then lift and swing to the side to open the door. The door on the front of the kennel features a spring-loaded latch. Pinching together the top and bottom levers of the latch and pulling forward allows the door to gently swing open.

Heavy-duty design

Made of durable plastic with a steel-wire front door, the Amazon Basics two-door top-load pet kennel offers strength, security, and visibility, along with plenty of ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the kennel.

Good sturdy cat carrier. Need this robustness for my ragdolls! Stores as two halves inside eachother and quick to construct.

It was really easy to assemble and is extremely secure. I bought this for my cat, he’d never been in a box before. This product made it so easy to get him used to it, it’s nice a big he can stand up and move about easily. Would definitely recommend.

Really nice box just wish I’d of gone larger but with people putting cats and small dogs thought it would be plenty big enough for a 16 wk old kitten but maybe last him a month

    A little small

This is an excellent cat carrier which meets my needs when having to take a poorly kitty to the vets. The two-way opening allows me to easily drop the cat in from the top, then to let her walk out from the front. It has no bells and whistles, and is good and comfortable for its intended use.

It was perfect for one of my chickens who was brooding. Overnight stays in the box with her own food and water broke the cycle. Keeping for the next one.

The heavy screws make it sturdier but less lightweight. Happy though because had issues with other carriers coming apart before, and I’m confident that won’t happen with this one. Pleased with the top opening, and it’s secure enough to contain my cat safely. My cat is small and fits in it comfortably. Good value.

This is so much better than I expected it to be. Bought it to replace the plastic carrier for one of my cats as it had broken, think I shall be buying another of these for my other cat as it is just so much better. Very sturdy – the two halves are screwed together – and I especially like the strong metal door. Easy to assemble as well, screws we’re a bit fiddly and the picture instructions could have used some words as well as I’m not great without them! Otherwise so impressed, I’d never bought Amazon brand before but I definitely will agai

Arrived quickly, very simple to put together, you can do most of it by hand, just need a screwdriver to tighten the bolts holding top to bottom. Looked a little small but is ample size for my biggest kitty who is very long. Easy to open front door and top loading door, and the holes in the sides and door are small so you won’t get an angry paw coming out to scratch you. Is also lightweight and sturdy even with a cat inside it.

Have received this today and the quality is very good for the price. It is smallish….but I feel my cat will feel more secure in this as the old carrier was too big and the poor old boy was slipping all over the place. With it opening at the top as well, you can lower them in facing the door. Those top locks are quite secure too, also the door locks are too.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersSturdy, secure, easy to assemble, lightweight to carry.

It’s my first time needing a carrier for my rabbits. It’s their first vet trip. I read a wonderfully helpfully review of this carrier, from somebody mentioning she liked the bolt feature (something I hadn’t considered to be a feature to look out for). She mentioned it adds extra security if the side clips fail or break. After reading reviews of other carriers, people mentioned the clips broke or the bottom fell off in transit and the animal fell out. So, it was a big reason I purchased this carrier, because the top and bottom can also be bolted with metal screws and not just rely on the plastic clips to hold them together. However, when assembling the carrier, the screw went in fine, but I struggled to attach the washer on the other end, it was fiddly, no helpful tool supplied to do it and I couldn’t tighten them fully with my fingers. In the end, I just used black cable ties instead of the screw bolts. Easier when dissembling for storage that way, just cut the ties instead of fiddling with a bunch of six screws.

I’m pleased it can open from the top via the handle, or from the front cage entrance. The gate felt thick, rather than thin wire. The clasp feature to lock it felt very secure. I feel the rabbits will be safe and secure and can’t escape, God-willing!

I bought the small 19″ size because it won’t be used often, or for long journeys (vets is 10min drive away). My rabbit is the size of a small-medium cat/dog. He is a fully grown Lop rabbit, 18mth old (not dwarf or mini). In my opinion, This carrier will be suitable for a medium sized adult rabbit, or a small-medium cat. I don’t think it’s suitable for an animal of this size for a long journey over 30-45min long, as there isn’t too much space for stretching/sprawling out, or standing on hind legs. If the animal is returning from vet treatment and needing to lay/rest with minimal movement, then it’s ideal. It will also be fine for short journeys, if the animal has had exercise time prior to entering the carrier, they’ll likely stay still and sleep. For a long, lengthy journey, or for a larger cat/dog/rabbit etc, I’d suggest buying the bigger size option.

Very happy with this purchase. The price was very good compared to some options that didn’t appear to be as good. My only regret is not buying the larger size, just incase I ever want to do a long journey with them (I should of thought that through better!) at least it will be easy for storage and also, the bottom section of the carrier can be used as a spare litter tray when not used for the carrier feature (yes, for those who don’t own rabbits, they can be litter trained like cats).

Pretty good carrier. I expected “Amazon Basics” to mean adequate but not great, but in fact it is great. Sturdy, upper and lower attached by swing clips but nuts and bolts are provided if you’re paranoid about premature carrier separation. Front door and top door for convenience. Recommended.

Perfect crate for small animals, particularly if they’re houdinis as the top opening is perfect for them to be put into.
Smaller than I expected and only really suitable for small cats/kittens. Our 3kg cat is slightly too big for it.

My crate didn’t come with screws to secure the two halfs together, which although is perfectly sturdy without, screws would of made it feel safer.

Good price for a decent size carry box. Took no more than 10 minutes to put it all together. Instructions were a little unclear on one of the steps but didn’t really need to use them anyway. Box is very sturdy once bolted together and fairly lightweight considering the size of it.

Bought this to transport a medium sized rabbit and it is perfect. It is slightly heavier one end due to the metal door. The animal is happy to walk in and my daughter likes to take the whole lid off to lift it back out. Easy to use, easy to take lid off and easy to put back together. All in all we are very pleased with it.

I haven’t used it yet for my cat, but it looks good and it is useful to be able to open it either on top or at one end. The fastenings seem secure. The one drawback is that the instructions for putting it together are pretty incomprehensible. It looks as if the top goes on first, but in fact the door has to fitted before you put on the top.

Great box. Good option available to insert screw fixtures (included) to join the top and bottom together which makes it very secure. Secure metal door with good locking mechanism. Love this pet carrier for my new cat, its so sturdy and great quality for a really competitive price! I also love the way the roof of it is openable too. You only need to pull the clips back horizontally to release the catch and pull the door up to open it. I totally recommend this!

I like this carrier a lot, but it is not suitable for small furries like ferrets or guinea pigs as the notches on the base part at the front opening are just the right/wrong size to trap little feet and legs ( this is why only 4 stars). For animals with bigger legs/ankles/feet, it is safe and very good quality for the money. My 3kg rabbit fits in comfortably for a trip to the vet. I think I would go for the 23 inch version for anything bigger. The top opening means that your pet can stay in the carrier feeling safe while a vet can have a quick prod or do a vaccination.

One day one of our kittens closed the door on the other one during the night, luckily because of the way the mechanism works the kitten could lock the other one in and they were able to get ou

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI had purchased this carrier to have on standby for if one of my cats ever required a trip to the vet. Call me mystic meg, cause no less than a week later I had to call it into action.

The most important aspect of any carrier I use, is how secure it feels. This carrier is assembled using clasps on the side and then secured by bolts. Although this is quite fiddly, I didn’t mind as it certainly added to the security and sturdiness.

I have a quite petite cat yet found the front door entrance a little small. Of course this can be quite subjective as I had one of the those cats that detests being placed in a carrier and can therefore magically increase in mass threefold at the sight of one. I therefore opted for the top loading door. Unfortunately, this didn’t work out as planned, as it’s not very easy to close and once the cat was placed inside she promptly jail broke out before I could close the awkward plastic bolts that it has. The only option I had was to place the carrier in an upright position and place her in the front door backwards. Once inside though, I felt she was safe and secure. Which again, to me is paramount.

Good case and great price. A bit difficult to fit it. And the case not to smooth, the cat hand easy to hold on it. The door can open from the top and side which make it easy to access.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBought smaller size for 4 month old kittens. Only suitable for one for transportation purposes really but they’ll happily squeeze in together at home and seem to be using it as a bed regularly! I don’t think this would do for a full grown cat unless they like crouching in small spaces. Didn’t have the problem with the lid coming off like some people did. Feels sturdy to me. Bit fiddly to assemble but didn’t take long. Couldn’t find better for the price.

My cat was litterally not having being put in a box to go to the vets, his 6yrs old and very strong lad at about 6.5-7kg, he broke the cheaply made box i got from Pets at Home within a few minutes, so i needed something stronger and also something he can sleep in so it had to be decent size. After reading so many reviews and searching so many different types of cat travel carriers.. i came across this one and because of the positive reviews and spec i decided to buy one and i must say it very study and made very well. It comes with nuts and bolts to hold down the strongest of cats (which you dont really need for small cats imo).

My cat loved it and walked straight into it as soon as i put his sleeping mat into it.

    Overall a 5* buy.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have 4 cats and bigger carriers but needed a smaller single cat carrier. This was smaller than I anticipated but perfectly adequate for 1 cat. The two halves screw together so that it is not a quick unclip to release the top half from the bottom half to dismantle if you want to. The photo looks like there are the clip type fittings on the sides but that is just a design feature rather than a release. There is a strong metal front gate which is very secure and there is also a separate top opening. Nice small neat carrier. Deducted 1 star simply for the screw fittings …. which I know will be lost if I dismantle!

Perfect for my ferrets. (and they test things!) cleaning/holding/vet transport. top doors are very useful! front door is metal and the locking mechanism is great! would easily hold a pair of hobs or 3-4 jills for transport. i used a singe for each hob 1.7kg(boy) for vet operation. good ventilation. can attach food bowl and (small) water bottle to front without having to open it again.. will reuse for years. can see them being used for small poultry etc.
ignore negative comments, just measure up before you buy and use your head. the dimensions are there! i needed it next day on a sunday and it came first thing… if you have a big moggy or dog shop around. weight will be the problem. there are attachments for straps and it even comes with metal bolts and nuts if you want to “permanently” attach the top section to the bottom or make it more sturdy. is there better out there yes. is tgis exactly what i needed next day in a pinch for a vet visit, absolutely, and some!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPurchased for a new arrival (kitten) and as the first acquisition of this type didn’t really know what to expect.
I mean a kittens small, right? 19″ sounded plenty big enough… it’s not.
Little kitten can only just about stand up without touching the top, it also looks really confined.
It worked for bringing him home and the first vet visit but he really doesn’t like being in it – I’ve ordered the bigger version now too… so 20 I didn’t need to spend. In fairness the measurements are published so this is my responsibility.

For the crate itself. Dead easy to assemble. Clip the top compartment on, bolt-it together (I wouldn’t trust the clips by themselves – bolts supplied) and insert the door. Took all of a few mins.
The unit itself feels sturdy enough. I get a little nervous holding it from the top handle as it feels like the top hatch but work loose but it’s easy enough to avoid that by gripping with two hands.
Overall, good value… just wish I’d measured it up first!

Brilliant carrier. The top opening makes life so much easier and the bigger size box allows me to fit a clutch of kittens in with a generous amount of space. I haven’t experienced any problem with the carrier coming open as some reviewers have flagged up but I can see the sense in attaching a safety strap…there are two loop holes provided that make this an easy option. I now own two of these carriers , I like them and so do my cats.

Got this product to transport 2 new cats we’d adopted from 50 minutes away. Cage is spacious and was easy to put together. Cat settled in perfectly fine, wasn’t too keen on the car journey though. Did have to send one back and order the bigger version as no mention of a weight limit until you see the assembly instructions.

This is lightweight and perfect for smaller cats and dogs. No more trying to entice reluctant felines in through the door, as you can just pop them in the top. Took our new kitten to the vets in this and the vet commented that it was the best cat carrier she had seen.

This is ideal for my cat. A lovely, purring, affectionate bundle of fur normally, he becomes the demon of claws and fangs when it is time to go to the vet. This makes putting him in a front opening cat carrier a problem. Being able to put him in the carrier in via a large top opening is heaven!
The only downside is that the handle is actually on the opening part, making it a little fragile there. But it is still fine, even though it is a thirty minutes walk to the vets (45 minutes plus a ten minute walk using public transport, to figure!), much as I’m sure the cat wishes otherwise and would love to escape.
The carrier is small but so is my cat, so no problem there.
The construction is strong and sturdy, the only weak spot being the one already mentioned. No problem putting it together, either. I had looked at several different carriers in my local shops and found them rather flimsy. This is so much better and great value.

Impressed with the quality and look. It’s really great that you can open top and side to put cat in / let out. It’s also connected sturdily with screws so there’s no way it can fall apart and risk your cat getting out.
Little bit tricky to assemble (but that might just be me!)
Plenty of room inside for cat.

Even though I needed to send it back I would like to give a review to this amazing product. The quality is very good not difficult to ensemble, I lived the idea that opens from up. The point is that was a bit small (height) not wide or area and the next model is to big for the chihuahua we have, so that was the reason I needed to send it back. Out of this, it is a very good product with a very good quality.

We needed a cat carrier pronto and this was our solution. All in all, I’d have to say that I am very pleased with the item. It is robust and the material does not flex under weight. The assembly was simple enough and it isn’t to the detriment of the products function.

The features are excellent. There is a main top hatch which you can use to drop your pen into the box or you can use the main cage door. The door locking mechanism seems a little over the top with the mechanism being housed in a large black box on the cage door. I’m sure there must be a less complicated and yet as effective solution but there we are, it still works great.

Seems sturdy and well built. I’ve got two of the smaller size for my small cats and it’s just about big enough, if you have a large cat or a dog I’d recommend the larger size. The top-opening is a useful feature but the hatch is quite hard to shut properly especially with an unhappy cat inside!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve been meaning to get a newer, bigger carrier for my beast of a cat. All the ones I’ve seen on Amazon have been really hard to tell the sizes of (small cages photo shopped with Golden Retrievers and the like…)

So for anyone reading this with a Big Cat – this cage fits my 6.8kg, somewhat long cat very well. There’s plenty of room for him to turn around and rest comfortably, and can navigate him into it relatively easily.

The main flaw in this is that the Top Opening and Handle are attached – and could be a place of weakness if it’s not 100% closed properly – but for short trips it seems fine.

The carrier seems to be made of tough plastic and quite secure. You can use bolts as an extra measure of making sure the lid won’t fall off if you drop the carrier. However, I would say that the 19inch carrier seems a bit small. My cat is only 3.3 kg and with a smaller blanket in it, the space is very confined. I also wish the main opening were a bit bigger. I have not yet tried to carry it with the cat in it so can’t say anything about the top flap.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersI purchased three of these pet carriers after noting that I would be able to secure them with bolts as well as clips. Too many carriers are clip only, or they are expensive for bolt secure only. This added safety feature is really important to me, knowing what can happen when a clip only carrier is dropped (Local cat lost after carrier was dropped in vet parking lot and it broke open due to clip failure)! Accidents can happen and I would be heartbroken if a clip failed and my cat escaped onto the road and was lost or worse.
The top flap is also secure and spring loaded as stated in the description, this I found was smooth to operate on all 3 carriers that I received, requiring one side or the other to be pulled in order to release the top flap, however if you were concerned about that being a point of exit, it would be easy to zip tie or use string to tie the end of the top flap to the back and sides of the carrier for those of us that happen to be paranoid about that sort of thing, or if you have a pet that likes to try to force open any exit it is aware of.
The front door also has spare holes so if needed they could be tied shut. The wire door is heavy (but not too heavy!) and feels very sturdy to hold, much better than carriers I have had in the past.
For the price I feel this is a great and sturdy buy.
My cats are all quite small under 10lbs each, so I got the 19-inch sizes.
I’ve placed them out with blankets in them since my cats also enjoy using carriers for snoozing spots, this is a good idea for any cat owner to do as kitty will become used to the carrier and not just associate it with trips to the scary vet place!

Well built and safe for precious pets!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this carrier to replace a smaller one that we had when we first got our cat. The carrier is nice and roomy and having both front and top openings is a bonus. The top and bottom halves on the carrier can be unclipped, but I secured them together using the supplied nuts and bolts, as we don’t need that facility.

Although reasonably well made, the plastic does seem a little flimsy in places. The carrying handle is in the removable lid, which is secured by a couple of metal rods. That does seem to be the weakest point in the design, hence the overall rating. I can see that failing if the carrier is used to transport a heavy animal. Although our cat seemed OK in the carrier when my wife and I took her to our local vet’s in it recently, I am on the lookout for some sort of strap to wrap round the carrier to reduce the chances of our pet escaping if a failure does occur.

Overall, the carrier is OK, with those caveats that I’ve mentioned.

This is a really good quality carrier, and the top loading option is great (take care though, I really injured a finger with spring loaded closure). If you’re buying for a cat though, this is far too small. It’s ok for a kitten, but not sufficient for an adult cat. By the time I’d realised my mistake it was too late, and I needed to use it. I think I’ll be donating it to the animal shelter my kittens came from once they’re beyond about 8 months! I wish I’d spent the extra on the larger size.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA big smaller than I thought (despite measuring) but fits my male moggy cat inside no problem. I like that it’s screwed together which gives extra strength compared to others that have clips. For a larger cat I would suggest going to the next size up, as I wanted this orginally for my male bengal but it’s too small. It’s more that height of it that’s disappointing but still gets the cats to & for the vets

Really strong design with screws and not clicks to hold it together, I feel that gives me more peace of mind when my kittens were being carried in it to the vets. I found two small kittens were ok but really only one size cat fits ok in it, very secure door needing you to push together two bits to open the door so no accidents can accurately in the door being opened by mistake, would have liked it to be bigger so I could get two cats in, but that was my mistake for not reading the size correct, but will still use for when I need to only take one cat at a time to the vets as I like the security and strength of this over the other basket I brough

This is a sturdy cat carrier which is firmly secured and accessible both from the top and the front. It’s at a good price too. My only complaint is that I would have preferred the bigger version which unfortunately was out of stock when I ordered. However my little lady is small and hadn’t far to go so this size did the job.

Brilliant value my rabbit loves it and plays in it since we got it. It’s very sturdy and well made this size is snug for my medium size rabbit he can turn around etc but for long journeys where you need to add food bowl etc id recommend trying to find a larger size however I’ve heard it shouldn’t be too large in the case of a sudden stop and being thrown forward a big distance. overall extremely happy with my purchase

For the price, this is a very good basket. It’s easy to construct. Sturdy.
My only cautionary note is to be mindful of the size. It sits at the smaller end of baskets. So would be great for a kitten or juvenile cat. But too small for an adult. My mistake was ordering it for collecting an adult cat for adoption from the RSPCA … and it was too small. Ooops !

Fantastic. Used carrier for first time today. Easy to put together. Very sturdy, which gave me the feeling my cat was safe. The top is clipped and screwed so no fretting about clips giving way and bottom separating from top. The front “door” is a lot more secure than ones I’ve had before, with just the knobs thst turn. The door cannot come off!! No escape route from there either. The top hatch made it very easy to lift my cat out today, instead of having to pull her out by the front door. Less stress on my cat and very happy human. Will be buying another one very soon. Great value for money.

For this price it actually very nice as emergency carrier but remember to check dimensions.
I bought mine in hurry and it’s a bit small.

You can open the top to put you cat that way but it also makes this part much weaker and I simply don’t trust it.
On the other hand it has very strony clips to attache strap and I use this option.

Can recommend as small backup unit.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersReally excellent product for the small amount you pay. Forget the bad reviews. I’m overwhelmed that I could get something so good for such a low price. Mostly came fitted together but the bolts are there if you want to be absolutely sure. I don’t think I’ll need them. My cat goes in easily, and my chunky Chihuahua does too (not at the same time, you understand!). If you need a light carrier, don’t waste time looking, just buy this one. Sounds as though I’m paid by Amazon for writing this review, but I’m not.
(Amazon please note, I’m open to offers!)

Golden Review Award: 58 From Our UsersWe were looking for a cat basket that was like fort knocks as we have Houdini reincarnated as our cat, she can escape anything and everything but this worked out the best basket by far, as while makeing it we secured the front gate so it doesn’t open only the top does so while she is busy clawing the lock (until she figures out the top at least) we are able to get her to the vets in one peice 🙂

Just arrived 30 minutes ago and I’ve built it and trialed it with the guinea pigs. Easy to build but the only draw back is that the roof section comes apart with a bit too much “oomph” as it’s spring loaded. I imagine it’d scare any animals that were inside at the time so i’ll probably just use the front door. However, it seems sturdy enough and very roomy for my two piggies.
The front door is designed well and the screws to keep the parts together are a nice touch.
    Worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 74 From Our UsersIn principle I do like this AmazonBasics 19″ pet carrier. The price is certainly right and the build quality is very good, with one caveat (below). I do have two points to add to the reviews of others from my personal perspective:

    1) My cat is an old man now (16) and has always been tiny (3.4kg) and with a bit of bedding in the base of the carrier it really seems like a bit of prison to me. The vets’ practice is literally a few minutes away, but I’d hesitate to take him even that far in this carrier as it’s really tight inside, even for a small cat. I’ve placed it on the floor and the lid off with some bedding inside to see how he’d fair with it. He can lie on his chest lengthwise with no problem, and indeed he has slept in a ball, which suggest a possible “turning circle” within, but the dimensions are tight. I’d say that the 19″ is fine for kittens and adolescent cats, but nothing larger.

    2) Others have expressed concerns on here and the Amazon USA site regarding the unusual locking mechanism employed in the top-loading lid. It probably would be fine, but if the unexpected were to happen and say the carrier was dropped, I’d argue that there is a *small* possibility of one or both of the “locking rods” slipping from the groove they are in. It really is a shame that Amazon didn’t opt for a more secure method. I realise that nothing is guaranteed when transporting your pet, but I’d only use this style of carrier with a strap running around the centre under the handle to ensure that that lid can’t come off.

I’ve not opted for the larger 23″ model, because of the lid. Instead I settled on the Petmate 2 Door Top Load Carrier, 24-Inch (purchased from Amazon). It’s a massive carrier, overly big for my cat, but I feel *much* happier with the top load hatch.
