delighted with this door,….a replacement for the other type of door (plastic)..which broke within a month,..repaired and strengthened,..but still broke ,,poor construction and too weak at stress points, was very, very disappointed with it…..this one has been perfect, should have bought this one in the first place

Good product, easy to fit & much more robust than the usual catflaps with the rigid plastic door.
The sliding lockable door is a much better idea, the old style when locked are very flimsy & the cat demolishes it every time.

good size door, doesn’t make the noise like the plstic doors do which is a positive. i slight down side was the plastic screws as they shattered over night, since then i used metal screws

Took me about half an hour to install. Magnetic catch is a great idea. Dog uses it all the time and took very little training to get her to use it. Highly recommend it.

This is a good solid product which the two dogs took to with no problem the magnetic strip doesn’t always close the flap and seal the opening which will be a bit cold in winter time will tell if it robust enough my old plastic one took a hammering and lasted two years .

Excellent product fitted well .. However wish the plastic flap was more transparent .. They like to see outside /inside when they are approaching my cat hated it because of this as thought it was solid ..? Dogs reluctant too ..
    A suggestion ..?

Bought a medium one for a border Colley and a Westie survived long than the and plastic ones that stay quiet frequently. Only thing is the plastic screws keep snapping. I used the old bolts and metal Screws from the hard plastic one I replaced. So don’t over tighten them.

HIghly recommend ! weve had plastic ones before with hard flap that our 2 hyper active cocker spaniels have broke – this one is amazing. fits nicely in the door and looks good and the soft plastic still closes well with the magnetic clasp – safe for 2 mental dogs flying through at high speed! Also the slide in locking flap is very good – the dogs can see its closed so dont try to barg through!!! and is also much more secure from a security aspect. Good buy!

Was very impressed by the quality of the finish, well madeand strong. I had 3 plastic ones before and the rigid plastic flaps got broke with my German shepherd sticking his head through and lifting it up. This one has a flexible flap thant cant break so ,problem solved.

We use our petdoor for our Parsons Jack Russell. He s managed to go through a door every 6 months but this one might finally be the one. The flap is strong but silent and because its flexible seems to absorb the force he crashes through it with. Sometimes the magnetic strip doesn t close securely but not a big issue. So far very happy and you can get spare parts.

Brilliant dog flap. Is so much softer on the dog it’s not a hard plastic that they are running into to get out it’s a nice flexible flap and easy to fit. Probably really good if you have a pet that doesn’t like using a a dog flap , it’s so much less offensive and not as noisy either.

Installed it today to replace the rigid medium plastic petsafe flap on a upvc door with a plain panel. That flap lasted about 2 years of abuse andcwas cracked badly on the hard plastic flap. It’s taller than the plastic one which works fine for me though slightly narrower. Being a flexible plastic, much like the rubber strips you see in cold storage areas, the door is pretty much unbreakable but there is a handy replacement part number on the door should the unthinkable happen.
My only criticism is the screws its held together with. I realise they must be multilength but the plastic screws into an aluminium nutsert are very poor. I re tapped them to m4 and used machine screws. If you are able to to do this or deal with the plastic screws (not recommended!) Then I would say I can’t fault this flap. 5 stars but for the screws

Really happy to finally have a pet flap for the dog and cat. They learned to use it quickly. It’s very quiet (as opposed to hard plastic doors that bang open and shut). On very windy days it does allow in some cold air but so far it’s not the end of the world.

Apparently good quality metal construction with strong flexible plastic flat. The dog had broken several of the plastic dog flaps previously but this one appears to be strong enough to stand up to him!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis was relatively easy to fit, good clear instructions make it easily within the capabilities of a most people with a bit of DIY experience. I have two standard wire haired dachshunds and they took to it straight away. The flap makes very little noise but if the wind is blowing directly at the door it sometimes doesn’t positively seal. I fitted it to a panel of a UPVC door and found that the security flap would not slide into place as the lateral piece of doorframe above obstructed it. I managed to get round this buy cutting a spacer from a piece of 18mm thick plywood sheet which I inserted between the inside frame of the flap and the door panel, pushing it out, which then allowed the security flap to be slid in place. It is for this reason I only gave the product 4 stars. It is a shame that the company doesn’t offer a pre-made spacer as an accessory item.

Wonderful product installation instructions make it easy to fit ment it only took an hour & half, my pet dog didn’t even hesitate to use it & enjoys looking out of it surveying the garden. I no longer have to get stressed worrying about the dog getting hot & stressed inside while Im at work.

  31. Anonymous says:

It’s certainly quieter than hard plastic flaps that clatter away every time they are used. The fitting instructions are not very clear and it took me a while to realise I had to snap off the white metal tunnel to fit it to a kitchen door with a plywood insert. I think it assumes you’ll have a solid wood door. However the white metal tunnel does seem to be etched to aid it’s removal by bending it back and forth with pliers.

Having fitted it, I then realised the locking panel that slides in the top was a bit tricky to set in its runners as it fouled the frame around the lower panel. I can get it in but it would have helped to set the door an inch lower – had I set it an inch higher I doubt I’d have got the locking panel in at all.

Having got through numerous plastic type cat flaps, which our Labrador destroyed in an effort to follow the cat; we invested in this one. It fits perfectly, looks neat and the dog has admitted defeat. Some have commented the flap does not shut tightly, have not noticed this but the cat flap is in the conservatory door.

  34. Anonymous says:

This was my 3rd flap, the first was just for the cat so when we got the dog I had to get a bigger one, chose a cheap plastic flap, my main issue was the weight of the actual flap, the cat struggled getting out, the other issue was how close the fixings were to the actual hole, in my UPVC door this caused the edges to blow, so was not very secure. this one however is a light weight flap, no problems with either pets, and it does not make a racket when the dog charges through, the flap comes with a threshold so it looks much neater, so far no issues with gusts of wind blowing it open, and we have had a few windy days. overall I`m super pleased with it.

well made and easy to fit dog flap, the flexible door is so much better that the rigid plastic dog flaps as these frighten some dogs .. the colour of the slide in door to secure and lock it from the inside is a lovely beige colour and is so easy to slide in and out you just press a button and slide it out ,, this is a better quality dog flap unlike the plastic ones on the market that easily get scratched and dirty ,, this aluminium frame wont scratch or discolour and is easily cleaned very pleased

Had the standard hard medium petsafe flap before and although I had to replace it every year due to breaking in all kinds of places, but I’d been happy with it. But I thought this time Id try this soft flap. So glad I did, no noise when in use, flush with the door frame, no wind blowing around it. Had to cut door hole just extra at the top about 1.5″. Excellent, so much better, 50x improvement!

Very pleased with this new dog flap.
We had the plastic version of it prior to that and it had to be replaced twice in 2 years. This one is much sturdier, and QUIETER!!! (You can’t even hear the dogs run out anymore !) , definitely worth the difference in price.

I am sure this will last longer than the other sturdy flaps and it looks nice.
I can’t compare with the others as this has been fixed to a different door that is facing a direction of where the rain falls where all other ones was more sheltered. this one did let in the rain, but my husband has fitted a canopy above it!! And now no rain in the room.
This is not fitted to house but to a shed that the dog sleeps in.
NB i do live in a very windy area and this could be the reason rain did come in as it blew the flexible flap open.

If you have any intention of installing a dog flap. this is the one for you! I had a hard plastic one and the noise of the dogs flying in and out of it could be heard up the street. This one is nearly silent. It keeps out draughts really well and Is easy to install into a upvc door. Now, my dogs go belting in and out chasing each other, so I will let you know about wear and tear in 6 months. Also, if the flap did get damaged, the order number for a new flap, not the whole frame, is written on the side of the flap. There is no downside to this product and I’ve tried others.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this product as I wanted a cat flap which could be robust and resistant to my 2 puppy dogs which busted the traditional plastic cat flaps. They would force there heads through breaking off the plastic window and sometimes wearing the frame around there necks. Comical to look at but another job to fix and therefore the choice to try this product.
It works – its looks much neater than the bulky plastic type and is easy to fit. I did read other buyers comments that it perhaps flaps around in high winds and can let rain in. I have not experienced this defect however it has not been through a horrendous Bromsgrove winter. The contact between the magnet from edge of flap to the metal frame seems good enough though.

brilliant. we had the small plastic ones before this and changed them because they broke every year !! this is much stronger and because the flap is flexible it has much less chance of braking. mine is used by a mad springer and a cat. easy to fit and a cleaver idea using over length plastic screws to fix making them very easy to cut off flush.
    Would highly recommend.

I’m very happy with this door. It seems strong and well made. My only comment is that the instructions failed to state that if your door is thinner than the standard size, you need to break off a section of the aluminum on either side. This caused a little confusion until we worked out what to do and how to do it. Otherwise no complaints and my three dogs got the hang of it in a couple of hours.

I bought this pet door to replace another one that failed to do its job. This one is much better, the flap doesn’t get stuck in weird positions and 2 of my 3 cats learned to use it in a matter of days.
The magnetic closing system, combined with the flexible material used for the door, are a really smart choice: you aren’t afraid the door will stuck and your pets will spend the day outside.
The plastic screws are a bit weird and when I opened the package they failed to convince me, but they did their job.

Fitted in 30 mins , my 2 jack russell dogs ages 7 and 4 went through it in 5 mins after I lifted the flap for them initially .
Within 15 mins flap down in and out no problems . Fitted easily , needed to pack it out a bit as my door had a recess and the door was a bit thin. Plastic screws were absolutely fine no problems there.
I’m glad I didn’t go for the smaller version as I feel this medium size is perfect for jack russell size.
Super quality so glad I went for the aluminum style.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this for my cat who is quite big.

I liked this over standard ‘cat flaps’ as there were no fiddly slides or dials to change whether it was open or not. The magnet seems strong enough and the flap does not blow open in the wind. Although it is not very drafty I still love being able to close this with the slide door to stop drafts and also it is clear to the cat when it is not open he doesn’t have to head butt it to realise it is closed.

If you are happy with only an open or closed option and want a sturdier surface when ‘closed’ this is a good product. I feel more secure being able to slide a solid door closed.

This was just what I wanted and fitted with what I was comfortable with.

This door is quite narrow but a good height, rather a different shape from many dog doors. Our Labrador cross dog can get through quite easily, but a stout old Labrador might find it a bit slim. We think small children could get through but not adults, a bonus from a security point of view. The security door fits well and is positively locked in place. The door flap is heavy flexible plastic and it seems to lie flat even in a big wind. Only minus is that the frame is deeper than most panel doors are thick, so it needed setting out on spacers to make a neat finish. We like the door, and so do the dogs.

Researched a few pet doors. He previously had a similar cat door by Staywell so new the brand and expected it to be of good quality. Its great for my dog. The magnetic closing works well (I did wonder if it would tend to stay open when dog had gone through) closing each time. Its really quiet and sometimes don’t even hear pooch going in or out. Did worry about the security aspect as it is quite a large opening but than burglar would have to be tiny to get through it. The door insert seems quite safe and secure.

For two years we had the cheaper, hard plastic version, until it finally broke and I replaced it with this model. The rickety plastic version crashed and bashed noisily every time the dog went in/out, and drove us nuts at night. This one, on the other hand, is almost silent! It’s taller but slightly thinner than the previous flap, but still fine for a medium-large spaniel. Altogether it’s MUCH tidier to look at, easier to clean, and best of all it’s QUIET!! Brilliant – wish I’d bought it sooner.

This is a brilliant cat flap and in fact also fits our Tibetan Terrier who likes to use a cat flap as well! It’s much better than the one we had before mainly due to the bendy plastic which also allows our 16 year old cat to go through it and she couldn’t use the previous one because the plastic was hard and she couldn’t push through. So all round a great success – we are very pleased with it..

Fabulous, really can recommend this pet door, I have 3 crazy jack russells and was worried if I bought a rigid plastic one they may get trapped if they tried to rush through the door at the same time, so this is safety for them as its flexible. Stayed more or less closed in recent storm and after a little initial introduction (follow the guidelines) sellotape flap up for awhile then I coaxed them through with treats, now they love being able to go in and out and what a peace of mind for us when we have to leave them on their own. I would definately recommend this, also I put a non slip mat behind door when I go out so they don’t slip on floor tiles if they rush through, as they do!

    Straightforward to fit & strong.
The door does swing inwards when the wind is blowing off the sea but as we live practically on the beach this isn’t a fault of the door!
The boys got used to it very quickly and they can still make a quick exit to chase anything that moves!!!
The lockable inner door is an excellent idea for when we are out.

The cat flap seems excellent; it’s well constructed and quiet.

However, our (wooden) door is 10mm thick. The entire cat flap assembly consists of two metal parts (each a panel to sit flush with the door and a short “tunnel” going through the door). The two “tunnels” slot into each other. When slotted together, the gap between the insides of the two panels is about 25mm. If the door is thicker than this (presumably up to the length of the supplied screws), I’d imagine there’s no problem. However, if you have a 10mm door, there’s 15mm worth of gap, so there would be hard edges and the whole thing wouldn’t stay in one place. Unless the suppliers expect you to cut the aluminium down (which I doubt given the position of the serial number, and the likely sharp edges it would produce), or I’ve missed some feature, I don’t think the Amazon description of “for doors from 9.5mm” is correct.

We got round this by using some 18mm-thick wood (an old shelf), cut to a rectangle the size of the outer edge of the flap (about 200x300mm), with a 150x245mm hole in the middle the size of the “tunnel”, plus 7mm holes for the cat flap’s screws to go through; this then adds to the “sandwich” so instead of panel/door/panel, we have panel/door/extra wood/panel, and this works fine (and looks OK).

So: be prepared for some woodwork if you have a thin door!

If you have to install a cat/small dog door flap this must be the best one you can lay your hands on. It’s nicely designed, very simple to install and is discrete when fitted. It also appears to be extremely durable. This product puts the usual rubbish plastic flaps ones sees in most pet owners doors to shame. Extremely good value for money

Well made product should last years my only gripe when fitting it was a couple of the pre drilled holes didnt line up exactly so needed a bit of persuasion. It looks good and my dogs soon got the hang of it within hrs,a staffie and border terrier 🙂

My puppies have been using this for about 2/3 weeks – we’d be lost without it now! It seems unfair that we didn’t have one before now! I love it that my puppies have the freedom to go out in the garden when they need/want to and since we’ve got it, there have been no accidents indoors. The prodcut itself is briliant too. Although the weather has been warm, I know that when winter comes I will not need to worry about a draught.

Had this for almost a year now and still as good as new. The dog is in and out maybe 15 or 20 times a day and there are no signs of wear round the flap. Really glad I bought this rather than a cheaper one.

We had always had the basic versions of Staywell cat and dog doors previously but decided that we would opt for the aluminium variety this time. Wow! What a difference. The quality is tip top and we cannot hear it being used by either the cat or the dog. Now bearing in mind that the dog is a six month old Miniature Schnauzer, who bombs rather than comes through the flap, that is really understating how quiet it is. The quality of the closing panel is also solid and well thought out.

I would recommend this unequivocally to anyone considering buying a new cat/dog flap. I cannot see us having to order replacements and the original cost of 29-67 wasn’t much higher than the basic model. Well worth every penny for the undisturbed night’s sleep we’re now getting.

eturned it as we ordered a medium one for our dog I would say was medium,
We exchanged it for a large one and it is great. should have measured the dog first,
that was is recommended. Our dog is a cocker spaniel, of average size, but the
    medium was too small.

I have fitted the pet door in a wall having made a liner through the wall with some 16mm plastic facsia boarding. The door being on the outside of the wall means that to block it off with the supplied blanking door you have to go outside to fit it. It would be better if the inner aluiminium frame had the sliding bit for blanking it off. Apart from that it does an excellent job as it is very quite compared to a normal pet door.

i bought this for a friend and she said that it was brilliant very quiet and very strong after having bought a few plastic ones that did’nt last long and there was’nt much differencee in the price it was a bit bigger also so she was very pleased with it.

The door is brilliant, the only warning I have is that the plastic bolts to fasten it to the door are VERY weak and to purchase more was nearly as dear as buying a new door!

Having already bought one of these for an internal door when the plastic one on the outside finally cracked I thought I’d get another one of these. Being metal it’s very durable and the plastic flap is practically silent in operation – no more banging and clattering late at night.

Only downside is that the design seems to have changed, this new door has plastic screws that poke through the “outside” frame and are trimmed off with a knife when fitted. This differs from the previous model which held the screws internally without coming through the frame. Just makes the outside look a little untidy instead of a flush metal surface.

However in practical use it’s superb.

got tired of the plastic flaps cracking on the other staywell pet doors so replaced them with this .While the flap is flexible and will last a lot longer ,it tends to blow inwards in gusty winds – room gets very cold . .Wish the door had a stronger magnetic strip or some way of staying put on windy days .Any suggestions please ?

This cat flap really is the dog’s…..no that’s wrong but you get my meaning. I have had various plastic versions in the past all of which my boisterous cats have trashed. This aluminium Staywell pet door is so solidly constructed that I think it will virtually impossible for them to break. Powder coated with steel braces at each corner, quiet in operation and good at keeping the wind out All in all a superb product. Well done Staywell!

Easy to use – the dog got the hang of it quickly. The flap is quiet and sometimes when I’m working at the table next to it I don’t hear the dog go out! Like the fact it can be locked at night (to avoid foxes coming in) or if I’m away or out with the dog.

I have never had a dog flap for my pervious dogs but decided to get one fitted because I had to get up in the night to let my toy poodle puppy out. It was delivered at 3pm fitted by 4pm and the dog was using it by 5pm. I now get to spend all night in bed bliss.

This door has stood the test of time and is a good buy if you have pets that ‘argue’ over who’s going through first! Because it’s flexible it is strong and closes well to keep out draughts. I found that the rigid plastic doors often got wedged open in the past. Returning home to a freezing house is no fun – so I would recommend this one!

Could not believe how well made this was, so strong and sturdy and they way you lock it down is just brilliant. Took my dog a couple of days to get used to it but then he’s a bit of a drama queen. Brought a new puppy some weeks later and she went straight out through it. Don’t buy the cheap plastic ones if you want quality.

I ordered the wrong size (medium, should have ordered large). Sent it back, got a refund and ordered the large – no problems and good service.
I had to order this flap because a new dog was so scared of the noise of the old plastic one that he would not use it. This one is silent, so no problems there, and seals better than the one it replaced. I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone with a nervous dog.

We use to have the plastic style dog flap ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Staywell-Petsafe-Original-2-Way-Medium/dp/B000LXRCDY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1349858154&sr=8-2 ) which is smaller and slightly wider . . . the thing is with the old style door our Jack Russel was getting through them like chew sticks. Anyhow the fitting was a little tricky due to the change of shape, but it can be done and i was finished within an hour. I could tell the difference immediately in how it was stopping the cold coming through into the kitchen.

It seems to be made to a much higher standard than the plastic one, and if i had my time again i would have gone for this one from the start . . .only time will tell in how it lasts.

but all in all a very happy customer, it’s worth paying that little bit more for the quality

did a lot of searching and reading reviews and decided on this pet door which i fitted into our pvc panelled door,
took a little while maybe 2hrs in total but well worth it my westie and border terrier love it within an hour they were in and
out as i was worried my 7 year old would not do it but no problem at all,no noise at all when they use it.I am going to buy a spare flap as a spare just in case as my border is a pup and chews everything but so far so good.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis dog flap is brilliant. Our dog ate the three previous flaps and the cost of replacing them was more than the cost of this product. He cannot get his teeth around this one, and seems to understand the way it opens easier – he’s not very bright! Although sceptical at first, it is less draughty than a conventional one. My OH very practical so fitting was easy but bolts were not deep enough for our door. However thrilled and fully recommend.
