This set from Warner is terrific: holding all 3 movies in both Theatrical and Extended cuts. 4K pictures that are detailed, well coloured with amazing black levels that truly are beautiful filmic images, and with a thoroughly immersive Dolby Atmos surround track that is engaging, absorbing, effects laden, and with tremendous bass. No extras at all in this set which is very disappointing.

Great value, great product. This is a digitized re-master of the film which many have said has been over-processed (too much NR they say) but for me, it’s a big improvement on the original film scan put out on DVD a few years ago which all of us Tolkien geeks will have anyway. If you are a fan, at this price, you can’t not buy it, now can you.

Mistakenly read some AI review of it saying it was all things to all men… i.e. it was the extended edition. It wasn’t. Would like to have a word with that reviewer to see what he was thinking. lol. Other than that, good price for the trilogy in High Definition. Forgotten how much was actually left out and how quite a lot of it made far more sense when you watch the extended versions… which I did, directly after watching these. lol..

An Epic Journey into Middle-earth’s Timeless Tale!
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy [Theatrical and Extended Edition] [4K Ultra HD] [2001] [Blu-ray] [Region Free] has been an unparalleled cinematic journey that I feel incredibly privileged to have experienced. As a devoted fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary masterpiece, this 5-star trilogy has left an indelible mark on my heart and soul, immersing me in the enchanting world of Middle-earth like never before.

    The Visual and Technological Marvel:
Seeing The Lord of The Rings Trilogy in 4K Ultra HD was nothing short of breathtaking. The journey of Frodo Baggins and the fellowship of the ring struck a profound chord within me. The filmmakers’ dedication to staying true to Tolkien’s vision was evident in every scene, capturing the essence of the characters and the timeless themes that lie at the heart of the story. From the enduring bonds of friendship to the courage to face insurmountable odds, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy delves into the very essence of humanity. Character Portrayals – A Tour de Force:
The cast’s performances were nothing short of remarkable, making the characters feel like old friends. Ian McKellen’s portrayal of Gandalf was truly legendary, embodying the wisdom, strength, and compassion of the beloved wizard. Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn stood out as a true hero, showcasing the journey of a reluctant king embracing his destiny with humility and valor. The entire ensemble, including Elijah Wood as Frodo, Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee, and Andy Serkis as Gollum, breathed life into these iconic characters, adding depth and authenticity to their roles. The emotional range displayed by each actor made these characters unforgettable and relatable, making us feel every joy and sorrow alongside them.

The Extended Edition – A Definitive Journey:
Experiencing the Extended Edition of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy was a revelation that enriched the narrative and expanded my appreciation for the films. The additional scenes provided a deeper understanding of the lore, enriching the storytelling with captivating details and character moments. It felt like a true treasure trove of Middle-earth’s history, unveiling the subtleties and complexities of Tolkien’s world that may have otherwise been overlooked. Watching the trilogy in its most comprehensive form was a definitive journey, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the intricacies of the story and the depth of the characters. The extended content seamlessly integrated with the theatrical versions, creating a seamless and cohesive narrative that enhanced the emotional impact and resonance of the trilogy.

Impact on Cinema and Pop Culture:
The impact of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy extends far beyond its cinematic brilliance. It has redefined the possibilities of filmmaking, inspiring a generation of filmmakers to push the boundaries of storytelling and special effects. Peter Jackson’s visionary direction and innovative use of technology set new standards for epic fantasy films, influencing the way in which grand narratives are brought to life on the big screen. The trilogy’s immense popularity has fostered a strong sense of community among fans worldwide, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries. The dedicated fandom has not only kept the spirit of Middle-earth alive through fan gatherings, conventions, and online discussions but also continues to inspire new generations of storytellers, artists, and enthusiasts.

Purchased as a gift, this arrived quickly and in mint condition and as both a LOTR buff and someone who is very fussy about quality, I highly recommend this. Unfortunately doesn’t have all the extras from the original set but both visuals and sound were crystal clear-to the point of me noticing things I’ve never noticed in my previous 20 plus watches of the series

Read the books, many times, watched each film upon its cinema release: I also watched them on DVD, then on Blu ray. Then on this 4k set. On my OLED TV, played through a Sony 4k player, it was almost like being there, at times. The picture was so clear, the perspectives so real (almost).

Had the original dvds, upgraded to blu ray, then to the extended editions. Been holding back on this till the price dropped.

Finally dropped to 45 quid so treated myself to try it on my new quantum dot oled tv. Also have full front and rear Dolby Atmos sound system. The whole thing looks and sounds insane. Totally immersive sitting in the atmos sound bath.

Only minor quibble, would have Bern nice to have new appendices including the sound and picture remaster.

    Superb 4K update
I had the original extended trilogy on DVD but never upgraded to the Blu Ray version as I was waiting for the 4K UHD version. I’m glad I did, the picture quality is fantastic and a noticeable upgrade from the original. Given the 1st part was released in 2001, the picture quality and definition now match the most releases. Very happy and find myself studying all the extra details on show!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersCardboard packaging is a bit cheap but otherwise good
First the bad. The cardboard packing that surrounds the plastic case holding the disks is not the best. It has a printed sleeve glued with silicone on the outside of the box but its the same information that is on the plastic case so I just removed it entirely. I think this is a cheap way of making a one box fits all and it by no means unusual. The trend now is minimal packaging and it looks to me as if this paper slip is designed to be removed hence the three dots of silicone holding it in place.

The disks themselves are fine, all of them played in my Sony Blue Ray SACD player. The image quality is very good and the Dolby Atmos soundtrack excellent too. I did not have any issues with the sound levels but then I have a very good system with room acoustic mods to ensure that all 10 speakers are properly setup. I cannot comment on how TV speakers would sound.

What I received was not fake, it is a genuine product, the cardboard packing is just a bit cheap. There are no extra whatsoever so if you need all that, this is probably not the set for you, it only includes the Theatrical and Extended versions of each movie spread across 9 disks with the extended movies in two parts on 2 disks per movie.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersOverall great.
Having watched this trilogy multiple times on dvd and blurray, I just had to get the 4K edition which includes both the theatrical and extended versions for all three films.

The product is definitely not fake like some reviews have stated. The quality of the box is not the best, the plastic holding the discs is flimsy and the sleeve has a paper cover on it that can be easily removed. This is done on purpose (I assume to reduce costs) and does not mean the product is fake, just low quality packaging.

Moving onto the actual movies, I have only watched Fellowship of the Ring so far in this edition but the quality is really good for such an old film so I hope the other two continue with this quality.

The 4K is surprisingly good for such an old film and the HDR is mostly great. Not all highlights pop out but this is mainly only an issue in brighter scenes. The dark scenes look fantastic and highlights pop. Colours are also great and audio definitely sounds better than previous versions. Watching this on my OLED tv is just out of this world.

There are still some negatives. I found the audio balancing to still be as poor as previous versions, I kept having to either increase of lower the volume depending on the scene. It is also annoying that the extended versions are still on two discs. This is to be expected on dvd and bluray discs which can’t hold as much data but I didn’t think this would be an issue with 4K discs. It also doesn’t include the standard bluray discs like most 4K movies do but I don’t think this is an issue as I bought it for the 4K discs and not the bluray discs.

Overall a great release of one of the best movie trilogies to exist.

(Note that my phone enhanced the colours of the photos so they do not exactly reflect what you will see)

Beautiful remaster with only one negative
Overall, beautiful picture with an epic Dolby Vision HDR grade. The sound is clearer than ever in the Adobe Atmos mix. Excellent.

The only negative I have is that the Two Towers was overly denoised which has scrubbed some details from faces when moving slowly, and gives scenes with mist an effect that leaves a echo effect of the previous frame when characters move through the mist. Considering Fellowship has lots of misty scenes, and reduces denoising for those scenes, I can’t undertand why this error exists in two towers. It is a little distracting, but does not remove a star for me.

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersI hope this review helps those who are confused...
So I purchased this for my partners birthday as she loves LoTR, we have a dedicated display of the books, DVDs, games and props etc.

I was really skeptical as I read a lot of comments that kept saying it’s fake and not genuine, pirated movies and so on. Which is definitely not the case at all. They are genuine movies, at least with what I got delivered.

A lot of people spoke out about the fact they didn’t work in their DVD players and Blu Ray players. To those people I’d ask the simple question of are they using a 4K Blu Ray player? Or aware that a 4K Blu Ray isn’t the same as a standard definition DVD or a HD Blu Ray? I have an Xbox One S which can play 4K Blu Ray disks and a 4K LG TV, I tested each disk to ensure they worked and they all loaded and looked as beautiful as you’d expect them to look. I didn’t have enough time to watch each movie through, so I don’t know yet if there’s any issues with the disks or anything yet but for the two mins of running each disk it seemed great.

Non of the disks had scratches or any signs of damage which was great.

The only thing that I would agree with that others mention, was the fact the sleeve is very poorly made. I can understand that this would give the illusion that these disks aren’t genuine but a poorly glued sleeve doesn’t speak for the actual disks that worked perfectly and were all running in 4K and HDR. It seems the sleeve was made with the front and side print, but the rear and small part that wraps to the top of the front that says 4k Blue Ray is a seperate paper that’s been poorly glued on.

I also saw some people mention there’s no extended scenes, which is not true at all. You’ve got the Theatrical movies and the extended on seperate disks, the extended do have the added scenes. I’m assuming you weren’t playing the correct disks.

Overall from my first impressions, the sleeve is garbage but I didn’t pay to look at the sleeve, the movies are all working perfectly fine and look brilliant. If you’re gonna buy the 4K UHD Blu Ray collection I highly recommend it, but make sure you’ve got a UHD 4K Blu Ray player and a 4K TV or it’s not going to work for you.

    Review of 4k Discs
This is the best these films have ever looked, no question. The picture is very high bit-rate, Dolby Vision adds a nice boost to image quality, the only downside is a touch of DNR and edge enhancement that was likely only done to make the best of the 35mm source. Sadly, CGI has been upscaled from the 2k original version, with a few touch-ups to hide imperfections. Regardless, it looks better than it did in the cinema.
The lack of bonus features is a shame if you don’t already own the previous comprehensive Extended Blu-ray (or DVD) editions. The most bizarre omission is that of the audio commentaries; the extended editions are still split across two discs, which are supposedly 100GB each – easily enough to fit the commentaries on without adversely affecting picture or sound quality. The theatrical versions are squeezed onto single 100GB discs and so are more compressed, and yet look and sound exactly the same. It’s just odd.
On another note, I have noticed many people claiming the discs don’t work in their players, or don’t have the added scenes. First, these are UHD discs and require a UHD player (Xbox One S, X, Series X & PS5 can all play them). Secondly, the discs look similar at a glance, but there are three discs for each film – one theatrical, two extended.
Please be more thoughtful before criticising a product when the issue is your own ignorance.

The 4k picture quality is outstanding and this is by far the best 4k film I have seen so far.
The set contains both theatrical and extended versions (which are split over 2 discs).
Sadly there is no special features which is a shame but this is more about the 4k upgrade.
There was a few scenes towards the end of Return where you could clearly see green screen shoots which are more noticeable now on 4k, other than that it is perfect.

Don’t need to say much about the films – absolutely perfect in every way and some of the best 4K discs on the market. It’s just a shame they didn’t put ANY extras into this boxset. The Extended Edition DVD sets they brought out 10 years ago had the most comprehensive and to this day the best behind the scenes footage i have ever seen on a DVD set, so for 75, it’s slightly disappointing to have nothing on here at all.

It amazes me how the LOTR movies look better than the Hobbit movies. I really love both trilogies, but it is not a surprise that these 3 movies are the main deal (Probably because we have more miniatur work here, instead of Hobbits heavy reliance on everything CGI).

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our Users4K is absolutely STUNNING!!!
The second they released this mighty trilogy in 4K HDRI needed it. I needed it badly!!!

The 75.00 price tag was the only barrier but as soon as I saw that it had dropped to around the 50 mark, I could no longer resist!

I had never even streamed the films in HD or viewed them on Blu-Ray format, as I purchased them on DVD many years ago when they first came out, so it was a serious upgrade for me.

All I can say is that all 3 titles are presented SPECTACULARLY.THIS is the precise reason why 4K HDR was developed – to enable us to enjoy visually accomplished filmmaking like this in all its glory. This masterful collection of films contains some of the most jaw-dropping imagery ever committed to celluloid, and certainly warrants the Ultra HD treatment more than any other.

I’ve watched numerous 4K restorations such as The Matrix, Top Gun and Terminator 2 and nothing compares to the quality of this upgrade.

The battle sequences in The Return of the King are by far the most astonishing examples of CGI ever created. It really is something special to behold – completely unparalleled and epic in every sense of the word.

Everything looks immaculate in 4K – crystal clear, dazzlingly bold and intensely vibrant. In all honesty, the colour and picture detail is staggering, almost overwhelming at times, especially enhancing some of the darker footage and offering previously unseen depth and clarity.

It just elevates the experience to a whole new level. I found myself pausing it at multiple points to try and fully absorb the grandeur of it – it’s such an onslaught on the senses that I desperately wanted to savour certain moments and revel in it. Some of the scenery and special effects are OUT OF THIS WORLD.

The audio is now incredibly punchy, crisp and immersive too – equally as noticeable an upgrade as the image resolution. An example being the voice of Treebeard, whose beefy sub-tones sound entirely other-worldly.

It’s truly breathtaking stuff and, without a doubt, the crown jewel in my movie collection.

I’ve always considered LOTR to be the greatest trilogy in the history of cinema. Viewing it in 4K HDR only reaffirms that notion.

    Awesome Trilogy
I’ve owned the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy on all formats and had the Special Edition’s too.

So decided to upgrade to the 4k versions,
Which I’m glad I did cause I can see the difference from the other formats,
The picture quality is awesome, so clear etc,
Yes had a few issues in certain scenes where the colour grading wasn’t perfect, but I’m not going to let that stop me from giving it credit.

All the movies are in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos,
Makes it look better and the sound is phenomenal, especially with the sound system on,
The battle scenes were out of this world in Atmos, heard stuff that never heard before.

This is a really good set, comes with all Theatrical versions and the extended versions too.

Nice sleeve cover for the DVD case too, in a mat finish,

Overall I’m very happy with the purchase of this set.
Let’s be honest this Trilogy is one of the greatest movies ever to hit our screens.

Would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Great trilogy and this 4k Remaster has breathed new life into these fantastic films. Don’t listen to the people saying that they are receiving a pirated copy because of the packaging or that certain discs are not working. There is a outer back cover that comes off to reveal the artwork on the actual sleeve. Not sure why people are finding that discs are not working, seems due to people not having the appropriate devices needed to play 4k bluray discs.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNot fake?
I dont know why the lady in the video review above is claiming this is a fake product. Its the exact same set everyone else has had and the box is not blurry at all?? Love this boxset and the 4k picture is amazing

    Definitely recommend
Spectacular picture and quality. Made an already legendary trilogy even better. Maybe biased because I love Tolkien, but hands down the best motion picture trilogy ever to grace the big screen and the 4K HDR remaster makes it feel like it was released yesterday. Amazing and definitely recommended for anyone who has 4K HDR capability.

    4k great, box not so
The video quality is brilliant, that is the most important part as that’s the whole point in this set. The downside is the poor quality box, like others have mentioned for the price you expect something better than the shambles it is.

I am a bit disappointed in the box but the main part is the film quality is fantastic and have really enjoyed watching the films… again 🙂

Nice boxset, shame about the extras
So this boxset includes all 3 Lord of the Rings movies in 4k Ultra HD covering 9 disks. The extended version of each movie spans 2 discs and the theatrical version covers one disk. The picture quality is superb. My only disappointment is that you get no extras (aside from subtitles) at all. I believe an ultimate Middle Earth boxset is due out shortly which includes these movies and the 3 Hobbit movies too. That boxset includes the extras that this version lacks.

    UHD rocks!
The difference in picture is tangible. This is the way to watch a magnificent series of films.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUltra 4k blu ray
When reading the one star reviews about this not working, like I did, you need to remember this is an ultra 4k blu-ray and won’t play on ps3 or ps4. You need an ultra 4k blu ray machine or ps5 to play this which it mentions in the product photo of the back of the case. Also, people seem to be putting in the theatrical release disc and complaining that its not the extended version, which is the first of 3 disc (per movie), the extended version is on discs 2 &3 for each movie. It’s a really good upgrade to 4k and the only downside is that there isn’t any appendices like in the DVD extended trilogy box set and the box sleave is peeling and poorly made, which is bad work by whoever WB outsourced the sleave work to. Each of the 3 discs for the movies are the same colour as the corresponding box colour for the old extended dvd box set so I’ve replaced my old dvd discs in the box set with the new 4k discs.

    LORD OF THE RINGS
Brilliant film. Had to buy a new copy, friend used disc two as a saucer, unintentionally, too busy talking. Can’t wait to put it on again. Great, great film.

The best 4K titles that I own.
The movies are classics that have stood the test of time.
The 4k discs are simply stunning, the image is sharp, crisp, bright and colourful.
I thought that the Blu-rays were good, but the 4K versions are on a different level, the picture quality is so deep and richly detailed that some scenes have astonishing depth and scale.
Sound quality is good also, but really it’s the gorgeous picture that hits you, “Fellowship” (my favourite of the three) is dripping with textures and colours that my old dvd and Blu-ray could never reveal.
I’ve got a fair few 4K titles, and to be honest some are barely better than the cheaper Blu-ray equivalent.
But The Lord of the Rings is not only worthy of the expense of upgrading, it is the demo of choice when you want to show newbies the power of what a proper 4K restoration and meticulous transfer can achieve.

The Two Towers Extended Edition Disc 1 scratched and not functioning on Xbox One X
*UPDATE: I spoke to Amazon’s Customer Services, and they were kind enough to offer a full refund for this item, despite it being more than a month outside of the normal return window. This is the first time I have ever received a broken DVD or Blu Ray from Amazon, so I suppose I was unlucky, especially considering the price of this box set. Since these are probably my all-time favourite films, I will purchase them again and hopefully the second box set will work 🙂

The films themselves are wonderful, it’s just a shame that I put Disc 1 of the Extended version of Two Towers into my Xbox, only to find that it is not working, despite this being a new (and 75!) boxset. Unfortunately, I ordered this in April but did not open it until last weekend, and there seem to be zero options for customer support. I’m very disappointed to have spent so much on a new item, only for it to not work.

It’s also worth comparing the packaging and contents to the Blu-ray extended edition, the latter of which came in a lovely box with a map of Middle-Earth. This, however, seems to come in less substantial and cheaper packaging, despite the price, which was disappointing.

    Minor sound issues
The epic trilogy as shown in cinemas and at a decent price.

I did find the sound to be a bit all over the place in that I had to turn it up for the quiet bits and down for the battle scenes, which is a problem I don’t usually experience on my TV/xbox with other dvds and blurays. But that’s probably more about the editing than an issue with the discs themselves.

    4K Brilliance
I love the LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY anyway it’s one of my all time favourite classics and will never forget when I went to see these at the cinema however these 4K Upgrades of both the THEATRICAL & EXTENDED VERSIONS are beautiful great use of colours and the DOLBY ATMOS track is just phenomenal much more clear dialogue and sound effects that I never heard before, if your a fan of these films and you have a 4K display then this should most definitely be in your collection.

One transfer to rule them all
This is an outstanding set, picture and sound are demonstration quality IMO. If you use a 5.1 sound system or better you are in for a treat, some of the best rear speaker usage I’ve ever heard, very immersive. I own the original extended dvd releases and never upgraded to Blu-ray, so paying out for this set was not so painful, I’m pleased I waited. Some reviews have commented about the information sheet glued onto the box, suggesting it’s pirated! Nonsense, this simply peels off to reveal the artwork underneath.

I'll stick with the well made Extended DVD versions.
I think the DVDs where better packaged in the Extended four disc editions of the films.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersAbsolutely LOVING the new colour grade and detailed picture.
I was a little bit dubious about spending so much money on this 4K ultra HD box set but after just the first 10 minutes I knew it was worth it!!

The box set comes with all three theatrical films AND all three extended edition films (that’s 9 discs!) but non of the extended edition extras. The box isn’t too bulky either and can easily fit on my dvd shelf.

We currently have an OLED 4K ultra HD tv and have been watching this via a PS5 and the picture is AMAZING. there’s so much detail and so much added depth to the whole film. From blades of grass to the tiny individual drops of sweat there suddenly so much more to these films.

One of the most noticeable difference is the whole colour grade! It’s no longer too warm like the original VHS fellowship that I still have but also doesn’t have that awful blue tint of the blue ray editions. The greens are now perfectly green while the oranges and reds are still deep enough to not be effected by the added coolness. You can tell that a huge amount of time has been put in to fixing this and it’s very appreciated.

Overall I’m extremely pleased with this box set. It’s a huge improvement and so worth the money!
