Fantastic Microphone for vocals. Lots of fakes out there and you have to watch out but when you get the real thing you know it’s a great quality mic all round. Everyone needs one on their studio or personal recording room. Check photos to see exactly what a genuine one looks like to compare it with yours.

Great Mic for vocals. Make sure to check overall quality if you buy from other places

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersVery happy with this purchase. It is a robust mic and the sound quality is good. I actually bought a new speaker as this mic requires fantom power. I had to play with it a little as I am not a professional singer so took a little time to get the hang of using the mic for the best sound.

This mic is the best vocal mic I’ve ever bought. If you’re disconcerted by the price, I think you’re better off buying a mic like this that will last longer and sound better, than a mic that might be worse, and you might end up having to upgrade.

I have used this legendary microphone for over 50-years as a working professional, and it has NEVER let me down, even once, and I was a traveling rock drummer doing one-night stands for most of my life. Not only does it sound great, but it is as tough as NAILS, always and important consideration during the grueling pressures of live performance (in a pinch, it will even double as a hammer). I always buy the one with the ON/OFF switch, as it instantly stops any feedback problems, as well as silencing the mic from any unwanted noises. While some people seem to be worried about the addition of an on off switch as far as reliability is concerned, they simply don’t know what they’re talking about. I have only needed two of these mics for my entire professional career, AND NOT A SINGLE SWITCH EVER FAILED TO FUNCTION OR WAS EVER DAMAGED FROM HEAVY USE. This fear is totally unfounded, as well as any mistaken belief that a switch interferes with the sound quality… it doesn’t.
P.S. I just purchased a Sennheiser e945 as a possible upgrade to this mic, and I HATED it. The feedback issues were horrific (particularly with no on-off switch to deal with it), it was twice as heavy, and worse still, my vocals just didn’t sound as good, from top to bottom.
P.P.S. Today, Labor Day 2022 I was doing a live gig outdoors, when I actually tripped over the mic cord and the mic slammed directly into the concrete, HARD. I was a little worried since this was my only mic, but of course, the 58 came through beautifully, with just a little dent in to windscreen. When you career depends on it, leave it to Shure to come through… every time.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI love thee mics. Very nice quality. For close mic vocal use, they are rich and have depth. This is what quality sounds like. It has a nice weight (quite heavy) and it is very durable. The ball is tough if you drop it – but if you do get a ding, it is strong enough to push back out again (use a teaspoon handle to push it out from the inside). I have only used these for vocal PA and vocal recording. They are superb for both. I recommend them.

If you are looking for a professional-grade mic, you can’t go wrong with this; remember if you are using it as a studio recording mic you will need to pair it with a good pre-amp to get the best performance. Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersAmazing microphone for such a price. Got it on a lightning deal for 6.7k which is a steal. I really appreciate Amazon for selling it at such a price. I had been waiting on the edge to buy it, but didn’t really see any advantage to getting a dynamic mic as I already owned AT2020 and MXL990 and 991. But these are condenser microphones and they really need a lot of acoustic treatment for the room. This mic SM58 on the other hand absolutely sounds phenomenal and we don’t need to worry about the room acoustics because it rejects everything else and only picks up the sound from in front of the mic.

    Pros:
    1. Obviously it’s legendary build quality. I didn’t think it would be 300gm! It’s like a tank. You can hammer nails with this.
    2. Beautifully tuned for vocals and other woodwind instruments (I play the flute and it records it brilliantly) Almost all artists use this live and it gives the flute a nice natural sound. A condenser microphone actually needs you to be more precise in your breathing and even picks up the small noises while playing. But this microphone rejects all that and only picks up the direct sound. I’m amazed at how well this mic has been designed in a cardioid pickup pattern. I usually have trouble extending the bass flute sounds, but with this mic, it actually accentuates the bass flute sound!
    3. It has warm and rich bass sound.
    4. Almost all classical live performances and a lot of the bollywood songs are recorded on this mic. The sound signature of this mic is familiar to everyone and hence it sounds so good.

    Cons:
    1. It needs a lot of gain to get a usable signal. And if you don’t have a powerful and good quality amp, it’ll introduce noise (although you could reduce it in post production). On a scarlett 2i2, this thing needs 75% gain and it is sufficiently loud without any self noise. On a Zoom H5 recorder, it gets by at level 5.5 to 6 gain. So zoom recorder’s amps are a little more powerful I believe. I believe this high gain requirement was because it was designed in the late 60s where the equipment was all analog and needed a lot of voltage for the sound mixing boards to work with.

What you get in the box
    1. Mic (duh!)
    2. Mic stand adapter (I thought there was a 3/8th inch adapter but I didn’t see it in my box. May be Indian version doesn’t have it)
    3. Faux leather zippered pouch
    4. Cable tie
    5. Stickers

The microphone has a “Shure – Distributed in India” hologram plastered on it’s body. I had made the mistake of peeling it (as I thought it ruined the look of the microphone!) and as soon as I peeled it, the sticker left out a residue in letters saying “void void void”. So I think I just voided my warranty! So DO NOT remove the hologram sticker. I believe I got the original and not fake microphone. It had all the signs of an original Shure mic.

Overall I’m extremely satisfied with the product. I don’t think I’ll ever be needing my Condenser microphones with such an amazing and well built dynamic mic is available.

Note: People who want to run it off their PC or Mac.Don’t! …. Get an audio interface as this mic needs good pre-amplification.

Can't believe Shure is selling it for such a low price. It's a legendary vocal and wood wind mic!

I owned a Shure SM58 back in the 1980s. I stopped performing for a couple of decades and when I got back into it, I read that there newer mics that were better suited for female voices, and I ended up buying a Heil PR35. The Heil is a very nice mic, but a bit pricey for some of the dives our band plays in. I bought an SM58 for those kinds of gigs as they seem tough enough to withstand just about any abuse. I noticed right away that my voice is much warmer and smoother using the SM58 than it is with the Heil. I will probably sell the Heil and use the Shure full time.

I use this with a Shure X2U (I guess that a FocusRite or Mackie etc would be fine too) for doing voiceovers for our screen capture software demonstration videos. It really is excellent. You can spend a lot more money on more exotic mics, but I’m not sure if the benefit is there, as frankly, these are not Hollywood blockbusters. A really good aspect of the Shure is that it rejects background noise so well. So no one can hear the fans whirring away on the nearby PC, or room echo. No need to treat the room acoustically. You just get nice clear, warm speech. We’ve got a much more pricey mic for shooting videos, an AudioTechnica AT4053b, and I tried this instead of the Shure for doing the screencam videos. But it starts picking up computer noise etc, which the Shure doesn’t. If I have it about 5 inches away and speak as if I was presenting to a small room, then it is job done – not even any post processing required.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI use this in an unusual way. I do live video of bands. I’m constantly required to stand right next to the speakers, so that I don’t block the audiences line of sight. I need a reference sound track to sync my cameras together. The built in camera mics get mechanically overloaded by the sound pressure(i.e. they physically can’t take the strain, dialling down the gain is irrelevant, the signal is already distorted), the same is true of most other mikes, but, this mike is a vocal mike with a really good tolerance for high sound pressures. Net, net, for me , this is the only solution that works in a high sound pressure environment.

  52. AbbyYHQqts says:

Good mic for amateur use, pub bands etc. If you are in a more serious set up, then look at the audix or Sennheiser range for intermediate, Neumann for professional. The 58 Beta is also a good mic (better than this again) but if you are going to pay that sort of money, then its worth stretching a little further to get the cut through you need.

This is simply “the” professional mic in my opinion. Not only is it well built, pretty tough to break and always reliable, the sound quality out of this is just something you need to hear to know the difference. Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is THE industry standard microphone for voice. This hand held microphone is adaptable and durable. Been using these for ages and even some of the old ones are working as well as new. There are many cheaper “imitation” mics out there, but this is the real thing. Feels secure in the hand, it is nicely weighted and the sound is clear and warm. Mellifluous voices keep their resonance and warmth, and higher voices keep their clarity without tinnyness.

These mics work perfectly with standard XLR cables, but also work perfectly with plug-on radio transmitters such as the Sennheiser SKP 100.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThe SM58 is the ultimate rock and roll microphone. It’s near-on indestructible, and, in case you do find a way to destroy it partially, almost every part of it is replaceable. There’s a very distinctive sound, which can’t quite be described as ‘transparent’ (actually, it can’t be described as transparent at all), but is more or less the definitive rock tone.

The Shure 58 has been around for forty-seven years. They were originally designed for clarity in speaking, and so have a lift around 10 khz, with a dip just below that, and a lift below that at about 4 khz. The frequency response is one part of the distinctive SM58 sound, which makes almost everyone sound a bit brighter, clearer, and more exciting. The other part of the sound is the very distinctive proximity effect. This is a feature of all cardioid microphones, increasing the bass when the microphone is close to the sound source. On the 58, though, this increased bass alongside the 10k lift has been exploited by musicians of every persuasion for decades, and is highly distinctive.

Everything about this mic is road ready. In fact, the metal casing is so robust you can drive over it with a van and it won’t mind, though you’ll have to remove the wind-shield and gently press it back into shape (more or less) after you’ve done it. While you’re doing this, you’ll notice what looks like foam rubber which is the internal pop-filter. It also features its own rudimentary shock mount, which reduces, though doesn’t entirely eliminate, handling noise. Underneath the windshield, this mic looks a lot like the SM57 (formerly the Unidyne), also a classic, and often found micing up large amplifier cabinets.

In the barrel there is a small transformer which gives this microphone its low impedance, balanced output. I once had a Shure 58 which was fifteen years old, and on the road for most of them. Eventually, the wires to the transformer had broken off. It was fairly fiddly, but entirely possible to retrieve it and resolder, though I never found out what the brown sticky stuff was (I think epoxy) which had lost its grip on the components over the years.

This version doesn’t include a switch. For that you need the SM58s. Most pros, though, would do anything to avoid having a switch on a stage mic, because you can’t do anything if a nervous singer flicks it off.

There’s also a wireless version of the SM58 available, though the body is much bigger, and less robust.

Female vocalists may find the sound a little too robust, especially with the intense roll-off going up to 15 kHz. To get over this, Shure released the Beta 58A in 1989, which looks almost identical, but is internally quite different and goes up to 16 kHz, with a less pronounced proximity effect. The extra 1 kHz adds in the high harmonics.

The only other variant in the 58 family is the cheaper PG58. This is an entry-level mic with a less even frequency spectrum. Many people find the sound a little thinner, though still distinctively Shure 58, and much more authentic than cheaper imitations. Physically, it doesn’t feel quite as robust, though it will probably outlast most other things on planet earth.

Shure 58s used to be a lot more expensive, and today’s versions don’t _feel_ quite like the older ones. That said, both the classics and the current versions retain the same great sound, and are equally indestructible.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersThese mics are the industry standard for working musicians. Rugged, and strongly made, they stand up to the rigours of gigging and the forever packing and unpacking that goes with the territory. The wedge shape stops them slipping out of your hands when being used. If dropped, they will usually survive, and should the mesh dome become dented, the dome can be unscrewed and the dent knocked out via some gentle tapping using a spoon being placed on the inside of the dome. I bought the mic without the on/off switch as with previous mics (not Shures)I have found they tend to go intermittent and this is a weak point. Always make sure the mic cable is not screwed up, but carefully folded in the ‘lay of the cable’ (i.e.do not twist it of fold it) as this can cause the cable wires to weaken. Happy singing you all.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersI had been using the fantastic AKG D5 for about six months before deciding to get this Shure SM58s as the extra. Everybody talks about the SM58 and I wanted to check it out.

The SM58 is now used regularly. The AKG D5 still competes and perhaps wins on smoothness and heaviness of sound, but the SM58 edges forward on clarity and accuracy.

Both are musical, powerful and rugged, but of the two the Shure SM58 is smaller in size and is much more resistant to feedback.

Ultimately, it is a matter of personal preference. I have SM58 days and D5 days and I use both when singing and recording. But if push comes to shove, and taking everything into consideration including the big price difference, it would be difficult but I would probably pick the AKG D5 as the overall winner. If price was not an issue, then I would declare the Shure SM58 the winner, mainly for its clarity and feedback resisting advantage.

This particular Shure model comes with an on/off switch. Unless you feel you really need that switch, you can buy the same microphone without a switch at a lower price.

This is a serious microphone, and you’ll love it. Recommended.

I have sung through SM58’s before and it seems spot on – Can’t believe I only paid 44 – I was all ready to make a vociferous complaint but if this isnt a genuine SURE then its a pin accurate replica!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is such a great product, easily one of the best investments I’ve ever made. It is very well built and has a nice weight to it. The mic seems very durable and built to last. For the price it’s a great buy, after all it is the industry standard. Great for live performance and sounds great for recording with too. The mic comes with a nice carry case and mic clip to attach to the stand. It is definitely worth pay a little extra for the switch as it gives you that bit of control when performing live when you may need to switch the mic off without messing around with controls or unplugging it. The mic has a really nice matte finish and it a very smart and sleek design. It is also great that this mic does not need phantom power to work which means it is much more volatile than other mics that rely on phantom power. Overall this is a really great product and I’d recommend it to anyone, it’s affordable and will last for a very long time, don’t be fooled in to buying cheap imitations, pay that little bit extra and get yourself a long lasting professional mic.

This is the legendary SM-58, bought for an un-and-coming rock star. Sounds pretty good to me. Arrived in perfect condition and in good time for Christmas.

As it says: INDUSTRY STANDARD. Great sound and very tough as well. Want some more of these. I’ve bought one on another webshop (e-Bay) but found out it was fake and did not sound so well as the original one. What you pay is what you really get.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA reasonably priced microphone with a solid build feel to it, a pleasing uncluttered appearance and a performance which is effective in many situations. I use it for single voice amplification for which it is very good, giving a solid bass response combined with a pleasing treble. It is not a microphone one has to stand on top of but it does not pick up too much extraneous sound.

    Recommended.

A good all purpose Mic for outdoor (Good strong wind sheild) use or studio and gigs, very well made too it can withstand a lot of knocks, drops, even extremely low temps and still sounds as good, though one bad point is its quite a bit quieter then most other Mics I’ve used so a good mixer/vocal FX unit is needed to boost the input.

I have been using the SM58 for many years and still have one I bought in the early 90’s. You can drop them, drive over them and generally forget having to tread lightly in a live situation. These things are built like a tank, constructed to last and give many years of great service. Bear in mind, the SM57 IS the SM58 with a different gauze head. whether mic used for capturing instruments from amps, or for vocal work, these are a hard act to follow.
I certainly wouldn’t use anything else for live work, although I have several condensers too.
    A good investment.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe classic, most versatile and still the best vocal microphone around for anyone in a band looking to perform at pubs and clubs. Always reliabe and for the price a worthwhile investment for any budding Robert Plants – nothing worse than sharing a sweaty mic so get your own!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe SM-58 is such a great mic, and it’s everywhere. Every rehearsal studio I’ve used has stacks of them. Most don’t have an off switch though, which is probably a good thing most of the time. I can see switchable mics really upsetting sound engineers, for example.

On the other hand, I sing whilst playing the drums, and it’s really handy to be able to flick the mic off during non-singing sections, especially energetic parts with lots of noisy breathing. It’s also helpful when soundchecking, as it’s rather easy to check if a particular switchable mic is causing feedback or not.

It’s not cheap, but it’s a great piece of kit.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThis was a really good buy. I am a singer in a function band and this suits me down to the ground. It is really well balanced so it’s easy to hold and it creates a really good sound.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersNo matter what your doing, talking singing shouting or using the SM58 for recording other instruments, It’s worth it.

The sound from the SM58 is amazing not like a kareoke mic in a pub,
even the President of the United States uses an SM58, that’s when you
know your using the best is when someone like that uses one.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersAfter many many years, the SM58 has established itself as the industry standard for live and studio vocal use for a number of good reasons:

    * It sounds great with most voices
    * It’s durable
    * It’s decent value for money
    * It’s good at rejecting feedback
    * It has become so established and widespread that people know what to expect from it, and how it behaves in a wide variety of settings, taking the guesswork out of things.

The SM58 has become a no-brainer for live stage vocal work and has many other uses as a general purpose workhorse. Buy with confidence.

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersYes, as everyone is saying, this is a brilliant mic. But why? It’s extremely solid, the sound quality it produces is warm and intimate, and it’s great for gigging because you hardly get any feedback from a live system. And this microphone is a bargain. I’ve had two for several years now, and they’re both still in great condition, because things just never break! Mind you, keep it in a box, preferebly in some of the original wrapping to keep the exterior finish looking sexy 😉 GREAT 😀

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersJust received it today and can’t wait to use it, looks very similar to my current Shure PG58. It sounds a bit normal comparing to PG58, was a little disppointed at the beginning and doubt if people are cheating me on the internet, but after playing with it for a while I found that it’s actually more accurate and crispy than PG58, the best vocal microphone I have used, haven’t used many though.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our Usersi got my first sm58 10 years agao and just recently had it in a bag at a show which also had a bottle of coke in it which burst and killed my sm58 off good and proper.

my sm58 was like a lil tank over these 10 years…used it live on stage,in practice and in the studio…not just for my vocals but also guitars and drums on some occations…since now it finally will not work after 10 years of a beating i would only purchase this mic again…i really do not think i could trust any thing else.

so all in all if you want a mic that is really over the asking price and such a bargin that will deliver everything you want from the sound to how tough it is then buy the sm58

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersThis is probably the most used professional mic in the World. Everyone I know that sings or needs a vocal mic seems to have one of these. They have very good operational qualities.

Golden Review Award: 35 From Our UsersThis is a great mic, undesputably the one you should buy for your home studio or for performing live. Comes with a little bag, but you’ll need to buy a cable of some sort.

I’ve used mine quite a bit recording on my computer, and the sound is crisp and professional.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersYou really can’t go wrong with this mic. It has a glowing reputation, and based on my experience, deservingly.

I have used so many terrible mics, some of which were much more expensive than this one. Of the mics I have tried (below 300) probably only 10% are worth keeping.

So buying a mic can be a bit of a lottery. And the SM58 is a guaranteed winner.
