Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFür mich die ergonomischste Vertikalmaus

Great mouse, great support, couldn't be happie
I’ve been using this mouse exclusively for a year and a half, and it not only improved my comfort but also has withstood daily use. Battery use is quite good, on one AA it lasts long enough I don’t remember when the last time it was changed. All buttons continue to operate normally, there is essentially no wear on it that I can tell. The neural problems I was having in my arm and wrist have improved, and I’m sure it wouldn’t have with a standard mouse or the trackpad.

Evoluent has been good to work with as a company, they were quick to notify me of a shipping problem at my time of order and helped get me a product that would work for me at the earliest possible time – they were proactive and helpful.

I do notice it tracking poorly before it actually indicates the battery is low. The mouse still operates, but there are hiccups that can be annoying but not really a problem – changing the batteries returns function to normal.

Their driver on OS X is really nicely made, but it’s not a perfect fit. I’m still on Mavericks, so no issues with installing or using it. The driver does not show up in the graphical portion of System Properties – you have to go to the drop-down menu to find it. Otherwise setting buttons is easy and clear.

    Great produc
Myself and my wife have used it for several months. I was sceptical at first but this is an extremely good product. The arm and wrist are now in a relaxed position. It is not until you try something like this that you realise how ridiculous the standard mouse actually is. Its not each but is really worth it if you use a mouse a lot.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis mouse has the most vertical position of the ones out there. It has helped my carpel tunnel tremendously. I have been using it for one year. Acquired following a carpel tunnel operation, very comfortable & easy to use – actually makes you wonder why the mouse wasn’t designed like this in the first place. Delivery very quick too.

Bought this product because I have serious wrist pain after long working hours. Was impressed by the comfort of using it – no need to twist my wrist and very good grip. It’s super quick and sensitive, love the click. Nice colour as well – the green logo would lighten up once it got plugged in. Have already recommended to all my friends.

Not black. But in every other way. Excellent.
Really prompt delivery from amazon. Colour isn’t very black though, more a mid grey silver, so a bit fed up about that, I suspect they sent wrong one- but least of my worries – I need to keep working and the flat mouse I was using was killing me. given the pain I was in, colour is least of my worries.

Ergonomically very good (I was using an Anker upright mouse before that dies in a few months – rubbish) and already my wrist is a lot better (after two days). highly recommended.

    Better orientation for extended use
Still not quite used to the extra button, but I find this a much better position for my arm (‘normal’ mice require you to cross your radius & ulna to use them & this isn’t good posture-wise. Pleased with my purchase!

Have been using the standard vertical mouse for sometime but this one suits my handsize better. Highly reccommended for reducing ergo issues associated with extensive computer use, I use it for CAD/3D and it is invaluable.

I could tell it was the perfect design for me
I have fairly large hands, this mouse fits perfectly. As soon as I unboxed it and gripped it, I could tell it was the perfect design for me. The whole thing can be reprogrammed. Even a non-techie could do it with the manager you can download. I’m going to be getting one for home and one for work eventually. The cord is plenty long enough, it reaches from my full-size office desk to the floor where the computer is located on the far left.

    Only 1 con so far:
The scroll wheel is very stiff and hard to click with (handy for closing browser tabs). However, the good thing about this mouse is that you can reprogram each button as you see fit. I just told the middle mouse button to behave as a scroll wheel click.

[Update dec 14 2015] Mouse still works like brand new. The coating where your palm goes has started to come off a bit, though I’m not personally bothered by it. I’ve had it long enough now that’s it’s second nature to use. I can play games (fps, wow…etc) as if it was a regular mouse. I’m pretty rough on mice and this is still kicking. I usually go through about 2 mice a year.

[Update June 09 2016] Still works like new. Still gaming with it. My other one at work (bought around same time) still works like new as well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe best of the vertical mice and in a size suited to the smaller hand
Ideal for the smaller hands of ladies and teens for whom the standard ‘Large’ version may be too big. Although male with moderately large hands, with the ‘Large’ version its controls were almost uncorfortably out of reach. With this version, they are well-placed.

Operation is extremely smooth on the desktop and the controls initially functioned very well and smoothly. However, after a couple of days, the user – with somewhat arthritic fingers and other related issues – was finding it increasingly difficult to control; sometimes things worked, but not always. Whether a problem with the mouse or personally is uncertain but, although less comfortable, working with another standard mouse is perfectly normal and feasible.

When ordered, the price of the model was rather less than is currently advertised, and therefore the value was substantially better at the lower amount. If a standard mouse is not what you require and you have the types of issues for which this type of design is ideal, then you will probably need to bite the bullet. You can find similar designs at far lower prices, but this is an instance where you definitely get what you pay for. The Evoluent products stand more than head and shoulders above the remainder.

Initially purchased for a work PC to reduce stress in wrists etc... I also find the vertical mouse position allows me to navigate faster and more precisely than a conventional mouse. Price may seem high but well worth it for something used all day every day. I recommend this product. ** Note to Plantronics : perhaps increase the durability of the sliding pads under the mouse.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersCompletely cured my RSI !
This mouse has been an absolute Godsend ! I started suffering from RSI and tried this. I must say it too about a week to get used to it. I am 3D styling so I sit in front of a computer for about 38 hours per day and I use all three butttons. On a normal mouse I use the index finger for the left mouse button and the middle finger for middle mouse button (or scrolly) and right button but with this I had to get used to using index for left, middle for middle and the ring and pinky for the right. (you can install the drivers so that the buttons are configured like a normal mouse but Ive found that this method utlises my fingers better so Ive stuck with it) Like I said it took about a week to get used to but I cannot stress how much of a difference it has made to my life. I can work all day with absolutely zero hand, wrist finger, muscle or any other pains or complaints.

The only reason why I have not awarded this product a full five stars is because after about four years the left mouse button sensor became faulty and when I clicked on it once it behaved as if it had been clicked multiple times. I contacted Evoluent but did not receive a reply. Seeing as there is nothing that can compete with this mouse I just bought another one. I do use my mouse a LOT, a lot more than an average mouse is used so I guess it has suffered but it just doesn’t feel as robust as a Microsoft mouse. If/when this one breaks I will buy another one.

Another great bonus is that a lot of people are amazed at the appearance of the mouse and often ask questions about it, they assume that I must be really good at my job (which I am) So it has the potential to provide many fascinating conversations, or if you can’t be bothered to do any work one day you can just squint your eyes slightly and look towards one of the top corners of your monitor while tapping the mouse. You’ll look like you’re thinking about a very complex mathematical equation and the tapping will draw attention to the mouse so everyone will just look at you and think ‘Wow, I wonder what time that handsome guy’s gonna solve the meaning of life’

This arrived this morning and so far so very good. It worked on my mac air immediately with zero install, and the download to set the buttons took two minutes and the choices are huge. It’s lighter than it looks, but that means it moves around easily – I was worried it would take some shifting across the desk. It’s also no way near as weird to use as I feared. The scroll wheel did seem further back than is comfortable at first, but tweaking how you hold the thing solves this. I imagine it’s more an issue if you’ve bought one too small for your hands. Go big. Button sensitivity is perfect, and all very well placed. I have been suffering with very bad RSI / TE – probably a mixture of both – for six months now and here’s hoping this helps, as my mac trackpad doesn’t seem to be: although it’s nice to have that on the left now to mix things up a bit. Will report back in a few weeks to see if this has helped my RSI.

I spend many hours at the computer and I had developed tendonitis in my wrist. I have been using this mouse for several weeks now and I have not more wrist problems. I had a little bit of a problem with it jumping initially but it resolved itself in a day. It took no time at all to get used to it. I would recommend this mouse.

Good mouse for the right situatio
A good quality product and I can understand that it’s good for people with wrist problems. My own issue is tennis elbow, add to that I have large hands – I found that this mouse did not ease the TE and despite being the largest size Evoluent, it was still a tad small for my hands.

Another issue for me is that the right-click function isn’t the click-bar immediately below the scroll wheel (see pic), but the bottom one and as that was my little finger resting point, I was continually right-clicking unintentionally. possibly it can be re-programmed, but as the mouse was nmot helping my TE I decided to return without further ado.

It’s well made, the clicking is soft touch and gentle so you can inadvertently click too much, but you do get used to the lighter touch. It isn’t cheap by any stretch, so I’d only buy if I knew it would ease a physical condition (and if that’s a wrist problem, I would suggest checking the “Penguin” mouse – better IMHO).

Four stars though for a good product.

    Good product.
Bought it after having serious discomfort in my forearm and wrist. It seems to have worked well, and even though I was a little wary of the price if I can use the computer a lot (which I need to for work) and not have any pain then that makes it worth while in my eyes. Good product.

    Mighty Mouse
I used one of these in my previous post and it certainly eased the problems that I was getting from my wrist and elbow. For this reason I decided to buy one for home use and it was also recommended by my then Health and Safety Officer. As I use a laptop and not a fixed PC I thought it would be better if I went done the wireless route, with no regrets so far. It was easy to install and I like the power button on the bottom so that you do not accidently waste the battery when it is packed away.

    Natural movement, great feel
So easy to use and feels natural. Having suffered tendonitis I find using a mouse that makes my wrist work from left to right upsets the balance whereas the vertical mouse is effectively working my wrist up and down but sideways if you know what I mean; in my opinion the way your wrist is supposed to move. Couldn’t live without this mouse now.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersKeep in mind that I have only been using this for a few days now, but I love it. I didn't want to pay the money for it at first, so I tried several other, cheaper mice, and none of them were as good. I went from standard keyboard and mouse at work and laptop at home, to a split keyboard at work and Logitech M570 at both. It was great for about 4 months. All of the wrist pain was gone. But then it came back much stronger and then my thumb started pulsating and going numb. I tried the Logitech Marble Mouse with the finger trackball, and it was the worst. I then, bought the Anker 2.4 handshake grip mouse (basically their cheap version of the Evoluent). It was better than a standard mouse and better than the trackball, but it still felt off. I used it for months, but it kept bothering me that I had to turn my wrist out of neutral position. I could feel it straining my forearm. So, I finally broke down and bought the Evoluent, and it is great. It is true about the shelf for your thumb being totally critical to the design. If the Anker had it, and rotated it ever so slightly, it would be great. Believe me, I would MUCH rather spend $20 on a mouse than $110, but the Anker now feels worthless and I'm probably going to have to buy a second Evoluent for work. But, it's a small price to pay to get to keep working on a computer. Stretching has helped as well.

    Deshalb sollte man einiges beachten.

I actually love it, but I had initial problems with it, hence only a four-star rating. The problem occured early on when the mouse kept crashing and only the left button would work. I had to contact the manufacturer and get detailed instructions how to solve the problem. That is my only bugbear with the mouse: The instructions seem to be a bit old and don’t mention any issues that may occur with Windows 8.1. But this issue was known about, so it would have been helpful if at least a slip had been added to the booklet, or the online instructions about what to do.
The mouse itself is very comfortable. I simply love the feel of it in my hand. And I really apprecate being able to configure the buttons to my needs. I got used to using them quite quickly and find that it’s making me work more efficiently.

It really did resolve my wrist problems (which I though were mainly due to yoga – turns out it was mainly due to the mouse I was using). Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThe Evoluent Vertical Mouse is a major improvement to the standard mouse. First of all, it is programmable. No more moving the mouse arrow up to the back or forward arrows. The thumb has two programmable buttons, one above and one below. I programmed one go backward and the other to go forward. I simply roll my thumb up or down to go backward or forward. The fingers have three programmable buttons. The top one I use as the standard left button, the middle is the same as a double click and the bottom is a right click. But there are programmable options to suit each user. The result is less moving the mouse around the screen. Moreover, the sensitivity of the mouse is controlled by a single button and displayed by the number of LED lights displayed at the top of the mouse. It's finest feature, however, -- and the number one reason I bought it-- is your hand is vertical, i.e., always in a natural position, not twisted as when using a standard mouse. As a result there is no more hand/arm ache and fatigue. The installation puts an icon on the task bar to make it easy to activate the mouse manager to reprogram the buttons in seconds. It takes a few minutes to adjust to the new feel and how you've programmed it, but within the hour, you'll bless it and never return to the standard mouse. It's worth its weight in gold to me.

    Evoluent Vertical 4 Wireless Mouse
I use a wired version of this vertical mouse at work and I experience risk ache when I used a traditional mouse. No I am using my PC at home a lot more for studying, I was experiencing wrist ache so chose this Evoluent Vertical 4 Wireless Mouse. I’m not disappointed – no wrist ache anymore. I would advise new users that you will take some getting used to the mouse when you first start using it, but after a few days you’ll be up and running and you’ll never want to go back to a traditional mouse again. A traditional mouse makes you bend your wrist to use it. The Evoluent Vertical mouse means your wrist is in a natural neutral position.

RSI Pain reduction achieved so I'm happy!
A nice quality product and fits my hand perfectly. The pointer speed feature is nice, which has enabled me to move around the screen with very little movement. I have RSI and did have pain reduction using this product, compared to a traditional mouse. I find it better to use with a wrist supporting mouse pad.

It’s certainly a pretty product to look at and feels quite luxurious for a mouse.

Make sure you check the Evoluent web site for size details. Getting the right size appears to be really important. Sometimes my PC is used by someone with a larger hand. They can use the mouse, but their hand position is more akin to a traditional mouse and they find it uncomfortable for longer periods of use.

carpal tunnel got me to buy this, the zelecam, a touch pad, a trackball and a mouse. I use them all in rotation, as they make me use my hand in different ways, so repetitive stress doesn’t have a change to occur. Expensive but VERY effective strategy.

Almost perfect but good enough. Sick of trying different mice!
Alright. I tried a lot of ergonomic mice lately in my effort to relieve pain from carpal tunnel. This is the best overall so far. I ended up returning the Anker Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse. I returned the DXT Precision Mouse and the LUGULAKE Vertical Ergonomic Mouse.

This mouse is by far the most comfortable overall. Here’s what it does well in my book of important points:

    -buttons are easy to press
    -multiple buttons
    -easy dpi adjustment
    -comfortable (for the most part)

    Here’s what I don’t like:

-collects finger grime like a magnet probably because of the smooth finish of the plastic
-the buttons get sticky a bit
-ring finger and pinky get cramped a bit and gets uncomfortable after a few minutes (now I can’t stand the feeling of it and I end up trying to put my pinky on the mousepad beside the mouse, but the darn edge keeps digging into my pinky)
-mouse tends to get “heavy” because your whole hand is resting on it and is noticeably harder to move than other mice I’ve tried so far
-that leads to whole arm fatigue
-i hate whole palm style mice with a passion that forces the whole arm to move (less accuracy and more effort required)

My ideal mouse is small and light easily movable with fingers. See my review on the DXT Precision Mouse.

I thought of trying this one or the Hippus Handshoe and chose this one because of the numerous positive reviews. I agree that this is a pretty good mouse, but far from perfect. But I think I will stick with this one because I’m so sick and tired of buying and returning mice.

In terms of pain, it’s lessened it almost to a point of no pain so it’s served its purpose.

Good but prefer the earlier versio
I have used the Evoluent 3 for some time with my home laptop and it has really been beneficial for my RSI. I wanted a similar model for my work laptop and have tried several of the cheaper types but find them too light as I like the chunky feel of the Evoluent. So I decided to spend the additional money and get an Evoluent again. The Evoluent 4 is quick and responsive and easy to set up, it is very comfortable and easy to use BUT it is lighter than the 3 so for me that stops it getting 5 stars. However I have been using it for a few weeks and am getting used to it which means I could have probably saved some money by buying cheaper and lighter in the first place.

I have used this left handed mouse for over two years now. I suffered with a mix of RSI and Arthritis in my left hand. I much prefer using this mouse over a standard mouse. It took a little while to get used to it. The neutral position has improved my pain level a lot, not completely.
My only real complaint is that the mouse feels flimsy(although it has withstood 2 years of knocks and drops) and that the coating on it flakes off easily. All in all I am happy with it.

I bought this because I am getting "mouse shoulder" and thought it would help. As soon as I started to use it, I realized that the vertical position is much more arm and shoulder-friendly. Nonetheless, I have had some troubles getting used to verticality, and I seem to be going back and forth between old mouse and new mouse. One of the issues is that I have been used to right-clicking with my middle finger, but the vertical mouse works best with my ring finger which is not yet trained. Also, it took me a while to figure out how to column-select text with this mouse, which I do fairly frequently as a programmer. A REAL plus is that technical support is a real live person, who seems to be working in America and speaks AMERICAN English. Now that I have the vertical mouse, I noticed that Evoluent also makes a keyboard with the numbers on the left side, which would make the keyboard more right arm friendly. So I am thinking about getting that but have not yet made up my mind whether to pop for it. Would give the vertical mouse a 5 star if I could just get my danged right ring finger trained.

Nothing Else Compares To Evoluent Mice
This is my second mouse now having owned a previous model in the range and used it to death over 4 or 5 years. If you have wrist problems just by it and don’t think twice as there is nothing which will compare on the market. When I got my first it changed my life I couldn’t even use a standard mouse due to wrist pain this Evoluent has been a really Godsend.

Quality mouse for those with hand problems/aches
It initially helped a lot for about a year but problems with overusing my mouse hand got worse. (I’ve been using mice every day for 25 years!) For me this was a good short-term solution to my poor aching hand but I found relief by changing to the Handshoe Mouse. It’s all down to each person’s unique problems. The quality of the Evoluent mouse is superb.

Great mouse for those with CTS but gets a little dirty
I spend my entire work week on the computer and when I’m not working, I’m on the computer at home. After spending so much time in front of the screen, using a regular mouse started to take a toll on my hand. I suffer from CTS and I was desperate to try something new. I had gone through many standard mice before I settled with this one. I tried an oversized mouse (I have big hands) and many “ergonomic” mice but none of them relieved the pain.

I had been reluctant to buy this mouse because of the price tag but it is definitely worth the investment. It did take some getting used to, but after about a week or two, it was pretty easy to work with. Slowly but surely the pain in my hand went away after sticking with it. To this day, I experience absolutely no pain while using this mouse. This is a great mouse for those with regular/large hands who need to spend long hours on the computer.

The only issue I had is like any other plastic mouse, you will get some gunky build up on the clickers if you have sweaty hands. It is annoying having to clean it everyday but the benefits greatly outweigh this small inconvenience.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersLess Hand Pai
I have trouble with ganglion cysts and was having some pain in my knuckles on my right hand. It seemed to get worse after a long day with my hand poised over my traditional mouse. I tried a Wacom pen and tablet for a week and that just slowed me down too much. My boss suggested I try his extra Evoluent mouse before purchasing one of my own (as they are quite spendy) and after a week my hand pain reduced considerably. I got the smaller version and I absolutely love it. I use this with a small wrist rest and my hand feels so much more comfortable and relaxed. I’m glad I got the smaller size as a woman I have smaller hands and the regular size was just a little big for me. This size fits perfectly.

I also went to the website and installed the driver program to modify the buttons and use the break reminder. Once per hour I get a little pop-up that reminds me to stretch and take a break. White working sometimes you get into “the zone” and forget to stop and stretch now and then. I find that exceptionally helpful as well and have been on the hunt for a widget that would gently remind me once an hour to pause. This mouse has helped solve two issues I’d been having and I’m so pleased with the results.

I have used the Version 3 for years which has helped with my arm/wrist pain enormously – in fact, it’s made the difference to being able to carry on working in IT.

This Version 4 Wireless mouse has a slightly nicer feel to it than the Version 3, and being wireless makes it easier to use.

The software it comes with makes it simple to program all the buttons, adjust the pointer speed DPI using shortcut keys, set click lock / auto click, as well as integrating with the usual mouse controls such as adjusting the pointers and wheel scroll increments.

    Terrific mouse, terrific service.
This mouse is great: middle mouse button off the scrollwheel (Linux users use the middle mouse button often), soft easy to click buttons, and variable tracking speed. Plus, the shape is very natural to hold and even makes my time at the keyboard more comfortable because I no longer need to twist my arm every time I use the mouse. I cannot recommend this device highly enough! Notice that your palm moves easily up and down, not side to side, so rotating it and using the ‘up and down’ motion (sideways) to move the mouse makes a big difference.

After 8 months the scrollwheel stopped functioning properly, I wrote to Evoluent to let them know and within the hour a representative offered to ship to me a new replacement mouse, even though I am not in the US. They don’t even require that I ship the defective mouse back (which is rather expensive from here), they only want a photograph of the destroyed device. I have to say that I have had trouble with hardware before, of all types from computer peripherals to automotive, and very rarely does one find a company with that level of service.

In any case, I highly recommend the device for anyone with wrist pain or arm pain for anything but graphical work. Everyone in my office loves the mouse, but my graphics designer feels that he cannot control it well enough in Photoshop. That was the only complaint I heard about the device after people get over the first five minutes of holding it. On my next trip to the US I plan on picking up another one of these to use at home as well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usershow will they improve on perfection?
I have severe nerve damage due to carpal tunnel because I used a computer mouse for over 25 yrs non stop until my left hand could take it no more. I was left handed but forced to use my right hand. I will never use another normal mouse again.

I am a avid mmorpg gamer and worried this would not work with the games such as rift, neverwinter, everquest 2 online games. I tell you it works perfectly for me.

I had no learning curve, all I did was download the drivers to use more of the buttons. The small fits my hand perfectly I wear a size 7 USA size glove. The thumb rest is so comfortable, buttons easily reached, along with the scroll wheel. I am giving 5 stars with my gratitude because of this mouse I can play my games again and use a mouse for work as long as the mouse is evoluent.

One word of warning the vertical mouse is large so do not think you can use a small mouse mat. I am back on amazon looking for a large hard surface mouse pad. I bought the kennsington wave that has red and black gel wrist rest. The pad is awesome and the mouse glides across the surface, but the problem is the surface is to small.

If someone could tell me which Mousepad they recommend with this that has a large surface I would appreciate it.

I am buying another evoluent today that is wireless, and one for my husband that is larger. Thank You again for in my opinion a perfect beautiful vertical mouse. One suggestion you only made a colored one in purple but I would also like to see the wireless come in different colors and sizes. I am going to try and use the left handed one with my left hand to see if I can use the hand again so I bought the left handed grey one even though I find the color boring. I love the red lights for dpi settings and also green logo. Keep up the great work and thank you agai

I love this mouse! I have, for years, struggled with wrist pain. I bought this mouse after the ergonomics people at my new job loaned me one and my wrist felt so much better!

There are a couple of drawbacks. Guests have a difficult time driving (that actually may be an advantage, come to think of it) because they are not used to the mouse, and I occasionally click the button above my thumb by accident.

Overall, I highly recommend this mouse!

    carpal tunnel relief
I’ve dealt with pain in my wrist for years. Using this mouse places my hand in the correct position and I feel instant relief from a constant throbbing pain that shoots through my wrist and causes tingling in my fingers.

I use the extra buttons to quickly close or minimize windows, and to go forward and backward in web browsers. I add up the seconds this saves me throughout a day and I’m very grateful. Plus it decreases aggravation when I don’t have to hunt for the Red X.

Everyone comments about the mouse looking futuristic. Takes a few minutes to get used to, so in that sense it keeps people off my computer. But I find the ergonomics brilliant.

I ordered my first mouse on February 25, 2011 and it suddenly died last week in August 2013. It was off when I got to work so I replugged it into the USB slot. It works for about 20 seconds then the lights flickered and it shutoff. I tried two different computers and contacted Evoluent technical support. They couldn’t offer a resolution, it seemed the circuitry just gave up. I went a few days with a regular mouse but now I’m happy to have my Evoluent VM4R back in my hand.

This is the second Evoluent Vertical mouse I have owned and personally I can’t work without them. I don’t understand why this isn’t the generic mouse shape as it makes no sense to me to use a regular mouse where your hand, fingers and wrists are forced into a non-neutral position which leads to pain and injury.

Using the mouse and my Microsoft Ergnomic Keyboard for the past 7+ years has completely resolved my previous painful RSI symptoms from which I no longer suffer. If I use a regular mouse and keyboard I start to get the pain again within days if not hours!

If you’re in two minds because of the price, I say just buy it – you won’t regret it!!!!

ergonomie ist unschlagbar effizient. verarbeitung mangelhaft. (kabelbruch)

    Great Ergonomics, Ok Quality
I’m a programmer and work on the computer all the time. I was starting to get some wrist pain, so I switch to this vertical mouse. The pain went right away. I’m not sure if it’s the design of this mouse that helped, or just the fact that I’m doing something different with my wrist. Either way, it helped.

However, the quality of the mouse feels lacking for the price, and it’s much more particular about the mousing surface than my old Logitech mouse. I make it a point to carry around my mousepad with me now. That said, I’ve had this mouse for nearly a year, and it’s still going strong, even with my heavy use.

Also, it takes about a week of heavy use, to get use to this mouse. If you play games, expect a handicap until you get use to this thing.

*Update! 2 1/2 years later this mouse is finally giving up on me. It’s started double clicking when I only click once. It was a good mouse, and I seriously put it through it’s paces, but there are cheaper options these days, so I’m going to replace it with a more affordable SHARKK wireless vertical mouse.

I don't release it from my poor hand
It is a great concept, a very thoughtful ergonomic design, my hand is relaxed and won’t bother me for a whole day of work, while resting on this mouse. The thing is not perfect, as nothing truly is, so here are my notes for the field of improvement:

    – Mouse claims to be very accurate, but something is clumsy in it’s operation, may be it doesn’t release or grab focus fast enough. While working inside a typical editing software (Word or Acrobat), I now often grab panels with buttons from the top of the software’s window, unintentionally;

    – There is no embedded way to reprogram the buttons, or to disable some of them. I often press one of the extra buttons of this mouse and it then sends a certain command to the computer, while I had no intent to do that. It slows down the work. I guess and hope, I can download software that will provide an extra app to let me reprogram the buttons, but it would be great to have a native embedded support. This way I wouldn’t be required to reprogram it on every computer I plug this mouse to, (and not to install its software on each such computer too)

But what to say, it’s a keeper. I also bought a travel version (smaller), but it does not feel as good as this one for my hand, not as resting.

Really really helps with wrist pai
I’ve had wrist pain for the last few years & it’s been getting worse. Taking extended breaks (several weeks) from using a PC / mouse helped but within a few hours of going back to using a mouse the pain was back.
A colleague recommended this mouse – expensive but after a day the pain was gone & hasn’t come back. It’s been 3 months now & I haven’t looked back.
It has lots of buttons which can be configured to replicate regularly used keys (e.g. default config for one button is double-click)
It’s a lot more expensive than a conventional mouse which is a pity but it’s a lot cheaper than several trips to the doctor, medication & other therapies.

    Unproblematischer Anschluss, Abheben fehlt seh

    Review for vertical mouse
I bought this product as I have a wrist problem and was advised that using this mouse would keep my arm and wrist aligned in a good position. Since using the mouse, I have noticed significantly less pain in my wrist than I would have with an ordinary mouse. It is so comfortable and I got used to it very quickly. I particularly like the fact that you only need minimal movement of the mouse for optimal performance. I would highly recommend this product whether you have problems with wrist and arm movement or not.

I, in general, love the Evoluent mice and won’t use anything else but the extended little finger guard means I’m forever pressing the bottom button (which in my configuration is browse forward) and the glowing Evoluent logo was so distracting that I eventually used a black marker to blank it out.

The pointer speed control, which I was concerned about hitting by mistake is entirely unobtrusive until required and the addition of a second, individual thumb button is a real boon.

Sadly the extended little finger lip makes using it an exercise in frustration for me so I’ve relegated it to emergency duty and gone back to using my series 3.

    Fantastic mouse
I was starting to get RSI in wrist and having problems in shoulders too.
I bought the righthanded V4 (small) about 9 months ago and it has made a HUGE difference to my RSI – I have no pain now.
I have not had any issue with flaking coating, sweat damage or programming like other reviewers(although to be honest I don’t use the thumb buttons)
I find the three buttons and scroll wheel on the right hand fine for me.
The mouse now has a loose connection but I feel this may be my fault for dropping it on the floor recently. I don’t see any option other than getting a new one of these. The expense is worth it to avoid the pain.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersPretty good mouse, terrible Mac drivers
This is the second Evoluent mouse I`ve purchased. Used one for a couple months at work and then bought the second one for home. After a few years of pain in my right wrist finally this mouse does the job. It is pretty good for everyday use and keeps the arm in a relaxed position – much less stress and strain than other mice I`ve tried – Intellimouse 3.0, Logitech MX-1100.

After the first day of using it carefully I noticed improvements – pain had minimized and wrist was still OK in the afternoon.

After one week I noticed that pain still can reoccur if I get tired and start moving the mouse using wrist instead of whole hand it was designed. Wrist has to remain still and fixed.

After one month I noticed that the joint between thumb and palm is hurting a little after I`ve spent hours leaning that place on top of mouse – the second problem when you get tired and start using the mouse in an easier but incorrect and non-ergonomic way.

    The good:
*) It keeps palm in a vertical position thus relieving and almost eliminating pain in wrist
*) It works via USB cable so is pretty lightweight and does not put too much stress on the wrist
*) The residual on the outside of it can be easily cleaned and I find coating to be very good for everyday use.
*) The driver utility is good for assigning custom actions to buttons – like “Ctrl+W”, “Ctrl+Tab” and others. Drivers are very stable on Windows.
*) nobody messes with my workstation at work – people get very confused when sitting in front of such fancy mouse and Microsoft Ergo 4000 keyboard with almost blank keys 🙂

    The bad:
*) The driver often goes crazy on my Mac ( Macbook Air ~2010 year ), causing 100% CPU usage by “EvoluentAgent” and I can watch the temperature my Mac going all the way up till the boiling point (100*C, ~212*F) where it reboots and remains terribly hot. Otherwise the driver works good – except this overheating thing. It happens even when mouse is not plugged in. It should be fixed in order to use this mouse on Mac with customized buttons. Once “EvoluentAgent” is killed, everything goes good right away, the temperature drops. Uninstalled the Mac driver instantly after the second overheating to avoid any permanent damage.

*) The button on top, right next to thumb gets pressed once in a while when grabbing the mouse. It should be more like “Logitech MX-1100”-style – a little smaller and harder to press. The same with the lowest button next to pinky – a little annoying while learning the correct way to grab a mouse.

    The neutral:
*) Initially I was surprised to find out that the part next to pinky is actually the 3rd button. Didn`t expect that. It can be assigned a keystroke like “Ctrl+Tab” but it took a while to accept that this part is a button instead of a hard surface.

Summing up the points I give this mouse 4 stars out of 5 – it is very good and almost eliminates pain in wrist when used correctly.
This is the best ergonomic mouse I`ve tried. If you can cope with buggy Mac drivers and easy-to-click buttons then try a vertical mouse – for me it is very good.

Great mouse - with some troubleshooting tips
I’ve owned the Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 Wireless for nearly a year. It is a great replacement over the standard overhand grip mouse, and has eased a lot of pain in my hand. It’s not the cure-all, but I think it has reduced pain for me by roughly 50%. I work in the office at the computer all day, and I play on my computer a lot when I get home, so an ergonomic mouse is a must for me.

Here are some tips if you decide to make this investment:
The battery runs out around every 5 months. The indicator light actually didn’t work but the mouse was lagging on the screen – super annoying. Just remember to keep some AA around and replace when you think the mouse is acting weird.

Just this week, my programmable buttons stopped working. I assign double-click to the big button and it just turned itself into right-click. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but still didn’t work. Finally, I decided to uninstall the drivers and remove all remnants of the Evoluent software from the Windows 7 registry and from any folders. Rebooted my computer and re-installed the drivers, and Voila, it’s working again. Instructions on how to uninstall from the registry is on the Evoluent website.

Overall I definitely recommend this mouse – make sure you download the drivers from the Evoluent website so you can fully program all the buttons.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersExcellent for RSI but need to persevere.
Like many other RSI sufferers, I spent a considerable amount of time looking into alternatives to the standard mouse. Although there are a lot of opinions out there, and different solutions that have worked for different people, I couldn’t find a definitive answer, and in the end opted to give the Evoluent product a go.

My first impressions were mixed, and for the first couple of weeks I was very concerned that I had made an expensive mistake. However, you have to remember that if you already suffer with RSI, then it is not going to disappear overnight! Also, you need to be very disciplined and ensure you hold this mouse as intended; it is all too easy to place your hand over it like a standard mouse.

Make sure you use the downloadable software to customize the buttons; there are a lot of very good options. It can be particularly useful to program one of the buttons to act as a ‘double click’ which cuts down the number of clicks you need to do. Also, be sure to set the sensitivity as high as possible. It take a while to get used to, but really cuts down on the amount of movement you need.

So, one month on? I am totally thrilled with this mouse, and my pain has pretty much gone. By week three, my pain was starting to subside and I was no longer requiring a daily dose of ibuprofen after a hard days computer work. I have gone from being in constant pain, to being virtually pain free.

This mouse will not be for everyone. Crucially, you need to be sure that your mouse is the primary cause of your pain, and not other things, such as your keyboard, posture, desk etc. Typically, mouse pain is noticeable by pain in your lower arm and/or wrist. But as part of an ergonomic solution in the battle to prevent or treat RSI, I heartily recommend it.

Was having problems with my wrist and shoulder at work as I spend 8-10h a day at the computer combined with a better posture have stopped the problem.

Is different to start with as your arm goes to a unusual albeit better position stick with it and you will be fine.

    good ergonomic mouse
This is the second one of these I’ve bought. I’m not left handed but have to use my left hand for mouse work owing to previous overenthusiastic use of a small and especially unfriendly laptop years ago. The configuration of the buttons takes a bit of getting used to but becomes second nature after a while. If you’re a mac user, buy the steermouse application. This makes your mouse highly configurable and reduces mousing to a minimum.

Forearm Pain Much Better After Getting This
Spending this kind of money for a mouse was a leap of faith, but I am glad I did it. I had read several reviews on several web sites and many of them said not to get this mouse if you are into gaming. Since I only use it for work, it’s not an issue. However if you are looking for a gaming mouse, I’m sure there are better options for the price.

I was having issues with forearm soreness since I had been using a “traditional” mouse for several hours every day. However after getting this mouse I noticed a significant reduction in pain after just one week. Someone said that it takes a few days to get used to this mouse, but I was comfortable using it right away. The design, for me, is very intuitive and felt natural from the first use.

I also like the installation CD which allows you to customize buttons. As mentioned, having the bottom right button as the right click is a little unusual, so I needed to customize the buttons. Keep in mind that you will need to keep the application running in the background in order for the mouse to “remember” your settings. If you close the program it reverts to the defaults. This is really a non-issue though since the software is not resource intensive at all.

Overall, I recommend this mouse if you are experiencing forearm pain. Five stars for doing what I bought it to do. Oh, and it looks cool too.

I bought a couple of these mice for people in my office who are having problems with wrist pain from using regular mice. I have done some work on their computers and noted that when using this mouse your hand falls in a very natural position. They haven't complained about the mice at all and have stopped complaining about wrist pain, so either these mice have been helpful or offer a very convincing placebo effect. I have to say, though, that there is a learning curve associated with them. The few times I've used them I've been exasperated by the location of the buttons and the general function. I've been using regular mice for many years now, so my "muscle memory" is attuned to them. Suddenly switching to this product was quite difficult, and I still get a sense of dread when I need to work on computers that are using this type of mouse. That's probably a very personal problem, though. In all fairness I have to say that the Evoluent mouse is sturdy, well-built, and responsive. It also seems to be ergonomically designed to help keep the wrist and hand in a natural position. Long-term use would probably be beneficial. I'm happily recommending it, noting that it takes a bit of getting used to.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat for helping hand pain (not that great on some surfaces)
I recently developed a crazy pain in my right hand and wrist because of spending 12-16 hrs/day on a computer, mousing. I usually use the magic trackpad but I think that it may have been one of the causes for the wrist pain. So I tried a bunch of different mice, including the logitech mx performance, but this mouse is definitely the best for relieving pain. It’s very comfortable. You will need a few days to get used to it most likely but after you are used to it, the experience is great.

The negatives are that the mouse often does not work on many surfaces (glass, reflective wood finish, etc.). I always had to get a mouse pad for it. Also, the wired version is entirely too light–sometimes the cord dictates the direction of the mouse. The wireless version is excellent–it is heavier than the wired version and just has a good feel to it.

The silver-looking rest are for your thumb collects dirt and dust very easily. This is a minor annoyance. Another slight issue is cursor movement and precision–both are definitely nowhere near as precise as on the logitech mx performance, for instance. However, I’ll gladly make the tradeoff right now to relieve the wrist pain.

Overall, this mouse is great for making pain in hands and wrists go away. However, from a precision and versatility standpoint, the mouse is only average. Also, no Mac drivers=( The lower button in the silver area just mimics the primary mouse button click.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersHelps relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome pai
By spending many hours working with a PC, I’ve recently developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms. Trying to find a solution; I’ve tried many devices including Apple’s magic Pad, Logitech’s 510, MX & G-700 as well as the Razer Naga. After a couples of weeks using each of these I could not perceive any reduction in pain. By opposition, after two weeks of using the Evoluent 4, my pain had reduced most significantly. It does take about a week to get used to the different grip of this “vertical” mouse but it is well worth it. I would strongly recommend it to anyone experiencing pain associated with CTS.

I would recommend downloading the most recent drivers from the Evoluent web site. Drivers are available for Mac’s. The software allows you to re-progam the 6 buttons on the mouse. On this topic I’ve noticed that the lower thumb button is often accidentally depressed when manipulating the device. To this end, I would recommend not associated any specific commands to this button.

    Wie auf Wolke
    September 2012:

Schmt euch!

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersGood, but is it the best?
I’ve bought lots of mice and other pointing devices and so far the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is the best that I have.

Pros: Keeps your arm and wrist in a more natural position reducing RSI

Cons: This mouse is pretty vertical but not 90 degrees. Your hand is at an 80-85 degree angle and when you move your mouse sideways your wrist is at a slightly awkward position. If your hand is positioned at 90 degrees exactly, then it’ll be much better.

The wireless version has some problems.
    1. It’s heavier which will strain your hand/wrist more.
    2. It doesn’t work on some surfaces that the wired version has no problem with.
    3. It occasionally makes your cursor skip around. This may be due to having too many programs opened, but the wired version has no problem. (I use a wired left hand version and a wireless right hand version. I switch off every 1/2 hour or 1 hour.) The skipping is not due to the battery since when I use the mouse on another computer it doesn’t skip.

Still, I recommend this mouse since it’s better than everything else that I’ve tried. I would go with the wired version but just make sure that the wire is positioned so that it doesn’t affect movement.

Well put together, if rather expensive
The Evoluent vertical mouse is better than the competition, if rather expensive.

I use two mice, left and right handed, and have replaced both with Evoluent mice – recommended if working long hours, to allow each hand to rest. They are comfortable for extended use, providing a good hand position.

Including a hardware button to change mouse sensitivity is handy, and this works independently in the case of two mice, so one can be used for more precision if required.

The right-handed version works on a range of surfaces, while the left-handed mouse seems limited to felt-like mouse pads.

Poor placement of the additional buttons, which by default are set as back and forward buttons, can be a little annoying, as they are easily knocked when reaching for the mouse, but can be disabled.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGreat Ergonomics. Non-existant support. Poor driver.
As a vertical comfort mouse, this is brilliant. With no arm twisting required to use the mouse, it is surprising how relaxing it is to use.

The only down side is Evoluent themselves: Their driver, which is required to use to lower left button, is dismal. The “middle button” functionality is broken and after a few sleep/refresh cycles, random button presses stop working. Evoluent do not respond to emails.

Very comfortable to use and fits a small woman’s hand perfectly. It’s worth using the re-programming facility to change the right click to the middle button rather than the bottom one, which is hard to reach. The only drawback is that it is easy to knock over, being vertical.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersComfortable and Effective Mouse
Having suffered with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) for over 12 years in both hands, I finally resorted to having open release surgery following the recommendation of my consultant. Following surgery, I was advised by my occupational therapist that I needed to review my ergonomics when using a mouse and keyboard. As a heavy user of a PC at work (I am not an IT professional, but use a PC a great deal in my job), it was recommended that I consider a new input device instead of the traditional horizontal mouse. Initially, it was suggested that I consider using a vertical mouse, such as the Evoluent. However, I decided to investigate alternatives before making a final decision. As part of this process I tried a Bamboo touch tablet by Wacom and the Logitech M570 trackball mouse, which were both very good. Not being a heavy graphics software user, and also being so used to using a mouse, I found the transition to a pen and tablet a little awkward. I also found the trackball caused me to develop a sore thumb. I then decided to investigate the Evoluent mouse and read the many reviews online. I also watched several YouTube review videos. Initially, I was put off by the high cost when compared to other ‘traditional’ mice. Finally, I took the plunge and ordered the Evoluent mouse from Amazon. I am so pleased I did. The mouse does exactly what it is meant to do – place your hand in the neutral vertical position. As I still have a fresh scar from surgery and am still very sore and tender, I have found the Evoluent mouse to be excellent and helpful when relieving the pressure on my carpal tunnel and the median nerve. The mouse is constructed of materials similar to a good quality mouse – but doubt it will last forever (nothing does!). I have also found the mouse simple to configure with the driver downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It installed very easily on my Windows 7 x64 PC. My only slight issue is the bright Evoluent light and the green tracking sensitivity lights – but let’s face it, you don’t look at your mouse when using your PC. If you have TCS or RSI, don’t hesitate – buy one! I wish I had done so well before my surgery. Another tip, visit the Evoluent website before ordering to ensure you buy the correct size. The website includes a downloadable hand template that you can print out for the large mouse. This will enable you to confirm the correst size of mouse to buy. My wife finds the large Evoluent mouse too big for her hand, but it is just perfect for me. If you have multiple accounts on your PC, you may need to consider using two input devices to suit the hand sizes of all users. Finally, like all specialist equipment, it needs to be reduced in price.

This mouse is an elegant shade of metallic purple. It fits my partner’s small hand very well, and performs excellently as a mouse.

It can be set to various different resolutions. It worked well on my partner’s old XP Laptop and runs equally well on her new Windows 7, 64 bit computer. You can get basic functionality with the Windows mouse drivers, but it performs better and can be customised more easily if you download the correct drivers from the Evoluent web site.

It reduces the pain of RSI for my partner, and so was a very worthwhile purchase.

This product is a real saver of your wrist – the mouse is held differently from other mice, but I’ve got used to it throughout the first day and don’t want anything else since. I’m a heavy user as i work in Technology industry and in the past I suffered from pain in my wrist. This is now all gone after 2 weeks of using this mouse. Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersWhat elbow pain...?
If you are a graphic designer, just stop reading and buy this mouse. The idea behind it is brilliant and since you are a designer, you hugely appreciate brilliance when you experience it. After a short while, your wrist, elbow, and sometimes shoulder pain will be gone, as will the hideous browsing-bump on the heel of your hand that grows in direct proportion to your mouse-time.

Believe it or not, the evoluent software is actually great. I thought the idea of an automated alarm telling you to stretch for 1 minute and then telling you to get back to work would drive me crazy, but the opposite is true. I stretch and then drop down and rap out 25 push-ups and it’s better than a cup of coffee.

    A couple musings:

You WILL get told by people who see it (guys) and try it out that it feels like holding a hard-plastic breast. It will then be impossible to remove this analogy from your thought processes.

If you run Windows 7, do not EVER customize your taskbar setting to hide the icon for the evoluent software. I made this mistake and there is no correcting it without a clean install of Windows 7. A registry bug that is virtually unfindable results from doing this, and no amount of uninstall and reinstall will correct it.

There is an awesome button you will love that allows you to switch to an excruciatingly precise cursor speed, which is greatly helpful in the design world.

    Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

I’ve had an Evoluent mouse at home and at work for quite a few years and I love it – I started getting twinges in my wrist but never since I switched to one of these mice (obviously YMMV, I’m no doctor). If anyone in my office starts having problems we get them one of these.

With the the “v3” mouse, there were drawbacks like sometimes the chrome could peel off (although not on either of the ones I use), and your little finger got dragged over the mousemat all the time. I’ve used a v4 for a couple of months and it’s a lot more comfortable with the little ledge but it’s too soon to say whether the chrome is more robust.

    Was mich aber strt:

I thought nothing could beat the old Evoluent Mouse 3, but now I have the 4 – and it’s awesome. Everything from the slightly tweaked design to the purely visual back lit logo all scream quality. If you’ve ever suffered from hand, wrist or arm pain after mouse use, try this baby out.

Even if you own one of the other upright mice (mouses??) out there – including other Evoluent models – This one delivers on all those little things you knew could improve the others: Better pinky support so now no part of the hand touches the mouse-mat, extra thumb button (as a gamer this was the clincher!), improved contact points between mouse and surface, and better, on the fly access to the mouse DPI settings is a god-send for Photoshopping. Even the driver software is just packed with tons of options. I seriously can’t for the life of me understand why people use normal horizontal mice anymore with stuff like this out there.

    Pros:
Good size for people with large hands (they offer a small size too, oh and left handers).
6 buttons make this a competitive gaming mouse.
    Comfortable from the word go.
    On the fly DPI settings.
Nice Rubberized feel on the palm.

    Cons:
Not the cheapest mouse out there.
