Worked immediately
I’m new to Alexa so completely new to the technology. It worked immediately after setup. The only drawback was you need a tp link number and it wasn’t totally clear what this was and how to get it. You just have to sign up to the website. You don’t get a ‘number’. Spent ages trying to figure out where the number was but I guess it is assigned once you sign up. Anyway. It seems you only need to do this once as I bought other plugs and bulbs and the set up was immediate.
This has changed my life!
Not joking – this has changed my life. Forget to turn your bedroom light off and your housemates are complaining that the house looks like Blackpool illuminations? Get on the app and click it off with the touch of the button from the comfort of the settee! Got comfy in bed before realising you’ve yet to turn the light off? Just switch to the Tapo app and click it off! Loveeeeee
Easy to set up, easy to use
Not tried these with Alexa but work brilliant the tape app. I use them with the webcam to control sockets from wherever I am. Have them.on my 3d printers, heat presses etc – failed print means I can turn the machine off and save wasted filament and mess. Did I remember to turn the heat press off – yes but now I have peace of mind that I can do it from another room or home if I did forget.
Really easy to set up and simple and reliable to use
Consumes less power than my non connected plug time
Had to create a tp-link account username and password just for the software, instead of being able to use an existing Google or Amazon account OAuth link. So 2 stars for ease of setup.
Top is noticeably warm to the touch, but consuming only 1.0-1.4 W what’s on/off still compares favourably to another brand ‘non’ connected timer which consumed even more at 1.7-1.8 while doing less frankly.
Worth using as an energy saving timer for me as on standby my kit was consuming 10W unused.
Very easy to install and control using Tapo App and Alexa
Only had a few days but It was very easy to install with the Tapo app on my phone which gives easy on-off functionality as well as timer.
Partner had the Alexa app on her phone and also easy to set-up and so can also use voice command to turn on.
Time will tell about durability but I’m really pleased with it and would recommend.
Update – just purchased another one as so impressed- using first one to turn on electric blanket just before going to bed and while still downstairs and then use timer which is set to turn it off automatically after 15mins – perfect!
A great entry point into smart home automatio
These are great. Super easy to set up. I’ve got 8 of them. I use them to control lots of lights and a TV. They are hooked up to Google home so I can control them using timers, location or my voice. (Great if you’ve got your hands full and need to turn the lights on.)
I’ve used another brand in the past and these are way better. Much easier to set up and have a quieter operation. (There is still an audible click when the switch on or off, but it’s a lot quieter than the other brand we had.)
The only issue to watch out for is, if you use a lot of them and have a lot of other devices connected to your WiFi router, you might experience some signal congestion which means problems connecting or maintaining connection to your WiFi router. We had this with the router provided by our internet provider, so we upgraded to an ac3200 router which fixed everything.
Excellent Smart Plugs - Work perfectly with Google Home Hub
Bought a set for myself to try out and a set for my dad. I have a Lightwave RF system at home, which is excellent, but expensive and requires a hub. These don’t require any hub to work and they work perfectly with my Google Nest Hub. Very easy to install and set up. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an easy way to control your lights automatically, via timers or dawn/dusk settings – including variable one’s, to add a delay or via voice. Nothing beats saying Lights Out to the hub and the lights turn off etc.

Good produc
This product works well with Alexa via echo dot and/or app. It’s easy to install and use as a basic on/off tool however the timer function has not worked/worked well (may still figure out what’s going on!). Anyway, it’s doing a great job for a harder to reach plug which is used for a standard lamp and the second one for controlling another light.
Good value, perhaps better instructions would help.
Reliable tech.
After buying 4 Tekin smart plugs that didn’t work I was unsure about trying another make but can honestly say these are great and now have 5 of these and several Tapo smart bulbs around the house. All working perfectly and installation was easy. The Tekinsmart plugs I purchased have been tried by friends and they could not get them working either. I’d always go for these in the future and recommend them to friends.
Worked for three months, lost internet, now restored
Worked fine for the first three months but one day, for no apparent reason, it lost internet connection. The light went solid orange. Wasted hours trying various steps advised by the app but nothing changed. Then I asked here and got good advice. Unpair, then long-press the button and run the setup again. Like a Charm!
Docking one star for poor user manual. Many thanks to responders here.
Smart plug integrated with Google home devices
I bought two TP-Link Tapo Smart Plug to replace mechanical ones.
You need download the TP-Link Tapo app in Google Play Store. And an account is needed to use the app to manage those plugs. I have added those plugs easily to the app and then I have linked them to Good home devices. I can use voice control to turn on/off those plugs via Google Home Hub and Mini. A schedule can be set too.
I play those plugs every day 8-). I am happy with those smart plugs.
Highly recommended.
easy peasy
So after reading the reviews i didnt have much hope of being able to install these without issues.
i downloaded the app plugged them in and everything connected. Alexa instantly found the plugs and have been happily using them since i received them. I have a sky router and didnt have to change any settings. i dont know how safe they are but i only use them for lamps and tv and turn them off when i leave the house or go to bed.
Does everything you need it to do.
Use with google home, works well.
have set up things from heating to speakers to kitchen fan.
Set up is a few easy steps.
Simple app with clean interface.
Access control outside of wifi is the winner for me. E.g. turning on heat before you’re home etc.
App features schedule, random (e.g. for lights when away) and count down timers. Can also activate via sunrise/sunset +/- time.
Product is tidy and minimal, with a on/off button on side also.
Using about ten of then now and highly recommend them.
Have recommended to family and friends and they too are all very happy with them. Well priced.
Flawless immediate operation, App lost a star though... (UPDATED)
My first try of home automation and Alexa. I have had a good experience with TP-Link network devices and Apps in the recent past so I took the plunge with 4 of these P100 units especially after reading some horror stories in reviews of other similar products! Unit is small, nicely built and easy to place. App is straightforward but a little “clunky” during device “adoption” and has a number of bugs again during “adoption” which need addressing by TP-Link. One star lost for that. Once operational the App works flawlessly, schedules do exactly as you require them to do. Alexa integration works first time and every time immediately.
Looks like TP-Link have delivered again. Will buy more in time but I will wait a while to see if they sort the App out a bit.
Update: These worked so well I bought another 4. The second set of 4 were hardware version 1.0 whilst the first set were 1.2. The second set were “adopted” and configured perfectly by the App first time unlike the first version 1.2 hardware set. Raised to 5 stars as this seems more appropriate.
Very good smart plug and at a good price!
Having searched through quite a few smart plugs before buying I reckoned this one looked pretty good, and thankfully it’s turned out to be great. It was very easy to install and setting up the app on my smartphone was easy, as was integrating with Google Home (I’m sure it would be just as easy to integrate with Alexa!). Compared with other smart plugs the price was very good, and I was impressed with the compact form factor. Very pleased, and will almost certainly buy more in the future.
Great little device
Love this little item.
Use it for charging my phone as I don’t trust the overcharge protection and like to put my phone on charge over night. I connect my phone to the charger, turn the socket on via the app, see how long my phone says it needs to charge and set the timer for about 5-10 mins before that. Then I can go to sleep and wake up with a charge phone without leaving it on constant charge and affecting the battery life.
Great for aquarium lights scheduling
I already own some Tapo devices but this is my first smart plug.
Bought it for aquarium light scheduling and it does the job perfectly.
Connection was straightforward especially if you have another Tapo devices (so you have Tapo app installed and registered). If not, it won’t take a long time to install and configure everything in Tapo app.
It showed in Alexa immediately. Schedule set and there are no problems so far. (Got it for about 2 weeks now)
Well made produc
I’ve read bad reviews on this brand of product that it has drop outs and is hard to set up and that it isn’t as good as other more *expensive* products!?… after purchasing Tapo bulbs (white and multi coloured) their WiFi plugs and even one of their indoor security cameras for home ease of use products I have found that “IF” you follow the simple installation instructions they work perfectly well for domestic use and for the money they’re hard to beat. 5 stars from me.
Works with google home - but not easy
As others have said, the google home function isn’t as easy as expected. No instructions for that in the box. You have to add the functionality within the google home app. Other than that, it works well, has a nice on / off click but not sure if that’s google or the plug
They just work as they should, perfec
I initially bought one to see if and how they work. Setup is so simple, just download the Tapo app and it is so simple. You need to initiate Bluetooth at first so the app can find the plug, then you connect to your wifi. It’s amazingly simple and saves me a load of problems.
I have been through manual timer switches for my vivarium and fish tank lights, the manual timers are bulky and always breaking and not reliable. These switches solve all those problems so I bought two more and they are all on the one app. I don’t use smart speakers so I don’t know anything about how they work.
No problems at all
I was reluctant to buy this after reading some of the negative comments. However, whenever a WIFI controlled device is concerned, it’s almost certain the problem is to do the users’ wifi or their technical aptitude.
I wanted a device to control some appliances remotely in my mother’s home and this fits the bill perfectly. IT took me 15 seconds to get it up and running an a further 60 seconds to set up a timer schedule. The interface is very easy to use and there are huge variety of functions to choose from. I have some other unbranded wifi sockets but this is far smarter and easier to setup and use. I am so please that I am going to buy 2 more of these.
Easy to set up, nice simple controls
Wow, this is my first experience setting up WiFi smart plug, and my hopes weren’t high…I’ve had other smart devices and bulbs though. I was pleasantly surprised. Really easy to set up, using Bluetooth for initial communication with phone, before setting WiFi. the plugs were not bulky compared to others I’d seen. I am really pleased with my purchase. The 4 smart plugs were good value.
An issue with the tapo app: when you provision device it’ll forget the name, group and icon you set and you’ll have to set again.
Issue with Alexa app: groups you’ve already set in the tapo app are not communicated to Alexa, only name is.
Other than that, absolutely brilliant. Let’s hope they last! I want to automate everything in my house now.
Tidy little things
I don’t often leave reviews but I felt this deserved it. I bought 4 because I have 4 lamps in my living room and rather than turning them on and off one by one leaving me in the dark, I would prefer to just say ‘Alexa, lamps on’. I came across these plugs, debated how good they would be for the price and considering how much Hue is, I didn’t think they would be great but I’m so impressed. They were so easy to set up. Around 10 minutes to do all 4. These are my first smart plugs and the first time I’ve really integrated Alexa with anything like this but now I feel that the only way forward is to go round my house and figure out where I can use more. Really impressed!
Great buy 5 *
I absolutely love these plugs I bought another one. Great for when I had my Christmas tree up so the lights were on when I came home from work.
I also love that I can control my lights from my phone with the app. Im thinking of plugging my straighteners into it when we can go out again. I will never worry I have left them on agai
Recommended - Great plugs at a good price
These TAPO smart plugs are certified/recommended for use with Amazon Echo products.
They are smaller and cheaper than the Amazon smart plugs.
They’re easy to add to your network (via the TAPO app that you need to download on your phone). Integration is via bluetooth between your phone and the plug – you have to be right next to the plug for the phone to discover it. You can then use your Alexa app to add the plug as a new device.
I have three of these set up at home with lamps on each, and you can control power, routines, etc. through Alexa.
I’ve had the two plugs in the bedroom drop off the wifi and become unresponsive once, but you just reset by unplugging and re-plugging in. You can make any set up adjustments through the TAPO app.
(Tip: add to Alexa as a Plug, then change to a Light in the Alexa app, then you can control a room by saying “Lights Out”).
Good value, easy to use and recommended.
Great for out of reach lamps
Bought for Christmas tree lights and configured with both Tapo & Alexa app.
Was great being able to ask Amazon’s Alexa to switch on/off the Christmas tree lights when we were leaving the house/at bedtime.
The tapo app also allows you to schedule a timer and switch them on/off when outside the home too (although we struggled getting the timer to work properly as the kids kept switching it on/off, so didnt bother with that feature in the end).
So happy with this we bought a 2nd and post-Christmas we are using with our living room lamps instead.
Quick and easy to setup and just works
I recently bought this after returning a Meross smart plug (Apple Homekit, Amazon, Google) that just refused to be setup, despite many hours of trying to connect to the smart plug Wifi, or using Homekit to connect to the device.
Anyhow, I digress. I saw a number of reviews of the TP-Link Tapo P100 and thought I’d try it out.
It arrived, I took it out of the box, downloaded the app and switched the device on.
Using bluetooth (how novel eh?) the app found the device pretty much instantly, started the setup, asked for the wifi password and after a few minutes the smart plug was setup and working in Google Home.
I then went into the Alexa app, installed the TP-Link / Tapo plugin and it discovered the smart plug as well.
That’s it. All done in 10 minutes, no problems. Much, much, MUCH more simple than the Meross.
Would happily buy again.
Great little remote plug
Bought one of these after being impressed with their Tapo cams, and it was on an Amazon deal.
Best features for me are that it’s app-controlled with no nonsense (you don’t need Alexa, but you can use it if you want), that it a simple set of controls, it can switch the full 13A, and there’s not too much fiddling. The response time is very impressive, even remotely.
The initial setup process is simple – turn it on, load the app, join the plug’s internal wifi, tell it the details for the wifi you want it to use, it then just restarts and appears on the app. The connection is good (even though it can only use 2.4GHz wifi), I have several devices connected and streaming all day long and they never go offline even when one is a floor up, one a floor down, and another at the opposite end of the house.
Overall, I can’t fault them, especially for the price I paid.
Finally I can switch on the kettle in the early mornings from bed!!! (It’s the small things in life!)
So easy to set up that even nana here was able to do so under 2 minutes flat. Easy solution for some luxuries, at a great price.
Fantastic!
These little gadgets have made daily living so much easier! Currently use them for various “dumb” lights and appliances that don’t have built in switches or are in inconvenient places, such as fairy lights over the bed and a pedestal fan behind the sofa in the lounge. They fully integrate with Google Home (sorry haven’t tried Alexa) and can also be manually controlled from the Tapo app or as a backup from the plug itself. They set up in barely a couple of minutes and are unobtrusive.
Dont look any further.
I have tried few smart plugs but had no joy because I got 5 ghz router supplied by sky and alot of these smart plugs only work on 2.4 ghz but this Tapo plug has worked perfectly I do have few Tapo IP cameras as well I just added the smart plug device on my existing Tapo app and just under one minute smart plug starting working. Absolutely brilliant plug this is with perfect control and I would Reccomend this to every one. Thanks
Simple, yet effective smartplug
I purchased this to save me from hearing the infernal buzzing/ticking of a timer. Looking at digital timers only carried out one job. With the Smartplug I have complete control.
Alexa makes that even easier even from a different room. Alternatively the app allows me to turn it on and off, as well discreet button on the side of the plug.
My only regret is not purchasing a multi pack for other locations in the home
Easy setup – Once the app is installed, which is just a case of following the qr code, the Samrtplug is ready to go.
Timer – Very straightforward to setup. It can either be for a specific time over over a period days, weeks or months.
Alexa Integration – With just a few taps in the app you’re all connected to Alexa. Remember to rename the Smartplug in the Alexa app or it’ll will be known by it’s factory name.
Fabulous little timer and great app too
Love these so much I have them all over the house! I have them in my grand daughters room to control when power goes to her electronic devices, as a timer on my vivaria and on my fish tank.
Really easy to set up and use. The tplink app is reliable and easy to install and use.
I have recently bought a to link indoor camera that works on the same app.
Really impressed
Great value for money
Great value and good integration.
Piece of cake to set up. App works very well in the house and remotely. I found it easy to set up a timer function while away over Christmas. Amending also very easy. I now use Alexa to operate some of these. One single one for the bedroom and two at the same time in the living room with ‘turn on lights’ command. You just have to give the routine a name that you can then use. Not exactly low profile but that’s not an issue for me. They don’t block the next socket either.
Quite easy to setup... then it just works :)
This is a handy little device that works well. Setup is pretty straightforward, though there are a few steps to it. The setup guide is very clear and you shouldn’t have much trouble. For ease, make sure your Bluetooth and Location are turned on before you start, and have your Wi-Fi password handy. Don’t worry if you don’t already have a TP-Link account, you’ll be prompted to create one.
After initial setup though, it gets even easier. The Tapo app is intuitive and allows you to manually control the plug, or set timers and schedules. It just works. If all you want is a basic Wi-Fi controlled plug, this is great.
Very versatile - useable with or without Alexa or alternative smart voice commanded assista
The dedicated ‘Tapo’ app enables smart actions to be programmed for a single or mutliple Tapo plugs on the same network.
A feature of the Tapo plugs that I found particularly useful is the ability to programme the switching on or off at times related to the local dawn and/or dusk times, which, or course, vary throughout the year. This feature enables the avoidance of dedicated physical, i.e. wired, external dusk to dawn sensors while retaining their functionality.
While the Tapo plug is compatible with Alexa, etc., the programmable features offered by the Tapo app enables smart functionality independently of additional smart assistance.
Worked with latest software
As delivered it did not work fully (you could not re-access 50% of the 4 units once set up). I started a messaging conversation with the manufacturer which was cumbersome but at least they responded quickly. Then I updated the software again while troubleshooting and the fault disappeared. After that they worked fine. Great for Christmas lights in various parts of the house. So they have worked for a 6 weeks. Will have to see if they last; they replace a cheap 4 gang 13A socket and USB smart plug that lost comms after 3 months.
most anyone will be able to get these setup working
I bought these to operate all my Christmas lights, and found them very helpful to do this, even my wife who hasn’t any tech knowledge, can use these very easy once I installed them. They where very easy to set up on our Google nest mini and our mobile phones, we now use them to operate other various items around our home. They are nice and thin in design, allowing you to insert a wall plug ,without standing too far out of the wall. And can operate at good amperage, which is ideal for most devices, giving you the option to use Google home on you phone or alexa from Amazon to turn anything on in a morning and at night to just say goodnight and everything turns off. No going around and switching items off individually. All I did was install Tapo on my phone from my app stall, and read how to setup, so easy to do.
So simple to set up - can’t understand the poor reviews!!
Very easy to set up both on app and google home.
I have edited this due to reading some reviews that are user error.
IT WILL NOT WORK WITH KASA APP!! These are made by the same company (like BMW make both the MINI and Rolls Royce) but they are very different.
If you want Geocaching (auto switch on/off as you leave/arrive home) then it won’t do it. If you want a simple plug to switch on stuff that’s hard to reach (lamps/printers/sewing machine etc) then for 10 it’s a bargain. I set up the first one in under 10 minutes via the app, then opened Google home which auto finds it and gives you voice control if you have it (google or Alexa). I bought two more for Xmas lights (which my 11 year old set up for me) and set timers on them via the app. So simple to use – I can only assume those who can’t get them to work are either A) expecting something from them they can’t do or B) have a faulty unit. They really are too simple a product to be anything else.
On the back of these I have also bought the Tapo bulbs which are also easy to set up in exactly the same way.
Small, simple, easy! (using with Google)
Picked these up as TP Link is a brand I know & they’re fairly well priced – I got 2 for 16 approx.
The overall experience was super smooth – download the app, plug them in, locate them, connect them, and name them. From there – in the app – you can do scheduling & timers, plus there’s an away mode. There’s also smart actions for various other tasks.
The units themselves have buttons on them, chances are you won’t use them, but the size is spot on. They’re very small for what they are so don’t take up a lot of room and don’t block the outlet’s switches.
We use ours with our Google smart home set-up, and has worked flawlessly throughout Christmas, and are currently in use with our new kitchen kick board lighting.
Simple, cheap and do the job
Bought a couple of these to replace some old clockwork timers that were now too noisy. Great price at about 16 for two so I ordered a couple more after the first set arrived.
I have no TP Link Kasa products so I’m not bothered by them existing in a separate product ecosystem and app.
Simple to set up but not without some issues. First pair set up fine through the Tapo app, linked with the Alexa app too despite throwing an error that said they hadn’t. Second pair added seamlessly at first but then lost the name and schedules I’d set and had to be removed and added again. Since then they are ok.
(* See below for update: this is now an out-of-date comment) Dropped a star as the Tapo app doesn’t seem to allow you to apply schedules to a group of products. I can do that with the Alexa app I think but would be nice if the Tapo app allowed it too.
Very early review but I’ll update if there are any issues.
Update: Increasing to 5 stars, the app now allows you to build automations that can control multiple devices. I’ve bought another 4 since my first purchase as I’m impressed with the price and functionality.
Neat and reliable
The setup looks daunting at first. However, the Tapo app is excellent and easy to use. After that the Echo dot picked it up with no trouble. I use it to time lights in my sitting room as the plugs are difficult to access, timing them to come on at sunset with a routine from the Alexa app. They are not as easy to set up as the amazon smartplug, but are neater, cheaper and just as reliable.
They work as they should, completely reliably, unlike cheap generic homeplugs I have used before.
These plugs are amazing value. I bought a non branded, cheap WiFi plug that purported to work with Google and Alexa but it wouldn’t work at all.
I already have one Tapo plug and so decided to stick with what I know.
The app is superb allowing you set timers etc. The plug is so easy to set up – within five minutes I had it up and running and connected to my Google Home app.
Unless you need energy monitoring, there seems no reason to but the more expensive TP-Link plugs (these Tapo plugs are made by TP-Link)
These do everything the TP-Link plugs do but in a better form factor and usefully cheaper.
Compact and Reliable
These are excellent smart plug/adaptors. More compact than most others on the market and when priced at 10 or less per adaptor they’re really great value. I bought four around six months ago and haven’t had any of the connectivity problems described in some of the lower star reviews. I’m currently using two of them for Christmas lights in the garden and despite the extra distance from the WiFi router they’re as reliable as ever. Easy to set-up app, don’t use voice commands so can’t comment on that. TP Link Tapo P100 is also singled out on Which.co.uk as having good WiFi security in comparison to other WiFi enabled smart plugs which apparently have security vulnerabilities, including the TP Link Kasa plugs the lower star reviews reference. Very happy with the timer and scheduling functions and very easy to use app. I’ve just bought another four as they’re similarly priced again. Would definitely recommend them.
Scheduling not working properly?
Correction to the below: It does support a schedule but there are two ways to do it and one of them gives the error mentioned. The trick is to select the Plug in the Tapo App and then click the calendar at the bottom. If you go via the “Smart” menu (which is more prominent) it gives an error.
——————————-
Despite the description it doesn’t support a schedule. Just says “supported firmware coming soon”. For that reason it gets 1 star. Probably going back for refund.
Perfect..... almost!
Bought a pack of two under special offer. Downloaded Tapo app to my phone, followed easy instructions and plugs were then visible and controllable via the app, and subsequently via Alexa….. GREAT! Then I discovered that although the plug are TPLink, the app can only control Tapo devices…. and TPLink Kasa devices are incompatible…. not so great.
But I was so impressed with their ease if setup and use, and the easy control via Alexa, I ordered two more. Again these work (almost) perfectly with the Tapo app and Alexa…. But the newer two are a different hardware and software versions and will not work with the Tapo app Smart Actions (it simply cannot see them) so, for example, I cannot use the “turn on lights at sunset” automation in the app. But, Alexa wins out and I simply created a routine in Alexa for sunset switch on, whereby all 4 plugs activate at sunset (for my Xmas lights).
Very happy with them now, just wish the Tapo colour change smart bulb was still available, and that I could buy Kasa products that would work from the Tapo app!
Connection is easy with the app
I like these, i have 4 now. Easy to connect with the simple app, connects and works with alexa perfectly,
Slight issue with the timer function, got it to turn on on time, but but couldnt get it to turn off at the right time. so set up an alexa routing to bypass it, now works fine. That might have just been me not understanding the instructions, just as easy to set timer through alexa. Overall i really like these, small light and easy to use. perfec
Perfect and so simple to use
I was a little wary buying these, as a new comer to Alexa and the whole idea of app controlled devices (and not been great with tech) I wasn’t 100% that I was making the right move.
Once these arrived I downloaded the app as suggested, plugged them in and in about 3 minutes had them set up, linked to my phone and set up with Alexa!!!
They are brilliant for those plugs you can’t get to very easily and as my partner and I have mobility issues it really makes life easier.
A great item and can’t recommend enough.
Brilliant!
Have set up 3 so far from a 4 pack and they were simple to set up using the Tapo app, I have a TP Link Deco router that runs a combined 2.4 & 5G bands and had no issue at all. I really like the fact you can set timers in the App for Sunset or Sunrise and then vary how much before or after you want to vary the action, I have hall lights and Festive lights coming on 30 mins b4 Sunset and then off at 11.45pm. I run Google home and again easy to link TP Tapo to it and it just recognises all the plugs in the Google home App, then you have voice control etc via Google hubs and speakers, have my old HiFi Amp controlled via Tapo for Spotify, endless possibilities for these plugs and great for security. Love the fact you can say “hey Google turn off all the lights in 10 mins” before you go to bed. Importantly the plugs are quite small and don’t obscure the socket switch. All in all highly recommended.
Great smart plugs for Alexa enabled devices
We picked up a pack of 4 for 29.99 (gone up to 49.99 since the purchase). These plugs aren’t overly large. There’s a faint LED light showing the status and press button power switch. These are compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant.
Set-up is simple. Download the Tapo app and register. Then use Alexa to add Tapo. Plug in the smart plugs. The LED will blink orange and green indicating set-up mode. The Tapo app picks them up, link and then check for firmware updates. You can rename it. Alexa picks up the changes quickly and you’re set to go.
Brilliantly simple ‘life simplifying’ tech.
Absolutely brilliant. We have a cabin in the garden and one of these little belters allows us to turn on the oil radiator whilst in bed and the cabin is lovely and toasty when we start work. We used to have a mechanical
timer but it needed constant fiddling around with the day before or in evening based on changing daily weather conditions. This thing is ace, turn it off while you’re waking the dog, or set it to come on thru the night for 20 mins to keep residual temp above freezing. Fully programmable and also love the countdown timer – set it to turn off after a few hours or at a set time every night saving cash as heaters not the most efficient if you accidentally leave them on all night. As most other reviewers, within a week I’ve ordered another 3 for elsewhere in the house.
Doesn't work with Samsung SmartThings.....
I was bought a TP-link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug for my birthday and had very little trouble installing and using it from my Samsung S20. I bought a second HS100 from Amazon along with an Echo Dot (4 gen) as I was quite impressed with the overall integration of both products that I had used already. Alexa entered our house mid-November and we have had some fun with her despite lockdown. As Christmas is coming, I thought I would buy another Smart Plug. I bought the cheaper Tapo P100, having been told that it was a newer version than the HS100. Installation did not go well until I realised I needed another App to link Alexa. Although it works reasonably well with Alexa, it does not integrate with SmartThings. You might ask “why does it need to work with SmartThings?” Well, I only have one Echo Dot and when out of earshot of Alexa I use my mobile. I could buy additional Echos or use Alexa on my S20 instead………….
I needed a smart plug to control my Christmas lights and as I’ve had TP-Link smart plugs in the past I opted for this model as it was at a good offer price.
It’s straight forward to set up, must use the Tapo App, which I already had, if not download it first. Follow the instructions on the App and switch the plug on. The App will set up the plug for you and connect it to your router, you may need your router name and password to enter on the App if you haven’t used the Tapo app before. Within a minute it’s set up and working.
There’s a timer and schedule to use on the app or you can use Alexa app to programme a schedule. Alexa automatically picked up the new plug once the set up process had completed.
Highly recommended.
Easy to use smart plug. Works great with Alexa.
I wanted to be able to turn my fan on and off without getting out of bed so I bought this plug to use with Alexa.
Super easy to install (just plug it in and follow the instructions to connect it to Alexa).
I had a few problems at first with it disconnecting from Alexa but I moved it to a different outlet and then it was absolutely fine and hasn’t disconnected since (it was in the same outlet as Alexa, not sure if that was the problem but moving it to another four gang sorted it).
I haven’t tried the timer function as of yet.
Really easy security device!
Really pleased with this timer – so much less fuss to set up the lights to come on when you are out than the old fashioned timer plugs!
Easy to install the app on my phone and then control the lights when I am out. As I also have the camera at home, I can see that they are on and can switch off if I am away. Great that you can set the lights to go off at random times so it isn’t obvious that no one is really home.
Bargain for the price too – I think I will be buying more in the future!
Smart Home plug!
This TP-Link smart plug might be the right solution for you if you’re looking for a “smart” control of simple items like fans, simple coffe machines, lights etc.
It’s dead easy to install, basically plug it in, download the app, scan and you’re ready to go.
I was looking for a way to control my electric portable fan heater in order to have a scheduled on/off time. Unfortunately, if you’re machine is a digital one, it will only turn it on or off but only to standby mode.
I guess this do not depend on the smart plug per se but it is the appliance you connect.
The app is pretty straightforward, you can set a timer, schedule and everything is working smoothly.
Only few downsides, I don’t know if it is my house but the coverage is very small, if you move to another room it will lose the WiFi signal. Secondly, sometimes it isn’t recognised by Alexa.
Overall a good purchase.
Easy to set up and works well. But does not work with some BT hubs.
I wanted one lamp to come on at different times on different days as a security measure.
All I had to do was download the App to my phone, pair the phone to the Smart Plug via Bluetooth and then link it to my WiFi.
It was pretty quick to set up.
Then I was able to set the timer to go on and off at a different time and duration for each weekday.
There is also an on or off switxh on the App to override the timer if needed.
So simple and it works like a dream.
No more fiddling with those little pin type timers and if I need to change the settings I can do it via my phone.
Very pleased.
EDIT
BT upgraded my home hub and this smart plug “isnt compatible” – so it is now rendered useless and I have reverted to the good old pin type one.
So make sure this smart plug works with what kind of home hub you have otherwise you will waste your money.
Good plug, but the firmware update upset it.
I have two of the plugs and both work well and were pretty easy to set up. They can be controlled from the Tapo app, which allows extra automation to be set up such as timers. This also allows each plug to be assigned a name, for example the name of the appliance or the room it’s in. But It can be anything.
It also can be added via the Alexa app so that the plugs can be controlled via Alexa. A Tapo firmware update upset this function, whilst I could control everything via the Tapo app, Alexa just wouldn’t connect. I wiped the whole thing and set it up again, twice, and on the second attempt it all started working again, so I’m happy with them again.
I only have it working lamps, but the plugs are rated 13 amps so could potentially work any appliance.
Smartplug that is easy to install.
I purchased one Tapo plug whilst on offer. I didn’t want to pay too much for something I thought would be a nightmare to setup. Since then I have purchased more because they are so easy to install and very versatile. Great for lamps, chargers, kettles etc. Also ideal for places where it is hard to reach the socket. The timer and schedule functions are brilliant as is the compatibility with Alexa. Only had these for a short time but at the moment they are working well. So easy to setup and lots of uses. Love them. Would recommend and would purchase again.
Compact and Functional
Smaller than a few comparable smart plugs I have tried; and once you have paired them using TP-Link’s app-store app; seamlessly integrated with Alexa .
Some thoughts
* manual on-off toggle button is on the side; which is not ideal, but required for the plug compactness.
* beautifully small – probably not the smallest you can get, but compared to the Z-Wave and others that I have tried, they are diddy.
* Consistent/Reliable. I initially eschewed WiFi smart plugs, thinking that Z-Wave or Zigbee were the smarter/better solution – however, with decent WiFi around the house (shout out to TP-Link Deco range), the WiFi plugs – like the Tapos – have proved more reliable.
Great product with easy setup
I have a number of these devices in my home and office and they have been (mostly) excellent.
Setup is extremely easy and once done control is via the Tapo app or by voice using Alexa.
I had one device fail, and sadly discovered that Tapo customer support is utterly hopeless… luckily Amazon support is excellent and provided immediate exchange.
Overall I would recommend these for remote control of electrical appliances, but always buy through Amazon because if you do need any after-sales support it won’t come from Tapo!.
Unable to integrate ALEXA
I initially bought oe of these units to install in my elderly mothers in order to ensure that she had ample lighting .The process works well and I can control the units from my mobile. I then bought one for myself and it was easy to integrate onto the app. However the instructions in the box do not tell you how tolog into Alexa. to use. I also purchased a smart plug by Amazon as it was on special offer. Claims to work with ALEXA. Plugged in No problems and for the difference at the time the better product! This is a BONA FIDE review I have not been paid nor bribed byoffer of a good review nor am I paid. I write what I find. DH Burns (Scotland)
Absolutely amazing!
First time trying smart plugs and I absolutely love this! I have a lot of plants and grow lights in my house and it’s been a pain having to turn everything on every morning and off the evening – plus it’s an issue if I ever go away. Now I can programme everything to come on and off at certain times or just switch things on and off from my phone! For me it’s massively simplified my life. Definitely recommended.
A breath of fresh air. So as mentioned in previous reviews we were heavily invested in LightWaveRF nearly 2k heavily. We wanted to control some bits and bobs and did not want to pay another 100 for a double socket that maybe will turn something on and off. So I checked out these TPLINK ones, I bought one initially when it was on offer at amazon. Wow, life changing, tell Alexa, and boom, item is on, tell her to switch it off, boom, it’s off. Lightening quick. Lightwave we would tell Alexa, maybe after ten seconds something would go on, it might not be the item you wanted or it might just not do anything.
We bought some more plugs, another 4, each one the same speedy accurate everytime. The set up process I found easy, install the app, plug in the plug, click the button, name the device and firmware update, done within 2 minutes. I just ordered another 8 units and fully expect to order a bunch more.
The Lightwave system is now in the skip where it belongs!
Does not work with Alexa Pt II
Works fine with the TAPO app but will not respond with Alexa, it is seen in the Alexa app but unresponsive, the message says “There was a problem”
After a week or so, spending a couple of hours on it most days, I knew that logically speaking it was a software problem. I searched online and found a TP link download. It allowed me to see the plug and it’s status in the Alexa App. I looked further and found another App, after downloading and installing it, a miracle!!!
Everything worked as it should!
Alexa voice commands, just as promised.
Compact, safe and easy to programme Smart plug device to operate appliances remotely
I’ve always liked the idea of lamps that come on automatically at the right time of day and switch themselves off again at the appropriate time. To date, I have achieved this using electronic time switches which in my experience require an advanced level of programming skills and need continually re-programming to reflect the changing seasons and daylight saving time changes. All has changed now. These brilliant smart plugs are easy to programme and synchronise with the home wi-fi so lamps (or any other plugged in device) can be scheduled to switch on and off at pre-determined times which can be based around sunset and sunrise. Set up and programming is simple and intuitive using the smartphone app which can be used to manually operate the device remotely. Because the plugs are controlled by the phone app, they know what time susnset and sunrise is so you can programme accordingly and once set, forget about them for ever. They’re small and compact, inexpensive and are a Which? magazine Best Buy scoring highly for safety and security. Excellent.
So…
I’m not what you’d call a total technophobe. I manage to get through life without too much hassle. Yes I often need help when it comes to PC stuff but such is life.
Last month, the wife got an Alexa for her birthday. We mostly use it for music but the other day she asks if I can add a smart plug onto my amazon order.
“What do we need one of them for?” I ask, confused.
“It turns on and off the light” she answers.
I order the thing and it comes today. She immediately goes about setting it up. She downloads the app and is all pleased at how convenient it all is.
“Alexa, turn the living room light on”. Light goes on, light goes off. I’m like homer simpson with a hospital bed but still not 100% sold on the device.
That is, my friends, until dinner time. She’s away to work tonight I’m flying solo.
Dinner goes ok, they get yellow label sausages, chips and veg and all is fairly ok until the smell hits me. Child 2’s face turns the prescribed shade of beetroot and then continues his dinner as if nothing happened.
I give it a few seconds and look, only to be met by the sight. A full nappy precariously close to breaching. I need to get him out chair, through to the living room and onto a changing mat without squidging the contents.
I enter the living room. But no! The ambient light has dropped too low, I have no hands free and suddenly the 8.99 is all worth it. “ALEXA, TURN ON THE LIVING ROOM LIGHT!” I proclaim and behold, there was light!
Moral of the story, its not a bad spend.
Great product!
I’m generally not that fond of so-called ‘smart’ products, because they’re generally expensive and relatively pointless. But I decided to get a pair of these for 16 (Prime Day Sale), so they are fairly inexpensive and thought I’d give it a go. I’m genuinely pleasantly impressed! They are surprisingly small, and Setup is smooth and easy, and feature rich. I use one of them for turning lights on at night and off in the morning as peace of mind to deter potential burglars. The other one is set to turn on the light by the bed at 6am to help me wake up, as it’s easy to oversleep with thick curtains blocking all the light in the morning. I’m sure there are many other uses. Now slightly regret I only got a pair!
Quick and simple pairing with Eero (but make sure it has latest firmware to do it))
I installed this with my new Eero system with no problem. For the first unit I switched off the 5GHz band temporarily and it paired with no issues. I left the 5GHz band on with the second unit but it still paired fine. So far they have been connected constantly for the last few days. I was worried they wouldn’t pair properly.
Edit: I did order another one of these and it didn’t connect at all. I assumed I just got an older version of the firmware so I connected it using my phone as WiFi and updated the firmware. I then reset it and reconnected to my normal WiFi and it was fine. Hopefully this will help someone.
Forget TP-LINK 'KASA' stick with these TP-LINK 'TAPO' smart sockets
Bought ‘KASA’ and nothing but problems trying to get them to work and even TP-LINK suport could not help. I ended up returning the ‘KASA’ sockets and purchased 1x the 3x more ‘TAPO’ smart sockets which installed easily and without any problems.
What can I say.. Well now I can say “Alexa turn on/off table lamp”, “Alexa turn on/off TV” etc and it works!
NB: The ‘KASA’ smart sockets just would not connecrt to my home network despite seeing it. The ‘TAPO’ smart sockets saw my network and connected straight away.
This is a rewritten review because I unfairly criticised this tapo device as I was convinced that there was a problem with it.
I have not being paid in any way to correct this review.
In my original review I said that I believed that the tapo was causing a problem with power delivery and in turn causing my brand new TV screen to flicker.
When I bypassed the tapo and plugged the TV directly into the wall power socket the TV was perfectly OK and no problems at all which led me to deduce, (mistakenly), that the tapo was at fault.
One day later the TV began to flicker again and gradually got worse. After i contacted the TV customer care it was confirmed that the TV was at fault even though by then it was obvious due to the tapo not being connected.
The tapo was easy to connect to the Echo device and very easy to set up and I’m very happy with it.
It appears to be working perfectly and I’m happy to do the decent thing and correct my original comments, although at the time I believed them to be true. Sorry tapo.
Couldn't have been easie
After looking for a smart plug for a while, I wanted a well know brand with the safety I know I could rely on (not unregulated Chinese products). As I use TP Link’s Deco Mesh WiFi I chose these plugs.
I took these to the ultimate test…after seeing how easy they were to setup and integrate with Alexa, Google Home Hub and the app itself, I bought one for my father and got him to set it up himself. So super simple, followed all the instructions in the app, no errors, worked straight away.
I love the vacation mode you can set for lights to turn on/off sporadically between dusk and dawn. We now have a few in the house looking after lights and a heater in external office.
Highly recommended.
Had been using the sonoff plugs but wanted something that could handle a bigger load. These are perfect for turning on small 2kw fan heater. As the maximum load allowed on these is 2990kw.
I found the set up easy but you need to remember that these only connect to 2.4ghz band so if you have a dual band router it’s best to separate the 2.4 and 5ghz bands.
I’ve had no problem with them dropping out. And voice commands on alex are instant.
Over the years we seemed to have collected a (mixed)bunch of smart plugs which were a massive pain to setup initially, so when we changed out ISP and received a new modem trying to sync those plugs was impossible.
These plugs are easy to sync – eFamilyCloud etc were such a hassle to put in to setup mode and sync, Tapo are Bluetooth so easy.
Alexa integration was almost instant once you have the Tapo skill added – I opened the Alexa app and was about to start searching for the new plugs when Alexa announces that she’s found them.
Compared to the other cheap smart plugs these are much smaller, we have managed to free up some space in extension leads where the previous smart plugs were covering the inlets.
Since buying these I’ve bought a further 8 Tapo smart plugs because they’re that good.
When you consider that a “normal” digital timer costs the same as these and most don’t even work properly and are generally awkward to program these then these appear to be excellent value for money with the added wifi perk. They were a breeze to set up (unlike normal timers) and work perfectly well. I’m well chuffed with mine. I just wish it was more obvious from TP-Link what the different between their Tapo and Kasa brands are as they have similar devices.
Clever but clumsy setup
Fancied a smart plug for the household and as an avid fan of TP-Link I opted for the P100.
Dinky and clever but clumsy to set up. The paperwork didn’t mention anything about a 2.4Ghz-only setup and I daftly missed the app showing me it had to be 2.4. But once I was aware the plug still refused to connect. Why? Because I’d attached to a lamp and turned it on. Once it was ‘off’ I could connect. Daft.
Was tempted to buy a few but I won’t.
PS: Today I’ve bought some more but only because the price was right. Quirky to set up but useful to have in the household arsenal.
Super Fast, Reliable, small and Phillips-grade App Experience
I bought this to turn off my fan during the night since it’s such a waste of energy. I came here looking for a quick timer enabled plug and ended up replacing nearly all my plugs at home.
The app has so many features, it’s actually impressive how good it is, as a software Engineer that creates these for a living I can tell you right now this is a hidden jewel. I’m even able to create Tasks for when I get home (ie: turn on the lights or AC based on my location) and the cool Holiday option where it turns on random parts of the house to mimic human behaviour whilst you’re out of the country.
Great product, at an amazing price with an even better app experience with seamless Google Assistant integration (and alexa). I’m definitely buying more now and I advise you do the same 😀
I have this setup in my garage
I have this setup in the garage on a timer for a battery charger. I didnt expect it to work to be honest, as the garage is separate from the house, has no windows and a metal door.
Setup was pretty easy and although the signal right on the limit, barely 1 bar for the wifi, it works well and I can turn it on and off from the app without issue. The timers also work well it seems and the plug switches on and off when required. Works fine with alexa too although doesnt show up on Apple home.
For the price this is surprisingly good.
I use the app on my phone not tried it on Alexa
My need for this was just to turn the TV off
During lockdown I have found the kids coming down at stupid o’clock to watch TV or play on their playstation
I have the TV and Alexa plugged to the same extension so when the TV goes off at 10:30 it’s Off I can retire to my room to watch TV and I don’t have to worry about the Kids stoppinf up all hours . I have linked it to Alexa but I tend not to use alexa as I don’t want the kids putting the TV on when they should
I already owned an Amazon made smart plug designed specifically to work with the Echo/Alexa speaker series.
I wanted to buy another, but the stock situation seems extremely erratic.
I saw the reviews of this product, the Tapo P100 and decided to give it a go.
I wondered how well it would integrate given the fact it needs to be configured with a separate Tapo app and whether there would be any conflicts with the Amazon made plug.
I needn’t have worried. Configuration is very easy and it operates in exactly the same way, in terms of voice control, as the Amazon made original.
I have my bedroom light set up using the Amazon plug under the name of simply, “Light”.
I now have the main living room light connected to the Tapo smart plug under the name of, “Lounge Light”.
To turn on the light it’s a simple case of saying, “Alexa turn Lounge Light on”.
And of course he can be turned off as well.
Physically, is a compact, neat device and that together with the functionality makes it an easy recommendation.
Excellent and cheap smart swich from TP-LINK.
I have the standard Kasa smart plugs as well and was interested to see if this Tapo version performed as well. Both types are made by TP LINK, but both have their own seperate Apps, which seems strange. The Tapo P100 has the ability to respond to sunset and sunrise times which is what I wanted. The setup was quick and straightforward using the Tapo App, I then incorporated it into the Amazon Echo empire which was also no problem. I set up the device to turn on at sunset and turn of at 22:15 precisely. This saves me from constantly have to rest my old timer switch! So far so good, if the P100 continues to perform as required then I shall be well pleased, especially as it was around half the price of another Kasa device. 1st edit: now found out how to vary the Sunset-On time, it now switches on at Sunset + 5 minutes, but I have also retained the Off Time at 22:15. Excellent, very good. Recommended.
So I wanted to try a smartplug and this was on sale and I figured what the heck. Installation is super easy, if it doesn’t work for you, you’re doing something wrong. I like the fact that it’s small and so you can plug other things in next to it. Be careful as others already mentioned this tapo plug is not compatible with the kasa range (from tp link too) you neee to download different apps to work each range which is a bit silly. This is an entry level smart plug, I hear the more expensive ones can measure consumption and whatnot this one is fairly standard. It’s basically and advanced time switch with alexa integration. It’s still better then a timer which you have to manually set every time you want to change a routine. This one can create rules after each other so after some brain work you can have a different schedule for every day if you want. I noticed it lost connection a few times but to be honest it’s hard to say if it’s the plug’s fault as I use it in room where wifi coverage is patchy.
Exactly what I wanted!
I’ve used analogue timers in the past but thought I needed to get with the times when setting up my aquarium. This is exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded the Tapo app on android and followed the instructions whereby it connected to the internet. Now the LED
Iights are on a timer and if I want to change it at any point using my phone I can. I am going to buy more of these. There is one thing though, I havent managed to get it to work with our amazon alexa but it doesnt matter.
Works but no instructions to set up with Alexa
Bought lots of similar ones to these, the Amazon branded ones work with Alexa right out of the box, with this type you have to down load an App first and then a Skill on the Alexa app which is all fine if the skill is working and has been updated. Ones I bought recently the skill just wasnt working so they are now sat in my draw waiting for someone to up date either the App or the Alexa skill. So you pays your choice get the more expensive Amazon ones that work without complication or these they are cheap but you need to know what your doing to set them up.
This is working well now switching on and off my electric blanket.I had difficulty setting it up, it refused to connect to my Virginmedia router which is a dual band 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz .because the smart plug(not so smart) is 2.4 ghz bandwidth only, it could not differentiate between to two bandwidths. It was only when I logged on to the routers settings and disabled (temporally) the 5 ghz option, rebooted the router and then the smart plug found my router. Apparently this happens a lot with the Virginmedia super hub, maybe the manufacturer could address this problem. There is a great video on how to do this on You tube. Only 4 stars because of the installation problems, but it seems to be working fine for now.
Compact smart plug
This is a great compact smart plug. I installed the android app and added it to my network. I then paired it with Alexa having downloaded an additional skill. I have it hooked up to my coffee machine. I can turn it on from the comfort of my own bed when I wake up. This plug hasn’t missed a beat. As the need arises I’ll be buying a few more of these to further automate my house.
Cracking produc
Was biting at the bit to review this. Got one on half price promo two weeks ago and so impressed bought a second to control lights in garden
These are great as long as the wifi reaches them
Set up via Tapo app but to use Alexa you also have to set that up via Alexa app, timer function I’m having problems with but it could be me. If they can boost them at 4.99, then knock out a multipack of three for 15-20 instead of 10 each
Certainly getting more
update – i now have 11 of these around they house they are great and my freinds are getting them too
I bought one originally when they were on offer at 4.99, this was to use on a lamp which is plugged in to a difficult to reach wall socket. I was impressed at the ease of getting it up and running via the Tapo app and with its Echo integration. When the price fell below 10 i bought another 2 for the other lights in the room and i can now turn each light on independently or all of them as a group via our Echo which is rather neat to be honest.
The Tapo app also includes a timer and away function although i have not used either at the time of writing this review.
Works great but Alexa ignores i
This plug works great and turns my pond pump on and off and the Tapo app is good but Alexa just ignores it, Alexa sees the plug but just thinks it is always off line. The plug is in my garage along with a WiFi repeater, the plug has a full WiFi signal and works flawlessly via the Tapo app but Alexa just does not want to play with it, no matter how many times I link and unlink the skill from my Alexa account and re-set the plug up. So a great plug but let down by Alexa integration but with the Tapo app at least I don’t have to go to the garage to turn the pond on and off, just wish I could do it with voice control via Alexa.
Brilliant !
I really just wanted a simple system to turn the kettle on remotely, and this does the job perfectly. Easy to set up and use, and I’m so impressed I will be buying another in due course, for programming a light. Of course it does only turn on the power, but I’ve had no problems with it or the app, and the little manual button on the side is useful to turn the power off at night, before switching the kettle on, for use whenever needed – most often the following morning ! I can’t report on the timer function at this stage, as I don’t need it – yet.
This is my first smart plug, and I was looking for something simple to use which didn’t require voice integration (although could do so if required later).
I chose the Tapo because of the relatively small form factor, which enabled me to locate it on a socket where some of the larger plugs on the market wouldn’t have been suitable.
Setting up the smart plug via the Tapo app on my WiFi (BT Smart Hub) was extremely simple – the app is neat, and allows for setting of specific schedules or timers if required.
In operation the plug has been perfect so far. I can remotely disable/enable the plug as required, and I’ve had no problems at all with lack of connectivity for either the plug or the app.
All in all I’m extremely happy with my purchase.
After buying 1 of these I decided to buy 2 more. Installation was easy, just use your phone and the app walks you through every step.
I have set up times for when I want my lamps to turn off. I’m finding this great! It makes me realise its getting late and I should head to bed. I’m becoming less of an owl and I love the extra sleep.
I digress. The functionality with Google assistant is great. Of course you’re always going to have a faster response through the app than asking Google, but if you think about it, asking Google means I don’t have to unlock my phone, find the app, load the app, press the off button. Really, the voice assistant communication is great. The delay isn’t a delay.
After buying my first one, they bumped the price by 3, which was a bummer, but really they were the cheapest and most reliable on the market that I wasn’t bothered getting 2 more.
Simple to set-up
Purchased this and a ‘Smart Plug eLinkSmart Mini WiFi Outlet’ at the same time. This one just over a tenner, the other ‘non branded’ just under a tenner. The eLinkSmart is a smaller neater little one which was very easy to set-up and works well (reviewed separately). This one was equally trivial to set-up and, although i haven’t used it in anger yet, has passed all the basic testing I did. I haven’t tried the timer or other functions – just the remote on/off – and that worked perfectly.
Get sma
I use this for controlling lamps, both on a schedule timer but also wanted something more up to date and unlike an analog timer doesn’t need to be adjusted when the clocks change. Previously I had brought an amazon smart plug and it was seamlessly integrated with Alexa but this plug doesn’t you need to install the TP Tapo skill on Alexa which took me a couple of days to figure out but it also works well with the standalone Tapo app on my iPad but that doesn’t respond to voice commands. Overall it is good, works well and does what I need it to do.
I bought two of these. They are good value for money. The first installed very easily – I downloaded the app, signed-up (probably the least convenient part of the process) and then plugged the device in. Pressing the “+” button in the app found the device quickly and it was done. Really simple. The second device was more of an issue. It took three goes to make it appear. I don’t know why but I was getting ready to send it back when it decided to appear.
In use, they work well both inside my network and also remotely. I like the app, it is simple to use and has all the functionality I need. I can set times for the plugs to switch on and off, set random times (within certain hours of the day) for them to come on or off (“away mode”). I don’t have Alexa or Google Home devices so I can’t vouch for their functionality. All-in-all very good value.
Update: 25/02/2020. The lack of IFTTT support is a little annoying. If you need this capability you would be better buying from their Kasa range. I’m hoping that IFTTT support will come soon!
After Amazon stopped selling their Smart Plug (at least here in the UK) I had tried a few other brands. None of them worked with my BT Smart Hub unless I separated out the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-fi networks which I wasn’t prepared to do.
This is the first smart plug I’ve tried that worked without me having to change a thing on my BT Smart Hub.
It’s a great product and the Alexa integration was set up within minutes. I have it set as a light controller.
I bought a single plug to see if it lived up to the hype. It did. It is easy to install just download the app and it is easy to follow the setup. I had just one problem – scheduling is not sufficiently clear in either the instructions or the TP-Link video (I recommend viewing it before you buy). Scheduling Start and Stop are separate operations – Set Start then save, Set Stop then save. I have a 50″ TV and the power switch is difficult to access (need to move the TV). So the TV, Digital Recorder, Blu-Ray player were on standby 24/7 even though I watch TV only in the evenings. Scheduling 18:25 Start to 23:05 Stop means I save 18 hours standby electricity. Am I green?
There are two reasons why these are so brilliant:
1) Size. They are small – smaller than the Kasa ones, about the size of one of those old multi-plug things that you used to get in the 1970s where you could plug three plugs into one socket. This means you can get more than one in a double wall socket or extension lead.
2) SunriseSunset. This is really great. We have a light in the hall that we want to come on when it gets dark. Before getting these we had to manually adjust the timer every few weeks to take account of the sunriseset times. This thing allows you to program it to come on a number of minuteshours before or after sunrise or set.
And lots of reasons why they are so good:
1) The TAPO app is clean and easy to use
2) It’s a doddle to set up. Bluetooth is used only for setup – which might seem like overkill – but it does make the setting up of them a doddle
3) It’s so much easier to set up timers on a phone app than on a dedicated timer plug
4) You can switch them on from anywhere in the world – well, anywhere where you get a mobile phone signal. And you can tell if they’re on or off from anywhere too.
5) “OK Google, switch on the hall plug”. Again, easy to set up in Google Home.
6) The instruction sheet says that you can plug an iron in with them. So, if you’ve ever wanted to switch your iron on whilst you’re on a night out you can! All that’s needed now is a remote ironing app. An iron! Why do they suggest an iron?
And the two (valid) reasons you might not want one:
1) No geocaching. So you can’t get things to turn off when you (or your mobile phone) leaves the house.
2) No IFTTT. So you can’t get things to turn off when you lea… Or do other cool stuff. But IFTTT is for those who love to do cool stuff – this is a simple bit of consumer electronics.
Finally, they’re not Kasa compatible – which means I’ve got 178 apps on my phone instead of 177. First. World. Problems :-)?
Ordered two of these to plug Christmas tree lights and Optical Christmas tree into. Set up a group with Alexa and can turn both on with just one command. Good value and work as expected however, I have 2 other tp-link plugs that use the Kasa app, these do not work with that and you need to use a different app called Tapo and you also need to add that skill to Alexa and link the account. Would have been 5 stars if all could have been managed from one app.
