    Great smart switch
I was initially a bit miffed at having to purchase this smart plug for the sole purpose of improving signal to my “Wiser” smart heating system but I have to confess, it’s actually been a really good. It feels very well made, took second to configure, I’ve had no problems with my smart TRV’s going offline since installing it (it acts as a mesh signal extender), it works flawlessly with IFTTT, can be easily scheduled and shows me live power usage so actually, not a bad price for all that.

    Very Good Thermostats
Ive had these for a few months now. They have been a godsend. As energy prices are now rising at ever increasing costs. I can now control all the rads in my house all from my phone or tablet. I ended up buying nine of these and the Drayton Wiser hub. They have been amazing, the app gives you great control and gives you a visual guide and heat report so you can see your energy consumption. As we are over a certain age it saves going upstairs to change the old valve settings manually. Highly recommended.

Extend Range of Wiser Heating System
This was bought to extend the range of a Wiser heating control system in a large house. As a smart plug its does pretty much what other smart plugs do like turning a 3 pin plug device into a smart device by allowing you to turn the device on or off from a phone/alexa/google or setting up schedules to turn it on and off automatically. If you are just looking for a smart plug then this is an expensive plug as you can probably get 2 smart plugs at this price and they probably have a little more features like turning on at sunset, etc… (which this plug doesn’t).

If you have Wiser Thermostats and TRVs and you find some of them loose connection, this is the product for you as it will effectively repeat the wireless signal to the TRVs and Thermostats. It’s simple to integrate into the Wiser system and permits remote switch on/off and flexible scheduling of any electrical device.

Feels well made and rated a full 13 amps. Quality and worthwhile addition to a Wiser system if you have the need to extend the range.

    Great system
Easy to install, easy to use, works great with Google. Only small criticism I have is it sometimes looses wi-fi signal but quickly regains it so it doesn’t bother me that much. It really is that good for the money I’ve bought a second system for my aunt for Christmas and plan to get one for my parents

    Simple setup and works well
I have had a basic switching unit that Google can turn on/off via Smarter Things and Home app. It didn’t have a thermostat so heating is either on or off.
So I took a punt on this after having lots of problems matching Hive units.
It took 5 minutes to install. I added the short link wire as it doesn’t have an internal link.
Now some people have had problems with connecting to their home wifi router. However mine saw both my router and the extender I have downstairs. I’ve a large 4 bed house.
You can’t blame this unit if your house WiFi signal is weak, just get a cheap extender.
The Wiser app loaded easily and has good responsive controls. The thermostat is neat and small but easy to read the data.

    Works well
Having read reviews of this and other systems I decided to change the programmer and thermostatic valves. The system was easy to fit and the valve tops fitted on 20 year old Danfoss and Drayton valves, I had to replace a couple of very old ones. The setting up was fairly straightforward with a couple of glitches but Wiser have a very helpful helpline – answered quickly by knowledgeable people. It’s now working very well and we can set the temperature in every room at every time. I’m expecting good savings in gas usage, which is welcome with rising prices.

    Ideal replacement for standard timers
This product is easy to install and easy to use with the phone. It saves messing around with timer plugs which are always a pain to change. I use it to control the electric oil heater in the conservatory and another one for the towel rail in the bathroom. However, in the summer I will it to control the valve for the garden watering system whilst I am on holiday. Not dirt cheap, but well worth the money. I should get that back with the amount of money I save on electricity.

    Absolute game changer!
I had a new heating system installed this year which came with a Honeywell TR3 programmable wireless stat.
    No smart connectivity or app.

I did a bit of research and went for the Drayton because of the cost and reviews.

    I’m absolutely delighted.

I bought the starter kit which had a thermostat, control box and 2 wireless TRVs.

After an hour of thorough googling I decided to wire the control box myself, which was easy enough after going through a few forums.

The set-up was a doddle, as was adding the TRVs.
I ordered another 5 TRVs on the spot.

All my rooms are now wirelessly connected to both the app and Alexa.
So I can set room temperatures by voice.

The app itself is easy to use and links to IFTTT, so it’s geofenced and switches off when I leave the house, and back on when I get home.

Handily the app can aggregate temperatures, so where I have 2 radiators in one room it uses an average temperature.

The bathroom radiator is the only one that doesn’t have a TRV on it so I put the thermostat in the bathroom.

Basically I can individually heat any room in the house as long as I leave the bathroom radiator on.

At this price I couldn’t be happier!

    Highly recommended.

Great TRVs for a smart home
After doing lots of research about the best setup following a new boiler installation we went for the Drayton Wiser option. We have now added smart TRVs to all downstairs radiators. Really easy to change from old TRVs – watched the Drayton installation video on you tube which was really helpful. The TRVs have to be nice and tight on the valve head and once fitted they are easy to calibrate. We are now able to run radiators individuals or if we need to boost the heat in a particular room at the touch of a button. The app is easy to setup and use. I was slightly concerned about the range but we have a 3 storey house and they managed to get a signal in every room including the loft room! Early days with them but really impressed so far. Now going to purchase more for upstairs!

    Excelle
Excellent product. Easy to set up and use. Only 2 minor issues mentioned below other than that delighted with it.

One issue is the wiring diagram didn’t match my 3 zone oil boiler system.
Another issue was you have to select the channel each room stat works with in the app but there didn’t seem to be any mention of this anywhere. So both room stats were turning on the upstairs heating until I figured it out.

    Simple and attractive multi-zone heating
We recently replaced our boiler and decided to fit to fit Drayton Wiser at the same time. The plumber installed the hub and fitted the needed valves to the radiators, but left us to do the actual configuration and fit the actual TRV heads.

After reading some of the reviews on here I was a little concerned that given the size of our house we’d have issues getting the TRVs to pair. Thankfully the setup was very easy! Walking through the setup steps in the app I didn’t encounter any issues getting the hub to join the Wifi, and the TRV heads found the hub without issues. I did find that when joining to Alexa from an iPhone I had to turn off the popup blocker in Safari temporarily, but that was easy enough to sort.

Some people have complained that the TRV heads miss out on having an LCD display, but compared to the boxy looking Honeywell/Bosch TRVs I think they look a lot cleaner/more attractive for not having them (and that played a part in choosing this system). The twist to boost temperature up/down works well, and anything else can be done in the app.

Future wise, Drayton don’t advertise support for underfloor heating but it appears to be coming – the first time after I power cycled the hub the app sported an option to connect to an underfloor heating controller. It’s available elsewhere in Europe, so I think it might become available in the UK too.

I’ll keep an eye out on the reliability of the system, but so far so good.

Hidden gem of smart heating control
The Drayton Wiser hub (1 channel modle), room thermostat and smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s). Installed the hub in less than 5 minutes, swapping out an older Drayton 7 day programmer (controlling a combi boiler), which had the industry standard backplate. The TRV’s were a straight swap of old M30 size units. Some people have complained about the lack of temperature display on the TRV’s, I can’t say I’ve found it an issue. Just go to your phone app and view the temperature there!

I live in an old victorian tenement with thick brick internal walls and was a little worried about range, but I’m glad to report I’ve had no problems. The furthest TRV is about 12m from the hub and works flawlessly. My router is also about the same distance and the hub has connected to WiFi with no issues. The Wiser app is a doddle to use, very clear with all my rooms clearly visible.

App programing times and room temperatures are easy, you can copy and paste. It has geo fencing and you can set it up to turn off your heating when you leave and come back on when you return. The bonus is there’s no subscription or fees!

I can’t fault the Drayton Wiser smart control set up and ease of use, I’m surprised it’s not as well known as the others.

(Excellent functionality and Easy to Use (but avoid the radiator thermostat)
Having just replaced our 20 yr old conventional boiler with a much more efficient one I decided to invest some of the projected savings in further enhancements.
Replacing an old freezer and rescheduling the hot water is already making substantial savings on electricity and Smart Heating is an obvious next step.
First I reviewed the available products and decided that Wiser was the best value for money and offers all the functionality that we need.
I considered iTRV’s but eventually decided that the additional cost was not worth the investment but the option is still available in the future (though our Giacomino TRV’s also require a special adapter).
The big worry was installation and a bit of research showed that our BG UP25 controller has exactly the same wiring as the Wiser Smart Hub so I went for it. It took only a few minutes to shut off the power, unscrew the old controller and replace it with the new one. The existing thermostat is now turned to 100% on and will be removed in due course when the boiler is serviced.

Connecting my iPad and programming the hot water and heating was very straight forward and there are some youtube videos available to explain the different modes (away mode, eco and comfort) which offer savings on top of setting the old style TRV’s in every room.

The system has now been commissioned and is working as expected.

I am thinking that I will use Away mode in the Summer so that the heating does not come on and for the Winter I have a schedule with 15C at night and 20C during the daytime.

A bit of research and I found the IFTTT site which links to the Wiser account and allows you to create a free account and automate the system even further eg) an applet that runs at a certain time each day to switch to Away mode in Spring and Autumn so I don’t need to keep altering the heating schedule.

I would certainly recommend checking out this system if your requirements are simple and you want good value for money.

    Update:
so it’s been in place for 7 days and I have been closely monitoring the system and the power use.
As regards hot water, I have put extra lagging on the cylinder (12) and I am only heating water on ‘bath nights’ (x3 a week) giving a clear reduction in electricity usage. It actually seems sensible to heat to 65C so that the water is still usable even after three days.
Central Heating – I am not sure that Comfort mode is working with my new condenser boiler set on Economy so I have turned it off and forward scheduled my settings to get the full impact of heating when I get up in the morning. I have also scheduled a boost on ‘bath nights’ so that it doesn’t feel chilly getting out of the bath.
Overall the system is working exactly as I want and giving me control and feedback my major power usage. I already have some understanding of the time it takes the house to cool down and heat up.
It will be interesting to review this when it gets to freezing and sub zero temps later in the winter.

    Wiser smart Radiator Thermostat
    ==========================
Still very happy with the basic system so I tried adding a smart radiator thermostat.
My existing TRVs are Giacomini so I ordered the adapter which is available online from Conrad electronics or Amazon.
Fitting the adapter was ok but does requires a very small Allen key to tighten the nuts.
My experience is that the temperatures recorded by the smart radiator thermostat go wacky at the start of the day about 15 mins before the schedule kicks in and the heating fires up. (Photos attached).
I tried re calibrating and factory reset but the problem persisted and I’m still waiting for a response from the support team so I am looking to return this in the next few days.
Instead I am getting another smart thermometer which I will use as a sensor to record room temperatures and adjust the manual controls and existing TRVs. I could probably acheive the same with a simple digital thermostat but for a little extra cost the wiser smart thermostat will record the temperatures.

    Update: 20/11/20.
    ===============
Overall I still have a very favorable opinion re: the Drayton Wiser Smart Heating system – as it is easy to install, performs well and allows me to control energy consumption in these difficult times.
The Smart Radiator Thermostat did not work for me at all and I returned the product which may have been faulty. As stated above, my strategy now is to have two Smart Room Thermostats and this is working very well. In truth I might have done the same by getting a cheaper analog max/min thermostat but it’s nice to have the data recorded and two rooms allows you to exceed the 8 event s a day limit on a schedule.

    Excellent system
I’ve had two control systems from the boiler manufacturer, neither were cheap and both failed within two years. Won’t mention the manufacturer but they are one of the higher end domestic boiler manufacturer. The boiler is a combi but the wiser system would easily integrate with a heat only boiler system ( one with a hot water cylinder).
The system was very easy to install, the thermostatic radiator units simply unscrew and the wiser radiator unit screws straight on. I was replacing my old honeywell Thermostatic radiator controls. The kit comes with and adaptor which will allow the unit to fit most makes of radiator TRV’s without the need to drain the system. I found the unit very easy to set up and pair the TRV to the system. The only criticism is the system isn’t opentherm compatible so its simply a on/off but the way the system performs is very much like a opentherm system.
With standard thermostatic radiator valves these simply shut the water off to the radiator, this doesn’t interface with the boiler, only a room thermostat and time lock can turn the boiler on and off. With this system it is possible to turn the boiler on and off when any of the TRVs are calling for heat which is fantastic. For instance if your working from home and only want to heat say the living room and kitchen this system will allow these rooms to be controlled simply and efficiently without trying to heat the whole house, as long as each radiator has a wiser unit fitted. Instead of heating the whole house you can now control each room however and whenever you wish.
We have noticed a drop in the gas bill which is really why this system was fitted an long with reducing the CO2 footprint.
The house is small but WiFi is always an issue, ro the point the computer upstairs has trouble with WiFi so its hard wired, to date I’ve not had any issues with connectivity at all, this isn’t to say if you have a larger property or a poorly placed router a range extender maybe needed.
We have had this system. I have had to change the batteries in one or two units in that time, to be fair these are the ones that come with the unit so I don’t expect them to be the best, changing the batteries and reconnecting the TRV back to the system only takes a few minutes and probably will take less time now I know the procedure to rediscover the TRV.
Lots of data can be accessed in the app, so the tech minded gadget lover can see what the system has been upto.
Initial cost is a bit high but compared to the benefits this system provides is comparable to fitting a control system to a existing system, without the need to run cables to time clocks, room thermostats etc.
All in all I can’t recommend this system highly enough.

A tad pricey but working ok
Purchased this item really to use as a range extender for the wifi. I used it to replace an existing standard plug-in timer which was okay but being in an area that is susceptible to power cuts I had to keep resetting the timer, with this unit it never loses time not as bulky as my original timer so its another plus point. I am really pleased with its functionality and the control in conjunction with the Wiser App. The downside in my opinion was the cost. I hope some Wiser Geek could explain and justify the cost, probably down to the wifi, Alexa, and Google compatibility. I have also contacted Drayton and asked them on their next upgrade to show how good the signal is on the plugs through the app otherwise how do you know you have them in the best place.

    Simple and efficient, so fa
Been using the Wiser for just under 6 months now – it’s been a cheap(ish), reliable thermostat so far.

Bought as I wanted an opentherm controller for my boiler. This was a fairly cheap option and given the manufacturers provide no indications of how they regulate in opentherm mode, I wanted to try it out without spending too much. The option to add individual radiator control in future was a plus for the Wiser too.

Plumber had it installed in no time, only issue was a missing bus connector from my boiler (ATAG) which meant it had to be wired in normally rather than via opentherm to start with. When the wiring was switched the Wiser automatically detected the change and started operating in opentherm mode. Since then performance has been good, perhaps a modest reduction in energy usage by using opentherm and the comfort and eco modes compared to similar usage previously.

The only issue has been the connection between the room thermostat and the wiring center which struggles if the stat is placed in the older part of our house. The boiler is in the extension and the signal struggles to pass through the external walls (~10m distance). Will have to try with a range extender in future but for now it’s fine with the stat in the extension.

Pretty nice alexa intergration and app itself
I was originally going for the cheap Chinese radiator set, which you get them for about half the price. But the backplate requires different wiring and I am not too certain.
I decided to go for drayton, as this was the same as my old British gas one. It was so easy to fit (only unscrew and screw, 1 min job). And then the app is very smart.
I use alexa to control on/off, heat my towel for 30 min after shower for example. turn on hot water before showering etc. its realllly nice!

Yes initial outlay is sizeable, especially adding more rad valves and boosters, but was worth it. App easy to use with a lots of features. Linked to Google home but the app is so good and quick to use we rarely need or want to use Google.

Already had kit 1 installed on combo boiler which worked as expected
When we had a new extension to house built decided I would put underfloor heating in but would need it to work separate from rest of house, so would need Drayton wiser kit 3 with two channels, one to open valve for house and other to run underfloor heating in new extension, once in system worked a treat
Would definitely recommend product as they work really well and can monitor on smart phone from anywhere

Worth the money, simple to install easy to use
Worked perfectly for me, there’s a little messing around to set up, just do your radiator thermostats one at a time, once connected the system has trouble differentiating between the two. Also, you must register an email account with the app, if you don’t you can’t connect to the smart controller, an have to go through the entire set up again.

However, once set up, it’s easy to use, works perfectly with the Alexa, you will have to learn on the fly about your temperature, 1-5 on the old knobs means nothing to Alexa.

Also bare in mind, the thermostat on the radiator doesn’t give an accurate representation of the temperature for your room,

For example 15*C is the temperature of the thermostat on the pipe at the radiator not the whole room, you’ll have to dial it in to your own needs.

    Smart and helpful
Easy installation, smart room TRV thermostats are a great addition to my earlier purchased Wiser heat hub, I now have smart TRVs all over my house, so far so good if purchased with the wiser smart plugs which are required to help extend the signal, otherwise these radiator smart TRVs will not be picked up and heat will not be triggered.

Good Zigbee "extender" for Wiser Heat system
We have a 10 radiator heating sytem with Wiser thermostats. They communicate back to Wiser hub with Zigbee technology. Three of the thermostats were on the cusp of signal range from the hub and were using their batteries much too quickly. This Smart Plug has bridged the gap really well. The Wiser tech support people are VERY responsive to emails and very helpful. They were able to connect to our hub remotely and confirm the original signal problems and when I tried the Smart Plug in different positions in the house they could check to see which radiator thermostats were connecting OK to it. Very happy customer.

Sorry I don’t use it with Alexa so can’t comment on that aspect.

Good upgrade for our manual Drayton timer system – easy to use and set up via the app. Backplate fitted our existing plate – setting the water and heating schedule via the app took me a little time to work out but easy now . My wife happy that she can overide the system from work making sure she is warm when she gets home. Have not set it up with Alexa as yet as using the wiser app is easy to use in the first instance

Seems very good after my disappointment with my previous Hive version!
I bought this on a whim really as I was about to put my old Honeywell, wired, programmable thermostat and Siemens time switch back into my system following the fiasco with the Hive I had for less than 6 months! Noticed this Kit 2 as a warehouse deal “like new” so decided to give it a try.

Very easy to install, with only 2 units – the combined boiler switch/hub/controller and the very small and neat wireless thermostat (the Hive had 3 units – the extra one required an Ethernet connection to your router).

One installation hiccup was although all three boiler controllers state they will fit straight onto your existing, industry standard, back-plate in fact the Hive would NOT fit (it has a couple of extra profiles on the side of the box) so I had to fit Hives own mounting (not very good quality terminals). When I came to fit the Wiser controller it would NOT fit onto the Hive back-plate – it would have fitted the Siemens original one though! So I ended up changing the back-plate on both installs – at least the Wiser version has better quality terminals.

A further problem arose when I was starting everything up on the phone app – it appeared the Hub was already registered to someone else – thanks Amazon! Strange as when I received the unit it seemed to be factory sealed, the batteries were shrink wrapped, protective film on screen ans even the clip in desk stand was included?

At this point I let go a few expletives as I knew that with the Hive system, once the hub is registered to an account, it absolutely cannot be re-assigned – you have to buy a new hub for about 70!

However I decided to ring Wiser support – not expecting much in view of my previous days call to Hive – nearly 2 hours long – 50% unintelligible audio, lots of resetting of my router, changing cables, standing on my head – all to no avail and when they said “advanced tech support would ring me within 72 hours” to sort it out I decided that was the taking the mickey – Screwfix refund beckoned!

My call to Wiser support was totally different – a very helpful, polite, friendly and knowledgeable lady, whom I could easily understand on a clear phone line, just needed to know where the kit had been purchased and the serial number of the hub. Within 5 minutes the previous user had been cancelled and the hub was now registered to me – excellent stuff, exactly how customer support SHOULD work!

    Pros:
Easy to fit / very neat small thermostat unit with the option of wall mount or desk mount / so far the app works well (the ONLY way to program a schedule) and has lots of options and information / attractive colour display / simple 3 touch button control to adjust room temperature or select boost feature / possible to control the system from the app if your internet connection goes down – just press the “setup” button once then connect your phone/tablet WiFi to the built in Wiserxxxxxxx access point.

    Cons:
No Hot Water display on the thermostat (HW boost or over-ride ONLY available at the hub or on the app) / often the flame symbol stays illuminated for a long time after the room temperature is satisfied and the boiler has turned off (very slow update) / no proximity sensor to briefly turn the display on when you approach it

Overall it seems a good workable system and if it proves reliable I might just shell out and fit the intelligent TRVs to all my radiators BUT, as I need 12 of these at a cost of around 480 I will have to be very sure of the reliability first – It would be nice to be able to schedule and temperature control various different rooms at varying times – almost like “zoning” without the extra plumbing and valves etc!

Just a last word on my previous Hive – when the hub failed it also managed to corrupt the time setting in the thermostat and although they say “you can still run the schedule without internet”, you probably could EXCEPT there is NO time setting function available in the menu so yes, it would run the schedule BUT about 8 hours out of sync with the actual time – useless!

    Brilliant!!
I bought this as my baby needed to have hIs room at a constant 20 degrees (according to midwife), but meant heating was constantly on all year round all throughout the house. No need. Got this installed by a local plumber. All radiators in the house now have the Drayton Wiser TRV’s on and it’s very easy to use and control using the app. Not really sure what the benefit of the room thermostat is, but I would highly recommend. We have set all sorts of schedules for all of the different rooms of the house, never need to be too hot or too cold, and it never has to affect any other room in the house!

Work well but radiator valves quite noisy
Relatively easy to fit – some rewiring needed for controller though which needs care. Set up is really straightforward. Work well. My one reservation is the radiator valves are quite noisy when they open / close so not best suited to bedrooms if you want the heating to come on before you wake up.

Smart in all the right places.
I will admit I’m not using many of the smart features, but so far this has exceeded expectations.
It came as an Amazon return, which meant I soon had an opportunity to interact with customer services. Despite it being Christmas Eve afternoon the phone was promptly answered and the device reset within 10 minutes with the help of a friendly and knowledgeable gent. Another 10 minutes saw the whole thing up and running. The install itself was a simple matter of following the instructions.
I love the fact it has an Opentherm module even though I cannot use it in my system as it is split into upstairs and downstairs zones. They didn’t cheap out. Both stats paired without issue and have stayed connected ever since. Numerous system changes (heating and wifi) and power outages have failed to upset it.
So far everything works exactly as intended. I am also impressed that it does indeed seem to be quite smart. It measures humidity, which is required for accurate heating. Most impressive has been the way it now chooses to boost the heating early in the evening, while it has less work to do, and then just let the temperature drift down to the set level by the time it is scheduled to set back for the night. The ability to keep track of weather and heating patterns from since it was installed is also great. As I’m just zoned for downstairs underfloor heating and upstairs radiators I haven’t had any of the range or battery problems others have reported when using radiator smart valves.
Overall: Excellent performance so far and the only Smart Device that has proved less trouble than its non-smart equivalent. I’d happily buy another.

    Great basic smart heating controlle
We have a house with solid walls. Some rooms are warm and stay warm, others go cold really quickly.
We had a Worcester 34cdi with old drayton RF controller built in, and at night the bedrooms used to drop way below the setpoint of the wall thermostat – not great for kids bedrooms – especially when mold started for form in the colder rooms, so had been looking at Smart control systems. (Insulation is a few k so trying this option first)

This kit came on a treasure truck offer few months ago so bought it, plus 3 additional radiator valves.
Had to arrange an electrician to install the wall plate and the hub to the boiler… 60ish and less than an hours work.
The rest is done via the app on your phone.

    Positives:
-Responsive accurate control of the system
-Able to have a temperature zone everywhere you have a sensor
-You can create a schedule of times/temperatures and assign multiple rooms to that schedule, or you can have a schedule per room (as we do as our use of each room fluctuates).
    – Radiator valves (TRVs) *very* easy to install and setup (just observe the battery polarity markings!… as the typical “springs” arent the same as other appliances… I spent 30 mins trying to figure out why none of my valves was powering on…to see that the batteries were in wrong!). TRV up/down can trigger a 2c boost for 1hr for that zone.
    – If you have a TRV and wall control in a single zone then the wall control automatically overrides the heating-demand on the TRV itself.
    – TRVs are simple in that there is no pull out display like the honeywells. Just boost up/down twists to change current setpoint.
    – Not too loud… slight whir for split second when temps adjusting… eg if too cold you hear the valve open, then the heating comes on. If the boiler is on and they dont want heat… then they whir shut.
    – Make sure your valve-body pins are free… get pair of pliers and shift up down a few times with a little wd40 so the motors dont have quite as much work to do.
    – We have solid walls, but didnt need the range extender. Furthermost valve needed to be connected to hub a bit closer, but always responds to control now connected.
    – android app is intuitive and easy to make changes in; there are now also battery status bars for each device and alerts when getting low. Plenty of insights of how your house behaves thermally, compared with say the outside temperature and what rooms heat when. (Mine is saying to install a TRV in our lounge as we are overheating it constantly as its an “always on” radiator – which had suspected).
    – comfort mode works out over time what your room takes to heat vs outside weather and turns on the heating before scheduled time so it reaches the set point when youve told it to. Works pretty well IMO.
    – there is a “eco” mode but not tried it out. Apparently its turned our heating down quite a few times when not needed… time will tell if reduces bills, but we bought it more for comfort so that we didnt have to wake up in middle of night to turn heating up for the kids.
    – hub range pretty decent. Our hub is in our outhouse round back of house and we still get 2/5 signal upstairs at front of house; the rad valves seem to maintain decent connection just the app sometimes struggles.
    – each of the smart TRVs can be “locked” so can only be changed via the app… useful if you have little hands that like to fiddle with things that whirr and flash

    Negatives:
    ipad app:
    – layout… doesnt landscape when you turn the screen
    – doesnt have the “settings” options… for that I have to use my android phone… so wouldnt have been able to setup using our ipad. Also doesn’t work with older ipads (we have a mini it wont install on, which might have been useful to just put on a wall in the hallway)

    Android app:
    1. latest update… if low signal to the hub it sits waiting to connect to the hub before you can change any settings… previously you could go in, review and only when you came to change something would it complain about hub connection… now… it just blocks everything. Loathe to buy the range extender given its 1 corner of the house that has the problem and we are moving our boiler soon.
    2. Initial setup – I couldnt create an account without the app being connected to my hub… so as such I couldnt do that side of things before my hub was actually installed

All access is via the “app”… that is you have to have a phone/tablet to control the system with any granularity; there is no way to login online and make changes, even though you can control the system via the app when away from home.

Only things missing IMO from the infrastructure are:
    – TRVs dont have a temp display on them (see honeywell).
    – a more advanced display control unit to upgrade to (see honeywell)
    – underfloor heating manifold (again…Honeywell) (we are planning this on our extension next year, so if not available will have to change systems, but for the price “right now” this is a no-brainer)
    – ability to login via a web-page and do all the same things the app can do

So far so good. Id **thoroughly** recommend and would buy again.

Update: replaced my lounge radiator lockshield with a wiser trv (for some reason this was our pass-thru, so moved them to the bathroom rad instead). Head registered then lights would randomly start flashing. +/- worked in opposite direction and then it disconnected and lights were flashing at random. Clearly a dud. Raised with Amazon who sent out next day replacement (which works perfectly) and now our lounge wont be epicly overheating whenever any other room demands heat.

If you have a smart meter you can also integrate with that, but my supplier (BG Evolve) doesnt do smart meters – not sure how it looks on the app.

I like the insights view shows you when heating was turned on or off during setpoint cycles. It shows external temp (from weather forecast) and internal temp in the room vs setpoint so you can see how outside temp influences internal temp and then when the system triggers. I guess it means you can look and see if its triggering when you arent using that room and adjust the schedule for that room – which I had done up front as our activity is fairly predictable

Persevere, Hopefully not 6 hours like me.
Where to start. Well swapping over the controllers was an absolute doddle, and the smart room thermostat did all the work itself. It all seemed so simple. And then the problem hit. Trying to connect the controller / hub to my WiFi. So many times it said it connected but then the app couldn’t find it, red lights flashing, green lights flashing. It nearly went back in the box and to the UPS returns point. However I swapped some emails with Drayton Support and they suggested I try a different phone to the Huawei P30 I had been using. I tried an old Samsung S7. This time during the connection the setup light went solid red so I contemplated an unopened bottle of whisky. As I contemplated for about 10 minutes, the light went solid green. The app still wouldn’t connect. I had set the guest wifi to 2.4GHz having previous experience of smart things. Eventually in despair with thoughts of a hefty hammer I changed the 2.4 GHz WiFi back to 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz auto. Closed the app, restarted. At first it still refused to register / find the hub. And then a miracle – it found the hub after a few tries. It all works now. Only 6 hours later.

So the secret to not spending 6 hours. Set your guest WiFi to 2.4 GHz. Run through the connection routine as far as the register page and remote control. At this stage you are directly connected to the hub on a temporary network. On your phone “forget” the passwords to your home WiFi networks or your phone may switch networks when it shouldn’t. At the end of setup, tell the hub the name and password of your guest WiFi. It should turn solid red. Make sure the hub setup light changes to solid green – can take 10 minutes. At that point, change your Guest WiFi back to 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz auto. Give it a few minutes to settle. Connect your phone to the guest WiFi. Complete the registration and click to remote connect. You may need to try a couple of times. If not return to the register screen, skip, logout, restart the app, try again. Perseverance seems to be required. Put your hammer and bottle of spirits away, relax with a nice cup of tea. You can now reconnect to your main WiFi and test whether the hub can be controlled from a different WiFi. Test with mobile WiFi too. Drayton support come back quickly if you need them but hopefully my experience will help you complete the process a lot quicker.

Once set up you can control both central heating and hot water remotely from your phone. On that basis I would give the product 5 stars but the setup instructions only 2 because whilst it is easy when you know what to do someone needs to tell you how when it doesn’t work first time. Switching WiFi networks around a couple of times – not in the manual, not intuitive unless you’ve gone through the pain before. Changing phones – never would have thought of that. Drayton support were good, 4 stars. So overall a 4 I think.

Great home thermostat - even better for those who want to integrate with Home Assista
The basic functions of this thermostat are good and most will be happy with them as they are out of the box. I was however looking for a system I could integrate into the home automation system Home Assistant. Many systems claim to be able to do this but they are via web links meaning that if your internet connection goes down you loose the link. Some systems I was shocked to find even require the internet for basic on/off schedules that you have programmed.
This system allows you to programme temperature and time profiles for each thermostat and then even if the internet goes down they work. Even better, someone has written an integration for Home Assistant that also doesn’t need internet connection.
So far been very pleased with how it works, and my wife is happy that she now has an easy way to boost the house temperature when she’s cold.

    Super!
I’ve had the wiser kit in my cupboard now for over 18 months and just never got round to installing it.
I have an oil fired boiler and an unvented system. When I turned the heating on, all my radiators came on and my water heated too. There was (and still is) no separation of hot water from the heating…both come on simultaneously. We have a massive hot water cylinder so no issues. We have 16 radiators in the house…so as you can imagine we were burning a lot of oil, to heat a lot of radiators and we weren’t in all the rooms they were heating.
Now that I’ve installed wiser that has changed. I have schedules set for all the rooms that have wiser trv’s. The heat comes and for a set time as and when we need and we can control the heating from our phones whilst away! There are a few rooms (ie the bathrooms and a couple of rooms upstairs) that don’t have wiser trv’s…but we want the bathroom radiators on due to tiled walls and floors being cold and the other upstairs rooms aren’t used frequently so we will just manually turn them on as needed. I’ll add wiser trv’s to these at a later date though.
We never had any wired thermostats to worry about either.
We’ve only had it installed now for about a month and it’s terrific.
Our house has solid block walls so we had to buy two extenders but that’s not a problem.
On one occasion (when we had just one extender) the signal dropped to all wiser trv’s so I rang customer support and the guy was very helpful and we got the issue sorted. Turns out my extender was too far from the hub and was in and out of signal so I just moved it closer to the hub and bought an additional extender. No issues since.
Cannot really fault the system at all.
One thing I would like added to the app (and the customer service agent I spoke to agreed with me) was if the app could tell you the signal quality each TRV is receiving…
It’s 9/10 for me on this!

    Check WiFi settings
It is the best kit on the market for home smart heating. Fairly easy to install but VERY important to change your home WiFi ssid settings, so that the hub AND the phone that you are using it with are both on the 2.4ghz channel.
Fairly easy to do with a quick bit of googling. Mine connected OK first time automatically, but second time, I was ready to smash it with a hammer.
As soon as I’d renamed the network AND connected phone to 2.4 channel, it was fine

    Excellent Heating System
Drayton WiFi TRV easily fitted to existing TRV mounts. Although the backplate to the Drayton hub is universal it didn’t fit directly to the backplate of my existing Honeywell controller (althoug hteh electrical connections were identical) -the Honeywell backplate to my controller stretches to the entire length of the controller). Pairing of the hubs was reasonably easy, but make sure you have the latest Wiser app. I did view the Wiser installation videos prior to installing the equipment, which were very helpful and informative. Linking to my broadband hub was easy but the Alexa link was not particularly intuitive -but i hadn’t used Alexa before so perhaps it was me rather than the link.
Once the system was insatalled it took me a little while to determine the best temperature settings, but it’s great being able to maintain a specific temperature to all rooms at their individual settings. Overall I’m very pleased with the system, which compares favourably with other similar systems.

    Simply fantastic
I got this as a Black Friday deal last year, and am incredibly impressed by how this has improved my central heating control. The house has 8 radiators – each of which now has a Drayton Wiser room thermostat (where I bought 6 more in addition to the two that come in this package) – with the room thermostat in the lounge.

I’ve noticed that the temperature in each room is a lot more stable than before – and the boiler fires up a lot less too – which should hopefully save me quite a lot on my gas bill! And the house has been lovely and warm during the recent cold snap, where the outside temperatures have averaged around -5C for a week or so.

Best of all, there is an integration available for Home Assistant – this is an open-source home automation system that I run on a Raspberry Pi 4. So I can control all my Wiser thermostats from within Home Assistant – as well as keeping track of signal strength and battery levels for each thermostat – and graphing the temperature in each room over time in Grafana.

So, to summarise, an excellent system, and fantastic value for money to boot!

    Great Controlle
This is a great controller and really does represent a major upgrade to an aging heating system. I used it to replace my existing Drayton controller and it was almost a direct plug in replacement. A cautionary note – the installation instructions require that any existing room thermostat is disconnected – regrettably, having complied with this instruction the heating system failed to function. The controller behaved exactly as it should but it would not fire up the boiler or cycle the motorised valve (over a 24 hour period). I tried various ways to correct this before reconnecting the original thermostat and setting it to maximum when everything functioned. I suspect this was an anomaly with the original wiring and no fault of the controller. I’m very happy with the product now.

    Review for Drayton Wiser Socke
For those of you using the Wiser Home Assistant Integration. These sockets provide a power measuring entity as well as extending the Wiser Zigbee network. I am running the Drayton system in parallel with a Zigbee2MQTT system and it all seems fine so far. Expensive until you compare them to other power measuring sockets.

Great solution - but limited unless you make further investment in radiator valves.
I bought this on a Black Friday whim when it was a crazily low price, and that’s a big reason for my score. It’s easy to forget once you’ve installed it, which is great in that it hasn’t caused us any problems – but, I question just how useful it really is compared with a modern wireless thermostat like the one it replaced unless you fully invest in smart radiator valves too.

If you have an existing standard control panel backplate, installation is incredibly simple – one of the key reasons to buy this over something like Nest which would’ve involved very complicated wiring changes, particularly in a multi zone house like mine.

The ability to ask Google Home to warm up a zone is great – though again I wonder whether this just encourages laziness when I could get off the sofa and press a button instead.

Super simple to activate away mode, even if you forget before you leave home, easily switching off the heating until you return and saving energy costs. Doing this via the app remotely is great (and easier than having to go into the boiler cupboard) but it lacks a calendar function to set when it should come back on (e.g. a few hours before returning home), which my old thermostat did have.

The mysterious eco mode is also apparently saving many hours of energy use according to the app, but I have absolutely no idea how it’s determining when / how to do this, so some simpler info in the app would be great. Time will tell whether this is really reducing energy costs.

The app itself isn’t the prettiest, and there are times it feels unintuitive – but it generally gets the job done. There’s a novelty element to it to start with, but after a few months I now tend to just use the thermostat controls, or Google Assistant.

But the key thing I’ve realised is that, dependant on property layout, the truly smart solution would be to warm up the house room by room – and in my case this would mean spending quadruple the price on radiator valves too. This is a cost I simply couldn’t justify based on convenience alone, and I doubt the energy savings would be significant enough to warrant the extra investment either.

In summary, a good purchase if you can find it at the right price, but be well aware of its limitations and whether it’s worth it compared with what you already have.

    One of my best purchases
I had a failing wireless Honeywell thermostat linked to a Honeywell receiver and then in turn connected to a Drayton Lifestyle programmer.
After researching replacement Honeywell controllers, Smart wireless thermostats etc. considering current ease of installation, future expandability, smart features etc. I was getting a bit concerned how messy this could get
I decided to go for the Drayton Wiser system …. inded the receiver did plug straigh into the old baseplate and I left the Honeywell receiver attached for now and simply joined the live / switched live wires in the terminal to buypass the wireless thermostat functionality from the old Honeywell thermostat.

Installation worked first time, the wireless control of heating and hot water is working properly. After installing the app on my phone I set up the initial schedules. Since then I have activated the eco mode linked to room temperature profiling, outside temperature and also activated the away mode feature through IFTT – all sounds complex but really is not.
I know that I can add smart radiator TRVs at a later stage for individual control of other rooms if I want because we have 3 floors in our house I might do this in guest rooms but not needed yet.

I now have a few weeks data in the Heating Insights, the eco mode and the auto away mode from IFTTT has saved a few % in heating times. At the same time the heating has auto adjusted and switch on earlier according to cold weather outside and we have experienced far more comfortable, consistent heating. I can also check temperature in the room, control hot water and heating via Google and Amazon … Hey xxxx turn on hot water 🙂

This system is easy to use, affordable, expandable and the remote smart learning to adjust heating schedules, temperatures truly is Smart

Can you tell that I am happy and this is one of the best purchases I have made in last few years ? Yep I am pleased

    Update after two years
After many months of research, I settled on Wiser because it seems more specifically designed for traditional British DCH and HW systems. I fitted the system in half a day, replacing the old wiring centre with a 16-way Drayton unit (recommended), and adding the controller in place of the four(!) time clocks and two wired thermostats that controlled the old system. I connected the controller to the wiring centre with a length of 5-core cable from Wickes, and added two extender plugs from Amazon and nine radiator valves from an Independent plumbers merchant. The install was straightforward, although the instructions could be clearer for DIY installers. Allow extra time to make sure you understand everything before you start removing the old system. All the items paired perfectly and provide exact control of every room individually, minute-by-minute, for each day of the week. A massive step forward from what we had before. Since installing I asked one question to Drayton’s tech support, which was answered quickly and helpfully. Highly recommended.

Tentative recommendation - while it's working it's grea
Bought the two sets of the multizone (heating+water) controls on the recommendation of my plumber, so two room thermostats and 4 TRVs, plus a spare Hub. Written after 4 months of use though winter:

    Pros:
    – Easy enough to install and add new components.
    – The Wifi range of the Hub is weak, but adequate in a thick-walled brick house as long as the hub is central, otherwise you’ll likely need some range extenders.
    – The app works well whilst on WiFi and still seems to be getting improved. The boost function is great, adding a couple of degrees heating to a room.
    – The app heating reports are very useful in seeing which parts of the house need more attention with regards to draughtproofing or insulation, or simply more heating
    – Hot water schedule has been great, and very easy to give it a quick boost if needed.
    – It occasionally fully opens and closes the TRVs around the house so they don’t get stuck through lack of use. The TRV motion is audible, but not overly loud.
    – The granular control over the heating times and zones has halved my gas bill, recouping the cost of the system in just 2-3 months.

    Cons:
    – Rooms occasionally heat up or cool down randomly, rather than following their set schedule. Drayton Wiser support offered no explanation so my solution to this was to add more identical time points throughout the day, so they check every couple of hours and hopefully reset themselves accordingly. Seems to work.
    – One of the TRVs has failed already, locked in the open position so an unused room was being heated towards 30 degrees – only noticed as the gas smart meter buzzed a budget alarm. Drayton Wiser support tells me this is not their problem, so doesn’t come under any sort of warranty. Thankfully Amazon exchanged it without question.
    – Connecting to the hub remotely whilst out and about is very slow. Support tells me this is my phones fault and the home wifi networks fault despite all the other smart devices in the home being absolutely fine remotely.
    – Support is patient with simple queries but do ignore any support tickets they don’t want to answer.
    – The Alexa integration is a bit hit and miss. Asking for current temperature or extra heat works perfectly, using a simple routine to turn the heat off in a single room inexplicably sets the whole house to boost mode.

    Suggestions:
    – Set up a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID for your heating. Should be possible in your router settings.
    – Let the hub update automatically to the latest firmware. There’s nowhere online that will tell you what that might be or what the changes are, and if it fails (due to network congestion or whatever) it gives up so it’s worth checking with support that it’s reached the latest version. They can also remotely restart the upgrade process if necessary.
    – The warranty with Drayton appears worthless as they won’t accept that parts might fail. Buy it from a retailer that has a decent returns policy.

Despite all that I do like the control aspect and it is saving a lot of money, but do wonder if I might have had a better overall experience with another manufacturer.

Very happy with this, but I’m not using it with the radiator valves, so that’s probably why. Replaced a basic programmable timer and Sunvic radio-based thermostat controller – and that change has been great. A thermostat that can now be anywhere in the house instead of needing to be close to the boiler, fine-grained temperature controls and a level of intelligence in ECO mode, multiple temperature settings per day (instead of one) and convenient app control have meant that we now have much more stable and comfortable temperatures in the house. I tend to use the app more to change the temperature than the thermostat unit, and the app graphs are a nice touch. Would recommend as a controller upgrade without the radiator valves. Problem free, haven’t needed any tech support.

I tend to use the app more to change the temperature than the thermostat unit, and the app graphs are a nice touch. Would recommend as a controller upgrade without the radiator valves. Problem free, haven’t needed any tech support.

Installation is great until something unexpected happens on the install/config
This is just first impressions in terms of a diy-er installing the smart hub, two roomstats and a couple of smart plugs.

The actual upgrade of the controller to a smart hub was very easy. The backplate had to be changed but the instructions were easy to follow as I had the wiring diag of the old controller. That probably took less than 30 minutes after which I could use my central heating and hot water via the boost buttons. Pairing of the roomstats was also fairly straighforward.

What was extremely difficult was connecting to the cloud. The app is buggy and idiosyncratic and I was getting repeated failures. There is nothing on line or via the app to help.

Tech support though were superb. I twice got through on the phone straight away – and on a Saturday.

Eventually they resolved the issue and it was extremely complex to diagnose.
    1) I have a 5g mesh network but the hub only works at 2.4g.
    2) It doesn’t like vpn so that had to be disabled.
    3) There were issues with randomly losing the wifi connection to the hub – it was resolved by putting in some smart plugs to boost the internal signal from the hub but there was no way of knowing in advance whether that would cure the problem as there was no indication of signal strength through the house

So bottom line on the hub install is, Tech Support was the saviour and I needed smart plugs.

TRVs, once installed seem fine – just a little too easy to upset the smart install process when physically installing the valves on the rad (just dont turn the top of the TRV by accident as you do it as it seemed to switch to another function.

Overall though I’ve got a pretty good smart heating system with no installation cost 🙂

    Wiser Multi-room
Not sure why this product is not so well know, compared to other makes on the market. After reading reviews on all of them, i decided Wiser was the one for me and I am glad I made that choice.
It was so easy to fit, I had a old Potterton EP programmer, so had to change the backplate, disconnected the old room thermostat, all done in less than one hour. Downloaded the app, followed the online instructions and was up and running in about 20 minutes. I then fitted 5 wiser radiator thermostats, that took about another half hour, all was up and running, altered a few settings on the app and sat back.
The system has been running for about a week now and everything is working fine, the system only heats up the rooms you require, I understand after a while, the system works out your heating habits and adjust its-self.
The app is so easy to use anyone could do it. Because i have full control over the system, I hope to start saving some money over the years.
Well done Drayton, first class product and made in the UK, cheaper than the rest.

Really impressive easy to set up great temperature control
After hours of research I had actually ordered Tado as they had apple HomeKit integration.
Luckily for me Tado sent half my items and then cancelled my order and mentioned Brexit.
Customer support was terrible I still don’t have refunds after two weeks. Never again!
    Here is my research conclusion.
Tado: poor support and now charge monthly for auto away mode.
Hive: have really poor radiator control reviews.
    Nest: don’t have radiator controls.
Then I discovered Drayton it has good has radiator controls that work and is cheaper.
So I ordered the conventional boiler kit and 4 radiator controls.
I needed accurate control in the lounge so I placed two radiator valves and the thermostat here.
I don’t believe in hallway thermostats, who sits in the hall.
I needed a week time schedule for the bedrooms we use as offices so placed two radiator controls there.
I left the remaining radiators on TRVs.
I removed my previous thermostat and controller which was wired to a backplate in the airing cupboard. Checked the wires were correct and clipped in the new hub to the backplate.
I had previously watched Drayton install videos which makes things clear.
It has two over ride buttons so you can test it ,turning the CH and HW on and off to confirm the wiring.
Next load the app and follow its instructions pretty simple.
The method is roughly like this.
1 connect to the hubs hot spot and put in on your WiFi code
2 add the controls one by one and put them in rooms
3 configure your schedule for each room.
The TRVs just replaced the tops of my old Honeywell TRVs. Just ensure they are tight enough.
It’s been running for two weeks now.
The lounge which is controlled via a thermostat and two radiator controls heats up quick and holds its temperature steady. We also have a stove so when that’s on the hub doesn’t call for heat as it’s warm enough-just the job.
The two offices upstairs are only used in the day in the week and one only part time. I was suspicious that the controls would give me an accurate temperature. The radiator controls do a really great job.
Warm up quickly and the temp is pretty good. I checked with another thermometer.
I now have room by room schedules which was impossible before.
The app is great nice and clear nothing to complain about.
    Alexa integration works well too.
    Well done Drayton.

Insights - the hidden genius behind Wise
After four nights of broken sleep recently, I decided to investigate the Insights Heat Reports.
I’ve looked at these before, and dismissed them as just fancy graphs to make the system look all techy… how wrong I was!
With four radiator stats, and the weather turning colder over Christmas, I realised the temperature in the livingroom was dropping below the 16 set point at around 4am every morning and causing the boiler to fire, raising the temperature in the bedroom and disturbing my sleep.
Set point reduced. Restful sleep resumed

    Easy to Install and operate
Ran into a few problems with the installation of the Hub. I have no experience of wiring and my original Controller did not have a back plate as shown in the Wiser instructions. But on phoning Drayton Wiser one of their experts sorted it for me while I was on the phone. Their support is quick in answering your call and really the best call centre I have ever encounted. The system was up and running in half an hour and I have since purchased and added Thermostats to all my radiators. The control the system gives you over your heating costs and the ease of control is great. No more getting up and altering Trv’s I now get more heat where is needed for less money.

Great smart radiator thermostat for Wiser System
Having already set up the Drayton Wiser Smart boiler control hub with just the thermometer I was interested to see how well the thermostats worked.

Initially I had issues in fitting to existing old TRVs which necessitated buying separate 3rd party adaptors. But after that it was literally a 2 min job per radiator to register and set up the valve. Very simple and easy with clear instructions and guidance through the mobile app.

I can also recommend these based on the excellent tech support service which Drayton provide that answered a phone query regarding the hub immediately without being placed in a long queue.

The system allows for each thermostat to be controlled with separate daily schedules which means that each room can be tailored to our needs, and avoid wasting energy. They are also quiet, and unobtrusive.

I haven’t had them long enough to review battery usage though

A better way to control your heating
It took me a while to get it working with help from the support team. The thermostatic valves had trouble with my old TRVs – the internal motor was plenty powerful enough to open and close the valve but not enough to actually operate it in normal use. It took a lot of fiddling to get some of them working. However it is worth the effort the house is comfortable but I am not heating rooms I don’t need so I guess it saves money. It is nice to be able to tell Alexa to control room heating if say the room is set to turn off but you decide to stay up to watch a film. Or tell Alexa to turn the bedroom radiator on if you decide to get up before the bedroom rad is set to come on.

    Simple install
Super easy installation, just be sure to read through the manual before you start.

I was replacing a Drayton timer and room stat with this system, plus I had Pegler TRVs which the Drayton Wiser ones drop right on to. I left the old room stat in place just at max temp as I didn’t want to mess with the boiler wiring plate.

I’ve added a smart plug and range extender to ensure the whole house is covered. Just need to order ten more TRVs now when the prices drop!

Only bug for me is it doesn’t yet work with Hubitat smart hub so automatic away mode is tricky for now (only through IFTTT).

Excellent product simple to setup and add to alexa
I found this an excellent product and simple to install. Just turn up the house thermostat to the highest setting or if you prefer add a wire to short circuit the thermostat all together and remove it. Replace the boiler programmer with the Wiser HubR which is just a matter of removing 2 screws and attaching it to the standard back plate. That’s installation complete unless you want to start replacing your radiator TRVs with the Wiser controlled ones. I decided against this as reading the bad reviews they all seemed to concern the Wiser TRVs losing WIFI connection to the HubR, or being too noisy and battery life not that good.

Setup was also simple enough. That basically involves connecting your Wiser product to the HubR and the HubR to your home network.

Basically I wanted the Wiser system for my mums house so she could easily control the hot water and heating using Alexa. The Alexa skill is OK but for the technically challenged may be a bit complicated involving setting temperatures etc. So for all you people moaning about the Alexa Skill all you have to do is create your own routine its simple enough. For example from the Alexa App I created a routine called ‘Heating On’ and This routine has three actions
1 House thermostat set temperature 27C
    2 Wait 30 minutes
3 House thermostat set temperature 5C
to activate this routine mum says ‘Alexa, Heating On’ and she gets heating for 30 mins without having to remember to turn it off.

Purchased a year ago everything running smooth to date but not without a small glitch or two. Thankfully support team fixed the problem and over all I’m very content with the system.

I installed the hub over a 3 channel system and never had to look at it again. Instructions are straight forward to install the hub.

Added the smart trv to the radiators that are least or never used. I had an issue with one trv and it was replaced by their return policy.

The app had numerous updates and works fine. Works flawlessly with google home using the command “raise the temperature” or “turn on the hot water”. Scheduling through the app is quick and responsive. Just be aware by default everytime hardware is added to the app it automatically adds a schedule which you need to delete or your system turns on.

The support team are fab too. Happy with my purchase alone just for the customer care.

Very convenient system and will recommend to friends

    Plug and play.
    Plug in, set up, done.

I assume that the reviewers who’ve had connection issues must live in mansions or have lead in their walls. The thermostat, which is all we’ve got connected at the minute, has had zero connection issues and it’s three rooms and several brick walls away from the hub.

Also, set up was a breeze, just plug it in, press the button and follow the instructions on the app.

It’s not rocket science. It’s not even ‘Operation’ level brain surgery.

    Just follow the instructions.

Will update when we’ve installed the TRVs.

Heating via Wi-Fi and internet using British built Drayton!
After 13 years we have a thermostat controlled oil heating system thanks to Drayton. Having previously owned houses that were built with thermostats wired in, I had forgotten how effective these can be. Leap-frogging over the lack of wiring has been accomplished using this smart Wi-Fi device setup. So, you need the controller on the wall that replaces whatever timer device you have been using. This links via your Wi-Fi router to your thermostat which sits in your room. The water pump can now continue to pump water that circulates but the boiler fire system only uses oil at the rate it needs to maintain the temperature you set using your thermostat. This temperature control can be modulated via the Wiser app on your iPhone or Android device or Amazon Alexa. More than one person can have the app on your phone controlling the boiler over the internet via your Wi-Fi router. If the internet fails, your heating will not because the Wiser system simply uses your router whether or not it is connected to the internet. Our internet failed across the country (Ireland) after I installed the device but our system heating kept going and was connecting perfectly throughout the 4 hour outage. I had read where another user had praised Drayton for this ability to directly connect to the controller. Of course you still have an override button on the wall controller. So, finally you will need a 2.4ghz router to make this work. If you have a modern 5ghz (5G) router you will need a bit of help in the form of a bolt on additional 2.4ghz router. This is simple to set up and will enable all Alexa devices to work such as smart sockets or bulbs. I highly recommend the ASUS router which sends out both 2.4 and 5ghz signals and allows VPN to be added as Smartvpn —Amazon sells this! Anyway we love our Drayton system- our boiler central heating is oil fired and single circuit. The heated water always travels around the water immersion heater and around the radiators. Dual circuit systems have separate control for water heating-simples!-enjoy!

    Fantastic product.
These are a fantastic addition to my house. I have 4floors so I used this system to zone my house off. It’s so nice to only heat individual areas. I would note that they start going a bit weird when low on battery and randomly come on so I would suggest hanging batteries when close to empty.

Overall, a good experience after initial setup problems.
The technical department were as helpful as they could be before I bought a system, but I was still a bit puzzled by the configuration in my house which didn’t seem typical. However…

I bought a system to control ten rooms, with the option to add two more. It wasn’t quite as trivial as they made out by replacing a controller on a standard backplate, as I had three controls, each in separate rooms. I solved this by placing the heat hub adjacent to the c/h wiring junction box and just connecting the outputs of the hub to the existing demand inputs to the three zone controllers and turning the outputs of the water and room thermostats permanently off (or removing the batteries).

There could be a better explanation that in a room with a wireless thermostat, that takes precedence over the wireless radiator thermostats in the same room but, other than that, it all seemed to go OK.

There were a few minor snags with the Insights aspect of the app on two Android phones, but the Apple devices reported data correctly and the Android bug was fixed within a few days of reporting it.

It’s great to be able to control the radiators and/or rooms individually, and it’s relatively simple to boost as and when you need it. Heating profiles are easy to set up with a good degree of flexibility – probably more than I (or most people) will need.

The helpline are very good and have been responsive in my experience so far. Let’s hope the system doesn’t suffer from some of the failures that have been reported here and elsewhere.

I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt I needed to because of the negative ones I’d seen.

Firstly, don’t listen to the negatives, they’re clearly from rival brands or people who didn’t quite understand the installation.

Replacing the old thermostat with the new one was a breeze! It took less than 5 minutes. 4 screws.. The wires were already in the right order, so it was a quick swap from the old back plate to the new one. (Requires a screwdriver)

The installation of the android app and linking up the hub was done in 2-3 minutes. It was straight forward and the instructions were displayed on screen.

Installing the radiator valves was really quick. I was dreading doing this because although I’d class myself as a bit of a geek, I’ve never played with radiators before. But it was as simple as unscrewing an old valve and replacing it with a new one..

I’ve seen a few people moaning about the app, saying it was impossible to use.. well I’m confused because it’s just as good as any other smart app. It’s just like smart life with extra heating options.

All in all it’s brilliant and if anyone gets stuck installing it, give us a shout.. Everything you need is in the box aside from a screwdriver, but who doesn’t own a screwdriver?

Make sure you turn off the power to the boiler before doing anything!

    Flexible Control
After my previous heating controller started giving problems time came to replace it. How things have changed since my last upgrade from mechanical controllers to a digital controller to now where I can operate my heating from my smart phone and Alexa. I chose the Drayton Wiser because it was the best fit with my heating system, 2 heating zones and hot water, all I had to do was remove the old controller change the wiring around a bit and install the heating hub and fit 2 wireless room thermostats one in each zone. I remember I did find it difficult to get the heating hub to connect to the wireless router but that was most likely me rather than the hub but I eventually got it sorted. I am very happy with the system and I have added 8 radiator thermostatic valves to the rooms we spend time in. What I am able to do with this system is to set a threshold of 18 deg centigrade for all the room and radiator thermostats and the heating will start up if the temperature drops below this threshold, you can adjust this up or down as you choose, now the house is at a constant temperature, so much better. The system has open window detection to save heating a room and loosing all the heat out the open window and you can let the system know when you are not at home so it is not heating the home when no ones home wasting oil/gas. From the basic system I had before to now has been a great improvement, there are other systems available from other suppliers but this one was the best fit for my needs and installation was easy if you have the confidence to tackle it yourself, if not professional installation would be advised.

    Nice Produc
After purchasing the Drayton Wiser Heat Hub with 2 room thermostats, I purchased 8 of these radiator thermostatic valves to add more control to my heating system. I have only installed these on the radiators in rooms that we spend time in such as living room, kitchen and bedrooms etc any other room that we pass through like hallways and corridors have the manual thermostats fitted. One tip if you remove one of these thermostatic valves after installation remove the batteries and refit them prior to refitting thermostatic valve back onto radiator, it backs off the plunger inside the thermostatic valve that pushes down on the radiator valve so makes it easy to fit. Otherwise you are trying to depress the rod on the radiator making it difficult to refit the thermostatic valve, I found this out. I find that I can’t get the valve to stay tight on the black locking ring, which is why I removed the thermostatic valve, I might have to superglue the black ring to the thermostatic valve body to stop it from turning when I operate the valve when in situ on the radiator. It does make a little noise when it operates but nothing too loud or distracting.

    Great Addition to Heating System
I had installed a Drayton Wiser heating hub controller into my home with wireless radiator thermostats but one thermostat kept on dropping out of the App due to its location in distance away from the hub. I therefore knew I needed this range extender to solve the problem and it did no more loosing signal from that radiator thermostat. Bonus is this range extender also operates as a smart plug so it can be switched on and off via a button on the top of the unit or via the App either manually or timed settings so when a lamp is plugged into the smart plug it can be programmed to come on/off at set times to act as a burglar deterrent. I will be buying more in the future.

This thermostat makes the entire system so much better, even not being that good
I have Drayton Wiser system for more than a year, and I love it, I can thank it enough for the comfort it added to my life. I have done another review of the entire system.
For the thermostat, I think they are essential for comfort. Each bedroom has one, and I think this is how it should be!
The automated radiator heads from this system are great, but they are not precise with the temperature. Of course, they are 2 cm from the actual heat source. It is impossible to be precise. It is like trying to measure your kitchen temp with a thermometer inside a heated oven.
I placed those 2m from the radiator, and when you add it in the system and select the room, the system knows that from now on it will use this thermostat temp instead of the radiator head. And oh boy, it does make a difference. The temp control is far more stable and smooth. No more getting too cold or too hot. If you set 21C, it will be 21C all the time.
The thermostat itself is not the best piece of hardware; it is sometimes slow; there is no visibility of the temp without clicking on it and has minimum functionality for the price. It is only to change the temperature or give a boost. Nothing more! For the price, it should offer more, in my opinion.
So, I do recommend this piece, as it makes the system as good as it can be and definitively adds a lot of comfort to the room that it is located.

    Mostly straighforward installation.
This would have been a very straightforward installation had not the electrician who installed our original CH controller made such a dog’s dinner of it. I carefully read the installation instructions and determined that it was going to be easy. However… firstly, my original model controller did not have a compatible back plate which I knew before I started. Secondly, what I did not expect was that it had been installed by someone with a penchant for connecting a wire (or two) to every single one of the nine terminals. Some led to a dead end at a junction box next to the boiler in another room, others simply doubled back on themselves and were connected back at the same terminal. The good news was I found a local electrician who came out, scratched his head, took some photos (which are probably on some electricians blog somewhere) and stripped out all the extraneous leads. After that the installation was a doddle.

The controller found my internet first time and set up was really easy. As the room thermostat was some distance from the heat hub with several thick brick walls between, I knew I would need a Smart Plug to facilitate a decent signal path. Finding the best location for the plug was ‘interesting’ due to the nature of the building layout, but here Drayton Wiser support proved to be excellent. As I tried various locations for the plug they were able to see the strength of the connection being made and their advice, patiently delivered, was invaluable. A few weeks later when I had a query, a call to their support was answered promptly and professionally.

The Wiser system has now been running flawlessly for several months and the control from the hub, thermostat or app has been very straightforward. Setting schedules is easy, and the variable boost function has proved far more useful than I imagined.

Downsides? As I spend hours each day at my computer it would be good if there was a web-based app to control the system rather than my iPad or phone and given that customer support could see the signal strength between the heat hub and thermostat it would be useful if this facility could be extended to users. Maybe a future enhancement.?

In summary, I’m really pleased with the unit. The thermostat is small and neat (and mobile), the app such a doddle to use that my technophobic wife (who never managed our previous ‘old-school’ controller) is very confident to use and the customer support has been exemplary.

A Great Product that i'd recommend.
I have this system installed in my house along with multiple (3, soon increasing to 5) radiator thermostats & two smart plugs.
It was fairly straight forward to install.
Some electrical knowledge & an idea of how to configure the wifi will help, but isn’t essential as the instructions provided are clear & concise.
It’s provide great control & insight over the heating system whilst reducing energy costs.
The technical support available from the manufacturer is also first rate. Their quick to answer the phone & reply to e-mails.
Please be aware the radiator thermostats do require periodic battery replacement as they are wireless etc.
    I’d thoroughly recommend.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSimple to setup, easy to use, easily expandable & UK made!
I have the 2-channel system, running my hot water (tank type, not on demand) and single zone heating, although with the radiator thermostats you can make it
Multi-zone without reinstalling your entire heating system! Trigger to install was my existing, rather old, timer and wireless thermostat packing up and having shopped around for a while.

While not as comprehensive a system as others, it is extremely simple to setup, particularly if you already have a Drayton timer unit – it’s just a matter of swapping the existing timer for the hub (took me literally 2 minutes with a screwdriver) and then setting up the app and thermostat (a further 5 minutes following the relatively idiot proof guide) – I am far from an electrician – making it significantly cheaper to get up as you remove the 120+ installation. The most complicated bit was working out how the thermostat stand clipped into the unit. Added bonus of a system made in the UK. You can then scale the system with the smart TRVs which I intend to do over time to spread the cost and/or chase special offers. I’ve not had any issues with the app or connectivity that some people report, I understand the app has recently been significantly improved and my house (fairly standard sized 1900s 3-bed semi) isn’t really big enough to have problems that you might get with a larger house. I’ve not had it for long enough to measure cost savings but given that my old system was going haywire before I replaced it I probably won’t be able to measure it – key thing is being able to control the heating far better.

Negatives – doesn’t integrate with wider ecosystems (apple home / nest / hive etc) so that has to be traded off against the simplicity. Alexia does work but I mostly just use the app. App can take 30 seconds to load sometimes but that’s not really been a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Got This Soone
I took the plunge in to smart heating and considered the pros and cons of a few systems but this ticked all the boxes at a price that was affordable and I’m glad that I opted for the Drayton kit over the others. It was a breeze to install and configure through the app (I had an existing Drayton controller that I simply lifted off from the bracket and slotted the Wiser hub in its place). Although I have a small flat, for the first few weeks it couldn’t keep a consistent connection to my router which was situated only a few metres away behind a wall but I now believe it was an issue with the router as it became clear that my other smart devices were dropping off randomly – router was replaced and have enjoyed months without a single drop-out.

I love that it offers a comfort mode meaning that you set a room schedule and it learns how far in advance to begin heating to reach the desired temperature before the scheduled on time – I just set a schedule and forget about it – and I love that the bathroom is always cozy ready for my morning shower without having to remember to turn up the thermostat at night. Also a bonus that it has an eco mode so it learns when to stop heating before the scheduled off time.

The valves themselves were simplicity itself to install and didn’t need the adapter for my radiators – simply unscrewed the existing TRV’s, screwed the Wiser ones in place and the app found each straight away, and they make very little noise. The app itself is great but it’s a faff setting it up for geofencing as you need to install 3rd-party apps to make it work and have Away Mode activated when you leave the house, but once set up I just forget about it. Alexa integration is good but could be better – I can use my voice to check and control the heat in individual rooms but have yet to find a way to have the heating off everywhere without manually turning on Away Mode in the app.

Overall though, I’d highly recommend this system for anyone considering a smart home heating system that can control heating per room and that doesn’t tie you in to a subscription for basic functions (like geofencing).

    Need to know this
This is a good internet thermostat and the support was v good from Drayton. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with my Huawei B535 4g modem. The system works by pairing the hub to an account run on Drayton servers via your WiFi/Internet set up. Your mobile phone must also be connected to the same WiFi network. The system uses the 2.4g WiFi band so you will need to have separate 5g and 2.4g networks – usually a simple modem setting if not on by default. The support engineers explained this and emailed me some info for my Huawei modem on using channels 1, 6 or 11 rather than auto. Sadly this didn’t work so I have lost the ability to use the app to control the system. Not too critical for us as this is installed in a Static Caravan and not in constant use. We can however still use the desk thermostat which comes with the system.

    Works as it should
A direct replacement for the old controller – simple removal and a replacement of the controller (hub). Followed the connectivity instructions and connected quickly and easily. App downloads & works OK, all features I need are there. I would like an ‘off’ setting for the heating (during the summer) but this is possible by using the ‘Away mode’ option with the hot water switched on. You can also use the ‘manual’ option but each device needs setting, so a bit more hassle. I found that the temperature readings on the TVRs (radiator valves) to be low but after contacting Wiser, did a reset and they are pretty good now. Thought about knocking off a * but as the support was quick and effective so I didn’t.
I have moved one of the TVRs around the house and it connects OK (with out an extender) at my furthest radiator ~8m away and through 3 walls. My walls are lathe and plaster. Will be buying further TVRs.
I have tested out of the house (3G) and it all works as if I am in the house.

The system is great value for money and does work! I can understand why there have been some bad reviews as I found it a bit frustrating to set up. Changing the wiser hub was a matter of two screws, removing old receiver and replacing. I was apprehensive about distance between the wiser hub and my router is 3 floors! but it worked straight away with room thermostat. I would have liked to have been able to physically plug it in to our home network but no RJ45 socket. Once I called support they were very prompt in solving the issue. works great with alexa

    Does what it says.
Over a year on and I am very pleased and impressed with the Drayton Wiser system (UK).

The system was fairly straightforward to install replacing a modern programmable control unit. The valves likewise were easy to fit and program via the app, replacing existing TRV valves. The only fly in the ointment which I stress isn’t due to Wiser, is the need to use a device (tablet/phone) that’s WiFi can be set to 2.4ghz in order to initially connect and sync the valve to your system.

The valve works well using NiMH rechargeable batteries, though the system will suggest the batteries are getting low prematurely (something to do with the lower starting voltage of rechargeable batteries over a standard battery).

The noise of the valve’s motor working was noticeably only at first, but quickly became overlooked by the whole household.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Users5.0 out of 5 stars Used for year and still only see advantages on having it!
I have used this product for almost a year now and like it. It is a lot better than Hive or Nest as it allows individual control of each room and does some real savings on heating. I live in a rented apartment, so I didn’t want to make any too significant changes in the current system. The building has a central boiler but is allows individual control in each apartment.
The wiser Central replaced the old thermostat in the wall, I needed only to add a power cord, as the previous one was battery powered, so I put a power cord and connected it to the wall socket. If this were my apartment, I would probably do something more elegant, but as I mention, I want to take this all out once I leave the apartment. That said, it is clear that I’ve installed myself; it is easy enough if you like DIY and have a basic knowledge of electrical installations.
This kit is a good start, but I bought more devices to expand the system. The radiator heads (Drayton Wiser Smart Heating Radiator Thermostat) do have a thermostat in it, but it is not precise for big rooms (as it is only centimetres from the radiator). What I recommend is have one of their digital thermostats (Drayton Wiser Smart Heating Room Thermostat) on each room as well. The Wiser system automatically assumes its temp instead of the radiator’s once they are mapped in the app to be in the same place. You should put the digital thermostat some meters from the radiator. I put one close to the baby’s crib, so the central controls the temperature in that place. By the way, if you have a newborn baby, this is amazing, as you can guarantee that you have the correct temp all the time in his room. It is peace of mind as the digital thermostat is very precise.
My set up: Radiators heads on 2 beds, 2 baths, living room(5 devices); 3 digital thermostats: 1 in the baby room, 1 in my room, 1 in the living room.
Wiser support is also very responsive via email; they genuinely try to help you, asking for more pictures and prompting you if the problem was solved or need more help.
My heating bill was definitively cheaper, as this winter I’ve only heated the rooms that I was in, all programmed to be on-off in different periods of the day and different temperature needs. Definitively worth the money.

    The customer support is amazing
I was unfamiliar with the product and had a number of questions. I sent a number of emails to the company and received extremely quick and helpful responses. I have no doubt that they will attempt to help with any future issues I have. The system now seems to be working ok although the test will be when the colder weather comes. The only worry I have is that the app always tells me that the Hub has no signal despite it being only 10 metres or so from my Wifi Hub. As the system is operating ok I will hope that there are no future problems with it.

Really pleased with these, no really really pleased!
Bought as an addition to a Wiser kit that I installed with 2 rad stats provided, these made up for the other rooms. I love the whole set up although its important to get the installation tight on the rad taps before calibrating otherwise performance can be poor.
Delighted now I can individually set a room to off whilst others are on a schedule and can boost a room with a simple twist of the rad stat and rely on it going back to its original setting. I also like the fortnightly self operating maintenance feature that keeps the things in good shape.
The system monitors battery life so no fear off unnoticed failure although changing batteries looks a bit fiddly.
Overall a great buy, if rather expensive when bought as a standalone purchase without a kit.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersMost issues can be overcome
ok, so bought the hub, room thermostat and two radiator thermostats from amazon warehouse. described as packaging scuffed but in as new condition. package arrived and it looked like the last package in the mail room, crushed and falling apart. still, once the items were inspected all were there and unmarked. first tip, go online and get the instructions for the wiser heating system you have just bought. yes i got them half price, but previous customer had attempted to install and not reset. my first mistake was not to factory reset hub and all other items. it will save days problem solving and back and forth from support. next tip, this system requires 2.4ghz internet. set up a guest network solely using 2.4ghz it will save endless non pairing issues. my main internet ssd runs 5ghz and 2.4ghz, it will not work with this item as you can’t select only 2.4ghz. so having done both of those before attempting set up all should go far easier than my installation.i messaged the support more than i chatted to my wife during the entire lock down so far. support were excellent, even when started contact before closing hours they still advised me much much later. having used this item, it was a straight swap for my older drayton hub, even the wife now fiddles with her phone checking the stats. plan is to add radiator stats on more rads as expenses allow, which is such a simple thing to do, my 13 year old son even did one. the adapters included were easy to install. this is a good product and my personal experience with alexa gets four stars, my son has some how made a second household account and alexa is questioning me more than my wife. however the app is excellent and my preferred choice over alexa. hope this helps, but rather than send it back or get frustrated contact support no issue is too small.

No waiting in a queue to speak to someone, knowledgeable staff who have worked hard to iron out the issue.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersApp has improved a lot over the last 2 years and seems robust and reliable
eview for the 2 zone + hot water system. Installed in October 2017 and initially the servers were struggling and had intermittent control from outside the property, but not had any server issues that i have noticed in the last 6 months or so. its a new build house so has two zones and not had any connectivity issues with either the wifi or the thermostats to the hub, but the walls aren’t solid stone by any means but signal strength reported in consistant and appears solid and robust. probably 10m straight line from hub to stats, and 10m hub to wifi router.
The Good, schedules and remote control work really well and temperature control is great (at least as reported by app vs the set point) the graphs and visualisation in the app are informative and useful. haven’t changed the batteries in either thermostat since install so 2 years+ at this point – which is a pleasant surprise.
the not so good, heating can be triggered by placing the mobile thermostat somehwere cold – which is a sneaky way of putting the heating on without changing the set points ! but thats a husband and wife discussion point rather than technology related.
the smart start or eco mode (starts boiler early to reach set point by the time the schedule requests) is a bit hit an miss (as reported by the app. doesn’t always reach temp target by schedule time, but once at target temp it controls really well.
improvments recently – record of number of hours call for heat activated, temp vs setpoint
would like to see – call for heat timeline vs temp, download of data from app.

really happy with the system, other family members have hive, and for me this is more flexible. I have purchased a TRV but not yet fitted it so will be interresting to see how well that integrates with the app.

I’ve had this running for about 6 months now. Although in my use-case it is working fine, I am finding the feature set pretty limited (given that what is missing is generally software).

There is no ‘Work from home/holiday’ setting. Actually, in my case, I’d really like to have an option of A or B week. You can force ‘away’ mode to keep the heating on, but then it stays on till you remember to turn it off.
There is no CSV save/restore for settings.
Away mode doesn’t have a ‘away until’ setting. So this means I can’t easily say I’m going to be out for most of the day.
Comfort mode can mean the heating coming on rather too early in the morning (and mine is noisy).
There is no data export for easier analytics (although there is a HomeAssistant plugin, so this has a viable workaround).
Alexa can’t ‘boost’ the temperature or turn on the hot water.
A hot water thermostat would be nice (although a little hard to use).
Proper multi-account design is rather sad to see absent.

I found the set up a little bit confusing, but in light of the ease of which I put the wiser heat controls in, I thouht it was only a matter of patience and thought to get things working properly. When they did, everything works perfectly, and I am VERY pleased with the performance. I think I will be getting a couple more shortly.

I have installed this on my Bish Junior – straight swap of the control unit took me whole 5 min – amazing!!!

The radiators were super fast to change and pairing thermostats was super easy. I have this unit setup with Google home and it works like a treat. Hey Google, what’s the temperature in my loving room 😉 I love it. I can setup each radiator with separate schedules and different room temperature. If for some reason you need to boost heating in one or more rooms you can twist the radiator thermostat and it will power up or simply use app or tell your smart home to boost heating in any rooms.

I think this is way better than Nest or Hive – I had both of them in previous houses but Drayto (shneider) is super easy and you can install it yourself without a fuss.

Highly recommended and massive bill saver as you heat rooms that you want.

Having been very disappointed with Drayton Controls previous product which never worked fully and the controller needed replacing after two years, I decided to try this, their new product, as I like the fact that the thermostat is completely self contained requiring no wiring for either control or recharging, and because their support had been very good. I have been using the product to control my heating and hot water for the last three months and it has worked perfectly in all respects. In terms of effectiveness, the room temperature has been maintained on target (with the MiGenie this was never the case) under all conditions. When making the purchase I still some doubts, but now am very pleased I did so.

Getting the thermostatic valves on is a bit tricky but well worth the effort, read the instructions and its much easier. Its all talking to each other in a standard three bedroom detached house. Software updates just happened in a few hours. Have since added three more intelligent TRV’s. Its a nice system for the price.

Golden Review Award: 101 From Our UsersDrayton Wiser Kit 3 - beautifully simple, works very well
    Short version
Drayton Wiser is one of the cheapest internet-enabled heating control systems available but in many ways, it is the best, regardless of price. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks, but so far it has been brilliant. Only 4 stars, as Drayton say it doesn’t currently support underfloor heating, but more on that below.

    Long version
Why Wiser? At this time it appears to be the only system which can control multiple heating zones and hot water from a single controller. When I say “zones”, I mean truly separate plumbing zones, each with its own independent motorized value. The controller, or “Hub”, can also control many wireless thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), giving individual room control, as well as offering wireless room thermostat control.
By contrast, the Honeywell Evohome seems overly complicated, requiring many components to make a comparable system work. The TRVs are too big, and while it might seem nice to see a temperature reading on the TRV, it isn’t necessary and will just cause the batteries to run down faster.
By contrast, the Wiser thermostats and TRVs are minimalist, but provide all the functionality you need.
The Hive thermostats also appear overly complicated and likely to drain their batteries quickly if you use all that functionality frequently. The Hive system would also require a second Hub to control a second zone. It also requires yet another unit to receive the wireless signal from the Hub and connect to your WiFi modem via a cable. The Wiser Hub connects directly to the WiFi modem wirelessly.
So Wiser was a clear winner for my needs. What tips would I give to anyone thinking of buying Wiser?

    Hardware Installation
This was simple in my case, as I already had a Drayton LP722 controller for the hot water and central heating. I had a separate Danfoss TP5 controlling an underfloor heating zone. Wiser Kit 3 is required for two zones plus hot water. The Wiser Hub uses the same UK industry standard backplate as the LP722, so it was just a matter of removing the LP722 panel (2 screws), moving the two wires for hot water and central heating from terminals 3 and 4 to terminals 2 and 1 respectively, attaching the output wire from the TP5 to terminal 3, and finally attaching the Wiser Hub to the existing backplate using the same two screws. Drayton could have made this even simpler by using terminal 4 for a heating channel, terminal 3 for the hot water, and terminal 1 or 2 for the second heating channel. The screws are on the underside of the Hub, so you need some clearance below to get a screwdriver in. If there isn’t much clearance I recommend a mini-ratchet, like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002VJ7K88/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item

After installing this I discovered a statement on the Drayton FAQ page that Wiser does not currently support hydronic underfloor heating. This was disappointing, as it wasn’t mentioned anywhere on their product selector or other pages at the time. The reason is that the software in the Hub uses a “load compensating” algorithm, designed for radiators. In other words, it will start to switch the demand for heat on and off as it gets close to the required temperature, whereas underfloor works best with a simple on/off algorithm. That said, I’ve left the Wiser controlling the UFH zone, and it seems to be working fine so far. Their support team also informed me that they will be adding official UFH support in a software update later this year.
I didn’t install any smart TRVs at this stage, but I have done this subsequently and they work well. It was easy to replace the old Danfoss TRVs as the Wiser ones come with a Danfoss adapter collar. One small hex key was the only tool required to remove the old TRVs and attach the new ones.
The Hub is in a cupboard and the WiFi modem is in a different room, so the signal has to go through three wooden doors and round some corners in a Victorian house with thick walls. I haven’t had any problems with WiFi connectivity to the Hub. One of the smart TRVs is 3 rooms away and just out of range. This was easily fixed by using a single Wiser range extender plug at half distance between the Hub and far radiator. The Hub communicates with TRVs, room thermostats, and plugs using the Zigbee wireless standard. This is completely separate from the WiFi but does use a similar carrier frequency. Its range seems to be similar to the WiFi in my house.
If you have a large room with multiple radiators it will work best if you also place a room thermostat in this room, as it will give a more accurate temperature reading than the TRVs. In this case the Hub will use the room thermostat reading to control the TRVs. You should also use a room thermostat if you have radiators with TRVs inside a radiator cover.
The price can start to mount up as you add more TRVs, room thermostats, and plugs; however you can do this gradually, and it is still much cheaper than trying to achieve the same functionality with other systems.

    Software Installation
I read a lot of negative reviews about the software app set-up process, as well as many positive ones, so I was a bit worried about this stage. I shouldn’t have been. The process was very slick and the whole thing was up and running in 5 minutes. Having read some of the other comments I did a couple of things to prepare for the installation that might have helped make it a smooth process:

    1. Make sure your phone is connected to the 2.4GHz carrier on your WiFi modem. Most modern phones will try and connect to the 5GHz carrier if they can, as it can potentially have a higher data rate; however most Internet of Things devices that don’t need high data rates (e.g. heating Hubs) will use the 2.4GHz carrier, as it has a better range than 5GHz. The Wiser Hub uses 2.4GHz WiFi to communicate with your WiFi modem. During the set-up, your phone will need to be connected to exactly the same WiFi channel as the Hub. You can check if your phone is connected to 2.4GHz by looking in the WiFi settings. If it’s 5GHz you might be able to get it to switch by moving the phone further away from the modem. The best way is to log in to your modem settings page and change the WiFi name (SSID) for the 2.4Ghz channel to something different to the 5GHz carrier. You can then “forget” the 5GHz WiFi in your phone WiFi settings and connect to the 2.4GHz WiFi. This should also give you the advantage of a more reliable WiFi connection around your house, as some phones don’t seem to be very good at auto-switching from 5GHz to 2.4GHz when they start to lose signal.
    2. In your WiFi modem settings, make sure the modem is not blocking any ports.
    3. Have another device such as a laptop close by with your email open. You will be sent an account registration confirmation email during the set-up process. You need to click something in this email but apparently this might not work if you try to do it on your phone during the set-up.
Apart from that I just followed the instructions on the app. Within a few minutes I had all the rooms and hot water configured with daily schedules. It has worked flawlessly since then.

    Operation
The app seems intuitive to me. It is easy to set up schedules for different rooms and copy them from day to day. The heat report feature is nice to see graphs of temperature over time for each room. The graphs also show the schedule target temperature. It would be useful if the graph could display when the Hub is calling for heat as this isn’t as simple as when the actual temperature is below the target temperature. They could use a small icon on the header bar for the heat report rather than taking up a lot of screen space with the button for this, outside temperature, and reminder of where you are, in case you forgot.
I haven’t used the eco or comfort modes, which try to predict when to turn the heating off and on to reach your target temperature by the scheduled times. I have a good idea about this myself already and just set the schedule to come on early enough.
I use the app for all control and checking the room temperatures. It works well wherever I am in the world, on WiFi or mobile data. I find I never need to touch the room thermostats or TRVs. I suppose those controls might be handy if the internet is ever down, but it is also possible to connect your phone directly to the Hub WiFi by pressing the Hub setup button.
In summary, it looks like Drayton has really thought about the design of this system. It is very powerful, but very simple to install and use.

The great selling point is the ability to control the temperature in each individual room via an app and the smart thermostatic radiator valves (trvs). Before you buy check the existing valves you plan to replace. If they are the rarer M28 screw fitting be prepared to have to buy expensive adapters from a supplier outside the UK. Providing everything is compatible expect an easy to configure and adjust system.
